Very good Strummer especially the automatic feed it really helps to just strim without the hassell of worrying about the reel breaking every minute.does it dies the job brilliantly
I bought this item for my front lawn, I used it today for the first time, very easy to put together and I have to say the performance of the trimmer was fantastic my grass hadn’t been cut for a while but was no problem for this machine. Cut it with ease and the auto spool is a great bonus, not having to keep pulling out new lengths of cord, I am an above the knee amputee and I managed to operate it without any issues. Highly recommend this trimmer, and for the price I am over the moon, fingers crossed it keeps up the good work.
This Flymo strimmer possesses considerable power and is relatively easy to assemble, although upon its arrival, the surprisingly compact, rectangular box left me briefly uncertain about whether the correct item had been sent. I successfully assembled the compact strimmer, only to find it noticeably heavier than my original one I had previously. However, this increased weight did not pose an issue as the strimmer felt robust and well-built.
My primary concern was the amount of pressure required to maintain the trigger and keep the strimmer operational. The strain on my hand and finger was notable especially after long periods of use.
Overall, this strimmer is robust, straightforward to assemble, and features an automatic feed system, eliminating the need to interrupt your work to manually extend the wires for continuous grass trimming.
Great product. Love the rotating head, easy to use and so on but the wire feeder is not the best. Like the rolling collar round the head for easy use too
I bought this as a replacement for the my old one. Only problem is I can’t pull the trigger up to work it, as I have arthritis in my hand, so my Husband has to do the edging on my lawns. He finds it more powerful than the old one and’s takes a bit of getting used to. Also it is quite a bit heavier.
To be honest it is not as easy to use regarding the trigger I didn’t have a problem with my old one. If I didn’t have arthritis it probably would be fine.
The assembly was simple apart from the Metal m connections between the motor unit and control. This was quite stiff to push in at one end. The unit itself is much quieter than the original Flymo strimmer that it has replaced. The cable storage assembly is good and easy to used and rotating the head release and lock is very quick and simple. The metal plant protection guard I found to be next to useless and I have removed it. The strimmer comes with a good length of cable and as I said it is easy to store and has a button release to ready it for use.
I should have read the reviews before purchasing the strimmer, I assumed that the it would have been very similar to handle as my old 500e Flymo strimmer, but that is not the case.
The trigger switch and the safety button on the top of the handle can only be held on for no more than a couple of minutes. After that my hand became too tired to continue holding the switches.(I am a 12stone fairly strong man), other than that the strimmer does a first class job of trimming and edging the Lawns. So can Flymo improve on the trigger switches in the future? otherwise I shall be taking my custom elsewhere!!
Not easy for me to put together, though it is apparently just a click assembly. It works really well though and is great to use. A bit heavy but that’s a workout for your arms!
Bought my second one of these after the wife managed to somehow smash the last one, I had bought a bosch one first but that was awful quality so I returned it and got another contour as the previous one lasted a few years before the wife destroyed it.
The contour has a good feel and does not get uncomfortable during long use, the only downside is the auto spool which often sticks the wire together and requires manual adjustment.
Great product once we had put it together by pictures !!!.
It takes a time getting used to. It was easy to build, but it took some time to get used to strimming and even more to get used to the edging.
Did everything it said on the box, very pleased with i
bought this to replace old one. So far so good
Product itself appears ok but I received a strimmer that someone has returned.
The packaging was previously opened and the strimmer had been semi assembled and re-boxed.
Quality of strimmer is fantastic as expected from Flymo it was a little fiddly to put together but does literally click together and once done very sturdy strong material I do think it’s a little bit heavy but that will reflect in the power I hope. I will update on the power. Over all highly recommended superb quality for the price
The strimmer arrived in a very small box, so was obviously going to need putting together. Following instructions you really can’t go wrong. I used this to take lawn length down as building works meant it had grown to nearly a foot. It is powerfull. Much more so than I expected. It tackled a small lawn and edges with ease. Flipping the motor on its side allows you to edge the lawn. Only issue was I wasn’t sure where it would actually strim. It actually cut a new edge where I went off line. It did all this without any break in the double line. Having read other comments I was fully expecting it to break, but no. Great bit if kit easily suited to small and medium size gardens and I would say even larger if you have stamina – it’s not the lightest of machines. Probably overpowered for my needs but big is better?
For the price this strimmer is great, quite short which might be a problem for tall people. The cable is a good length and powerful enough. The head is on a ball so it’s really easy to go from horizontal swimming to vertical edging. Have used it about 6 times now, there are two cutting cables, one always seems to get either a lot longer than the other so have to wind it back in after a while which can be a bit annoying, but over all I’m pleased with my purchase
It is very nice machine and works well.My only problem is that as an elderly lady I find it heavy .No fault if the machine just anno Dominic!!
Despite having problems putting the item together, thanks you tube for your excellent videos, I find the strimmer amazing for the money. Light and easy to use. Would certainly recommend i
Loved the price and well known product but rather heavy to use!
Works well, good value for money. A bit awkward to stand up or store easily when not in use due to its shape and could do with cable hooks on it to wrap the cable around for easy storage but otherwise. . Not bad at all.
It’s a fairly heavy tool but has a powerful motor, twin lines and is almost silent when running. The wheel was very stiff so I had to put some grease on it which made it run much smoother. I brought this mainly for the grass edge trimming function (the wheel) but didn’t appreciate that it’s really meant for grass/flower boarder edging where there’s a overhang. My lawn is flush with paving so the line kept breaking and then you have to stop an re thread it all – faff! Now I trim the line shorter before I start and that seems to help a lot. It takes a bit of getting used to to gauge where it’s going to cut but I think that will come with practice.
I have “upgraded” from the Contour 500XT which was brilliant to the Contour 500E which is okay.
The 500E strims fine and is easy to use.
What I don’t like is the cable storage facility which only allows the cable to be wrapped around by the handle. The foot pedal can be used but the cable slides off easily. I have to carry the strimmer some way to my grass and it’s a nuisance when the cable unravels! It never did with the 500XT.
The two button release is too flimsy. Again I preferred the one button where you just squeeze the handle. As soon as the handle is released you lose the momentum trying to find the button. I know this is a safety feature but not well designed in my opinion.
I have always used Flymo products and this is the first time I have felt any disappointment.
Spoke with Flymo who confirmed there is a fault and have authorisation to return i
As people who know me will tell you, I am a very hard person to please. I also very rarely write positive reviews about things I buy, but this strimmer is genuinely so good that I felt compelled to write one.
But firstly, just to get them out the way, there are two slight negatives:
1) The dead man switch is a little too firm to keep pressed down, and it does end up aching your hand every few minutes. People with less strength could struggle.
2) The spool does occasionally need to be manually pulled through.
However, these are the only negatives I can find. The strimmer absolutely burned through our incredibly overgrown garden (the grass was almost a meter tall in places with weeds everywhere, tree stumps to navigate, big stones and bricks hiding underneath, and stone/fence edges too) and the machine didn’t use anywhere near as much nylon as I expected it to, and it easily stood up to every test.
Whilst the machine is slightly heavy – and you do have to switch arms every 5-10 minutes – the results are certainly worth the pain!
Genuinely didn’t expect the experience to be pleasurable, but it really was!
Top marks, highly recommended!
I have for several years been using a battery powered Bosch strimmer but wanted a more powerful mains powered strimmer with no worry of battery going flat halfway through the job. I have owned a lightweight flymo strimmer before which was mains powered but it used to struggle on heavy weeds and grass. The 500e strimmer purchased went together fairly easily. I watched the flymo’s video on flymo web site which also helped.
I had a little problem fitting the main shaft into the upper handle and lower motor housing, it seemed very tight but eventually went together.
The day after putting it together I put it to the test on a long stretch of grass and weeds which I have at the front of my house about 25 metres in all. The flymo did a great job. I did however have to stop several times as I found the flymo on off trigger difficult to keep a grip on for prolonged periods. Also this strimmer is heavy, much heavier than I thought it would be. Overall I am happy with it but think for some it would prove too heavy if using for long periods. In my opinion if flymo had made the handle easier to grip and made the on off switch a one finger trigger type switch I would have given it five stars. Overall a very good piece of garden equipment which hopefully will last for years.
My 18 year-old Flymo grass trimmer recently gave up the ghost. The plastic joint on the shaft had snapped and whilst the motor was running as well as ever, it was rendered unusable. I did my usual research and decided upon this particular 300W version as a like-for-like replacement.
The main selling point for me was its lawn edging ability and in particular, the design of the edging wheel. Many trimmers seem to have only one or two small rollers which I though may not last the test of time whereas this one has a large central wheel – much sturdier and more practical looking. It’s performance on paper is slightly higher than my old one with 50 extra watts of power and a 2cm larger cutting diameter. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference but in practice, is very noticeable.
If I had reviewed this strimmer immediately after using it for the first time, I’d have said it was horrible and wouldn’t have recommended it. It was a bit of a faff to build (mainly because I found the instructions to be poor due to the lack of text) and I ended up just looking at the photo of the trimmer on the box to see what it should look like once assembled. It’s a wee bit heavier than my old trimmer – probably because its bigger but is still pretty light. However, the shaft flexes at the plastic joint and this means that it wobbles about a bit when you’re using the trimmer to cut tall grass. I’m not entirely convinced of its longevity but we’ll see.
The main issue I had when I first used it was that when used as an edger, you have to strim from right to left. With my old one, I did the edges from left to right so found it quite difficult to control and had to work out an entirely new route around the garden instead of the one I’d followed for 18 years. This meant that some plant leaves met with an untimely end and the lawn edges looked ‘less than linear’ (a mess!) in some places. With my old trimmer, you only had to flip the entire thing over to swap between edging and long grass trimming but with this, you have to push a button and flip only the trimmer head over; a case of slightly pointless ‘progress.’ However, with an open mind, I thought that I’d gradually get used to this new approach and I certainly have. I’m 5ft 10in and find that the overall length of the trimmer is just fine and I don’t have to stoop at all, especially when using it as an edger as most of the weight is over the large wheel.
I mentioned the slight step up in specification compared to my old Flymo trimmer. The extra 50 watts makes this trimmer feel significantly more powerful than my old one to the degree that wearing PPE is a must. Even a stray bit of strimmer line pinging off can feel like you’ve been shot with a BB gun and will leave a 5p-sized red, painful lump on uncovered legs. It’ll easily kick up small stones when you’re trimming around gravel beds and generates enough dust in dry conditions to make me appear as if I’ve served a shift down t’pit. I’m exaggerating about that but a shower is definitely in order after using this! The extra 2cm cutting diameter means that the trimmer will do a better job of edging further down the sides of the lawn where grass can grow outwards. I’m not finding the rather flimsy-feeling leaf protector to be much use though and just take a bit of extra care around tree trunks and overhanging plants instead.
I’ve had no issues whatsoever with the twine breaking during use. I’ve always found that the trick with auto-feed systems is to stop completely every 45 seconds or so and allow the trimmer to spool out more line, thereby preventing it from getting shorter and shorter then eventually becoming unclipped from the reel and having to be re-loaded. It’s certainly cut through everything I’ve asked it to – and then some!
I have about 300 linear meters of lawn edge to trim each week during the growing season and (now!) find that this trimmer is well up to the job. It’s a mixture of straight and curved edges against soil beds, patio and gravel, with a couple of tree trunks thrown in too. I’ve included some photos showing the type of edging I do and the results I’ve achieved. This is a good trimmer, especially for lawn edging. It’s more than powerful enough for general domestic use and with a bit of practice, gives excellent results. My only reservation is that plastic joint in the shaft and if that was sturdier and of a better design, the trimmer would be worthy of five stars.
