The strop feels very high quality, and works exceptionally well for honing a knife with the compound provided, however there unfortunately was no instructions on or inside the box, while I was able to figure out how they worked after a quick search on YouTube, as a new wood carver myself, I would have quite liked a bit of guidance. Overall highly recommend though!
The strop is constructed of a thick wooden paddle (I stress the point – thick) Smooth leather glued to both sides of the paddle and very securely glued at that…. Polishing compound is supplied as a small stick/block…. Not sure what grit this equates to but seems to work.
Look at YouTube for stropping tutorials… These paddle strops are such good value, I bought a second to keep for ‘dry’ stropping without compound… Happy shopping
he ash base is substantial and makes it easy to use and the stropping compound produces great results after only a short practice session .
Would have liked the option of being able to buy a coarser compound as well, it is after all a two sided strop
So im new to the world of whittling but this is quite easy to use and if I can get a knife to shave hairs on my arm, you can!
The handle makes this so much better to use than the last strop I bought. I really like it, its the only tool I use to sharpen my wood carving knives. You could easily make one and save some cash!
Top quality strop paddle, nice wood and leather very fair price. Solid with a large comfortable handle. The compound is a medium grit and is soft and greasy so easy to apply. You will need another compound for the other side, you could either go for a realy fine or a coarse one to compliment the medium one supplied. It’s made by a company who supply wood carving tools but is ideal for knives of all tvpes. Whether you are a knife collector or just want it to keep your kitchen knives topped up you won’t find a better strop especially at the price. Very highly recommended.
I could stone and strop my knife so it would shave and cut A4 no problem with a cheaper beavercraft strop that you stick to a plank. However with this strop I am able to cleanly slice receipt paper. This is not that expensive but it works very well indeed.
The title seems to be a back handed compliment but it’s far from it considering the price point etc I expected a decent stropping block for the money good to get used to before buying a higher priced & quality unit. But I’m blown away by the construction & quality of this product not only is it well made with a nice thickness of leather securely attached but it’s also perfectly flat along its surface. I won’t be bothering with a more expensive strop if and when this one wears out I’m hoping this company is still making them because I will be a repeat custome
I was gifted this by BeaverCraft. I was struggling to sharpen my sloyd knife as I only had a small strop and this is ideal for it. Substantial size with leather on both sides. Comes with stropping crayon.
A great strop with an ideal height from the work surface, it comes pre loaded with compound. Used on a variety of knife and chisel makes and shapes. It worked well on all. It appears well made and I’m hoping it will last a while.
Sometimes it’s quite hard to review what is essentially a bit of leather glued to a plank of wood. This however feels solid and is good to hold in the hand. Aesthetically the ash base looks the biz and the beavercraft logo is just the right size of tastefull. From a size prospective it’s probably slightly slimmer than some strops you may come across but it makes up for that by its length. This also means it’s a bit easier to store away in some convenient corner
The leather is high quality yet quite thin. But again that’s exactly what you want from a good strop.
The compound that comes with it verges on the hard side and is a tad crumbally when applying. This hardly matters when it comes to the actual sharpening as it works like any other compound. I’ve used this to hone the edge of almost every blade I own. Whittling knives, hand gouges, my Leatherman, pocket knives and Kitchen all feel comfortable as you work them across the surface and all end up as sharp as a Hattori Hanz blade. “If on your journey, you should encounter god, god will be cut”
