Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint
Rust-Oleum’s History
Solving challenges is the very foundation of who we are. After all, in the beginning, our founder, sea captain Robert Fergusson, didn’t particularly care about paint. He just wanted to keep his ship intact. That’s why, when he noticed that an accidental splash of fish oil had stopped the relentless spread of corrosion on his rusty metal deck, he immediately recognized it for what it was: A valuable solution. Welcome to Rust-Oleum, home of trusted quality—and powerful solutions—since 1921.
- If you’ve got a surface you need to protect or a look you want to transform, you’ve come to the right place. We have a coating for every challenge.

The paint is extremely easy to work with. Covers nicely, dries quickly, but smells very badly. I didn’t smell its scent during the application, but a bit later the smell became so strong that my son couldn’t sleep in his room for 3 nights.
It’s still a very good product and I do recommend it, just keep in mind the need of a good ventilation during and long after the application.
Painted my white kitchen tiles with this paint and it needed two coats. Plenty of paint in there and a little goes a long way. Once it dries after 24 hours it was rock solid and I’m really happy.
Bought this to make a chalk wall and bring to life an old staircase. It was a little bit runnier than I thought it would be, hence a couple of initial spills when applying, but it had good coverage and dried really quickly. Great value for money, still have about half a tin left, and that’s after applying two coats.
We now have a wall for my little boys doodles, to put our weekly reminders and for our guests to leave us messages. All in all, I’m happy with this!
Great paint to use – needs a couple of coats but at room temperature, you get very good opaque coverage – ensure the paint is stirred well before use.
Used it on plywood and even on smooth melamine finishes. One thing to note is that on melamine finishes, do 2 to 3 coats but ensure on your last coat you brush the wood diagonally so the brushstrokes are diagonal. The reason is, I’ve noticed that if you try to chalk with a chalk stick in line with the brushstrokes, the chalk doesn’t stick well at all. It however does stick when chalking at 90 degrees to the brushstrokes as the strokes provide the mini-ridges and the friction to allow the chalk to stick and be more ‘white’ (if white chalk). This is because of the glossy/smooth finish of the wood – not the fault of the paint. Also bear this in mind if painting smooth plastic sheets too (acrylic etc).
So by painting the wood diagonally on the last coat, you’ve got diagonal brush-strokes meaning that with general chalking (letters/writing) you’ll get friction via both axis and a better result with the chalk.
On plywood and more rough wood finishes it wasn’t a problem at all – brushstrokes didn’t matter at all especially with just 2 coats as the wood’s roughness was still present and hence the chalk stuck no matter what.
And I don’t think it’ll be an issue if you use a foam roller as the dimples in the paint should provide the friction (in theory). I’m old school and prefer brushing as it wastes less paint and it’s always a cleaner job.
I don’t think it’s much of an issue with these chalk pens – it’s moreso with sticks of normal chalk.
Great paint otherwise! The material will dictate the method but friction/roughness is needed for chalk to stick – that’s the moral of the story!
For durability/longevity I can’t say anything yet but after several months on a few planks of wood, the paint is still solid after a lot of chalking and wiping. Looking good! Truth be told, you’re likely to drop one coat on top to refresh the surface once in a while anyway. Main thing is the paint doesn’t chip/come off once fully dried/cured.
I used this product to convert a old mirror I to a large chalkboard. By removing the mirror from the frame and using the old back board and painting with this product.
Used this product summer 2021 so it’s been a year since, I painted it on plywood for the purpose of attaching to a wall. I followed the instructions an gave it multiple coats and it has lasted extremely well, I’ve had no chipping or cracking an it has been outside constantly for the past year in all sorts of weathe
This clack paint goes on very smooth as it’s very runny, because if this I didn’t think I’d get good coverage but it was overall very good however if you do have slightly textured walls it will need at least 2 coats. It looks like a new blackboard you used to get in school.
This paint is very watery so expect it to drip all over the place unless you’re an expert painter! Despite this, two coats of the stuff seemed to do the trick easily. It’s not thin, just watery.
This paint has been used on a white wall, it took two coats and goes on very well. The only issue is the smell it leaves, it’s a bit like a very bad damp smell, not your typical paint smell, I’m hoping it clears soon.
It can cover up to 8 to 10 square metres and one coating would be enough by the I did double coated but later I noticed there was no need, I used MDF boards for great result. I my kids are so and so do I because all together for 3 boards size 2.5X1.25metres cost me 27.50 and They are really good quality boards. Thanks
Great paint, covered some very old kitchen cabinets that are in our garage gym. Now we have a chalkboard AND storage! Goes on really nicely, dries quickly too. Did two coats and it’s a very satisfying deep matt black finish. Very impressed.
Two coats on a sanded and prepped cupboard door and it’s bullet proof! Two months on after lots of abuse from a 3 & 5 year old and I’m amazed every time I wet wipe it clean that it looks as fresh as the day the second coat dried. Well done Rust-Oleum!
This product is fab, it’s very thick and goes on well, it’s a bit like painting with gloss but less sticky, you apply with a brush and will need at least 2 coats, make sure you wait until completely dry before touching or wiping at it as it will mark if you dont,as I found out and I had to put another coat on. I painted a 12ft wall and a chalkboard on my sons door so it does cover a lot more than you expect from the tin size
This product is amazing, I wish all paint worked as well as this. No drips, No mess, No see through gaps (even though I only used one coat) I didn’t bother with a primer either. It dried quickly and within an hour my boys And myself where writing on it with the chalk pens I also brought.
Thought i needed the big tin – but painted two chalkboards, two coats each and had used barely a 1/5 of the tin. Great coverage, but probably only need the smaller size
I found a big piece of old wood in the garage. I gave this piece of wood three coats of this paint and wall mounted it and I have a huge 5ft by 5ft blackboard. I still have a third of the paint left too. The paint went on easily and quickly. The brush was washed in water afterwards. There was no paint smell. Hopefully this blackboard paint will be durable. Time will tell if this is the case
Does what it says on the tin. We put 3 coats on just to make sure it wasn’t able to show any of the paint behind it but 2 would have been enough. The stuff is great, not really much of a smell either. Seems to last as well, I was able to do 2 large sections and still have half a ton lef
This is fab stuff! For the size of the tin I thought you didn’t get a lot, but you don’t need a lot to get the job done! Just don’t do what I did and go straight in painting it on, make sure you put sheets or something down as it drips like crazy and once it’s on the carpet that’s it!
We bought this to paint one of the wall in the house which we wanted to turn to chalkboard. We love having friends and family over and this was way to remember the good time we had with them as they would write stuff etc. We painted it ourself and it turned out to be really amazing looking wall with friends and family pouring complements!!!!
We still have the new year’s wishes written by our friends, don’t feel like rubbing it off !!! Giving it one star less as not sure how to you clean it as it is never rubbed off completely.
Heya friends,
I have a hot tip. You only need 1.5 coats of the paint, f you use gray primer first. I basically have Martha Stewart as a sister and she saw my wall after I put on white primer and she scolded me. I reprimed with gray primer and low and behold my first coat was perfect minus a few spots I missed. I went back over them the next morning with the paint left on my roller and my wall is perfect. There’s not a need for more than one coat and you can save the left overs for future touch ups. I hope this saves some of you from falling into the many coats trap In some of the reviews. This paint is more expensive than the gray primer so I suggest one coat of primer first. Apparently, this is true for all dark paint. Who knew!
I am very imprssed so far. I got one can to paint a large (about 2.5 by 1.0 meters) piece of plywood to make a blackboard of. I used up about 3/4 of the can, and it was enough for 2 coats. I applied the 2 coats 30 min apart. The pain is very thick, it felt very satisfying to apply. There was very little smell, which was a major positive, too. I liked that it’s water soluble, but once it cures it becoms water resistnat. I wiped the board with a wet sponge, and no paint residue was left on the sponge.
If you have left marks on the floor, make sure to wipe them ASAP, b.c. once this paint cures, it only can be sraped off, it gets a plasticky texture upon curing. ALcohol and water did not remove it from the floor, and I did not dare try more harsh solvents, as they would ruin the floor as well.
Ok, so I bought this paint and asked the question will it cover a cream wall and the awnser is YES- now I am a pure novis when it comes to painting and so iv done 99 percent of my wall to show you and to test if the other reviews were right, and they are, this little tin goes a long way, Iv used half a tin so far, a whole tin will do the job. It goes on nice with a brush and drys really quick, it drips a bit but I think that’s my fault not the paints. Would I recommend this paint, yes I would
I don’t usually bother with reviews, but I had to on this one. Bought this chalkboard paint to use on a piano, I didn’t expect much because I wasnt sure how the paint would stick to the piano’s veneered surface, but it was absolutely amazing! Lightly sanded the piano (mainly for cleaning more than anything else) and then skipped the primer and added two coats of this paint. The results are amazing and I’m so impressed. Now I have half a can left and want to paint my entire house with it! It goes on super smoothly and a little goes a long way. Can’t recommend highly enough 🙂
Very happy with this. Painted over supposed chalkboard pen that wouldn’t come off, and has left a nice smooth finish. We’ve used the board with chalk numerous times since and when wiping, there is no residue from the paint so it’s done the job perfectly. The only issue is that the lid doesn’t come off easily and as such, it then doesn’t go back on properly. So once opened, it would be hard to transport as the lid just won’t go back on fully.
This stuff is amazing. I bought this for a cupboard door. It took two coats but now looks amazing and is ready to be drawn on and lists written. The pot is the size you’d expect but this paint goes a long way! I have painted a slightly bigger than normal door sized space and I have two thirds of a pot left!! Guess I’ll have to find something else in the house to turn into a blackboard
Excellent product. Had a quote from a builder to create a blackboard on our office wall with paint and believe you me it was about fifty times the cost of this pot of paint. Easy to put on, just grab a paint brush and paint it on. Works a treat as an an on-wall blackboard. We use it in our office to welcome people and highlight anything specific going on that day. If it starts to wear out, you just paint on another coat.
When this first arrived I was surprised at how small the can was – but a little really does go a long way! I’ve covered nearly an entire wall with two coats and it’s only gone down by about 2cm so there’s loads left! It dried very quickly and looks great. So easy and quick to do I wish I’d just done this straight away (Had previously tried to use one of those stick-on adhesive black boards…. That was a waste of money and time). I’d recommend using a brush and only dipping it in by a very small amount or it can splash everywhere, and once doing it that way it becomes super easy to put on the wall. Highly recommended.
