I’ve used loads of colour removers before – frustrating if you only have a patch you need to lighten or something . This is great because it comes with 3 applications separated out. I accidentally left my root touch up too long and brown went black . This was perfect ! One application – 5 mins on the head and colour faded back to brown perfectly. It really stinks , but they all do . Great produc
I have done this twice, a week apart. My hair was black with a lot of colour build up after dying it a lot at home. As you can see there is a massive difference now and it’s much lighter . Its a bit fiddly as there are a few stages of putting things on and rinsing off but if that’s what needs to be done to achieve the look then so be it. People say it leaves an odour on your hair which is true but again it’s worth it for the results and is only temporary . The instructions must be followed properly.
I used this nearly one week ago to remove permanent black dye, which was “supposed to” be a kind of indigo colour, but my hair went black. I liked the black at first, but then it made me feel depressed. This product removed all of the black/indigo/navy blue dye and my hair has just about reverted back to its original colour. The product does smell very strongly of hydrogen sulfide! (“rotting eggs” smell) but it did a very good job.
After stupidly dying my hair ginger and hating it, I dyed it dark red , see pic. Hated it, after reading all the reviews on this I was optimistic, followed the instructions left on hair for 50 mins and wow! Back to blonde, no orange tones and no need to use toner, smell is strong but I’d rather the smell than the red hair, I’ll never go red again , red to blonde in one sitting
I mistakenly dyed my hair with a dark copper dye (my base was lighter copper) and it went absolutely dark brown (!!) I hated to look at myself in the mirror with that dark colour because it just doesn’t suit me. I read lots of reviews full of people moaning about this and that but still stuck to the positive ones. Guys: don’t expect a miracle. Know your hair background, the colours you been using etc. don’t expect it to do a miracle on you because it won’t. I dyed my hair light copper for YEARS (minimum 10) so I believe this made everything “easier”. My hair is thin, straight and despite all that, it still feels soft and shiny. The smell now: ok. It doesn’t smell pleasant BUT it is not as bad as people say at all. Do it next to a open window if you’re too sensitive to strong smell but honestly this is absolutely bearable!
I give it 5 stars because it worked perfectly for me. I’m so so happy! Very high quality, very well explained and clear step by step instructions. Cant fault it.
I have white hair and used semi permanent during the winter. I grew out my permanent colour during covid. Been using purple shampoo but hair looked patchy.
This product has removed all colour and looks great. Feels amazing too. I left on for 25 mins and found the whole system easy to use. Be warned though it smells awful and I guess a few more washes before this has gone.
Product is ok, didn’t do much for my hair cuz i’ve been coloring my hair black for years.
Smell isn’t as bad as other brands, kind of a citrus-boiled egg
If you are careful enough, your hair will not tangle.
Little brassy after treatment and the smell remain in you hair for 5-6 washes
I got this to remove black box dye, my hair has been dyed black the past 4 years and I knew it would be no easy task to remove I tried a different colour remover and it did barely anything this product has removed so much colour but it’s still a work in progress as I knew it would be. As for the smell people are complaining about in other comments It does have a slight smell but compared to other colour removers it’s not the worst smell
This stuff is cheap and kind of worked for me. I was really afraid it would turn my hair orange or wouldn’t worse – wouldn’t work at all as I dyed my hair with black box dye for years. Instead it just took 0.5 a tone away, leaving me with dark brown hair. This is exactly the colour I would have gone for.
I also really loved the clarifying shampoo and the balm, which was really nice and made my hair shiny.
There is one big minus though – the smell.
I instantly hated the smell as soon as opened the activator and the other tube. The smell is horrible and stayed even after first wash. I had to wash my hair next day to get rid of it and it finally went away.
1 star off for the smell.
Thw picture is before and after.
I was a bit trepidatious about using this but had to try something as I needed to remove the dark purple colour I had put on my dark blonde with grey hair. I had also built up quite a few layers of other colours underneath. It’s not difficult to use but it is a bit of a faff. (To be fair that is probably true of colour removers in general!) It recommends reading the instructions twice before you start and I would definitely echo that. The main stuff is a bit smelly but not at all unbearable (and I am very sensitive to smells) but the other lotions and potions smell quite pleasant. One thing that was surprising was that when I washed off the colour remover part I expected the water to run quite murky but it was totally clear. Slight panic at that point in case it hadn’t worked! When the moment of truth arrived at the end of the process I was actually amazed – there was no sign of the purple or other colours left in my hair. It was totally back to normal, albeit an awful lot greyer than I remembered!
This wasn’t as expensive as some of the colour removers but it seems to have worked really well and the smell isn’t too bad. I would definitely buy it again.
Firstly. Surprised at some reviews re ‘difficulty to use ‘. 2 bottles, both gloopy gel, came out easily…I used a bowl…no odour. Pre wash, good.
My hair is mid length, thick, 50% grey, coloured blond/plus highlights at a salon twice a year. I touch up the roots in between with 8.5 blonde. Couldn’t get it, bought a 7.5 dark blonde which came out dark brown! I washed it with baking soda & head & shoulders mixed, & left it for 20 mins. It lightens a little.
This product removed about 30% of the colour. I only used 2thirds of the product as I could get anymore in my hair. Left it for 25 mins, probably if I left it for 40+ mine more colour would have come out.
Post wash left my hair soft but didn’t like the smell….very strange, so washed again & used a deep conditioner.
I used permanent red hair dye on my dark brown wavy hair and whilst it was great at the time, removing it is no mean feat.
My hair has always had naturally warm tones since I was a teenager and I’ll never have a “cool” brown tone.
I wanted to revert back to my usual colour again but the red was proving to be as stubborn as heck.
I wasn’t expecting much from a box of three applications for 2.99. I only used two sachets for my fine but ample long hair.
Oh the smell of sulphur lasted well after the third rinse a whole week later!
It’s very important to deeply condition your hair after this unless you like the straw feel. I use a plastic shower cap with a microfibre turban over it to seal in the heat overnight and this greatly improves the moisture lost during treatment.
I love the Garnier Banana mask for this and everyday smoothing.
This Colour Removal product made a visible difference in the reduction of coppery red tones in my hair.
It also revealed how much I’d lightened my hair with permanent box dyes.
I dyed my hair again after several weeks using Aussie Blue shampoo and conditioner which helped overall.
I also used a Hair Detox shampoo to remove product build up which was as drying as this stuff.
I think it’s worth it though to get a cleaner base for future colour otherwise you can end up with a patchwork of old colours through your hair.
I have used this product four times over the past few years to remove dark brown build up from long hair and for this is works very well. It does not damage your hair and the colour disappears. When you wash it out it is completely clear so no idea where it goes!
You must follow the instructions to the letter. The last time I used it, it was less effective (purchased from Amazon) so I tried again (purchased elsewhere) and it worked so not sure if the Amazon stock is old perhaps?
Anyway, as other reviewers have stated the smell is terrible but having just had a bout of COVID, it was an issue for everyone else but not me!
Make sure you select the correct one for what you are trying to do as there are two varieties. Also, if you have used a colour that has changed your natural hair, it won’t remedy that. It will only remove the colour so you might end up a shade that is not exactly what you expect.
I like that this product didn’t have that horrible smell that comes with other colour removal products..the price was good and overall the colour removal from a copper colour was very good .
The down side was the product is so dense and difficult to mix well that its hard to get the mixture from the bottle as it gets stuck. With the product being so thick it doesn’t go very far and I would have needed two ideally. I doubted the colour would be removed but I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. The one thing I really didn’t like was that my hair was like straw and brittle and I found it difficult to put a comb through it and the ends were damaged . Overall score out of ten would be a seven ..
My hair had a build up of colour which looked really really dark brown even though a semi permanent number 6 (dark blonde) had only ever been used on it (see picture 1). I then used this treatment. The smell is unbelievably disgusting but I could overlook that because it didn’t irritate my scalp at all, didn’t feel harsh on the hair, and actually worked (although I did have to use it twice). It did leave my hair a gingery colour (picture 2) which I didn’t like but it says to expect this. I left it a week before getting my hairdresser to dye it again, as per instructions, with a semi number 6 (dark blonde). And it went … black (third picture) and looked worse than in the start. However I did a couple of vitamin c treatments and washed it a lot and after a couple of weeks it’s now a nice mid brown again (last picture) which is what I wanted. I spoke to a different hairdresser about this afterwards and he says whenever he uses these types of products when he dyes the hair again afterwards he goes TWO shades lighter than he usually would to get the same effect. So had I used an 8 not 6 it might have been better. Anyway, overall, it really does work on getting rid of colour build up and I’d definitely use it again if I needed to.
After reading all the horrendous reviews I was slightly scared to use this product, however I was pleasantly surprised. I had previously bleached hair with some natural root showing all over. I then dyed it a cool brown as my hair was in bad condition with years of bleaching. However the brown had gone warm and was showing yellow and orange tones so I decided to strip it as I wasn’t happy with it. So the colour remover did what it said it would. It stripped the brown colour out of my hair and left me with very yellow blonde hair. My roots were darker but not quite their natural colour – likely having been lightened by the brown dye I had put on. So all in all the product did what it was supposed to. I was prepared for my hair to be yellow. I was just glad it wasn’t bright orange! I followed up with the Scott Cornwall colour restorer in Ash and am very pleased with the result.
I had a bad home diy balayage that was growing out (picture with the red jumper) and I’ve had a hard time matching my root colour with different 4.0 colours, even from the same brand name. They all came out as different shades of brown with hot roots galore so I decided to go for a darker colour to blend it all out.
It was 3.0 supposedly semi permanent but it was soo dark it was almost black and far too dark for my skin. It did blend out most of the colour issues though.
So I decided to use this colour remover. I followed the instructions and left it on for an hour under a shower cap with a towel wrapped over it to keep it warm. I then did the treatment in the same way for half an hour.
My hair is lighter, but not as light as I would like so I am considering doing it again with a heat hood and my hairdryer.
The greys are somehow not very noticeable and the permanent root touch up that I have been using most months for over a year seems to have come out and my hair is redder at the roots.
The mask really improved the condition of my hair but it has straightened out my curl pattern. It was 2C/ 3a but now seems to be 2a/b.
If you are wanting to strip our colour you can expect it to take out some but I haven’t had anything like the results promised by the marketing. Which is probably a good thing as it put me off using it for fear of looking like a banchee!
All in all it has helped and not damaged my hair (improved it) and it’s an awful lot cheaper than the hairdresser – she wants 100 for colour removal on top of the cost of colouring it.
The smell is bearable but the worst thing is you can’t colour it for a week after using the colour remover, except for certain temporary dyes (a standard semi permanent is no good).
My hair is naturally ginger and I’d tried so dye it by mixing 2 other ginger colours to go all ready for autumn with the end result being a warmm, deep rich red.
It didn’t happen.
I ordered 2 of these hair strippers, which were delivered the next day and got to work.
My hair is just below my shoulders so I ordered 2, incase I needed extra. I didn’t.
In terms of the smell, it’s absolutely fine. It wasn’t by any means unbearable.
Instructions were easy enough to follow.
I wrapped my hair in the clingfilm as required and again in a towel to keep in the heat to help break down the dye particles. I left it on for the required time and when I took off the towel and cling film….my hair was orange.
By orange, I don’t mean, back to my natural hair, it was almost luminous. As if I had put bleach on my hair and it had turned an orange/yellow colour. The dye had definitely stripped the dye out, but it had also lightened it.
The condition on my hair after was fine, wasn’t brittle or dry.
I left it for 2 days to see if I would live with it, but unfortunately, it was too bright. The box did say to leave it for 3 washes or 7 days before dying it again, but I couldn’t leave it the way it was.
Would I use it again???
Ermmm, if I couldn’t get to the shops or brave enough to physically go into a high street shop to buy hair b4 or similar, then yes, I would order this product again, perhaps I could have washed it off earlier, either way, does this strip your hair, yes. Do you need to have another box of dye ready to tone it down after??? Yes!
Ok… so I think my hair may have ptsd….
This stuff works… so thats one bonus…. but…
You have to wash, rinse, towel dry, add half the “before” shampoo, rinse, towel dry, add remover, wait, rinse, towel dry, add other 50% “before” shampoo, rinse, towel dry, add “after care” conditioner… wait… rinse… dry…
(at 1am this isn’t really what you want to be doing)
Each time I rinse my hair felt rougher than a weetabix…..
Tbf though, the after care conditioner helped a lot…. but i did add my own coconut conditioner after that LOL! (I’ve literally just dried it and it does feel silky tbh)…
Oh and quite a bit of my hair fell out whilst washing….lavlyyy!
Does it smell? Yes like burning hair in a bottle …. is it as bad as colour before? And others? No not really… my eyes don’t feel like they’ve been melted so that’s a good sign right?
Would I buy it again? Hmmmmm….. yasss
Well its stripped red out …. but its a lot of effort…
But my hair feels good…. loool
Used on henna hair. (Lush henna caca rouge- no metallic salts and only one application)
Iv used this product before on normal box colour Red and it was brilliant. I know it’s not meant for henna hair but In desperation I gave it a go.
The first photo is before using the remover and the second is after. It did pull some colour out but in the light my hair is quite yellow/gold (Not in a good way) which you can’t really tell from the photo.
I’d say if you have henna on your hair don’t bother using this as it didn’t do much and my hair is super dry now! The shampoo they give you was the worst for drying out hair, the actual remover was ok.
My hair was bleach blonde under the henna not my natural colour.
Saying this, the product is absolutely not meant for removing henna so this review is more to help people thinking of trying it on henna anyway. Just don’t bother lol 🙂
If your using it for box dye it’s great!
Have been dying my hair black for a while, before that I died it chestnut brown, so I haven’t seen my natural hair color for some time (dark ash blonde). Apparently, the hair dyes I used before contained bleach in them, that’s why the colour remover didn’t reveal my natural hair colour, it turned the hair orange and brassy instead. My mid-lengths and ends were still quite dark with a brassy tint to it after one application. Might do another one and see if it lifts more of the color from the ends. Overall, it’s not a bad product for the price. And it doesn’t damage your hair at all! But I have to say you need to be realistic, the product won’t magically get your natural hair colour black, at least not for most people. You’ll probably still need to tone it/bleach it afterwards to get to the desired state, this is only the first step towards getting your natural hair back.
Also, I gave it only four stars because I bought two packs and one of them looked damaged/already open and didn’t contain the shampoo or the hair mask. I was a bit disappointed because I used up all of them for my first application and didn’t have any for the second.
EDIT: The result was exactly the same after the second application, which was a little disappointing but I probably shouldn’t have expected anything more. Still, a good product and does what it says, just have realistic expectations!
This is the 1st time I have ever used a product such as this and bought 2 bottles as I was sure I would mess up with the 1st one which I did, I uses the gloves from the beginning which was not a great idea because then my hair did not lather well but pretty much followed the rest of the instructions and it did take some off the original dye off my hair. So left it a a day then used the 2nd bottle and again it had taken a lot of the dye out of my hair but the mid and tail ends of my hair were still quite dark (yes I did ensure it was fully through the hair) so was thinking of buying another bottle but decided to get the hair trimmed was better so that it what I did so gone from shoulder length to like a bob and the hair looks good. Going to try to colour it again near the week end see how it goes.
Set your expectations correct & this could be the best product out there. I’m so pleased with my results. Yes, I had strawberry blonde hair (not my natural ashy dark blonde) after use, but I expected this result.
My hair history :-long term dyed ashy light blonde who decided to try darker shades including warm browns & reds & then finally a medium brown with copper tone over a 6- 8 month period. As per everytime I try darker hair, I got bored enough is enough. So, I ordered this. As I had previously used peroxide on my hair (which is in every permenant colour even darks) I knew I had striped my hair of its natural colour (the lightest blonde peroxide will have taken it back to white & the darker shades with less peroxide strength ginger), so this product was never going to take me back to my mid to dark blonde hair, as it’s impossible the previous bleach had removed those colour particles. But I hoped this would lift out the depth of the brown without having to put bleach on my hair. IT HAS!!!! I had a very even light copper blonde colour by the end of the process, basically hair that was previosly lightened that is now stained from the reds & browns. But it is at least 3 shades lighter. I’ve gone from a 5 (medium brown) to an 8 (dark blonde).
My hair hasn’t changed condition at all & I haven’t lost a single hair in process, which I was worried about as my hair is slightly damaged.
To get the right tone I want, as I like cool toned hair. I have added an 8.11 hair colour (super ashy) to counteract the brassy tones. My hair is an even colour & feels no worse than before. This would not be the case if I had done a bleach wash or bleached it back to a level 8.
I think this product is a miracle but you need to know a little about hair colouring to counter act what you may be left.
If it’s a one time hair disaster, & your using this I can imagine it will be fab, for me it was about removing 6 red & brown dyes on previously bleached hair which is much trickier for the product, however the results have still surpassed what I thought could happen and I would definitely use it again.
As this product has maintained my condition but moved me three shades lighter I couldn’t be happier. I would definitely recommend it but remember you might have to google how to cover the results successfully. If it’s brassy just chuck very cool tones over & stay within the achieved shade. So if you achieve a 7 (very dark blonde that’s copper ) stick a 7.11 on etc.
I wanted to dye my hair a lighter shade of blonde and having used lots of toners to counteract brassiness, I wanted to rid my hair of these ashy tones before I dyed it to avoid any green disasters.
See photo – in my before pic my hair is an ashy cool tone and after more of a baby blonde colour (this result is immediately after using this product, I’ve not dyed it yet). So as you can see this product worked well and I got the results I wanted so could go on safely to use a coloured box dye without worrying about colour reactions.
The process is quite straightforward but it is so stinky! I was prepared for this as have used similar products before, but it is still awful even when you expect it. When it’s all washed out you still smell, I was so glad I was immediately dying my hair after as this helped get rid of the smell.
**review** update – I’ve bought this again and this time used it to take permanent blue hair dye out of my daughters bleached hair and worked perfectly, photo added of before and after. She’s very happy!
I am not one to write reviews but thought I must for this. I have elbow length box dyed hair I am naturally a dark brown but for the last 5 years I have been box dyeing it with a chocolate brown but because of doing it every 8 weeks and not just doing my roots I did whole head and left me with a colour build up so hair was black. I had spoken to hairdresser about lightening it as wanted a natural brown she suggested stripping it or bleaching it. Which would be a long and expense journey plus damaging to my hair. I researched as must as I could but didn’t want to put a stripper/bleach on my hair so this is my journey. I did the vitamin c and head and shoulders treatment covered in cling film and left a hour this lifted my root area to a brown but didn’t do anything to the length. I cut a strand test from my hair and did a sample test result after 50mins and heat applied was orange. I kept a close eye on the strand test and noticed it only started to go orange in the last 5 mins. So I decided to go for it. I applied the scott Cornwall 2 box’s all over my head leaving the roots as these had already lightened wrapped in cling film with a towel wrapped round and left it 40mins. I rinsed for a full 10mins Then applied the conditioner left for 5 mins then rinsed again for 5 mins. My hair is now a medium brown colour with a slight hint of red if in the sun. My hair is in fantastic condition no damage what so ever. I had been planning to dye my hair to a brown but with the results I am very happy with it. Sorry for the length of review but there is a lot of mixed results as everyone is different this is just my experience and hope it will help someone in the future
During Corana virus lockdown I had decided to tackle the roots on my darker blonde with lighter blonde highlighted hair. (Not coloured for about two months). Half way through the process I remembered it’s not Olia Blonde that I use – it’s Olia Light Blonde. And as expected it came out a solid block of dull dark blonde. Not a million miles from my own natural colour. (And I didn’t want that!) Quickly I reordered Olia Light Blonde (price inflated by demand!) and realised I would need colour remover too.
This came in two days – thanks! I found the instructions easy to follow and it was easy to mix and apply. (I’m pretty sure I shook it for a full minute)?! Anyway I rinsed it, applied a bit more, rinsed again and used the conditioner.
I could see even when wet it was lighter. It had definitely removed all the colour from 2 days before. It had also removed some of the salon colour – so I was left with quite a bit of the bleached highlights and less of the darker applied dye to give a more natural look. But it’s fine. It’s a sort of hybrid and not unlike what I had been aiming for 2 days before when I had coloured it (had I used the right colour). I daresay the overall effect is a golder blonde than I go for. But the point is. It works. It does exactly what it says it will do and it removes any recently applied colour.
I will leave it for now and probably re colour it in a few days! Wish me luck.
okay so I am totally obsessed w this product!!! I totally forgot to take pics after before I toned it but you guys just have to take my word for it.
I bleached my ends and than put ‘medium ash blond on it’ to get the orange out and OMG I hated it so much it was so dark and grey and it looked dirty it was the worst colour on me, wow – so I used this to strip it back which it did most amazing job (it was even lighter than before!!! but pretty yellow again- more than it was before I put the medium ash blond permanent colour because I used some toning purple conditioners and stuff after I bleached it the first time…) btw after I toned it w the well T18toner and now its amazing exactly what I wanted :]
BUT I get why some reviews are not great and here is my take on it:
– yeah it gets really thick and its a nightmare to get it out of that bottle!!! if I need it again and will buy it again I will take it out on regular bowl and mix it in there w the brush!!!! I did manage to take everything out but I had to shake it out hardcore, unscrew the tip off and just shake it out – I’m pretty sure some ppl thought it was finished before it was actually finished I was pretty amazed too that something still come out over and over again!
– I used the entire thing and I needed only on like 4-5 inches of my ends of my hair, so yeah if I was doing the entire head I would definitely buy at least two esp if I had really thick hair
– instructions – I mean my English suxs but yeah it could have been more straight forward it’s not the best
but you guys my hair was definitely NOT damaged at all – and I bleached it prior two times and coloured it that medium ash blond crap – (even tho before this I started with super shinny silky natural dark brown hair without one split end…. I haven’t done anything to my hair in like 6 years)
it smells great I could not believe things I read about the other products it was super scary – like it didn’t come out after 8 washes!!
and it is well priced. I definitely would recommend it to all my friends :] xo
