Great little do hickey when soldering things that require as many hand Ganesh!
I used this for electrical soldering, and I was able to produce some neat joints. It’s a bit fiddly to get the joints to the right place, but once that’s done it works well
Definitely beats some of the others on here- it’ll do for soldering smaller PCBs and the magnifier is top notch. Great value for money and good materials- you get a glass magnifier, and a solid metal construction.
That being said, the arms are not sturdy and will come off easily- you need to be careful. They’re also not that stiff. You have to constantly retighten the setup for it to be good, and I doubt it’s longevity.
I do not enjoy soldering at all as I only have two hands and both of them are really too wobbly for soldering, but this makes it just about bearable.
Handy Crocodile Clips to hold parts of my model while I paint, but the teeth on them leave marks on what I have already painted, :/
The crocodile clips work well, but have strong springs, so worth slipping some shrink wrap over the teeth; and I haven’t needed to use the magnifying glass.
A downside with the clips however, is that they do not slide along the horizontal bar, which would have been helpful for the jobs I was doing.
Overall though it was a great help and will be again no doub
Use this product as my 3rd hand when soldering. Allows me to hold wires in position and frees up my hand to do the soldering. Magnifier is a bit strong for my eyes and take a little to get used to, but once you have It’s a doddle!
Had issues with one bolt shearing whilst setting it up but just replaced it with one from my toolbox. It’s a great tool and very “handy” and I love it. Do bear in mind though you can’t expect to pay for beer and get champagne! That said, I love mine and would totally buy it again.
This is great for using for beading wire jewellery. I’ve not given 5 stars as the grips do mark wire if not very carefully placed- could ideally do with flat headed grips!
Does the job when I can’t afford much more!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I ordered one of these after reading other reviews saying they were essentially rubbish but it seems fine to me. I ordered a second one and would have no problem ordering more. I use them for commercial photography where sometimes things need to be held in certain positions often for long periods of time while shots are taken. How I use them is by taking them to bits and then reassembling them so work more like an articulating arm with one clip at the end rather than the clip at each end of a horizontal bar—I don’t use the magnifying glass. If I need a longer arm I just remove the clip from the end of one and attach the longer arm from another one in it’s place. I agree they can be a bit fiddly sometimes but once they are assembled they’re fine. I have no problem with stability or movement or tightening of screws and for the price they’re great and do the job of holding things just fine. The most annoying thing for me is that they come in that horrible hard plastic wrapping that’s almost impossible to open!
This is really good for working with soldering. I use it for my jewelry work but the clamps are very strong so it can mark different mediums, becareful. I wish the magnifying glass was slightly bigger, but not complaining. Does the job
It’s cheap and it does work quite well. For the money, you do get a lot of “helping hand” but it’s hard to adjust things properly as the bolts are quite fiddly. But the base is heavy so it doesn’t move around too much. Can’t complain.
Works for what I wanted to use it for. The magnifying glass is decent and can actually help a lot to paint small minis and their details. It’s possible to notice that the metal part is not from the best material there is but it works and if you take care you won’t break it. Price is fair.
I bought this item after spending a few days struggling to tin the connections of a chip to be added to a motherboard. Numerous attempts to complete the tinning prior to this purchase ended in frustration and I have to admit, some swear words!!!
This item comes in plastic packaging and was easy to remove with a good sharp pair of scissors. The base has a really good weight to it and the joints appear strong enough to hold some weight steady. Due to the base size, I don’t think this would be very good if you were trying to solder onto large flat items as I think the base would topple over due to the small footprint. However, I’ve now used it for a few projects and the jaws have held the pieces together perfectly without movement. There is a wide range of movement in the arms to get the placement right and the magnifying glass is really strong and out of the box, really clear and mine was scratch free. It is well made and I can see this lasting for a very long time.
I would definitely recommend it over some of the more costly versions as this seems to work perfectly. If I had to criticise it for anything, I would say that it could do with some kind of rest for the soldering iron.
If you found this review helpful, can you please help me by clicking on the helpful button, thanks. Any questions, please feel free to ask and I will try to answer as best as I can.
A bit fiddly to set it up, for the job i needed it for I needed to hold a delicate item in both claws and delicately silver solder a closing ring on three pieces of jewelry. First one took some time – but once I had a system worked out the second and third were completed much quicker.
I like the solid iron base and the design of the base. For most lightweight tasks the unit will still on my workdesk without movement allowing me to work. However for more heavier work the base is designed so that it can be positioned at the edge of my workstation and a simple small “G” clamp will retain it in place without interfering with the space you need to work in.
Hope this helps someone
For what it is I really can’t argue with it. I’ve so far used this to make a custom cable to take the dignal from a BBC Microcomputer (RGB, 5pin DIN) to a Commodore 1084S monitor (DB9) with the inclusion of a few resistors and some shriunk wrap tubing. It worked VERY well but even when tightened up the crocodile cips were able to turn a bit as it didn’t feel completely sturdy.
I’d love to have given this 4.5 stars out of 5 but as half a star isn’t possible, it’s got 4.
Purchased to use while model making, although it has also been used extensively for electronic repairs/soldering. The base is weighted and solid, so no worries about it toppling over while working. The arms are multi-positional and have a large range of movement, and the magnifier is brilliant for close up work such as painting pilots from 1:72 scale model kits. As mentioned, I have used when soldering. This is particularly handy as often you need “two pairs of hands”- keeps everything still so delicate jobs can be done.
Great price and very useful- highly recommended.
I got this to hold small pieces whilst I soldered and fixed them. It is a lot safer than trying to hold the item, and it does do the job for what it was intended. The 2 clips are strong enough to hold the item, they can be swivelled and turned so that you get a wide range of movement. The magnifying lens is good, helps with the close work. The stand has a good weight to it and as long as you do not put anything too heavy to hold, will not tip over.
I did find that the magnifier got in my way at times, but the worst part was trying to get the arms in the right place when fixing 2 complex items. It took me a good 15-20 minutes to get the right position. For standard fixings, it should be easy, but when you are trying to align multiple points, it is time consuming.
Small enough to store, I can see it proving useful in the long run.
I haven’t made any use of the magnifying glass, as I prefer to use some cheap reading glasses instead.
The Clips will only hold fairly narrow objects, which is made worse if you need to protect against the jagged edges.
What I do like is the wieght of the unit, wich keeps it very stable. For me the height is also useful compared with smaller clamps as I am a tall person.
In no way will this suit all you clamping needs, but I do think it is worth its price.
This is an ingenious product, sufficiently well made for its purpose, with a reasonably good magnifying glass (not the cheap plastic lenses you sometimes find, which distort the image badly).
Trying to use it with it assembled as supplied and as illustrated, I found it difficult to get the clips close enough together to hold a small workpiece centrally in the field of view of the glass. Also, it was difficult to set the workpiece far enough away from the glass to get the benefit of maximum magnification.
One way round this is to take the assembly to pieces and mount the bar vertically on the stand with the glass mounted at the top. The two ring mounts can be arranged about 2/3 of the way down the bar, and the clips then mounted from these. Do this so that most of the assembly hangs over the U shaped side of the base, but with the glass and clips hanging over the other side, for best stability. Sorry I can’t add a photo of this!
Hope this helps.
The older one gets the less we worry about what people think of us and the more we want to be able to do what we want in a way of working that suits us. This product is an invaluable third hand, and with the addition of a magnifying glass even the smallest detail of ones work can be seen easily. Brilliant for modeling and electronics assembly. My primary use is with ‘N’ gauge railways and for the small detailed work that requires, this is invaluable. Very stable and well worth the price. If there is a down-side the magnifying glass could be larger by 2cm.
