My XPS laptop had finally died after 7 and a half years, this Sabrent M.2 SSD was the perfect solution, I removed the hard drive from the laptop and popped it in the enclosure, plugged it into my desktop and hey presto, I was back in business.
Bought this enclosure so I could quickly clone my operating system boot drive to a new M.2 SSD.
This a high quality enclosure with a quick release button to open it up and fit a new drive with ease. No screws needed at all. It has a thermal pad and the entire metal case acts as a heat sink for cooling.
No issues at all and performance is excellent. Highly recommend, far better than the cheaper unbranded alternatives.
Nifty piece of kit, bit more pricey than others but well worth the extra spend. flips open with a press on the button, easy to invert drive, solid alloy case to keep cool, would defo buy another.
I tried this with an older 970 evo, and a random sata m.2 drive I had laying around. No issues with either.
easy enough to install press button, open and slot in.
possible problems I see in it’s future though are the reason for the 4 stars.
the retention swivel inside is a bit stiff and feels like it may break on me, probably after 100 or so changes.
the button release for the case also gives that feeling of I’m going to break on you one day, this I think will just be a stressed peice of plastic that ponders it’s life choices and why it was chosen for such a task.
they haven’t broken yet but those are the area’s I suspect this will have a problem in it’s lifespan.
Had some issues at first, and I had initiated a return.
But, it looks like the issue may have been that it wasn’t getting enough power from my USB port on the computer. Since its been fairly solid and I cancelled the return.
Slim, minimalist, function with form to match.
So much more useful than USB drives and so much faster too.
Great way to reuse older M2 NVME’s too where I’ve swapped out smaller or slower M2’s for bigger and faster Sabrent Rocket drives for PCIe5.0 in the PC.
On Windows 11 and connected to an Asus Proart Z690 WiFi motherboard I get read and write throughout of 1Gbps. Very impressive. Also, the device is discovered at boot when connected to a Thunderbolt 4 port, which was not the case for the Icybox enclosure I used previously. Finally, temps with consistent use hover around 35 Celsius. I had to put an additional 0.5mm thick heat transmission stick between my Samsung 970 nvme and the enclosure to ensure proper heat conductivity. Awesome enclosure. I love it.
Bought this to try and make sure I didn’t have a dodgy drive that was misbehaving in a laptop, proved useful for cloning windows to restore quickly as well. Ran at full speed with no hiccups.
I’m using this adapter so I can keep using an older NVMe drive (PM981a – basically a 970 Evo) without having to use PCIe resources to do so. Speeds are good for a USB attached drive in my experience – sequentials a little higher than the X1 slot it was in before, randoms a lot lower -though bear in mind this is attached to a port on my motherboard and using a front panel connector cuts them quite badly. Only complaint really is that the thermal pad for the drive could be a bit thicker and softer, and the RTL9210B controller chip hidden on the back of the PCB should probably have some cooling too, but this drive isn’t going to be used too heavily so it’s not really an issue.
I purchased this enclosure with the intention of creating an external hard drive, and I must say it is impressively well-built and user-friendly. However, I have noticed that the included cable may not deliver optimal speed performance. To fully unleash its potential, I highly recommend investing in a dedicated cable of higher quality. It’s worth noting that a superior cable might come at a higher cost, but that shouldn’t be held against the enclosure itself, as it exceeds expectations in every other aspect.
Very impressed with the quality of construction. Good solid feel. Love the single push button to unlock. Love the hinged cover. Really well made and built to last. Easy to fit and remove NVMe drives. Great performance too. Highly recommended.
Bought two of these, and they both work like a charm. It feels like it is high quality, while remaining light. Perfect for traveling, just make sure you have a suitable place to store them, they are not waterproof.
If you’re upgrading your older PC to something new, then you should consider buying one of these M.2/PCIe/NVMe and SATA SSD enclosures. Simply install your new storage stick into the enclosure and use Sabrent’s excellent tools to migrate your data to it. Then you can either install the stick into your new system or just attach the entire enclosure with the included USB Type-C to Type-C cable. Another great option is to use the enclosure for your Steam Library! This will let you free space on your system and still allow you to access your games from anywhere. The enclosure is seriously well made, with a decent weight (not too light, nor too heavy!). Robust and easy to use. The instructions are so simple, even I managed to use it!
Very easy to get going with this, I am using it to recover files from a failed laptop where the NVME drive is still good. Will then use the Sabrent to house the old NVME and use it as a backup storage drive. The drive worked first Time with no problems. Would be 5 stars for all categories but the drive cable is very short and I would have preferred a slightly longer cable to make positioning the drive on my desk a little easier.
Its a well constructed case, and very easy to install and use – takes seconds.
I paired mine with a WD SN750 2TB drive which is capable of 3.5kMB/s. I was subsequently disappointed with the actual read/write rate via the case, averaging at 800MB/s. I tested this via USB 3 ports on both Mac and PC, and got roughly the same speeds.
It’s cheap and functional, so I suppose one shouldn’t complain. If you are looking for speeds your NVME SSD is capable of though, you’ll need to spend significantly more on an enclosure!
Performs as advertised. Fast. Has been the backing store for my server Mac Mini for a while now and the speeds from my (also Sabrent) SSDs has been fantastic.
But the installation was harder than it needed to be because of the hinged design of the sockets and the thermal pads (which I ended up just not using). And worst of all, it has a power button; when the power goes out, its default state is OFF, making it useless without a battery backup for your Mac server that resumes after unplanned poweroff. Most unfortunate!
So yeah. A really great product, but if these faults could be remedied, it would get a perfect score.
This cloning station did not work at all, bad copy I got. I was really disappointed as I had read many good reviews about it. Maybe it was a button issue, can’t tell, but button is too small and seems weak. I am hesitant to get another and I think I will buy different brand. Refund went smoothly, but I had to pay more for the return shipping.
The Sabrent enclosure feels like a quality product and works very well, it has a nice reassuring weight to it too. I’m very impressed.
Inserting my Western Digital Black SN770 SSD was a little challenging but eventually went in. My main concern was heat, this is a warmer drive but even under load the aluminium casing with the built in thermal pad dissipates the heat and keeps the drive cool.
I’m using the SSD to run Windows 11 Pro and Game Pass plugged into a dock, alternatively it can be directly plugged into the Steam Deck and that works great too. Recommend.
So far the enclosure works great. Testing with one NVMe I’m getting 200MBps (but that could be the drive – awaiting new drive arriving in a few days so I will edit when that arrives).
The considerable downside is that the Enclosure uses a standard Thunderbolt (USB-C) socket but with a non standard shaped rubber. To use my other Thunderbolt 3 and 4 cables I had to take a scalpel and shave an angle down the edges of the rubber to get them to fit into the socket.
I shouldn’t have to do that but it seems to work and the cable also still fits my other drives without issue.
This caddy sports the RTL9210B chipset which had a dual USB-PCIe & USB-SATA interface (very handy).
I’ve only tested briefly with a WD SN550 drive (NVMe) and it works to a satisfactory performance level, doesn’t produce any significant heat, the SSD can be installed completely without tools.
Most importantly this caddy is stable while in operation. The integrity of data is more important than speed. I had another NVMe caddy from Orico which crashed spectacularly while in operation.
As for speeds the SSD I tried normally runs at speeds close to 3.4GB/s read, 1.9GB/s write while mounted directly into the computer. So the caddy takes away some of that performance in my case (might work faster with other systems, I don’t know).
Works well with Linux, which is also specified on the box/manual. Overall very happy with the purchase.
Great this replaced a (cheap) simmilar itemfrom another brand that blewup my SSD!
This one does not and seems much better made, with a far better heat transfer (gets warm but ot red hot)
Compatability with windows is fine
Speed (dependand upon the car you choose to insert) but pass through does seem quick.
Well made, east to fit securly your card (takes two sizes)
Would reccomend
I wanted to give 5 star review but the problem for me is how you insert the M.2 storage on this thing. It’s not easy and I honestly don’t understand why they have to make it this hard. Why is there no way to create a way which will be like when you put batteries on your remote control? I almost broke my M.2 removing it from this enclosure. I recommend it but I also recommend the user to be careful how to install their M.2s because you can very easy break the pins.
The quality seems fine and the WD sn850 that I bought fits in this nicely.
Just a heads up though that I bought this so I could update FW on my drive and enable “game mode”. But this device hides the physical aspect of the drive behind Sabrent firmware so your WD dashboard won’t find it.
In the end I was able to achieve my aims as follows so in that respect I’ve increased my review score to reflect the job completed, bit it wasn’t as straightforward as it should have been.
Repeating steps here hoping to help other buyers:
0) WD Dashboard software cannot see the drive. Established that WD SN850 drive visible to Windows and can be formatted so caddy is physically working.
Read up some more and find others with same issue on this and most other caddies.
1) Opened laptop (check I have m2 NVmE compatible laptop)
2) marvelled at the swollen battery in my laptop. Count myself lucky for finding it.
3) took NVmE drive out of laptop and put new WD SN850 drive into laptop slot
4) put laptop drive into this SABRENT caddy
5) set BIOS on laptop to unsecure boot mode, select SABRENT as boot device
6) booted to external device… Laptop won’t boot…goes back to BIOS
7a – e) cursed for about 5 hours while I tried various things to get my laptop drive in the caddy to work. It refused..booting back into BIOS and alternating between that and then offering to do windows diagnostics/safe mode. Diagnostics didnt work. Lots of different permutations of insecure, CMS, secure, etc. but still refusing to boot from drive in the external SABRENT caddy.
8) in the end went into windows “safe mode with networking support”
9) cheered when WD Dashboard opened and found device
10) cursed some more when WD Dashboard wouldn’t find updated FW..no network
11) I found I needed a hardwired Networking cable because WiFi disabled in safe mode (networking support in safe mode doesn’t extend to WiFi)
12) remembered I had usb dongle with CAT5 network connection.
13) connected…updated FW on the now internal WD drive, se to GAME mode. Celebrate Win with a cup of tea
14) shutdown and switch original laptop drive back again
15) install new drive in PS5. Done
Straight away, I could tell this is a superior product. The fit and finish is excellent. The quality of the materials is evident in the smoothness of the edges, the reassuring weight of the enclosure and the secure fitting of the cover. It was very easy to install my Western Digital SN750 NVME SSD. The instructions are simple and the SSD is held in place securely. I was worried by other reviews that said the cable had indents one of the plugs. I am happy to tell you the good news that Sabrent have obviously listened to these complaints because the one I received has no notches or bumps and uses a standard thunderbolt 3 cable. I haven’t bothered with benchmarking because it seems just as fast in practice as my previous enclosure BUT this one does not randomly disconnect when I am writing or copying to the SSD. No more annoying error notifications nor crashed applications. This enclosure has a rock solid connection that does not disconnect at all!
This is why I bought Sabrent and why the other, unreliable enclosure will probably go to recycling.
I’ll keep this short with the pertinent facts.
THE GOOD STUFF
1. The quality of this enclosure is amazing and beautifully engineered.
2. It is Thunderbolt 3 which of course makes it far more expensive, exotic and of course very very fast.
3. You won’t be disappointed with the performance if you mate it with a high speed NVMe SSD drive.
4. It is truly tool free but give the instructions a read first – they are very helpful.
5. It is good value compare to other enclosures.
THE BAD STUFF
1. Out of pure madness Sabrent have decided to make the USB Thunderbolt 3 port proprietary. There are two notches in it which means only their cable will fit and at the time of writing you cannot buy a spare.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE PORT AND CABLE
I’ve already modified a Thunderbolt 3 cable to fit Sabrent’s port so this can be easily done. It’s two small 1 x 2mm notches that need to be made which of course would invalidate any cable warranty – your choice.
Sabrent’s M.2 enclosure is perfect for making use of an old M.2 SATA drive as a fast USB 3.0 drive, but it’s also very useful if you are thinking of moving from a hard drive or smaller SSD to a new M.2 card in a laptop or PC.
The enclosure looks good in black aluminium and is really easy to assemble. The pack comes with the drive, USB 3.0 lead, screws and riser for the M.2 card and a handy screwdriver, along with basic instructions.
To install the M.2 you just need to undo the two screws at the front, slide the inside out, grab the M.2 and the riser and screw to screw it in place on the card, slide the card back in and do the screws up. It took about 6 minutes but only because the screw for the M.2 is incredibly small (as they always are).
My reason for buying this drive was to install a 500GB M.2 SATA drive in my ASUS laptop, in place of the current boot drive, a 128GB M.2). I installed this drive, used the Windows Disk Management to format it with one partition, used the free EaseUS Partition Master Free software to clone Windows and the recovery sector, then move the recovery sector around so I could re partition the Windows partition to make it larger.
The enclosure works really fast on USB 3.0 but it still manages to work fast enough to be useful on USB 2.0 ports as well, so if you only have USB 2.0 then this can still be used. The only other thing to note is that M.2 drives can get pretty hot in use and this being metal, it can obviously heat up a bit, so worth bearing in mind.
I ordered this housing because it was actually one of the cheapest available. The item is well packaged and the actual circuit board seems well designed and made. The metal housing seems like it will be very robust.
It will fit a variety of length M.2 boards and you can secure them with a small riser at the end. My M.2 board fitted perfectly and using the riser and screw ensured it wouldn’t come loose during use.
You do get spare screws and risers too which is a nice touch.
You also get a small screwdriver included in the box so you have everything you need to install your M.2 device.
The USB cable is also included.
The instructions are clear and concise with enough text and pictures to get you up and running without issues.
One small note, my board (which houses the M.2 drive) seems a little loose within the metal housing so you do get a slight rattle when fully installed. This is the same even when the cap is fully screwed into place. It is a left to right movement rather then a length movement.
This can be resolved with a bit of paper I expect.
The speed seems very good and I have managed to back up the contents of the drive via the USB and even burn a CD straight from the drive at 10x speed with no issues.
There is a light on the unit to show you when it is accessible and also when the data is transferring.
Fully plug and play on windows 7 and 10 and no drivers were required.
I certainly recommend this housing! Good company!
