This is the perfect family game with older kids. We sit there in the evening playing and it really makes you think. It’s so well designed and my daughter absolutely loves it. Would recommend!
This is a fun family game and a novel way of playing through the story itself. Smaller than expected but I can see a lot of fun to be had with this. More immersive than your usual board game since this is played like a story book. Recommend.
This is a quality board game. From the box and its design to the pieces included, every element is really well made and of excellent quality.
The game is divided into several chapters which aren’t too long and can be played ‘individually’ (by this, I mean, you don’t have to play them all in a row, you could play chapter 1, stop and then carry on another day onto chapter 2). This is great as it makes for a versatile game that doesn’t take up a lot of time if you don’t want it to. The game does follow the main premise of the Wizard of Oz story but even those who haven’t watched the film will be able able play and enjoy the game. Overall, it is a lot of fun, simple and best enjoyed with family and friends.
My kids and I love this game. looks great, plays great. well balanced between losing and winning. Gets is to work as a team. Theme is great for young kids. Wish I created it. components are sturdy, quality is fantastic. I was looking for a game that was different from the traditional family board games, and am happy to say I found it. My kids usually hate board games, but were surprised they loved this one. Would highly recommend.
Wizard of oz adventure book, based on 6 chapters of wizard of oz
it’s a cooperative board game played on book, to complete may need 2.5 hours, but can save you progress to do the six chapters.
The game is a family game with easy action deal 4 card each. play through the action card, you can discuss your actions. I would say this a gateway family game, good for family, not sure avid board gamers will like it; however if you like a bit of a nostalgia you may like it. I recommend for family.
Pros
– Popular film franchise
– Easy game for families
– Brings families together
Cons
– Bit basic for advanced gamers
This game has been designed for 1-4 players with the aim of working together to defeat the wicked witch. The pieces and board itself are rather premium and well put together. You don’t have to know the Wizard of Oz story but it will of course help. You work together as a team to complete the chapters. It will take a little time to get used to so it makes sense to have a adult playing at first but like with most board games, once you get the gist of it then it flows much better and often more enjoyable when playing for the second time onwards. Our family really enjoy playing this game and its for all ages. Happy to recommend.
This review is for the Ravensburger The Wizard of Oz Adventure Book – Family Strategy Board Games for Kids and Adults Age 10 Years Up – 1 to 4 Players
A nice family game that provides a lot fun for me and the family. My kids have always love the wizard of oz movie so they immediately liked this game and recognised the characters. The game is well made and would recommend.
We’re big fans of board games and old movies in our family. We’ve watched the original Wizard of Oz movie together lots of time, so this Ravensburger game based on the 1939 film was an instant hit. The first time we set the game up, my eldest son took one look and said, “It’s like Wizard of Oz D&D”. By which he meant that it was more of an in-depth roleplaying game like Dungeons & Dragons than a pick up and play family board game. The centrepiece of the game is an attractive, board book with six chapters. Additionally, there’s Story Cards, Special Cards, Plot Cards and Counters, which will all seem very familiar to role playing fans. There are six chapters and in each chapter, there are four challenges to complete. It takes maybe fifteen to twenty minutes to complete a chapter so potentially a full game takes between an hour and a half to two hours. Although you can just play a couple of chapters as the mood takes you. If you’ve not played this type of role playing / strategy game before, you may be surprised at the complexity of it. The suggested age range is from ten years, but I think if you’ve played similar games and have read and understood the instructions then younger players can be encouraged to join in.
I have never seen a game like this before and upon first impressions it is really charming. The playing pieces are rather exquisite and the book features eye catching designs and set ups which differs slightly per chapter. The basic premise of the game is to work together as a team to complete the chapter. This is done through exchanging cards and through prompts from ‘plot’ cards. In each chapter you are working against something e.g in chapter one there is a ‘tornado’ game piece which moves and you have to complete the chapter before the tornado reaches the house. Every chapter is different and is themed around very well known concepts from the Wizard of Oz with each chapter requiring slightly different game pieces. If you’ve never read the book and only seen the movie you are in good hands, it will all make sense to you.
I will say it took quite some time to grasp the concept and at first it was on the frustrating side both for me as the adult and for the child keen to get the pieces out and choose a character. I’d advise any family to look at the game ahead of the kids to understand the rules in order to avoid squabbles.
To play the whole game is quite a long process, a few hours for sure. It is satisfying to complete the game but when it takes as long as it does I’m unsure at this point if it appeals to play it again. On a plus you don’t necessarily have to play the whole ‘book’, you could choose a chapter or play it gradually over a few nights. I feel this game will appeal far more to those who know and love the Wizard of Oz. It’s certainly possible to play it without any prior knowledge of Oz but in my opinion the detailing would be lost on you if you fall into that category.
Too many board games now seem to be gimmicks and require no skill and often don’t even have a board. Ravensburger make a lot of products and boardgames are one of them. They are a brand that I keep an eye out for as they produce proper games. ‘The Wizard of Oz Adventure Book’ is one, and feels like a board game as an event, as they used to be in my youth. This is not a versus game, but co-op. You work as a team to get through the various chapters of the story.
It is easier to succeed than the likes of ‘Pandemic’ but, like that game, it requires some thought and knowing of the rules to get the best from the game. It would not work for small children or the impatient. I found that a family board game night with the older children worked best as the others slept. It reminded me of some of the translated games I have played from Germany, but with an instantly recognisable story and characters.
For the current asking price of under thirty pounds, I think it is great looking. A board game that wants to be more than just a throwaway supermarket buy. The board acts like a book that turns the chapter for the next session. The pieces are modelled versions of the characters. Yes, they could be even more high end, but that would be for the deluxe set. You are getting a very nice board game, that may be a little complicated to those used to snakes and ladders.
Ravensburger are known for quality jigsaw puzzles this game follows the same quality standard. Age range 10 plus is probably right and although not essential knowing the wizard of OZ films does help a little.
The instructions are straightforward. The game is divided into 6 chapters and each one lasts approximately 15 minutes. The chapters can be played and then left and returned which is really useful when there are younger ones playing.
A good game to play at Christmas with extended family or friends.
5 stars
The game is very well made.
The material is sturdy and the colors are bright.
The small figurines are really well made too.
The story itself is interesting.
Read the guide and all the rules before you try to play.
Great value for money and a really nice gift.
Fun quality board game
Based on The Wizard of Oz
The set of the game is the board game of the game is a book which has 6 chapters (which cover different parts of the book/film) which players have to complete tasks by turning the cards so you can move onto the next chapter. Players have to work together to complete the task.
The game comes with game board/book, tokens, cards and character figures.
Instruction leaflet is included although instructions are also on each chapter.
For 1-4 players and it takes roughly 2hrs to complete the game (although you can stop and save your process after each chapter). Suitable for ages 10+. Perfect for all the family.
The game can be replayed multi times as the outcome will be different each time due to the draw of the cards.
Would make a ideal Christmas gift.
Fantastic quality from well know brand.
The only con I have that I feel it is slightly expensive.
The thought that has gone into the design and making of the game is excellent.
Would highly recommend
The product page photos do not do this game justice. It’s beautiful. It has a wonderful vintage look and feel. This is like something from an old toy shop emporium or maybe you would find it sitting on the book shelf of a kid back in the 1950s. Attention to detail, care, and passion have gone into the entire game. The pieces, the board, the cards are all just as lovely as the box itself and the whole thing oozes charm and quality.
This is a cooperative game. Players will have to work together. The board itself is a story book. There are 6 chapters in all. Each board is a chapter. You follow through the story of the Wizard of Oz movie. Each chapter ( board ) is different. There are various quests you need to complete. On the left side of the board it tells you the set up, the rules, and how you win. The right side tells you what you need to do so you win. Think of them as quests. Each chapter has its own characters and quests. I liked that each board was different. It’s almost like 6 board games in one.
The game took me just over 3 hours to finish. You won’t have to complete it all in one go though. You could easily just play one of the chapters and set it all up again or just leave it somewhere on a table and come back to it again. This would be a great game for all the family to play together.
I really liked this game, however there are two things I think are important to point out. It’s geared toward families and a younger audience. Not that you can’t have fun with it ( we did ) and especially if you are fans of the movie but older children might be bored. Secondly I think there isn’t that much repeatability. Once the story is done, I’m not sure how much you would want to go back and play it. I don’t see it as something you would do over and over. It’s more like you play it and maybe some months go past and feel like running through it again.
This is a wonderful game ( especially for fans ) it’s fun vintage look, quality materials, and interesting game mechanics make it a great buy.
This is such a great classic. The game involves a book with multiple storylines or chapters which means you’ve got lots of different games all in one.
The instructions are relatively easy to follow and the change in every game but suitable for older children to get the most of.
Good family fun, well designed and a classic.
The Wizard of Oz is an Adventure Book Game for 1-4 players working together to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. You don’t need to know the story but doing so would help. The game is played by completing challenges as detailed int he book, which is the “board” of the game. All the main characters are here – Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Glinda and, of course, the Wicked Witch. There are 6 chapters to play through as you pass along the Yellow Brick Road and head home. Overall gameplay is good with enough to keep you entertained. It’s a nice spin and something a bit different, to combine the book and game in one. The artwork is really nice and it’s bright and colourful.
The Ravensburger The Wizard of Oz Adventure Book is very different to any other board game I’ve played before, in that you don’t play against the other players, you have to work together to progress so the story of the Wizard of Oz. This didn’t go down well at first as we’re a bit of a competitive lot, but we got the idea in the end.
Each double page spread represents a chapter, and the players work their way through each chapter to progress. The game follows the plot of the story (closer to the story told in the movie), so each chapter will be instantly recognisable to anyone who’s familiar with the Wizard of Oz.
The book/ game board is reminiscent is solid carboard, think along the lines of a toddler’s boar book. The images are well rendered, and the book really does feel like the movie.
I would have like to have seen a bit more colour in the playing pieces, they are nicely detailed by the flat colours don’t show that off very well.
In summary, if you’re looking for family friendly fun that isn’t likely to kick off any feuds, this will do the trick, if you’re a fan of the content then doubly so.
Ravensburger are known for quality board games, and this is no exception. Everything about it has been made with care and to a high standard, the box, the pieces, the game board and cards are all well made with good quality materials.
The recommended age to play is 10+, and although I agree my son who is nearly 9 enjoyed playing with us. My daughter 6 however is definitely too young for this game.
As you can see from the photos all the pieces and the game board are modelled perfectly on the Wizard of Oz story and careful follows the original look and feel. If like me The Wizard of Oz has a special place in your heart, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this.
This a great game to either gift to someone who loves the film, or just to buy for a game with the family.
The box looks lovely.
The game is simple and fun for the family to work through the chapters to defeat the wicked witch.
Great idea and gets the family away from the TV, or you could have the film on in the background.
This board game is really good fun and suitable for anyone, and let’s face it, who hasn’t even seen the Wizard of Oz film? So this is already off to a great start. The game is divided into 6 chapters. lasting 15mins each and there are some really nice figurines included too of the characters. Its good fun, though like most games, can get a bit repetitive at times! The instructions are fairly clear, though in places could be better.
Overall, a good game that would be great to play (1 to 4 players) over Christmas or during a family event, as it doesn’t need hours and hours of time and can break between the chapters to resume another day.
This is a game with a difference in that there is no single winner or loser. All players must work together to complete each chapter and get Dorothy along the Yellow Brick Road to see the wizard and return her home again. If this fails, all players have failed, and if it succeeds everyone is a winner!
The whole game is beautifully designed and printed. The game board is in the form of a storybook and pages are turned at the end of each section to reveal the next chapter to play. Certain tasks have to be completed in order to move on, and obstacles occur thanks to the turning and use of various cards. The playing pieces are in the form of the main characters- so we have Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly lion, with the good and bad witches also affecting play.
The game is simple enough to appeal to children but involving enough for adults to enjoy too. You don’t have to be a fan of the story- or even have seen the film- but it helps. I suppose the point is that it involves players to work together to achieve the outcome- so great for family play. However, due to the nature of the game it is possible to enjoy the game as a solo player too. Whilst not too taxing, it is very enjoyable for all concerned.
The game, once set up, looks extremely attractive and colourful. The board is made of a thick cardboard, and it can be a little difficult to lay the board flat without bending against the bindings, so a little care needs to be taken. The playing pieces are moulded plastic, and though these would have been much nicer if painted, no doubt that would have increased the price of the product and made it less likely to sell as a result.
It is hard to determine who this game is aimed at. It has echoes of the role playing type of game format, and there is a certain amount of strategy involved, so despite the subject matter I think most ages will get something from it. I can imagine it being ideal for a family to join in together on Christmas afternoon, for instance, which can only be a good thing. Up to 4 players can take part at a time.
All in all, I think this would be a good purchase for all the reasons mentioned above and is a good alternative to the usual board games available. Whether it gets the kids away from the computer games is another thing entirely, but it can only be a good thing to encourage shared family group activity such as this!
It’s not very often now that you see Wizard of Oz based things and as a fan of the film growing up watching it I spotted this game and thought I’d give it a go. It’s something that I can play solo or with family which is nice that there is the solo option. The board/ book is well made and are the colourful little characters. The aim is to work you way through the game book each chapter at a time to see if you can win. I think it’s a game I should be able to play more than once and still enjoy especially as it varies it a bit playing on my own or with up to 3 others. It’s very visually appealing so overall I’m happy with it.
This is a great little board game – my family loved playing it. It took a while to get our heads around it, but when we did it was really good fun.
You basically play through six chapter of a book – each chapter has it’s own board to play. Throughout each section you have to accomplish missions and challenge. I don’t want to reveal too much because a lot of the outcomes depend on what cards you are dealt and half the fun of the game is learning how it works.
Its quite competitive but requires team co-operation and it has lots of twists and turns. It took us around two and a half hours to complete it the first time but that’s because it was new to us, however you can save your progress, for instance pausing at the end of a chapter, and resume it at a later date.
What I like about this game is the replay value – each time you play it, it will have a different outcome.
The quality of the book and pieces seem to be good quality and able to withstand lots of use.
Overall, this is a great family game that will keep you thoroughly entertained.
The rules could be a little clearer but overall, a Really good game that the kids loved playing.
You don’t really even need to be a fan of the movie although it does help, good detail of the figures and we enjoyed going through all the chapters.
Recommend.
