Bought because I need sold secure gold for insurance reasons and it is light, very light, and cheap. Ideal really. Am very pleased. However, like with another BW lock I had the key barrel is sometimes stiff… not sure it will last but it is very cheap compared to Abus etc

A big, hefty D-lock that feels up to the job. I can’t fault it’s sturdiness but a little too heavy to carry around whilst cycling so I will keep it for locking my bike up in the shed and look for a lighter, travel-friendly alternative.

I recently purchased the BURG-WACHTER 272S Sold Secure Gold Approved D Lock and I am very impressed with its quality and performance. The lock is very heavy and feels extremely durable, which gives me peace of mind when locking up my bike. The Sold Secure Gold approval means that it has been tested and certified to be strong and resistant to theft, which is important when it comes to bike locks. The lock mechanism is smooth and easy to use, and it comes with two keys for added convenience. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend this lock to anyone looking for a reliable and secure way to protect their bike from theft.

Perfect to keep my mind at ease when the teenagers are out and about.
It is heavy and this does come with the down fall of damaging the bikes paint work and carrying it! It is super heavy and bulky.

A fantastic lock. Feels very secure, and a great deterrent to potential thieves. Not too bulky/heavy to travel with, but feels strong and resistant to breaking.

The 2 negatives – The worst part about the lock is the provided frame mount. It does not feel like it will support the weight of the lock very long, it is extremely flimsy and I don’t know why Burg-Wchter bothered to imprint their name on it. The fixing can be removed from the lock but that of course leaves you with a small section of metal not covered by the sheath (which cannot be slid along to compensate).

Secondly – the locking section does ‘rattle’ a little, so if this is secured to your bike expect a little noise, which may bother some people.

Overall this is a great lock and I would highly recommend; my bike isn’t too expensive so I am happy with the level of protection provided. That said I’d advise you instantly bin the provided mount and find a new way to attach this to your bike.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI used this product for my bike and it works really well, knowing it has gold rated security ensures I have a piece of mind that my bike is gonna be secure and it is easy and light to carry around in my backpack and get it out when I need it! The only thing I didn’t like is the included the lock rack which you could attach the lock to instead of carrying it around! I feel as if the bracket for the lock isn’t gonna hold the lock probably as it can come off pretty easily which does concern me, for next time I would prefer to have a better lock mount bracket but apart from the product it is an amazing product, good value for money and for overall security! Im pleased with the product 🙂

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAccording to the information supplied with the lock, it meets Gold standard on the Sold Secure test. So therefore it meets the needs of my bike insurance whilst I’m out and about. However, because of its relatively cheap price, I’m only using it to shackle the front wheel to my bike frame. I then use a second higher rated lock (Oxford pro Shackle 14) which is “diamond” rated to secure the bike to a metal post etc.
It’s easy enough to use and not too expensive or heavy to carry. I’d say it’s good enough for cheap bikes but don’t use this to secure expensive bikes. Due to adverse reviews about it seizing up in rain, I’ve sprayed with WD40 and will make sure to regularly service it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap “gold” standard lock

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs I ride a relatively attractive but low value bike, I’m happy to go with a more ‘budget’ lock to give me a little bit of peace of mind in the event I’m leaving it somewhere. I would like to say I’m also not commuting and don’t live in a big city.

This lock is substantial, and appears very well made. I went with the medium U size as it fits nicely within the frame of a road bike.

The most important thing I wanted to mention is the fact the lock is quite ‘sticky’ when new, and the vast majority of the negative and 1 star reviews here all list the fact the lock seizes and can’t be opened.

As it’s a disc lock, and a key retainer when unlocked, It does feel a bit scratchy, but appears to be completely dry from the factory. I sprayed white grease heavily into the keyhole, and also into the holes where the locking parts engage with the shackle, before working it back and forth repeatedly, using BOTH keys.

Now the lock operates like butter, and I’ve got complete confidence in the long term durability of the lock.

In short, when you receive this lock, grease it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lubricate this lock before using it!

I can’t believe what good value this lock is. It seems really well made and unlike some other reviewers, I found it easy to fit and remove once I realised that you turn it clockwise to unlock and anticlockwise to lock. The key stays in the lock when it is in its separate parts and is needed to lock the mechanism before it can be removed. It’s a heavy lock and I found the mounting clamp didn’t keep the lock out of the way. Because it is the smaller version, I just store it in my bag on the rear rack. That also keeps it clean. Being a gold rated lock, it certainly looks and feels as though it would deter all but the most determined thief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid lock. Easy to fit.

Very heavy sturdy lock. It is very heavy and it is very finicky and stressful to lock and unlock, there is a sweet spot and it’s not easy to lock or unlock quickly sometimes I want to punch it.

Got this as a quick, cheap replacement for an Abus lock that the locking mechanism had seized. The main u section is pretty beefy. The lock section feels lower quality and the locking mechanism does not inspire much confidence as does the mount. In fairness it is sold secure gold (and it’s only protecting a cheap bike).

Very thick compared to other traditional u locks. Lock works well, nothing bad to say. I would get this lock over the expensive alternatives like kryptonite locks. This is actually worth the money. If you want an angle grinder resistant lock, I suggest hiplock, lite lock or similar. Average u locks will get cut in a minute so no point in over spending.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat D lock for the price the only gripes I have with it is the mounting bracket isn’t that good and that the key is a bit finicky.
However it is a disk detainer lock so you sometimes need to rotate some of the disks for the key to go all the way in. These disks can get stuck due to dirt which is probably why it’s got a slide to protect it. This is actually good because they are hard to pick and need a specialised tool to do so. Its unpickable to a thief and this is proberly the reason they use angle griders.

This is a very well built lock. Heavy and sturdy. My only problem with it is it feels a little tight when putting the two pieces together means you need to get the angle just right. Otherwise it is very good.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI saw there was a lot of negative reviews about the lock mechanism failing and along those lines however keep it well oiled and it will last and keep working.
Unfortunately when locks are made in factories a lot of them are unfortunately have no grease but onto the mechanism They’re just dry fit I’ve noticed this over the years so it’s always simple completely douse it in WD-40 and regularly do it once a month if it’s going to be outside and the first time you do it use the key to activate the mechanism 10-15 times then you’ll know that each part is coated in lubrica

There is a reason that this lock is Gold Standard, it’s a solid, well made,
piece of engineering. That comes at a price, the weight. This is a lock you take your bike to rather than to take on a ride. Great to secure at the end of the day but for me too much to take on a ride.

This product is used for bike security. The key is fiddly to push into the lock and then to operate the lock. The shackle only comfortably fits one way into the lock body. The solution is to mark the body and shackle so you only fit them together one way round. The manufacturer could do better.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersBought this alongside the Burg-Wachter 121C Double Loop coil cable product. Arrived as expected, solid shackle and D lock bar. The bar is coated in a weather proof rubber shell and the shackle is plastic.

This is a large lock so not the easiest to carry around and won’t fit on my bike frame with the included attachment. Do consider the available space on your bike frame before buying if you intend to mount it. I took this in a sports back pack on a 5 mile bike ride and it was heavy to ride with.

Unlocking and locking the shackle and bar is relatively easy with the keys provided. The key hole comes with a handy cover to shield from rain. Bold, visible branding on shackle.

My only concern was that there is a significant gap in the bar which holds the locking bolts, so when fully locked, there is some movement when pulling the bar. This may imply to would be thieves that this is easy to prise apart, but it is not. The dual internal locking bolts ensures this, though I would prefer a tighter fitting bar when locked.

Overall this is a solid, premium quality D lock and will secure most bike frames. I would advise using this on regular U-shaped bike parking racks or poles, more difficult to use on the circular arch-shaped bike racks (especially when used with a coil loop cable). Otherwise great lock that screams quality and security.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought this to add to my existing 2 locks as a condition of insurance (my bike insurance requires a “sold secure Gold” lock).

Given I already have 2 locks for my other bike, I use this as well as rather than instead of – thieves will no doubt crack even this monster, but extra locks means extra work, and those lazy guys will steal them some other poor soul’s bike instead.

This is a chunky lock, opens and closes easily, and has an attachment in case you want to attach to your bike, (but doubt anyone would use that, as the reason you buy a lock like this is for an expensive bike – which is probably expensive because it is light, so why add about 5 kilos to it. !!! Anyway, it has that.

The lock itself would deter most people I think because it really is chunky, and even with an angle grinder, it would take a while to go through, and the sparks that would create would devalue the thing they are stealing, which is doubtless a deterrent.

I’ve bought a couple of these, and left them at various points I visit regularly. I’ve had them a couple of months, and the locks have weathered well, I added “dry lube” to the lock area, and always close the shutter over the keyhole – not sure that helps, but other reviewers have said they’d seized, whereas mine seem to have stayed nice – or maybe I am just lucky

Anyway – totally recommend this, and am about to buy a 3rd one to leave at another station I occasionally visit.

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersMy Lock turned up today by Burg Watcher, and i was VERY Surprised.
2 days ago i picked up a cryptonite lock for 34 UK Pounds, that came with A Cable.
This new Lock by Burg has a thicker U part (shackle), it is also BIG.
I went for the Large one, it should give more locking options.
There are plenty of reviews where people complain that the key is stiff, or Jammed.
I nearly let those put me off buying this lock, but then read reviews on the Cryptonite locks as well.
To my surprise people were also complaining about stuck key, difficult locking/unlocking.
Between these 2 locks (both brand new) the Burg Watcher is smooother to lock/ unlock.
Not by much but smoother all the Same, i plan to carry my lock in my Rucksack or maybe on my rear Rack.
Weight/ size is no problem for me, i gather these locks are hard to mount on some bikes. (no biggy)
Burg Watcher make other things including safes, that is what made me think HELLO a safe with a dodgy lock is not a safe Anymore.
So there it is my initial review/ first look at this lock.
Its half the price of a Cryptonite i say go buy one.
    THE UPDATE.
having used both locks for a while now, the cryptonite is the more fiddly to undo.
    My tips are .
Make sure the key is fully in the lock, and that oiling the keyway is fine.
Also remember that the moving part of the lock also needs cleaning and oiling.
FURTHER UPDATE the lock is still working just fine, as i said make sure the key is all the way into the lock.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersMeasure the frame triangle on your bike before ordering to ensure it can be mounted/stored within the frame profile.
I have a shiny new bike which I’m sure will sparkle to a potential bike thief because of the lack of wear on the parts and perfect unchipped paintwork and unscratched pedals.
I took out bike ‘theft only’ insurance that stipulates using a Sold Secure Rated lock (bronze minimum.)
This was great value with a gold rating.
I read complaints in reviews about the stiffness of the mechanism and the weak mounting bracket.
It has probably sat on a warehouse shelf for a long time so give it a good squirt of oil when it arrives and it should be fine.
It is a standard reliable design and with the occasional oiling to keep water out of the cylinder it should last as long as my bike does.
The mounting bracket is small and positioned at the block end, it can be unscrewed and moved but I would recommend attaching a Velcro strap to distribute the weight across frame and take the stress off the plastic guide runner.
In conclusion very happy with the price and the gold rating means the product has been tested to destruction against various attacks by an independent non profit security organisation.
I have not found any other locks at this bargain price point that have been officially tested and certified.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersUPDATE: Bought 2 more (4 in total) in size medium for easy carry and quick stops. I’ve left a large lock on the gym bike stand (so I don’t have to carry it) and I double lock whenever I go (see photo). I really like these locks!

Quick Review: Thick, heavy duty and robust. Great deterrent. Confirmed Sold Secure Gold. Bracket is weak. Only 2 keys. Brilliant value. Recommended!

Full Review: Bought 2 large D-Locks (+2 medium). Quickly realised I got a bargain. Both sides of the shackle lock to the barrel which makes it even tougher to penetrate. The shackle is very thick. You’d need an angle grinder to cut it so should resist most attacks.

Just keep in mind, there’s no lock on earth that can’t be broken, cut or penetrated in some way. You can’t blame the lock when some b*****d steals your property.

The included bracket won’t last on regular use with the hefty large D-Lock. Should last longer with the medium lock.

I have a 2.5m long Oxford motorcycle chain and disc lock which wraps around a pillar and all the way around my bike. These D-Locks are for added security (see photo). This combination has already deterred 3 attempts!

Squirt some chain lube into the keyhole to prevent the lock seizing. Haven’t had any issues and highly recommend others do the same. This is part of normal lock maintenance.

These locks are amazing value for money and punches well above its weight. You’d have to spend 3-4x more to get something significantly better.

Hope you found this review and the attached photos helpful. Safe ridings! (^_^)

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI’ve been looking at locks for a while and had decided on getting a lock of this type and wanted to get a Gold Secure rating as well. This one stood out as having some good reviews and was quite low comparatively.

Initial impressions are good – it’s quite a sold and weighty lock and will probably withstand anything but power tools to cut through it. It does only come with two keys therefore be careful to keep the space somewhere safe.

The downside to this is the mounting bracket. This really limits where it can be mounted, and in fact on my bike completely excludes it being fitted anywhere but the front forks, which is not safe. As you can see from my pictures, the tube needs to be just the right size or it will not fit. The bracket also feels like it would break if subjected to too much force.

Overall though a great bargain for the price

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sturdy lock for the price however difficult to mou
