Have played it with 4 players and was a huge success. Need time to read instructions and a practice run through is advisable. Love the game and will be a staple every Halloween.
I bought this game as a gift for a friend (a long term avid boardgamer) and watched a LOT of entertaining playthroughs on YouTube. They were good fun to watch so I felt comfortable buying the game.
We eventually were able to schedule a games evening after a couple of months, and we chose the two “simplest” monsters as our foes. I should mention that there are a number of monsters – the classic movie monsters like Dracula, Wolfman and the Frankenstein monster – and each have their own notably differing attributes when both preparing and actually battling them. This gives immense variety and scalability when choosing the difficulty. More monsters make it harder if course.
All players work together to vanquish the monsters before the card deck of Monster actions is exhausted. Periodically, villagers will pop up and players need to protect them by escorting them to safety. If anyone loses a battle, the “terror level” increases so players and villagers need to avoid that – too much terror and you lose the game.
On this first play I wasn’t disappointed. We narrowly lost because the Creature of the Black Lagoon proved annoyingly elusive once we were ready to despatch him. That didn’t matter. We were highly entertained and I look forward to playing it again. Actually, since there is a 1-player option I might even buy my own copy!
Horrified is a phenomenal board game that transports players to a creepy and monster-filled world. The game features classic monsters such as Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, and The Mummy, and the artwork style perfectly captures the eerie and suspenseful atmosphere. Players must work together to defeat the evil creatures and save their town.

I’ve played this with many different types of people and it’s definitely a favourite among them all. Really easy to learn and loads of replayability. I wish the figures were a bit more sturdy as one came a bit bent so doesn’t stand up straight, but it’s definitely something you can easily look past!
Horrified gives that nostalgia feeling while also being a easy to pick up, massively replayable game. With the variety of monsters and adjustable difficulties making the game different with every playthrough.
The game seems well balanced and having played about 6 or 7 times it’s pretty even who wins and it nearly always comes down to the wire! Great fun and the theme and production really come through at this great price point as we got it on sale for 15 pounds absolute bargain!
First board game outside the obvious monopoly and trivial pursuit that i had brought and is very enjoyable and fun to play having to join forces with friends or family to try and save a town from monsters. the rules are easy to pick up for everyone may take a game to remember to do certain steps but once u played a game or 2 u get the hang of it with it giving u a suggestion for your first game to ease you into it. With 6 monsters you can make the game as easy or as hard as you like with most games feeling different having to balance saving villages while trying to defeat the monsters in the village before time runs out.
I’ve never seen the film and really enjoy this game. It’s a strategic group game where you work together as a team. It’s suitable for various different age groups. There’s 2 parts to the game, not really a fan of the second part but the main game is very fun and easy to pick up.
I enjoy playing board games and when I saw this being played on the internet I had to have a copy. The game is easy to learn through the easy to follow rules book. It is a co-operative game where all the players have to help each other to defeat the monsters before they take over the town and you only have so long to complete the tasks. The monsters are from the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s Universal studios films and include Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, invisible man and the Mummy. You play by moving through the town collecting different coloured tokens which are used to defeat the monsters, and cards which can either help you of hinder your progress but you have to work together to win. Each monster has its own difficulty level and different way to defeat them and the more monsters in your game, the more difficult it becomes to win. The game can be played in 30 minutes with one monster but adding more monsters will lengthen the game. This game can also be played in solo mode. It is a great game which I thoroughly enjoy playing this and would have no problem recommending it to lovers of board gaming
A board game I hadn’t played before I bought it, but I had seen very good reviews. So I gave it a try, and wasn’t disappointed. A cooperative game that’s easy to play – but can be hard to defeat. The different monsters provide plenty of variation between games. Great fun, even when the monsters get you!
Fun for all ages, not boring or too simple no matter your age. It might take younger kids a little longer to learn how to play but with a little guidance, it’s absolutely no problem.
The game itself, I love it. The horror theme really comes across brilliantly and the design of the board, the monster, the characters, they’re all brilliant and nice to look at, even the box cover itself is great and brings excitement to me when I hold it.
The game mechanics are fluid and not complicated at all, although I must admit some things in the rulebook needed more clarifying, using examples or similar. I know this because when I looked up something online, it seems so had a lot of other people, about different rules too. Nonetheless I love how every monster plays different and can feel rewarding defeating them one by one, even the difficulty can be easily increased by adding more monsters…it’s even fun by yourself and arguably harder with more players, since it’s more likely for for a player to die, and for other players to not have enough times to achieve objectives.
Cannot recommend it enough to be honest.
played this game a few times and we have found it real good fun.For any one who can rember the old black and white universal monster films ,this game has them all running around think KARLOFF CHANEY LUGOSI or the Frankenstein monster Wolfman and Dracula the players have to stop the monsters and at the same time try to save villagers from a sticky end good fun and a great game
It’s for 2 to 4 players – with one player assuming the role of the shark and the others adopting to roles of Brody, Hooper and Quint. Each character has a different set of skills and abilities meaning it’s in the ‘human’ player’s interest to work cooperatively to develop a strategy to defeat the shark.
Played across 2 phases (“Amity Island” and “the Orca”) with an option to only play a cut-down version of the Orca phase for a shorter, quicker game, the game combines turn-based play, cards and dice rolling in order to achieve objectives.
The game itself is made of good quality materials – a nice thick card base board, wooden player ‘meeples’, thick card tokens and good quality glossy cards for the actions you play.
Well worth getting if you like board games or are looking for something different to play during an evening in as the cooperative aspect makes it much more immersive than simple ‘race to the finish’ games.
The Aesthetics of this board game and the iconic Shark is what draws you in. For Fans, surely it’s a given that you’d want to own this piece of memorabilia.
However, as with any decent board game it takes a while (YouTube videos) to work out exactly what you’re supposed to do.
I’d say just play the game and pick it up as you go. Explaining and making sense of the game play without actually playing it is harder work.
Playing the Game.
It is broken up into 2 Acts.
Act 1. It is similar to (Cluedo) in that you have to track the sharks movements and place items to distract or upset his killing spree.
Act 2. Is like a Top Trump Card “Trade off” game with dice. Both the Shark and The crew have trading cards to attempt to “Kill off” each other.

And unexpectedly who do you think lived the game most of all? Our cockatiel! He took to the green figure and stole it every time we started the game. The last time we wanted to play we couldn’t finish as we laughed so hard we couldn’t concentrate on the game.
It was scene from the circus: the cockatiel landing on the coffee table, walking on the map, grabbing the green figure and walking away with it. We tried to encourage him to take a different figure, but no, only the green guy.
I got this for my partner as a Christmas present, based on numerous positive user and press reviews, and am not disappointed! We play a lot of board games and are quite selective, this was a brilliant addition to our collection.
At first it seems pretty complicated, and very much stacked in the shark’s favour, but as our first game went on and we got towards the end of act 2 it became really tense, with the human characters able to make a huge return and very almost take down Jaws at the last minute. Fun to the end, it’s great to play 2 player (with one person controlling all 3 human characters) or 3/4 player for a more team-based approach.
The first one ordered had awful defects in the components in terms of poor print alignment, however it’s replacement was a perfect set. This game is fun and provided many hours of entertainment on the run up to Halloween and the month of October in general. Four stars due to the earlier quality issues, this is becoming a trend with Ravensburger games…
We’ve had a lot of fun with this game. It is a little confusing to get started, however once you’ve done a few games it gets easier to play as it becomes more automatic and you look at the rule book less.
I’d say that if you are bored of pandemic, then this is a good game to play. The mixture of monsters adds a lot of variety and complexity to the game which means you don’t get bored, great to play 2-4 players.
I really enjoy playing this game. I need to refresh my memory of the rules every time I play it though as there is a lot going on in the game My 10 year old enjoys it too but prefers using the easier monsters rather than the more complicated ones. Good fun, and the board is lovely.
If like me you love those old black and white Universal Monster Movies and are a fan of gothic and vintage horror then you really can’t go wrong with this game. The tokens, the cards, the board and the monster sheets are all beautifully done with fantastic, engaging artwork which just adds to the atmosphere of the game. The monster minis are a decent size and quality for those who also like to paint them.
A lot of love has clearly gone into the game and I’m sure having this officially licensed by Universal ensured that everything was just perfect and just how the creators intended the game. For example, villagers/characters names are the same as in the films etc.
There’s so much to this game that at first the rule book seems a little overwhelming. I suggest you read the rule book as you play and you’ll pick it up in no time. Choosing how many and which monsters you play against means no game is ever the same and you can control the difficulty of each session. I have played this twice with my partner and twice solo (yes, the game allows for solo play). Playing solo comes with some differences which is refreshing after you’ve done several games with other players. I throughly enjoyed solo play.
I’d say each game (depending on how many players and how many monsters you put on the board) lasts around 1 hour to 1 and half hours at most.
Overall, it’s a really gorgeous looking game with great spooky atmosphere with fantastic, fun gameplay. Anyone who loves those old movies and their classic monsters will surely admire this game. It’s also a MUST HAVE for lockdown halloween!
Like any game it can seem daunting when you look at the pieces and instructions but is actually quite straightforward and if you play one single player walk through as you read, it’ll become fairly clear fairly quickly, especially if you’ve ever played Pandemic.
There are also videos available about the instructions and game play in action, if you prefer to learn that way. (I don’t, but it did help me see that picking up items is one action, not one action per item… which was literally a game changer!)
My six year old can play and loves it. Granted he hasn’t got a brilliant long term strategy ability yet but he completely understands the rules after one game and is now making suggestions for what he and other players could do that are valuable contributions. We have won on occasions purely because he could see an opportunity that I couldn’t!
The game is clever in that there are multiple ways in which luck can affect you, and yet it is a co-op strategy game through and through. If you forget to strategise and plan ahead, the monsters will rule. But you can also be scuppered by things you didn’t predict. This makes it interesting every time and not at all easy to routinely win. There is always a sense of a fight about it and I certainly find I play with increasing urgency as the game goes on!
You’d think six monsters would get old quickly (if you see what I mean!) but there are a lot of combinations to play with that keep it interesting. You can also find fan-made expansion monsters online, if you so wish.
If you like Pandemic, you’ll like this.
If you like working together instead of against each other, this works brilliantly.
The monster premise keeps it interesting, as do the luck variables such as cards, dice, items picked at random and character abilities/actions.
It is far from guaranteed that you’ll win, so every game is exciting and challenging.
I love this game and it has so far overshadowed everything else in our game cupboard.
The game play is straightforward and reasonably quick to get going. It’s a good game to get going with as it’a nowhere near as complicated as some we’ve played.
There is a clear sense of progression. The instructions guide you to tackle Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon first and then to build up in difficultly by tackling various monsters and then increasing the numbers.
Horrified is a collaborative game where the players work together to defeat and enemy. (Like Pandemic but without all the tiny cubes – which if you’re like me find a little bit of a fiddle). We loved the way you have to deal with the villagers and at times have to decide whether you sacrifice a villager to save yourself.
We love the Hammer Horror theme and would make a brilliant gift for any film and game lovers. It’s also not the most expensive game out there so that’s a bonus.
What I love about this game is how adaptable it is to be able to be played with a group of up to 5 or for solo play.
Solo play works really well. I can’t think of many games like this which are this intuitive.
We played this as a family & even my youngest (11) who gets bored easily stuck with it & enjoyed it.
It didn’t take too long to play & I have found games tend to run from 30mins to 45mins.
The rules are easy enough to understand & laid out very Cleary.
The cardstock that the playing pieces are printed on feel really nice. I really appreciated the quality of the product.
Also, the style of the artwork captures the theme nicely.
I completely purchased this on a whim & knew nothing about it prior to my purchase but I am glad I did. It is a fantastic game with plenty of replayability.
The game uses the famous Universal Studios monsters of the 1930s, and the miniature figures are detailed and delightful, adding flavour and enjoyment to the experience (they can be painted, I’m sure, but that’s beyond my capabilities, though I’m sure painted figures would no doubt enhance the theme and the game immersion.
The board shows a central-European Victorian Gothic infused town map complete with graveyards, crypts, caves, barn (for the obligatory monster-fighting pitchforks), a laboratory and an institute (amongst others). The board design and the characters are a perfect fit so as to give game-playing the feel of being involved in the plot of one of those wonderful black-and-white films of yesteryear.
Picking up the game was fairly straightforward, maybe about 20 to 30 minutes tops, with a slow and steady start to the first game, just to let things settle in and let the players become comfortable. The rules are concise, and the rule-book is well-written and not too long, plus it has plenty of helpful diagrams and illustrations to aid in getting to grips with things, and to help players find answers as a question crops up.
Each player takes on the role of a ‘Hero’ as, together, they work to weaken each monster before finally eliminating them from the game. There are 7 heroes, a mixture of male and female, and each has a different power that makes it unique.
There are a total of 7 monsters, though because Frankenstein and Mrs Frankenstein come as a pair, effectively there are a choice of six different monsters to work against in each game. As you start playing, the rulebook suggests beginning with just two monsters, to help you get to grips with the way the game plays and how the monsters can be defeated. We usually play against three monsters at a time, which is sufficiently taxing. Several times we’ve tried playing against four in a game but we’ve not managed to win yet.
The different monsters are also rated with different difficulties – in terms of how hard they are to defeat in the game, so you can choose to make your task as easy or as hard as you want by selecting different combinations of monsters for each game. The fact that there are seven different heroes to choose from and six different monsters to choose to play against (each with different characteristics and problems to solve) means every game will be different and unique, so it’s extremely replayable with different demands and challenges each time.
Can’t recommend this highly enough. Admittedly it’s not a heavy, demanding board game, so won’t be for everyone – especially those wanting high levels of complexity and strategic thinking – but if you’re looking for a charming, engaging, easy-to-play yet satisfying 60 to 90 minutes of gameplay (depending on number of players and number of monsters) for anyone aged 10 to 100, you can’t go wrong.
The game looks great on the shelf. And the cards are retro. I think the unboxing is the fun part here. We played it as a family, youngest boy is 6. He was the shark in Act 2 of the game and seemed really chuffed with hinself. I can’t see us playing this over and over, but because it is a puzzle and a game I like having it around.
I wasn’t disapppointed, it’s an awesome game, perfect for 4 players. It keeps you thinking and the 2 act structure is excellent (it’s 2 games in one). Any one who loves games will love it, and anyone who loves Jaws will love it, anyone who loves game and loves Jaws, will will smile like a son of a bitch. The only downside was there were a lot of pieces, and when you add in the snacks and beers, you soon realise you’re gonna need a bigger table.
It isn’t as hard to learn as I had anticipated. My daughter picked the game up straight away and I managed to teach the basics to my 8 year old daughter too.
The monsters all have complexity levels meaning you can pick simpler monsters (Dracula) to play with kids and more complex monsters (The Mummy) to play with adults.
The best thing about the game is that it is co-operative so you win and lose together. That is a great bonus for happy family gatherings.
The cards are all nicely done but a minor gripe is that the monster figures look a little delicate so keep that in mind when handling them.
Horrified is very Pandemic-like, you have your characters on a map and need to make your way to different locations, each of the characters have unique special abilities and a limited number of actions they can perform on their turn and after one players turn there is a ‘monster phase’ which is very similar to the ‘infect cities’ phase of Pandemic.
I won’t go too much into the gameplay, but this will be slightly harder for the average person to pick up than Monopoly or Cluedo, but is actually a very simple (but challenging!) game once you have had a few turns and get used to the mechanics. There is an excellent instructional video on YouTube from Watch It Played, and I’m sure there are multiple other very good videos to show how to play the game.
