An inexpensive tool for people who want to be coach.Highly Recommend.
Before investing in the Muse 2, I tried doing breath and mindfulness meditation, but was just going through the motions. Using the Muse 2 has allowed me to gain real time neurofeedback from the device and effectively me a nudge back into the meditative state based on brain waves/heart rate/movement/synchronized breathing. Well worth the investment, biohacking in 2022!
I used this device a few times and it did seem to be able to detect my mood with some degree of accuracy. However, I’m not 100% sure it was completely accurate and I actually found it quite distracting. I think I’m just fairly old-school and prefer to meditate without.
Very easy to use and really helps me relax and switch off
I can only say that I while I am still at a novice level, I am reasonably pleased with the purchase. I acquired a biofeedback device years ago (which measured skin resistance and varied in volume depending on how I felt) which I then lost and since then had been from time to time looking for something which could track my various rhythms, and provide some feedback. As a student I was recommended to try meditation – but back then as a student of course I knew better. Now in retirement and experiencing some levels of stress from time to time I felt it was something I should at least try.
You may think you need headphones to connect to you smart-phone or android tablet – but a bluetooth speaker will work just as well. I found the app reasonably easy to download and set up – at least compared with some I have struggled with. Equally easy to use with the headband once charged. I do however have one of the later models of smartphone, purchased because my previous one kept running out of memory to run the already limited number of apps on there.
I use it in the evenings to try to get myself into a frame of mind to be able to sleep. I can drop off at a moments notice during the day but getting off an night can be a struggle and I don’t like taking drugs to sleep. I use a body, heart and mind session, and seem to get positive results. Is this accurate or as some might suggest just a placebo? Well unless I was going to hook myself up to a 25-30K University system to check for accuracy I may not have experimental evidence, but if it leaves me with a sense of relaxation and well being am I going to knock it? The mind can be a very powerful thing that can make you ill, so by extension, it must also be able to help.
I would have liked more ‘initial’ sessions to use it – I have a number of guided meditations downloaded which I have yet to try – something to act as a bridge might have been useful. A link from the app to a personal website or PC version might also be useful – like my fitbit app, as trying to read the screen on a smartphone is not easy!
I have given 4 stars – why? Because I have nothing else to compare it to.
All I can say is that it seems to work for me.
Eleven months ago after much debate I purchased a Muse 2 headset, I wondered if it would be an expensive gadget that lived in a draw somewhere, but no I have used my headband every single day. I enjoy using it, I set aside time each day and actually look forward to my time meditating and getting feedback at the end of a session.
Read a few comments about accuracy, I have found the device to be reasonably accurate, certainly accurate enough for me to see trends and improvements over time. An actual EEG machine will set you back about 25K, involves a freaky shower cap and loads of gel on your head.
After 11 months of use the headband developed a problem, I contacted customer services, expecting to be fobbed off, but no after two emails confirming the problem and with no fuss whatsoever they offered to send me a replacement ASAP.
I am seriously impressed, not only is this a enjoyable product to use, I have found it very helpful and I have meditated every single day since it first arrived. I now can say that their customer services matches their product and I am one very happy person.
If you are thinking of buying one you can do so in the knowledge that the company will be prompt and helpful. The app is fairly straight forward to use, the additional guided meditations are well worth it if you are a beginner, perhaps less so if you are experienced.
Thank you Muse.
Rob
Once you go through the instructions on how to wear it and dive into the app it walks you slowly through each step in setting it up and how to use it. The app itself takes you through some slightly guided sessions on how to use it and how to improve your sessions.
What I don’t like? For it’s price i wish they would include a case for the device as standered. I especially don’t like the fact that after spending a significant amount money and when I start using the app I need to pay an additional subscription to unlock all its guided meditation features.
I found one of the hardest things for starting to meditate by myself was knowing whether I was doing it right or not. With this I have direct feedback of how I am doing and I am on my eight days in a row meditation streak!
Their are also many 3rd party apps for use on mobile and PC.
I’ve been meditating for a while now. I have started to experience tremoring and shaking during my practice. I want to understand whether this was an issue with technique or not.
Muse has been helped me to better understand this issue because of giving real-time feedback, and has helped me to improve my practice a lot.
I cannot speak exactly for its accuracy, as it is difficult to gauge against my subjective experience, however, it feels like the measurements are on point most of the time. I would be careful re the calibration because a ‘good’ session is always benchmarked against the initial calibration. An enhancement of comparing to a former calibration would be useful!
I love this one. I was an occasional meditator before, but with the gamification aspect I am using this one to mediate now everyday. I also use the heart beat and the breathing meditation. Sometimes I feel like I am in a good meditative state, but the device tells me otherwise. But then again, I might be wrong about this.
I feel that this device might be better suited for someone who already meditates. A complete beginner might find it a bit frustrating.
But here’s a tip for everyone: during calibrating the app tells you to basically meditate, but I found that this is not helpful. The calibration picks up your “normal” brainwave pattern, so you should be in a “normal” brainwave state. I would suggest to just close your eyes and let your mind completely flow and think about whatever it wants without concentrating on the breath or whatever. You can even think about your shopping list or what you are going to have for dinner.
I was not expecting this to be as good as it is. It really helps you stick with a meditation programme. have used practically everyday. It si a best buy for me. really look forward to my meditation every evening
I am very happy with my muse 2 headband and use it every day. The only issue I have with it is sometimes I struggle to get the sensor to pick up the heart rate.
If you read books such as Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz or other self-help books that focus on personal change, you will soon learn the benefits of 30 minutes of meditation twice a day. Meditation also helps reduce BP and clears the mind. To meditate properly can be quite difficult. I usually use a special piece of music on CD’s to achieve the correct level of consciousness for mind changing meditation. When this item came up on Vine I jumped at the chance to try it out.
It is simply a band you put on your forehead and connect it via Bluetooth to your phone. You need to download the App and connect it to the device. This then monitors your brain activity, guiding you to deeper meditation. The meditations can last 15, 30 and 45 minutes. You use headphones which play you music and guide you via sounds such as bird tweets to relax deeper and deeper.
So the question, does it really work? Yes, it does if you play with it and give yourself enough time to get the techniques right. Is it my favourite way to meditate, nope, I still prefer my CD’s but it still a great way to learn meditation. The price tag is high and you need to be pretty serious about this field to invest in such an item. For those who want to try it, I can recommend it. For those who do not have this kind of money, look at the plethora of CD’s out there which will help in your pursuit of ever deeper meditative states.
So after using this for a good period of time, I am still unsure of either its accuracy or value for money, but where I was initially sceptical about the item, on the whole, this has reduced and I am somewhat of a convert.
I always struggle to maintain a regular meditative practice in any form. I’ve tried them all and I desperately remain the type of person that needs to have one. MUSE has helped. It has made me want to keep coming back and once set up it is really easy to use.
PROS:
Calming selection of sounds
Guided meditation from good female voice actor
Apple health integration
Easy to use mobile app
1 device can be used with multiple accounts (1 account per phone is necessary)
CONS:
Battery life could be longer – you tend to get 5 x 10 minutes sessions before needing a recharge
You must have a mobile device to pair the headband with
I really don’t know if this all mumbo-jumbo
The bird song can be distracting (more on that shortly)
During each meditation you get bird song for achieving sustained moments of calm, however, I have found that this along with the intense weather noise (which increases when things are going badly) can be very distracting. All of this, however, is adaptable through the app. After each session, you get a little EEG style chart of your brain waves and those moments of calm and busy thoughts are highlighted.
It all seems great – only time will tell if it helps me in the long run. It is expensive but the manufacture of the item is to the highest standard.
I mediatate daily and use the Headspace app for this.
I would imagine that I am like many people who wonder if they are getting it right. I usually assume that if I end the session more relaxed than when I began then I’ve got it about right.
However the opportunity of using a device to help guide you is tempting. I will be honest and say I would not have bought this due to the price tag but the chance to practice meditation with a device which you can get some feedback from was tempting and it may well come down in price as more devices are developed.
The device itself is a headband which you wear when meditating and which reads your brainwaves providing audible feedback to guide you.
Now the first thing to say is that the headband itself can be annoying to get right, I had to try several positions and move it around lots to get it in a place where I could get accurate feedback. Or perhaps I have an odd shaped forehead but I really struggled initially to get this sitting comfortably and working effectively.
You set up the headset, download the Muse app and link the two . The app is easy to use and gives you a few options for sounds to listen to while you meditate and you are the. Given an instruction to get comfortable and do a short meditation while the headset reads your brainwaves.
The sounds you choose to listen to in the app get louder when your mind wanders …as is inevitable. In the Headpsace app you are told to just note “thought” and bring your mind back to the meditation. This device gives you a very audible feedback which I guess may just prod you faster than a busy mind might.
After each meditation you can look at a graph in the app which shows you where you were most relaxed and I guess over time would help you train your mind to make those leaps back from distraction quite naturally and more quickly. I meditate most days and use this headband most days too. It’s definitely a nice guide to help you get the most out of your meditation but at the moment still a pricy one
