Faithfull FAIHG Honing Guide For Bevel edge chisels

Faithfull FAIHG Honing Guide For Bevel edge chisels and plane irons

Faithfull Honing Guide
The Honing Guide is used in conjunction with either an oil, water or diamond sharpening stone to ensure the perfect cutting angle when restoring a cutting edge to straight edged chisels, bevel edged chisels and plane irons from 3mm to 67mm wide.
Use the inner jaws for chisels, a blade projection of 30mm will give a 30 degree angle and 40mm will result in a 25 degree angle.
Use the outer jaws for plane irons with a projection of 38mm for a 30 degree angle or 50mm for a 25 degree angle.

I have sharpened my chisels and plane blades for decades without assistance. I bought this little guide having read many reviews and so pleased I did.
The modifications mentioned and shown on u-tube I have not found to be necessary for my particular unit .
The results far surpass what I have done myself and regret not buying one years ago when Record sold them.
My sharpness is so good now I even hone afterwards for that final polish.
This is not a precision instrument, but it doesn’t pretend to be nor does it need to be. To be honest I have taken a file to this jig to improve the fit of the chisel housing but I expected to do this before purchase. In use this facilitates really seriously sharp blades, and it’s cheap.
Like others have noted, the thick paint coat prevents the blade sitting straight and is a pain. However, one you understand that, and get used to playing with the setup, it’s easier. I feel, like a lot of these cheap ‘Chinese?’ tools it may be better to spend more money and get what you really want. Cheap is not bes
For the money this costs, its not bad.
It is a bit basic and takes a bit of effort to get a chisel set up in the tool, but once done it is worth the effort and allows one to sharpen chisel blades on a stome okay.
I have found this honing device very stable and holds my planing iron securely. The measuring instructions on the side come up a treat after the paint is filed off. Compared to others which have been described as falling apart, so far this product looks good. I have yet to use it with small chisels so don’t know how it will perform for these.
Well, it is cheap… not the most accurate out of the box, but a bit of fiddling with the file, it came up very good and accurate. Now it’s just as good as the high end ones. Plenty of videos on you…e
Overall good purchase
It’s fine to use on a diamond plate but not for a wetstone as the narrow roller will carve a groove down the middle of your stone after about 10 secs of use. This creates a channel down the middle of your wetstone. If you are going to buy a honing guide I would suggest you look for one with a full width rolle
It can hold a wide selection of tools, from plane irons (fits my Stanley No. 5) down to small-ish chisels. The knurled knob is good enough and it is enough to securely fit your tool.
However, the major issue with this honing guide is the wobble in its bearing. This wobble isn’t that frustating when sharpening plane irons as they are wide enough to be stable, but makes the guide nearly unusable for thin chisels.
I bought this mainly to help with sharpening plane irons to different bevel angles, which it works well enough for given the price. But if you are buying mainly for use with chisels I’d recommend spending a bit more for something better built.
Was very excited about getting this as have several chisel to sharpen, I know it pretty cheap but the edges aren’t square to each other not sure if it over coated in the paint also the chisel was hard to get flat with out it wanting to creep up, after a while I managed to use it, and once it was I a square did a good job
The entire guide is made of metal. It feels sturdy and strong. There are 2 slots – one for the much wider blade such as larger chisel or plane blade and the smaller slot for smaller chisel or bullnoze plane. Gripping the blade onto the guide is easy and no messy fiddling. Ensure that the angle is maintained at 30 degree is guided entirely by the honing device. Once it is gripped in place, it is must a matter of gliding the device either over the sanding stone or sand paper of your choice. Be it dry or wet sanding, this device is applicable under both condition. Well made and a breeze to operate.
Good solid grip on the tools. Easier to use to hone plane blades than chisels as the straight edges that are supposed to hold the tools have a camber to them. Can be helped by light filing on the inside edges. Just makes it more difficult get a perpendicular edge on your blades. This being said, I would buy again, but if I was a pro would probably look at spending slightly more.
This is a high quality product and a very useful set of gadgets it is my first stick that actually worked with my phone and Go pro setting up was a breeze and the fun and ease of access is 10/10 a good strong pressure calm holds your device nice and secure. I was not expecting a drawstring bag for all the extra bits and stick very good quality indeed plus if you need to you are able to attach the stick to a separate tripod (not inclded) and use the remote from the stick that can be detactched for convinces also a reflection miror for camera placement etc very well put together and feels very lush when holiding. There are endless uses for the stick depends on device of course just be certen its paired properly with blutooth. Highly recommend it for Android and iOS not tried it on Win yet but I will be happy with it regardless and I highly recommend the stick so don’t hesitate.
Very useful.
I can sharpen my larger chisels reasonably well without this aid, but it makes the task a great deal easier. The narrow chisels usually defeated me without it, and now I can sharpen those properly too. The grip grooves for chisels are a little vague and rounded instead of sharply cut and that does make it harder to get the chisel in. A more expensive guide would work no better but would probably be better cut, so it would be easier to fit a chisel to it. It’s nothing a metal file can’t fix if it bothers you.
Once you get used to this you will be very glad you bought it.
Got this on a whim as it was not expensive just to see what it was like as I have never used anything like it before.
I have to say my experience so far has being mixed. It is easy to fix blades into the honing guide securely by tightening the silver screw on the side and I found it worked well when sharpening larger blades which utilize the wider grip on top (Jack and smoothing planes) while the narrower inner grips (for bevel edged chisels and smaller blades from spoke shaves etc) are much harder to get to work properly and to keep the blade square. The grips are not manufactured to a high standard and have being given a thick coat of paint which makes matters worse.
I really liked the idea behind this product so grinded away the excessive blue paint from the inner jaws, as suggested by other reviewers, and this help somewhat. Impressed with my modifications I have also since carefully filed away part of the inner jaws so they now grip square edged chisels as well and have ended up with a really handy tool.
I am now getting much better and far more even edges on my blades than I used to.
Despite my earlier mixed results from this product I still have to give it four stars due to its price point and the fact it worked well with larger blades out of the box. Also with only minimal modification I have ended up with a really nice tool.
4 stars because putting small blades in is a lot of a faff & the roller is a bit to narrow. It feels like both of these features became features as a result of trying to keep manufacturing costs down. As ever they’ve done this at the expense of the functionality of the tool. But hey ho, as long as it sorta works, let’s save a few pence & screw the people who are going to use it. That having been said if you can be arsed getting blades to sit correctly & keep it aligned with the stone it does a good job of keeping the blade at the angle you set it to.
However if you plan on sharpening awkward blades that require a abnormal bevel such as low angle shoulder plane irons you might find it slightly difficult but should still be able to do so.
The only downside of this product is that the wheel that the guide runs on is made of plastic (I think its high density nylon) which over time will be less accurate and less hard wearing than some of the second hand faithful or eclipse 36 designs available for similar prices on ebay which use a accurately ground metal wheel.
