Ravensburger Scotland Yard Strategy Board Games for Families
Ravensburger Scotland Yard Strategy Board Games for Families – Kids & Adults Age 8 Years Up – 2 to 6 Players – Christmas Gifts
Setup
First decide who will play the role of Mr X!
Mr. X Receives: 1x transparent playing piece, The Mister X visor, 1x Travel Log, 1x Black Ticket, 1x Double-Move Ticket
Each Detective Receives: 1x Playing Piece, 1x Ticket Board, 4x Underground Tickets, 8 Bus Tickets, 11 Taxi Tickets.
The aim of the game is for the detectives to catch Mr. X who can travel via any form of transportation without any tickets. Mr. X is also invisible for most of his turns so it’s up to you to try and predict his next move.
The Detectives must use their transport tickets to try and catch him but they need to be careful as they only have a limited amount of tickets. Luckily all the detectives can coordinate with each other and narrow down their search for the dreaded Mr. X.
Gameplay
In each round, Mr. X first makes his move but only records his move in his travel log – unseen by the detectives. His playing piece remains off the board for the time being. Once Mr. X has completed his turn, the detectives take their turns in any order.
All detectives share the same goal: catching Mr. X either by one of them finishing their move on the same station as Mr. X or blocking all stations with detectives leaving no free station for Mr. X to move to.
As Mr. X is invisible he must record his moves on his travel log however before his 3rd, 8th and 13th moves he must reveal his location by placing his playing piece on the station he is at. The Detectives then need come up with a strategy and narrow down the search before he disappears again or they run out of tickets!
End of Game
The detectives win the game if:
– A detective finishes his move on the same station as Mister X. If Mister X happens to be invisible at that time, he has to show himself.
– Mister X has no free stations the he can move to. All possible stations are blocked by detectives
Mister X wins, if:
– He manages to travel across London for 22 rounds without being caught by the detectives. The round is only over once the detectives have also completed their moves.
An excellent game and Bronze Winner of the 2014 Primary Teacher Awards

You have to get this, this is a great game! We don’t play it 2 player so can’t comment on that but 4 players it’s sooo good
The whole family love this game and it was easy to learn the rules. A fun game of tactics and team play.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my three children and they love it. We have only played the simpler set of rules so far and it is fun to play and doesn’t take too long so holds everyone’s attention well.
The concept of this game is very clever, and you have to constantly think and be 2 steps ahead.
There is a map of London with stops. Each stop is numbered. You have cops, detectives and Mr X. You have 22 moves to catch Mr X, using 3 modes of transport.
Mr X is invisible but you get 5 sightings of him which help you to try and grab him.
Fast paced, great mental stimulation, we really enjoyed this as a 2 player team.
The pieces are of good quality, colourful and comes with instructions for junior players so a game for the whole family…. And it’s good value for money.
Similar concept to the game Ticket to Ride which we adore!
Great strategy game if your bored with monopoly
Really enjoyed playing this game over Christmas. Easy to learn. We found the advanced game easier to follow than the beginners guide.
We played with our 9 year old granddaughter, who enjoyed being the spy on the run.
I actually love this game. I played it at my brothers and then bought it for two different groups of friends. Its really fun, can be played with 2 as easily as with more players (most games are rubbish when played with just 2 people!) and the price is great for what you get! Can play over and over again as it’s different every time, and depending on what role you play brings a different atmosphere to the gameplay.
This was great value for money and the board and pieces are if good quality. It is quite a complex game to play bit I think after multiple times the playing of it would get easier.
What a brilliant game I can’t praise it highly enough bought it for my eight year old but the whole family love it including stroppy teenager great that everyone other than Mr X works together so could include slightly younger children although no younger than six and only as a detective very strategic game that’s fun but makes you think only gripe the travel pieces that you use with Mr X board are a bit loose slightly annoying but otherwise can’t fault i
I already have this game and my son who now lives in New Zealand wanted it for his family so it has been sent there for them to enjoy, its an exciting game especially for the robber who has to outwit the rest of the players trying to catch him and its nerve wracking every time the robber has to reveal where they are. His girls are only 4 and 7 so I looked at the junior version but that looked too easy, I feel this will make them think more and they lived in London before NZ so it will remind them of home as it were. I would certainly recommend this for children or adults.
Fun easy to understand family board game for 2-6 players.
Based on a map of inner London, one player is Mister X and the rest of the players are detectives who work as a team to try and trap and catch him.
It’s a turn based game where the pursuit is undertaken by bus, tube or taxi.
We have played the game half a dozen times so far with Mister X failing to elude his chasers, so this is a real challenge.
There is a 2 player and beginner version of the main game.
It is great that there are two sets of rules included. We opted for the ‘beginners rules’ at first, to play with our 5 and 6 year old. This means you can see where Mr X moves to, apart from turns 3, 8 and 13 when he goes invisible. However it is a stripped down version so you only use bus or taxi to get around. Our kids quickly got the hang of it and wanted to play the full version. This is much trickier as Mr X is invisible for the majority of the time (and is a more fun role to play, as a result). After two rounds my 6 year old felt confident enough to have a go at being Mr X. It is nice that the detectives all work together to devise a strategy to capture Mr X (also allowing younger players to join in). A nice family friendly intro to strategy-type games.
The game is fantastic as it is not just a random dice game and instead it relies on strategy , once you get the hang of it it is very easy to play, the instructions were very simple to follow and you can play a beginner and advanced game. Our youngest player was just turned 8 and had no difficulty in joining in actively and by the third time of playing was confident enough to be Mr X and evaded capture ,This game encourages friendly team work so Mr X does not evade you. We are a family of 5 and have now played multiple times with a variety of numbers of players the package says that you can play with just 2 players however it did not work brilliantly then and there are better two player strategy games out there. If you like board games i would say give this a try.
Bought this for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas as decided to try and play more games as a family. Once we started with this, that was the morning gone – happily played 5 games of it in quick succession. Once you have mastered the rules, it is fairly straightforward but a lot of fun (and she loved it). Always interesting seeing Mr X pop up at certain time points and then the guessing game about where he could be going next. We have easily played with 2 people as well as 3. With 2 you just have one as Mr X and the other person takes on the role of 2 detectives and 2 police. Worked just as well. Would definitely recommend this game – we are addicts!
The rules can take a little bit of getting your head around, but once you’ve got it it all makes very clear sense. The game is a city-wide version of cat and mouse – one player plays a fugitive trying to avoid the police while the other players are the detectives and police officers trying to track them down, the catch is that the fugitive only surfaces and reveals her location every 5 or so moves, and so the detectives have to use a bit of guess work and logic to work out which direction she could have moved (they can see the form of transport used each move, but not the destinations).
There’s only limited replay potential with the same set of players, as there aren’t a huge range of strategies that the fugitive can employ, but it’s a great game to play with guests on a rainy afternoon.
I purchased this board game as a gift for a very young 9 year old boy. He had seen it advertised on television and was very excited to receive it. The game arrived on time and was well packaged. The idea behind the game is a very simple one, however I thought it may be too difficult for this particular 9 year old. Gladly I was proved wrong and he was able to grasp the concept easily. We have not progressed beyond the ‘beginners’ game play as yet but we have played a number of times with 3, 4 and 5 people varying in ages between 6 and 46, all have enjoyed the game. A brief explanation of the game is that one player (Mr X) has to travel around London using various modes of transport to evade capture by the other players who although each have their own playing piece can collaborate and work together to capture Mr X. An enjoyable game.
We bought this as a gift my in-laws last Christmas. We enjoy playing board games together and had previously gifted them Ticket to Ride, so knew they would enjoy the style of game.
It took quite a long time to get to grips with the instructions compared to other strategy games we have played, however once we understood the rules we were hooked! The game requires players to split into “police” and “Mr X” with the police having the aim of catching Mr X, and Mr X having the aim of evading the police. Players navigate the London travel system, by walking or getting on the bus or tube. Since transport costs money, players have a finite distance they can travel each turn, and a finite number of times they can travel by tube or bus. When we started playing, the player who was Mr X felt a little ganged up on, but after a few games, we realised that Mr X has the upper hand (more moves on public transport and their position is secret whereas the police are shown on the board) so found it was just as fun to play on your own against the rest of the players. Also, Mr X gets to wear a silly looking visor so that the police can’t see him or her looking at the game board when making a move.
This is a really fun game to play but has a learning curve so it wouldn’t suit those with a short attention span.
