The Paris mill is the gold standard, archetype of the modern-day mill, and a staple fixture in any kitchen. Its reputation has spread worldwide, and the mill has come to symbolise a simple, yet generous and refined culinary style.
Recognisable by its generous curves and its complete transparency, the Nancy pepper mill has become a timeless classic over the years, matching all types of decor.
With slender curves, a body in warm, noble wood, and its patented u’Select grind control, the Madras mill is noticed for its elegance and efficiency. It is a singular example of Peugeot’s know-how and ingenuity.
The Isen mill is explicitly designed for crank grinding long pepper, large peppercorns, and various dry spices. Every detail is well-thought-out; the hopper opens gently, and the grind setting is precise. The mechanism is removable for easy cleaning.
So the aesthetics is gorgeous – the top tightening knobs feel like [they may be] pewter. Grinds very well. the tightening knobs do tend to slacken a little but a quick check and [if needed] tighten after each use is [for me] part of the ceremony. The salt and pepper grind nice and finely. Like I said, I’m going to get another set for the kitchen keeping these for the dining table. (as a side, I previously bought the le creuset set for I think 70 but I didn’t get on with them so I gave them to charity and in the meantime made do with the “Barts” supermarket spice aisle mills…that is until now)
These are really cute and look super stylish at the dining table. The only downside is that they’re quite small so need refilling relatively frequently but that doesn’t detract from how well they work.
These mills are worth the premium price they command, as they really mill salt and pepper well. Pepper actually tastes better from it, and salt mills finely. Previous mills we’ve had have done the job, but none creating such fine pepper and salt. The size of the milling is variable, so able to suit anyone.
My partner and I were lucky enough to attend a wedding at Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saison and as well as the amazing food, we were (oddly one might say!) impressed with the Peugeot salt and pepper shakers. So we immediately decided to replace our cheap plastic ones with these (although we couldn’t afford to proper silver plated ones we used at Le Manoir!). The only downside for us is that they are very small and given the amount of seasoning we like on and in our food, we are constantly having to fill them up. As a result, they are only for the table, and we’ve kept the plastic ones to use in cooking… problem solved!
Finally I can stop ‘grinding’ my teeth in anticipation of useless salt and pepper mills! We came across the brand whilst dining out in town. It was a joy to be able to season with one grind, so we turned over the mills to reveal the name Peugeot! A car manufacturer?… Made a mental note and moved on. A month later we were at another local eatery, and again had a similar experience – again Peugeot! I came home and did a search and found the product range. Expensive? – Yes, but definitely worth it. We bought small sizes, which are fine. The mechanism is metal and you can feel it doing the job – the particle size can be altered by tightening the top screw. Very satisfying! I suspect they won’t need replacing for many years.
