It actually does make secateurs and tools sharper. I used it on a 3 year old pair of Felco’s and the difference was noticeable. The oil sponge is a good idea too. My only gripes are that it’s slightly awkward to use on certain shape blades and it’s also a bit flimsy.
What a good little sharpener! Secateurs take 3 or 4 swipes in the v shaped end and they’re good to go. Very pleased with this sharpener which is much easier and quicker that the whetstone type that I used to use.
Great little gadget for sharpening all sorts of things. Sadly I now have to clean & sharpen the tools as well as doing the gardening so I was looking for an easy way to do it & this fits the bill for the small tools like the secateurs.
I initially bought this to make up the value of the order but I have found it very useful in keeping my tree loppers and secateurs sharp. It is easy to use and certainly sharpens the blade and can also remove notches in the blade.
Both are easy to use. This one has a little v groove which makes is easier to keep a consistent angle, the other has a flat sharpener which is useful for filing down any burr on the back of the blade which this doesn’t. So having both is useful – if I had to pick one over the other, I’d probably choose the other one though it’s only just adequate for secateurs. Buy both 🙂
I have already submitted my review on this sharpener. It is an excellent tool, very easy to handle and therefore, to sharpen blades of my gardening tools. Very fit for purposed at a very good price.
I bought this three years ago, and I do not know why I waited so long to buy a blade sharpener. It does a good job on my garden tools.
They are a decent pair so thought I’d give this a go. To say I was amazed is an understatement!
About 3 or 4 goes and the cutting blade really was razor sharp returning them to as new. I like the oil soaked pad that is contained in the handle which gives the newly sharpened blade a coat of oil.
Tried it on some old shears which I had previously sharpened many times on an oil stone & not so good. I think this was mainly due to the oil stone use messing up the angles etc and over time this may be corrected.
For the price though….. 5 stars
I wasn’t sure if this was going to work or not, but after having got some expensive secateurs that needed sharpening if thought I would give it a try. It is now a greenhouse must have, it’s brillia
It is designed to reach into a pivoted tool and sharpen its blade but it cannot reach quite as far into some tools as I might wish. For example, with an anvil secateurs (not Spear & Jackson and more than 20 years old), it will reach to within 6-8mm of the pivot. If it could be dismanted, and some models are simply dismantled, I might be able to sharpen the entire working section of the blade. As I cannot recall ever sharpening the secateurs since its purchase, this inexpensive device has given it a new life.
It should be noted that there is just one carbide sharpening blade in this tool and it is marked with a ‘-‘ on the innner surface; the other is a guide to achieve the correct angle. Unlike another reviewer, mine did have the oiled sponge within the handle, which thanks to its soft grip design, is very comfortable to use.
Inexpensive and a worthwhile purchase if it suits your needs.
Great little tool for sharpening all sort of items – secateurs, loppers, spades and scissors. Very easy to use and the inclusion of the little oiled sponge is good for those of use who never remember to do this.
I bought this item to use with the *Spear & Jackson Shears*. They certainly sharpen it well & to the same standard as I bought it
Also I have used them to sharpen other garden tools. It is so easy to use & they feel comfortable in the hand.
The price is perfect. I have bought a couple more as presents.
I purchased the Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Blade Sharpener at the same time I bought a an extendable tree lopper. It works fine and have used it to sharpen my shears and other bladed tools, the only thing was as I tend not to read instructions I didn’t find the antirust sponge tool located in the handle until after I had finished.
