This expansion had some nice pieces to it. I liked the addition of the meeples with the special powers. I felt the area control part of the board was a little disjointed. It felt like the game was just trying to throw random gaming elements into the game to appeal to more people without really making it fit the theme. Overall, a nice value for the money though.
I’ve owned Viticulture for years without wanting or needing this expansion, but was given it as a birthday present. And it’s… interesting! Is it required? Absolutely not. Is it as good as the base game? Yes! But it’s good in an interesting way: it allows you a glimpse of a version of Viticulture from an alternate universe. It doesn’t add anything substantial to the core experience, but it makes the core experience different enough that you can play a completely different version of the game, extending its replayability.
The base game is brilliant and this expansion has greatness in it as well. We are living through a board game Renaissance with a historic number of board games released each year. This one will stand the test of time. Just buy it.
Careful, this is the extension! You need the essential viticulture game. However, the game is much more awesome with this extension. If you know this game already, the extension gives you the possibility do to actions every season, not just summer and fall. The extension also fits in the essential box, so you don’t have to carry both. Love it!
On of the best game they have. Base viticulture is fun, this makes it even more fun and a bit more complicated.
As huge scythe fans we think this one is right up there with scythe
This is an expansion game for Viticulture and I will say it definitely adds to the game play. You get a new board which adds 2 more seasons and other special cards. I don’t play just Viticulture anymore with out using this expansion. Have fun making wine.
I read the many reviews that the Tuscany expansion renders the Essential Edition board obsolete. I did not believe them. I now admit that they were absolutely correct. Since buying the Tuscany expansion, we have only played on the base board twice. Once to teach new players and once to play with my wife’s parents. Every other time we have played on the Tuscany board. We have not used the specialized meeples, but the buildings and the new board quality of life improvements make the Tuscany expansion a must have. The game with the Tuscany board is a step up from the base game.
This is a must have expansion for Viticulture essential edition.
Makes a great game even better, with the addition of specialist workers and buildings and a new board.
If you have Viticulture then you must have this.
I can’t imagine playing Viticulture without Tuscany now. So many little issues in the original game have been fixed with it. There is more time to create wine with this, which is what the game is all about, and the economy is lot more balanced. Seasons work better too. It is just a better game.
Especially with an expansion, the box gets a bit cramped! That’s my only real complaint.
Having purchased the base essential edition, I wanted to get expanded product. I was not disappointed, in fact, I think this particular expansion raises the quality of the game enough I don’t think I would want to play without it again.
The new way to when you wake up each season gives more bonuses to players for sleeping in that much more, but means they don’t get to make their decisions first. The change in how to select who will be first player is also amazing, giving the bonus to being first player, but next year having to go the year without bonuses.
If you love this game, get this expansion. It will make your love become an obsession.
This is a GREAT expansion for Viticulture! My family and friends love it: not just for the added seasons but for increasing the challenge level removing any advantage that comes from just being the 1st player. I definitely recommend this to everyone looking to improve their gaming sessions!
Great expansion to the Essential Edition. I would recommend this for all players, it adds some additional layers to the game, without being too complicated. You can pick and choose which parts to use, if you’re playing with someone who’s never played Viticulture before, I would just use the new board and the influence section, and skip the special workers and structures. Once everyone’s played, I’d say go all in!
I’ve only played this game 2-player so far, but it’s so much fun! It’s not too hard to learn, and the rules are very easy to follow and make a lot of sense in the process of making wine. I was worried it would be a little to hard to learn and just a bit too complicated for a quick game. But my wife and I can play this under an hour, and absolutely love it!!!! It really makes you think and you end up switching strategies half way through the game. I love this game and easily is in my top 5 board games.
If you own and enjoy viticulture you have to get this expansion. It comes with three new expansions:
1: A new (double-sided) board with 4 seasons and some new actions
2: Structure cards, and a structure player board (x6) which will give you new benefits and ways to gain points, perform actions, or other bonuses.
3. Special workers, allowing you to pay one extra coin when training a worker to have a worker with a special ability based on one of the 24 new cards. There are 2 special worker abilities you can choose to train in each game.
Add more variety and new challenges to your viticulture games. Easy to learn and fun to play. A must buy!
If you have Viticulture — then just order this now and thank me later. The game is fine, it really is. But it is nowhere near as good as it is with this expansion. Honestly, fully one-half of the game is the Tuscany expansion. Go get it.
Are you still reading this? GO ORDER THIS NOW!
An excellent addition to the world of Viticulture! Very smartly designed to allow you to add new elements the game as you like, giving this set an almost “legacy light” feeling. While the original Viticulture certainly stands brilliantly on its own, the Tuscany expansion modules allow for even more variety and replayability in a game that already has an incredibly high replay value. Highly recommended!
I’m kind of a fan of Viticulture but the Tuscany expansion takes this game to a whole other level. It does make the game play longer (don’t believe the 45 minutes on the box) – but it adds so much that it is quite worth it. Initially feels VERY slow, but it picks up very quickly after year 3-4. Works well as a two player game – I think much better than straight Viticulture, but also super fun as a 3-4 player game (haven’t played it with more than that yet).
Just the extended board makes this a must-have for the base Viticulure. It’s much better at 2 players than the base because there are spaces that have bonuses and some actions that have multiple occurrences (e.g. build a structure in spring and fall). But at any player count, it adds a lot of extra options while still being competitive for the spaces you want. The structure cards are interesting as well, but don’t end up being built too often. Have yet to even introduce the special workers.
I normally refuse to buy expansions for board games because I figure if a board game isn’t good on its own, there’s no sense in spending more money on it when there are hundreds of other games I could purchase. I’d heard so many great things about Tuscany, however, I decided to try it out. I have to admit, it turned an enjoyable if somewhat forgettable game into a great game. The components are numerous and of good quality, the rulebook is easy to follow and a snap to get into, especially if you’re already familiar with Viticulture gameplay, and it adds several new and interesting decisions to the base game. If you’re short on shelf space, with very little finagling everything in the expansion fits into the base game box, which is a nice bonus. I am not going to make a habit of buying the expansions for my board games, but I absolutely do not regret this purchase.
If you’re a viticulture fan, this is a must have expansion.
It adds a new extended board that is broken into 4 seasons. Overall, it adds a few modules to the game that you can use separate or all together. I recommend starting with one and learning it and then adding one and repeat.
Once I learned them all I haven’t played without them. They add so much depth to your strategy and the game.
You have the extended board. Four full seasons and a new reputation mechanic.
You now have some star tokens that you place in regions on the reputation map. They earn you immediate rewards when placed and, possibly, victory points at the end of the game.
There’s special workers. You can recruit this type of worker for 1 Lira more than the regular price and they have special abilities. When you set up the game you select two out of the deck of workers and place the cards next to the board. Those are the special powers for this game. So it adds variability there.
Then there’s “structure”. It’s a whole deck of special building cards that you can build on your playmat. These buildings are for your use only and they give you something special that nobody else can do and vice versa.
Tuscany adds many great things to Viticulture. Most importantly, and expanded board that breaks down all action spaces into 4 seasons, instead of the original 2 season. This expansion also adds buildings that can be built with the “Build Structure” action space. As well as special workers that have special abilities when you use them for certain action spaces.
The expansion doesn’t really add anything that couldn’t be understood by new players, but everything that is added are complete game changers. If you enjoy Viticulture, GET THIS EXPANSION.
We’ve been playing this non-stop since it arrived, adding individual bits of the expansion as our mood fits. The new board is great, and you can add just a single expansion mechanic or a whole bunch.
This game has a surprising amount of depth for a worker-placement game (which I usually don’t like), but this expansion will make this game last many years longer than the stock game would have.
Probably the best expansion I’ve ever experienced.
Although the expansion has changed with the introduction of the “Essential Edition” to me the expansion is still a must have. The board included adds a lot more to the game, I really enjoy playing with the Tuscany board. If only the metal lira were still part of the expansion, although they are available as well.
This expansion makes the base game ‘Viticulture’ even more amazing. If you like to simulate growing your own wine grapes and then bottling and selling your wine, then this is the game for you!!!
Tuscany is a superb expansion to Viticulture. This doesn’t take the standard expansion pathway of just adding a few new cards and models, but completely reinvents the game play – yet managing to stay familiar to the Viticulture you know and love. There are three different expansion elements in this box and you can choose to play with any three alone or combine them as you please. We’ve just played it with all three expansions included and it makes for a great change if you’ve become over familiar with standard play of Viticulture.
I’d highly recommend this simply because you can add elements in that just add into the standard Viticulture game play – but then completely renew the experience by adding all three into the mix.
Delivered on time and the package arrived in excellent condition. Good game components, and love the larger board. The expansion adds a lot to the base game, and while in my opinion “worthwhile” rather than “essential”, it’s a solid addition to my games collection. I’m not a fan of one of the modules (Influence seems a bit tacked on), that’s just personal taste. The rulebook itself is a bit cumbersome in places, but does the business. I own the Viticulture Essential Edition, and definitely regard this as a permanent addition to playing the game.
Viticulture is one of my favourite games of last year so I was really excited to try out this expansion pack. I was not disappointed. The expansion comes with several new functions including special workers, more actions, new visitor cards and special structures. Each new feature enhances the game significantly and I am delighted with this purchase.
I love Viticulture. I read a lot of reviews saying that Tuscany takes it to the next level. Asked a few friends for their opinion. Every comment was positive.
I can only agree.
Tuscany really is outstanding. Best expansion I’ve come across by some distance. It adds refinement and depth in a customisable way, to an already excellent game.
Game designers do not always take player feedback with the careful ear that Jamey Stegmaier has. This is the 3rd edition of Viticulture and its expansion in just a few years, but they have taken a great game with a few bugs and made an A++ game that needs to be in any serious board gamer’s collection. Viticulture Essential Edition is a fine game on its own, but adding the Tuscany Essential Edition expansion makes it one of my favorite games of all time. The Tuscany board truly expands the game, giving you more choices in each season, and making turn order matter so much more than it did before. The game is elegant, fun, thinky, and, to quote Inside The Box, “classy as @#$%”.
In case you somehow don’t know, the idea is to run a wine business in Italy. You have some land, some workers, some seed money, and some leads (cards) on how you might want to sell wine and earn victory points. On the surface it looks like your goal is to plant some grape seeds, harvest/squeeze grapes, bottle wine, age it, and sell it. However, that is ONE way to run a wine business. You might want to buy your grapes from other places instead of growing them. You might want to invite guests to come and do wine sampling and run your business on tourism. You might want to bring influential guests to help you compete with others. You might want to sell specific type of wine to a small audience, or you might want to mass produce cheap wine and sell it in a larger market. There are many ways to manage a wine business, and each way MIGHT be the best way for you this time around.
This equally viable multiple paths to victory is a Stonemaier Games staple that make their games so much more interesting than other types of victory point race games. Because there are so many ways to accumulate points, you cannot ignore what other players are doing. You may have to change up your play as you go, either because someone is blocking you from doing what you want, or possibly because other players are fighting over limited resources and ignoring the low hanging fruit that you can come in and just take (pun intended).
Viticulture EE would be in my top 50 games, but with the Tuscany EE expansion, it is easily in my top 10. What a world we live in where games like this exist. Say what you will about the strides video games have made. Board games just keep getting better and better. Keep it up Stonemaier.
This is a HIGHLY recommend expansion for the excellent Viticulture board game. It just falls short of mandatory purchase because of the revised “Viticulture: Essential Edition” released just a few years ago. That version of the game fixed all of the flaws of the original and added the ‘essential expansions’ from the original Tuscany. This is just more expansions, nearly all them good and add good stuff to an already great game. If you love Viticulture and want more, GET THIS!
