Our son loves this train. It’s super strong and can pull long trains. It can also go up and down the slopes that other brands (not mentioning names) cannot do so, despite making the slopes themselves. We use rechargeable batteries and have enough to do a rotation but even so we usually get a really good amount of time before needing to change them. I think we do, with good play sessions, around once a week. Hope that helps. Definitely worth getting and better than other options the cost a lot more!
This little train fits onto the Brio tracks but is so much cheaper. My Grandson absolutely loves it and I’ll definitely be buying more.
Good quality train with a good weight to it. Weight and grip means it out performs other trains we have and doesn’t get stuck as often.
Good value.
Brilliant train great quality. Reuseable batteries and charger needed too though! or go with USB charge version (different product) if reuseable batteries aren’t an option.
Without doubt, this is a brilliant purchase.
My son, who is currently 3 is fascinated by the wooden train and tracks, but being 3 means he is not necessarily delicate when pushing a train along at which point mummy or daddy must jump into the rescue.
So, I got this. The reviews albeit generally positive mentioned low run times. The video attached shows the train still running after 6 hours of play time over the last 3 days.
Although only a small addition, my son now enjoys playing with the train set rather that getting frustrated with it coming apart. This is no speedster but it keeps enjoyment going for hours in my case. For reference, I used GP Ultra AAA batteries and I have soke rechargables on standby for when the time comes to renew the batteries.
As for longevity, no idea. As for fun factor, it’s brilliant and I will probably buy another so we can keep 2 tracks going.
Great little engine compatible with Brio train track. Has a lot of power more than the original Brio engines that we have. It goes round the track quite quickly and can pull a good many carriages. Very good value for money.
Our grandson received this little red engine for Christmas and he loves it. It is compatible with Smyths and IKEA wooden track and many others. The little engine is capable of pulling uphill and rolling downhill with many carriages behind it. The engine has a reverse movement and when moving forward has a light. The batteries have been in since Christmas and lasted about 4 weeks with lots of use. Definitely recommend.
I bought this 6 month ago and it’s getting abused daily by my toddler. I am amazed that it still works!
2 year old grandson loves it. It is really sturdy and unlike some of his other toys he is unable to pull off the wheels. It’s a solid little engine. It keeps going till it can’t, going forward the front light stay on going in reverse the lights are off. The battery life isn’t very long but my grandson refuses to turn it off so it’s hard to tell exactly how long.
I bought the yellow and red Brio equivalent a few months ago and was disappointed by the battery life, the speed and the pulling power so thought I would try one of these and I wasn’t disappointed. It takes 2 AAA batteries whereas the Brio only takes one, but it lasts more than twice as long as the Brio, has a much brighter front light, can pull far more trucks and goes at a much more satisfying speed – and is less than half the price of the Brio train! On/off switch is a bit fiddly to get in the middle off position (especially for my 2 year old grandson) but other than that I would highly recommend this little train.
Amazing battery life. Easy to operate. Good value for money too. Would recommend.
This is a good little train with good pulling power, it can get stuck sometimes but apart from that the little one loves it.
This is the perfect addition to any of the Hape train tracks etc…
My 4 year old son is loving it.
Love this train so glad I found this on Amazon, I purchased a wooden train set from Argos and the train didn’t work and I had a very disappointed 3year old ,I came across this little train and it honestly is a good little runner my son has played with it none stop
Bought this for my 2 year old grandson and he loves it. The button on the top is chunky enough that he can turn it on and off himself. It has a light on the front and goes forwards and backwards . The batteries have lasted well too not changed them yet! It works on the usual wooden track with no issues. We are really pleased with the purchase and will buy more.
Saw some poor reviews of this item so wasn’t sure if it would do the job but it seems fine – don’t know what the problems of others were but it’s powerful enough to pull a few carriages up a decent slope – so the video review of one struggling without carriages has not been my experience- grandson happy anyway
Nice traditional style train. Goes for a long time on good quality batteries. Only down side is that the “forward < off > reverse” toggle slider is a little fiddly to set to “off” position, especially for a two year old.
This a good battery powered train compatible with Brio track. Forward and reverse motion and light on forward running. Has good pulling power and performs well compared to other powered trains we have purchased. Would recommend.
I quite like this little engine. It manages hills quite well on it 0wn, it is a little short of traction for some of the slightly heavier trucks that I have but most it manages alright. I had heard that this engine was really slow, I found though that it was only slightly slower than my Brio Big Green action loco. The apparent lack of a freewheel mode is perhaps a slight drawback, one that I can happily overlook as I have plenty of other engines which can be pushed. This one makes no noises but then its a lot cheaper than my other battery loco. Bot take two AAA batteries and run well for a long time on rechargeable batteries. This loco has a single but quite large light at the front but no lights when reversing.
On balance based on my experience with this one I can recommend the Hape battery powered loco.
Good little train, strong magnets and fits well on the playtive (lidl) tracks we have . It’s not the fastest or most powerful (especially when my son attaches every carriage he has to it ) but it does the job
Don’t understand the negative reviews on this at all. It can pull loads of carriages even up a hill.
Battery life is very good. Obviously it will eventual run down with a 4 year old always leaving it running. But to still lasts days.
Also very quiet. Which is a big plus for use.
Update on this. Recently got the brio freight train as well.
Had to return it as it’s twice the price but only half the quality of this little hape train.
Wheels are bent, won’t stay on, only half the speed and canny pull as much as this trai
I bought two of these as I have two boys and it was the right choice. The trains are well made, feel nice and heavy, and the little light on the front is a nice touch.
The trains are powerful enough to pull other carriages and go up hill, but obviously go faster and better if the batteries are new. Seemingly common sense, but judging by some of the previous low reviews, some buyers might have not realised this.
All in all, very happy with the purchase so far, we might be buying more as the railway expands.
I bought this as a cheaper alternative for our Brio track and it works perfectly, pulls mulitple carriages (all brio too) at a time with no slowing and the light makes it look cool when it goes through the tunnel or under the christmas tree!
My only gripe is it coming without batteries included so you have the faff of unscrewing a tiny compartment to put two AAA batteries in – with a small very excited toddler, it would be nice to just switch on and go!
Good points.
Train and app paired immediately.
App works well.
Appears to be decent build quality.
Sounds are not as harsh as other models. Better quality speaker.
Bad points (minor)
Drive wheel treads are quite thin. Not sure how long they will last pulling rolling stock up ramps before tread wears down to the plastic.
No colour coding of the magnet holder (could have been red)
The engine design is clearly electric (or diesel). However the sounds are clearly steam engine-based. But I accept that diesel and electric engine sounds are not as much fun. Some kids might be confused. I think there would be a market for an app-based steam engine.
Can’t comment on battery life since I’ve only just acquired it.
SOUND
Hape is SLOW and steady, has never derailed or got stuck and can pull a couple of carriages. It is SILENT so that’s good if you like peace and quiet but bad for kids who like sound.
SPEED
Slow, but steady. This is a very slow train but it’s battery life is good so it slows down less than other trains if the batteries are low.
CONTROLS (movement switch)
Hape has a slightly awkward switch, that my 2 year old doesn’t understand and it’s difficult to stop the train without putting it into reverse. The good thing is, it has a reverse!
SOUND and LIGHTS
Has the brightest light but no sound.
STABILITY
Hape is the most stable tarin by far!
PULLING CARRIAGES
Not great at pulling carriages… two maximum up hills.
HILLS
Pretty good up all hills, does get stuck temporarily on a brio hump bridge when it’s batteries are a little low but eventually gets up it.
TUNNELS
Hape is definitely the smallest, therefore best in tunnels and never gets stuck.
BATTERY CHANGE
Hape is easy to change battery – the reason I have this category is that the bigjigs mighty red is so hard to open it makes the experience a real pain – but not with Hape, which has a sensible easy open screw section.
CONCLUSION
Hape is a great little train, a bit boring because no sound and slow but it’s steady and always stays the distance!
