How to use hair dye at home?
Before you do anything, do a patch test. Apply a small amount of colourant behind your ear and wait 48 hours. Always read the instructions in the box. Watch our How To Video above for a step-by-step tutorial.
How many boxes of dye do I need?
More often than not, people can underestimate how much hair dye they need. If you have long hair below shoulder length or thick hair, always buy 2 boxes to make sure you get perfect coverage all over. You don’t want to be left feeling disappointed.
Which parts of the packaging are recyclable?
You can recycle the outer box, the developer bottle, conditioner bottle and the instruction leaflet.
How to pick the right shade.
The 1st number of the shade relates to the base colour. The higher the number the lighter the shade. The 2nd number relates to the reflect, the higher the number, the warmer the shade will be.

My hair was already orange but my roots were dark and grey. Popped this on last night for 25 minutes and today they are brilliant! Probably should have left it a little longer but I was worried it was looking a bit brown.. but nope pretty perfec
Bought this as it said less breakage and the oil and boy was I surprised and happy! I’m older, have fine hair with a little gray hair, and growing out my layers which are dry. A lot of color products I’ve tried either don’t cover the gray or are too heavy or harsh but not this one. The color came out as shown on the box and left my hair very manageable. The conditioner isn’t heavy, just the right amount and leaves my hair bouncy. The difference it has made is amazing.
Bought this as read others didn’t have an allergic reaction. A few years ago had a serve allergy to hair dye blisters all over scalp, eyes swollen. Tried other hair dyes with no phd or ammonia and had slight reaction to them. After letting my grey come through but looked like a skunt lol with my grey on top and black hair at bottom I decided to take a cherub this hair dye. Done patch test all ok. Put this dye on and omg I’m so happy NO REACTION at all covered my grey but I only bought a light brown so it’s has tinted my grey but no I know this hair dye is good I’ll buy a darker brown to cover greys properly.
Loved this colour however on receiving my order the bottle applicator was burst, can’t say it’s a manufacturer fault probably more on route..trying to package to return it’s providing impossible due to the yucky fluids
I love this product when my hairdresser couldn’t fit me in for 8 weeks I wasn’t worried as this product was perfect for my needs easy to apply although as I have a lot grey at the sides I leave it 10 min longer but if I am being honest it coveted the grey even better than at the hair dresse
Really pleased with 5.0 Brown. At last, a rich dark brown that isn’t so dark it make me look like a witch!! Ignore the boring sounding name. This is a multifaceted colour that covered my few greys well and went on really easily being a nice thick consistency. This will be my go-to from now on!
Although it was not the colour I expected it to turn out the dye itself can’t be faulted going by the photos of what colour to expect based on my start colour I should have been an almost auburn but instead it did it’s job way too well and my hair went bright orange
love the olia range though my hair never gets that just dyed feel of other brands and always feels healthy afte
I have brunette hair, so I already knew this wasn’t going to come out bright pink. I stripped my hair first as I’d previously dyed my hair a different tone of brown and I wanted this dye to take to my hair as much as it could. It turned out a gingery rose gold colour which I really like (my comparison photo doesn’t do it justice). I’ve dyed my hair similar colours before and my sister recommended this one to me. I was surprised that it actually lightened my hair colour too. For anyone wondering, yes it does cover grey hairs.
It was really easy to use and the instructions are simple to follow. You’re left with a lot of after colour care (tube number 3) which I use instead of conditioner when I wash my hair. It’s been a few weeks and I still have plenty left (I wash my hair twice a week). The only thing I would say is this dye can stain, so make sure you cover your surfaces, or if you notice that you’ve spilled any on your basin etc, try to clean it up as soon as you can.
I have used this box dye for years. When I was younger I dyed my hair red many of times, I tried lots of different brands/dyes but this Olia dye was my all time favourite. And recently I dyed my hair black and I knew straight away that this was the box dye I wanted to use. and I’m so happy and in love with the final colour.
Use this to lighten my hair before putting a bright semi permenant colour on and it lifts my root colour quickly without any “orange patches”. The brand suits my hair and is now my “goto”. It leaves hair soft with alot less (if any) visable damage unlike other brands i’ve used in the past. If you usually use a harsh bleach to lighten your hair.. give this a try, you’ll notice a huge difference in how your hair feels. Great product.
Bought this as recommended by my hairdresser as an alternative to my usual colour. I seem to have developed an allergy after using the same colour for over 30 yrs. This is amonia free. Very happy and will continue to use this as I have not had any allergic reaction. Love the shade too. Covers grey.
Always liked this brand for coverage but the bottles were really hard to use. Now they have softer easy to squeeze applications so loads better. Coverage for my grey is great and conditioner is wonderful. My only issue is the colour does not last as long as other brands.
The guide colours on the box are way off! The hair dye is bright fuscia when it develops, I thought it would wash out and look paler but it didn’t! I didn’t take a before picture but it was light brown hair with blonde highlights. I’m now half ginger half fuscia- somehow the blonde bits are darker than my routes now. It’s also left my hair feeling really heavy and greasy, I’ve scrubbed it with shampoo about 4 times but it looks like I haven’t washed it on a week, I’m absolutely devastated! I would rather be bald! EDIT- Several washes later I actually LOVE the result, it’s faded into the prettiest shade of pink and no longer feels like there’s build up- I actually would use it again! Editing from 1 star to 4 because it was a rollercoaster!
Great coverage easy to use not to harsh on hair and coulors lovley
I ordered this as I wanted a light brown dye and my usual brand only makes urban brown or dark brown. This turned out to be medium brown, would not say it’s light brown. However, this is one of the best dyes I’ve used. Really nice to use, great coverage, really even colour. And smells fantastic and left my hair super shiny. I will probably stick with this brand now as even though the colour wasn’t what I was looking for the quality is far better than my previous dye for pretty much the same price.
Really nice colour and has left my hair feeling really soft, no damage and it has covered all of my gray’s. I also found it to be really easy and not messy, which is a first for me. I like amonia free hair dyes as I have a really sensitive scalp and find I don’t react to these. I usually go for the L’Oral Casting Creme Gloss as the colours are really vibrant with lovely tones, and cover gray hair really well. But they don’t last very long, as they are only semi permanent. I had tried Olia many years ago when it first came out and I wasn’t convinced, but I bit the bullet to try again, and I’m really pleased. Hopefully I get longer with this colour than the L’Oral, and if I do, I will be making a permanent swap Olia.
No bleachy eye can’t breathe got my head out the window with this one! So don’t know how it works or why the others need the eye burning stuff, but it does. Nice colour too. Great!
I bought this product to use as a toner/colour after bleaching my hair. I left 3 weeks between bleaching and colouring.
This product is great but you need to be very close to the colour originally hence why I use us it after bleaching
You cannot use this to bleach or lighten your hair or if you have dark hair.
It did a great job of covering up my red hair (dyed red) and took very quickly. It’s a lovely shade, my only issue was that it was very runny and made quite a mess.
Been looking for a natural almost black shade for my (East) Asian hair which is going salt n pepper. First time using an oil based dye, and it was very easy with no pungent chemical smell or stinging – which happened when I used Garnier Nutrisse (wrong shade for me). The conditioner is gorgeous, leaving my hair soft and silky, I would actually buy this seperately if they sold it!
I followed the instructions, applying it in layered sections with a brush and gloved hands. Left it on for 30 mins after finishing application, but unfortunately it didn’t cover all my greys. I think I may have to leave it on for longer as I suspect my hair is very dye resistant. (I’ve read somewhere this can be the case with thick Asian hair).
After about two washes to get the dye out of my scalp, the finished shade is lovely in daylight, looks very natural. But, in artificial light theres a very obvious orange undertone which is quite brassy and bright. Although my natural hair does have an orange undertone, it’s towards the neutral subtle side. So just be aware the shade might look different in different light conditions.
I’ll definitely purchase again and see if I can cover those greys properly next time!
Love olia hair dye. Smells nice and tends to last long. Only issue I’ve found is this colour has come out really dark on my hair. My hair was a really light brown/red and its come out a dark browny purpley reddish colour which only shows in the light. Happy that it’s left my hair soft etc but not too sure about the colour still.
This was the first time I dyed my hair and I made the brave decision to do it myself (as I was bored during Lockdown).
It was really simple, easy to mix and apply on the hair. It comes with the instructions and you can just follow that.
I actually wanted a subtle balayage finish and therefore didn’t use the bottle provided. I instead had a mixing bowl and a brush and cut up some foil to replicate what they do at salons. There’s a lot of YouTube videos that you can find that do just that. I watched a lot of different ones, and for my hair type before doing it myself. I definitely recommend checking them out if your not experienced in dying your hair.
As for the result, I was quite happy. Firstly because I have very dark brown hair (almost looks black), it’s the darkest shade you can have, so I knew seeing any colour without bleach/lightning would be close to impossible. I therefore just wanted to experiment with a colour that was very bright and just on the ends of my hair. (So if it did look awful I could just chop the ends off).
The first time I attempted it, the colour came out brown, and looked lighter in some shades of light but it was difficult to catch on camera. Sometimes there was shades of red and purple. It basically changed everyday, getting lighter.
I wanted to see more result and therefore bought another box, and repeated the process. This time the result was noticeable in any light. I achieved a brown/ginger red tone to my ends. I was happy with this, the technique I used also made sure it was a gradual blend upwards so it didn’t look bad.
I also have curly/wavy, hair so it’s easier to cover up mistakes then on straight hair.
My hair is thick so I needed more product and bought more boxes. I used three in total, two in on go and one just by itself.
The second time I left it longer than recommended and that worked on my hair a lot better.
I think it’s best to just rinse and dry one piece of hair and see if the colours shows as you want it, if not then leave it for longer.
I also wanted to really experiment with this colour and see what it would look like on my roots (I definitely don’t recommend anyone to try this), but I ended up with hot roots. (It’s not the fault of the product, but just something I wanted to try to see how the colour would look on me if I had lighter hair).
I’ve bought this brought in 5.3 in golden brown too, to complete the balayage look. (It was the same price at Tesco).
In all I’m very happy with the product and the experimenting was fun.
Pros:
– No smell of dye
– Easy application
– Quick results
– Lots of colours to pick from
– Good price
– Decent size (unless u have long thick hair, you’ll need more).
– Long lasting colour
Cons:
– My hair became very dry gradually. You have to keep on top of conditioning your hair and use hair serums and oils to keep the smoothness. I have frizzy hair and I needed to do more caring for my hair afterwards. Although the immediate result will give you very smooth shiny hair, after 5-6 washes it became dry. There is however enough conditioner to last you a while. Just don’t forget to use it.
– ALERT: Does not cover greys ! (I have a couple greys it did not cover them, it did however colour my brown hair).
