For what you pay I expect that it would be heavier and build with a thicker construction. To last you longer as it is, and also a heavier weight would just help to press the guys into the actual ground a little bit more. But the concept and ideal is nice for proper spacing and allowing you to get more into one space.
I find this to be very helpful in knowing exactly how many seeds to plant in my raised bed garden. I liked it so much that I got one for someone else as a gift that was well received. Really takes some of the guesswork out of how many seeds to plant of specific vegetables.
I’m new to gardening, this is my first time having a garden and I truly didn’t know how to start. After some research I discovered the sq/ft garden method. For those of you who don’t know the method, behind your seed packs you will see the spacing requirements for each plant. You put this plastic template on the ground and then plant in the seeds in the appropriate holes (based on the plant spacing). That easy! I love this method because it allows you to plant more in a small space, which = more crops! A must have if you want to maximize your garden space!
I’ve been trying to be a gardener for three years. Every year I fail. I can never get the seeds in right or spaced right. This system is EXACTLY what I needed. My wife saw it on Dragon’s Den. I ordered that night and got it the next day! This is brilliant!
Bought one for ourselves and family next door with twins 7 years. Can’t say enough about this product as a stand alone and a great companion to the book: Square Foot Gardening With Kids. Looking forward to making the most of tiny and large gardening projects.
I never understood videos showing people just dropping all their seed packet in a small 2 foot section trench of their gardens then removing like 80 % of the sprouted seeds to thin out. With this square, you can drop in 1 seed or 2 if you prefer and then wait for it to sprout. This saves so much in seeds it’s amazing and the plants are perfectly spaced. I started late carrots, 2 inches apart and they look nice and orderly.
Color coded slots and a handy spacing chart are a great addon.
Planted 3 feet with the correct holes and got more lettuce perfectly spaced than I could imagine!
The depth stick is a nice addition, and the chart makes it easy.
Worth it!
New and experienced gardeners may find a “soil blocker” useful as well for your inside spring starters. It’s a contraption that punches your moist soil into cubes. There’s different size blocks you can get. The one I found had dibber attachments so it prepped the blocks perfectly. It prevents your plants from getting root bound in their containers during the early germination phase because you don’t put them in containers. I put the soil blocks in trays under grow lights and bottom watered. Just search “soil blocker”.
Arrived promptly. My 8 x 4 ft raised bed was marked out with string (square foot gardening method) and some of the string had rotted away so I was going to have to sort that out. When I saw this seeding square it was a god send. I ordered it immediately, even though it was a bit pricey. Very simple and easy to use. Definitely would recommend.
First off I’d like to say I think this product is really well suited to “raised vegetable bed gardening” and to two particular groups of people — those who are brand new to gardening and really haven’t gotten a good sense of proper plant spacing, and us old-timers with bad knees and aching backs who just want to make the planting process as fast as possible so we can go inside and take an advil, LOL. If you are a super-sturdy 35 year old who has been gardening for a few years you might think this product is unnecessary. But for those who are just learning, or who are teaching kids, or who are starting to having some issues gardening without pain, this thing is a great tool. With a few caveats.
You can probably use this in garden beds for flowers, etc., but I don’t see that being as useful as in raised veggie beds where squares and rows work the best. A few problems I encountered were lumpy dirt, loose dirt, and the poker product that comes with it for making the holes have a few issues. Here are some tips for making this work better for you:
1) Level the section you are about to plant as perfectly as possible before starting. Remove any lumping soil as it will prevent you from getting the square to lay down nicely.
2) WET your soil with a hose before starting. Not soaking wet (you don’t want mud), but enough so that when you press this into the soil you can see your squares. If your soil is too dry you don’t see the marks you are making.
3) The orange “poker” stick that is supposed to make the holes is kind of a mixed bag. A lot of seeds only want to be planted 1/4″ or 1/2″ down, but if you press the poker only 1/4″ into the soil thru the template, a lot of times you can’t see where your holes are. So I learned to just make the biggest holes I could then go back and rub the soil where the holes are to the proper depth. So I didn’t really use the poker to measure so much as I did just to make the holes. You’ll see what I mean when you use the product.
Otherwise, highly recommend. Saved me a TON of time planting the corn patch and some other things!!
Downsides: to be honest I really don’t use the funnel, and you have to develop your own tricks for covering the seed in the holes you’ve punched. (My soil is heavy and doesn’t naturally fill back in over the seeds—my favourite technique so far is taking my conditioned newly mixed soil and dropping it on top of the square while it’s still in the ground and after my seeds have been inserted. I then rub off the dirt to clear the square and it all falls into the garden conveniently covering my seeds.)
I’d also suggest a change or examination over their planting guide. Double check your seed packets, and if you combine this with vertical trellises or cages or posts you can actually fit some of those “requires up to 4 sq. Ft” plants into less space. (Shout out to all you city gardeners who want higher yields with the minimal garden space you have!) I’d also recommend relay planting with plants of different maturity rates in the same square.
I can’t wait to use this with my kids! I ordered this so hopefully come spring me and the kids will be out their planting for the summer, I really want the kids to get into growing their own and this looks great. It looks simple to use and great for us as we don’t have a large area to plant in. A great buy!
