Pond Predators

With over 3 million ponds and pools across UK gardens, many attract unwanted wildlife and predators that can be easily deterred using a variety of products on the market.

The most common pond predators are herons and cats, opportunist predators that sit waiting at the pond edge to strike. Herons often inspect local ponds and lakes in search of a catch. They feed mostly on aquatic organisms; their favourite dishes being small fish, frogs, and any large insects or larvae. Due to their diet, garden ponds are especially attractive as feeding grounds for herons.

Decoys

Herons are solitary feeders and don’t like to share their feeding ground with others. Placing a fake heron around your pond area is often enough to stop real herons from landing and feeding.

Other floating faux predators will protect your pond from attack. Reflective surfaces like mirrors or floating Diamond-Light Pond Protectors will also give protection that moves around on the surface of the water.

Motion Sensor Repeller

The Jet-Spray Pond & Garden Protector offers another tool in the defence against pond predators. Using a PIR motion sensor it activates a jet of water sharply repelling herons, foxes, cats and other nuisance wildlife from your garden.

The full range of products from Defenders offers protection for your pond and will keep predators at bay.

Cats have been leaving poos in the middle of my lawn all the time. After installing this sprayer I haven’t see any cat poo for weeks already. It is very effective!

My tips of using the sprayer:
    – install it by the edge of your lawn so you can run the hose along the side nicely
    – while planning for your installation spot make sure that you have a way to access it from its side or back, so that you have a way to switch it off without getting all wet
    – tune down the sensitivity level to reduce false alarms during windy days. I keep it low and you can see from the video that it is still very effective in detecting movement from a distance

A local cat was using our lawn and borders as its toilet. Every day. The situation had become intolerable Cleaning up the poop was a disgusting task, something else was needed.

I’m so glad I found this product. It works like a machine gun. It detects movements and blast jets of water at quick intervals rotating over the designated area. Once the device was in place, the pooing stopped. I use this jet spray in conjunction with another repellent sensor.

Thankfully, the cat no longer visits or fouls the garden. No more pooper scooping. I’m delighted with the result.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUsing it in tandem with ultrasonic animal repellent it stopped the neighbourhood cats and my own cats using the lawn as a litter tray.
The sound stopped some cats the water would probably stop them all by itself.

Video shows it reaching 6-7mtrs, it has plenty adjustment and would spray over my neighbours wall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stopped the neighbourhood cats

Uses two AA batteries where some need 4.
There was an issue that the rotating spray head adjustment would not work but needed to adjust the rings to get it to spray where I wanted it. After a few days the spray head blew off but the screw connection must have been loose from new. Refitted and all OK now.
The reaction from the cats was priceless!

This is the most effective thing we have used so far. Other methods were ineffective such as the light and high pitched sound device and also granuals. This has stopped our garden being used as a public toilet by local cats.

Excellent product to successfully repel cats after couple of nights they stopped coming in garden completely. Have wasted so much money on gadgets that havnt worked but thoroughly recommend this one.

Bought this 2 years ago. Sensitivity is not great but worked well for a while deterring a pesky cat who visited at night. Recently the unit has developed fine cracks in the plastic tube opposite the water entry at the base of the unit. Consequently, it is constantly leaking water sprays and is irreparable and unusable because the fine leaks are in the plastic moulding.

I set up two motion detection sprayers to deter a pesky heron(s) from having another go at cleaning the 30 large assorted goldfish out of my pond. So far, the sprayers work well, and they spray at each other on either side of the pond. The dogs have quickly learned to avoid them. I also have meter high plastic fence posts along one side of the pond where the heron would have direct access. I have strung 6 lines of tough fishing line on the posts to keep the heron back. I have also installed the solar gadget that motion detects and makes dog barking and gunshot noises (available from Amazon). I have not yet heard from the Neighbours about the noise, but it is still early days. No sign of a heron attack so far but I know several herons live at the nearby river and they fly over now and again.

I am so relieved to say that this worked instantly. And I even detached it from the hosepipe after a few weeks but left the thing standing in the garden, and 3 months later, still no cat poo. I guess it still deters the cats because they expect it to go off. Or maybe they’ve found a new spot and aren’t bothered with my front garden any more.
I tried a sonic repellent thing in the past and it was completely ineffective, but this works perfectly. If you can’t tell, I’m beyond chuffed with it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usersied ultrasonic, foxes just ignore now. but this sprayer is great – they dont like it, yet is harmless. just have to remember to dodge it when hanging the washing
seems to help to move it around the garden as they get wise on how to get round it, so move it around every week or so when i think of it. also can easily change angle of detection. battery life ok, i was going to extend the wire on an old usb charger but they have lasted 2 months and still going strong.
i did disconnect during the sharp cold spell, as didnt want the risk of it being damaged by freezing
yes, make sure it is the STV 415 model, they do two models, the other one didnt have good reviews

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI am going to start by what I don’t like: getting sprayed every time I forgot is there.
This is by far the best cat deterrent. Or I can say the only one as nothing else works.
For whoever is thinking to try it, don’t think, just go for it.
I wanna start by saying that I love animals in general. What I don’t like is having poo in the garden, in the herbs pots, in the flower beds and other places like the water bowl that the foul cats were drinking from, and ah, cat wee on my garden shoes that normally stay outside.
I have tried several cat deterrents up until now but honestly before this device I thought only actual poison would keep my garden poo free.
It is well made so it’s only spraying when it senses movement. It does not leak and I must say that for an entire week I haven’t had one poo in my garden.
The only problem is that I’ve ruined it when it froze. I was smart enough to turn off the water but I wasn’t smart enough to take it inside so the water inside it freezes.
Now I have ordered the second one because in the few days after the snow melted I was lucky to notice 6 more poos in the garden…
Just so you know, before getting this device I have tried all natural deterrents like pepper/chilli, essential oils, cat scatter granules, ultrasonic device, food on their poo(they ate it by the way). And also I borrowed my friends dog for a while and they still managed to mark their territory with the dog in the garden.
So once again, if you need a cat deterrent stop waisting your money on anything else and get this beast.
Or if you want anything cheaper go for a kiddies water gun and stay there 24/7
    I hope this helped.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI have several ultrasonic cat deterrents in my garden but I think the cats are getting used to them. I needed to up the anti. This product certainly does that. You can set the sensitivity of the unit via a control knob. Detection is very good but I would agree with other comments that the unit will spuriously trigger on sunny days. I wanted the unit for night time use where the sun is obviously not an issue. I am not aware of any spurious night time triggering. When the unit activates it goes mental. the noise of the unit probably scares the cats as much as the water jet. You can adjust the arc that the water sprays. My only complaint about the unit is that it tends to spray over the head of cats. It would have been nice if the spray head was on an adjustable head so that you could tilt it independently of the sensor unit. Currently if you tilt the assembly to spray at a lower level the sensor is also tilted more towards the ground which is not terribly useful. Perhaps in the next revision of the unit the spray head could be on a ball joint to allow better directional control of the spray pattern. Having said this, I would still recommend this product – certainly for night time use anyway.

I have been buying these for the last 3 years. I was absolutely fed up with local cats and foxes pooping all over my garden of a night time that I spent alot of sweat, money and tears doing up. So I bought one of these to try out. For the first few weeks I was hearing it going off at least 5-6 times per night which was brilliant as I knew it was working. Only downside for me is that I have to purchase 2 of these units a year as I live in a hard water area and the lime scale ends up damaging the unit. But I would rather spend 70-80 every year if it means no poop in my garden what so ever. The other downside is that the sun seems to set the sprinkler off during the day for some reason but I only had the problem of a night time so it works for me. Plus I never even hear it go off anymore as the cats and foxes already know not to come in to my garde

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPurchased last year 2021, it works great, no more cat’s poo! The battery life last about a month in winter, about two to three months in summer. Unfortunate it cracked due to cold frost as the device head is heavy because of the long pole makes it flexible too much to cause the cracked. Now asked for replacement with two years warranty, hopefully it will to solved soon. I wish it had brass connect instead of plastic! Update… 07/04/23 Frost night has cracked the inner tube and leaking. It would be great to redesign, use in metal tube instead. Warranty expires, and no return accept now, so I have to buy another one.

This is my second one of these after having tried a different model. It works well and detects small animals right down to squirrels – even large pigeons! The spray is adjustable and it makes enough noise while spraying to scare most pests. Brave squirrels eventually just turn their backs while it’s spraying, but on the whole it works well. The only problem I had with the first one was that I accidentally left it out on a cold night and the frost caused it to freeze up and crack the plastic joint where the water pipe connects. It takes two AA batteries, which seem to last a decent amount of time.

We have a cat but 2 cats new to the neighbourhood are coming in to the garden and chasing ours away so I wanted something I could use to stop them coming in.
It works. I did see one of them set it off and it ran away (rather fast)
The only problem is that all the connections leak which isn’t good. I will use the tape as some other reviewers recommend to see if it helps but you shouldn’t have to modify the unit yourself to rectify
    a problem.
So on that basis I only gave it a 4 star review.

It does work but on a windy day it goes off all the time.I most likely have wasted a lot of water therefore . Once the cats are scared to come in to your garden you can turn it off for a few days to save water but after about 4 days they are back am now experimenting also with putting chicken wire flat down over the paths where I think they land . This has had some success stopping them messing behind my wheelie bins. I’ve tried everything over the last 3 years since they arrived next door. Still at least they’ve stopped leaving me decapitated bird corpses and half dead mice .
I really have gone off cats

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBrough the product as garden has become poo drop off for local cat. Since using has been effective as as no further deposits. I did check you tube videos which proved to be very helpful. If you do cat issue believe will be very effective.

My design consideration are, 1) Spike has already bent, this need to more substantive metal or more ridge plastic 2) Needs have off switch 3) need to show counter i.e. did go off. Also did find that on high setting unit is not very stable, i.e. a bit to heavy other model see have tripod stand which may be an option.

Otherwise, very good and has appear stop cat from poo is my garden.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is the only cat deterrent you’ll need, don’t waste your money on lawn sprinkle or gel as they wash away too quickly and if like me, you’re busy with life, you’ll forget to reapply and the cats will be back!

I had a cat pooping in my lawn every night and tried everything to keep it away, that was until I stumbled across this little gem. It’s easy to set up and just attaches to you hose pipe. Once on, it will pick up any movement and spray jets of water in that general direction. All it took was one encounter from my neighbours cat with this and I’ve never hear it scarper so quickly! Lol I spotted it scoping out the detector for the next couple of days but it’s not been in my garden since (over a month later) I only kept the detector on at night time for a week or so. Think I’ll pop it back in soon just as a reminder to the cat as to what awaits him if he crosses into my garden again but a job well done!!! So pleased This is defo worth a buy if you’re at your wits end like I was!

A few years ago the local moggies had a little get together and decided that my garden would truly be the best place to sleep and use as a toilet. Possibly it was the pristine shrubs, the sweet smelling borders or perhaps the plentiful supply of birds and frogs.
As of the start of last year they had turned my little piece paradise into a foul smelling wasteland.

Come lockdown, I wanted my garden back. I’d tried ultrasound emitters, sprays, pretty much all but this little device. 24 hours after pressing ‘Buy Now’, I fitted it to the hose and waited. At 8 AM sharp the next door moggy hopped over the fence for his morning constitutional, but today he was greeted by high pressure jets of water, not dissimilar to a crack team of children with water pistols. After an air pirouette, he launched himself back to whence he came.
A year on my paradise is back. Occasionally I get a foul whiff from the neighbours garden, who given the shouting at young Tiddles, don’t seem to be so keen on cat ownership anymore.

Four stars – five with a motion camera option.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI have a new neighbour, who I will refer to as “mad cat lady”. She has 8 cats. Yes you read that right. Eight. I’ve never liked cats, and I especially don’t like them hunting in my garden in nesting season, as I have welcomed blackbirds, bluetits, sparrows, chaffinches, wagtails and occasional goldfinches, collared doves and others to my little wilded environment. “Mad cat lady” suggested I spray her errant invasive species with a water pistol, but I have never been able to get close enough before they run away. And I don’t have time to sit looking out of the window waiting for them to show up and murder the innocent indigenous wildlife. Hence this purchase! I have to say it was utterly hilarious watching her previously bold feline friends get totally drenched and humiliated the moment they popped their fluffy heads above the parapet. I bought 2 units to cut off their preffered access routes over the wall, and the motion detection is sensitive enough to trigger an arc of water from 10 yards away. Careful placement is necessary because if you have tree branches or other foliage waving in the wind then they will trigger constantly. They are made of fairly lightweight plastic and this is one reason why they can’t be left outside in Sub-Zero temperatures, or they will crack. But the sensitivity dial on the back of the unit is very intuitive, and the batteries seem to last for a very long time. Perfectly usable through the spring summer and autumn in the UK climate, and after a few drenchings all but the stupidest cats will have got the message. NO ENTRY! Not all of my neighbour’s 8 pests are blessed with intelligence though, which meant I was entertained for several days by the intrepid slow learners being ejected three or four times a day before they finally gave up and stayed their side of the wall. I would happily pay twice the price for a version that had brass or other metal construction, and so could be left outside 365 days a year. But at this price I still think they represent pretty good value, and I bought a third unit for my girlfriend’s Dad.

I have bought it to get rid of cats from my garden and it works but its not so easy to set the sensivity of the sensor!

Sometimes even drop of the water can activate it and sometimes I had cats playing just around the sprinkler and it didnt work.

Even if I was using the best batteries I had to change them very often so I have lost the intrest and sprinkler landed in the garage!

One of the bigest issue I have discovered is the fact that there is no switch to turn it off so each time I wanted to play in the garden I had to turn water off, so sprinkler was constantly working just without water.

Well packed as always with Amazon!

With a heron becoming a regular visitor to our pond, we needed something to discourage it from returning. The heron proof netting stopped it carrying off our goldfish, but it kept returning so I got this product. It’s a bit fiddly to setup – the instructions aren’t the easiest to follow – but it works well. I turn on the water supply before it gets dark and off again during the morning, as the heron tended to visit first thing. After a few weeks, it seems to have given up.
Minor issues: it doesn’t have an on/off switch, so you either need to take the batteries out when you’re in the range of the detector or, as I did, turn the device away from where you’re working. The other issue is that the instructions advise not to use this when there are going to be frosts – guessing water freezing inside would damage it – so I’m hoping the heron won’t decide to come back during the winter!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOk so our situation, our tubs and flowers were being dug up and destroyed. We thought foxes, so after looking at humane methods of scaring them away we went for the water spray. It took a while to figure out the settings and sensitivity, probably reading the instructions might have helped. The first couple of nights we could hear the activation, plus the grass was looking nice with regular watering. Dialled it down, set the distance and its still going on the original set of batteries. Since installing this we have not had any further destruction. I did get up one night, heard a noise in the garden, looked out and saw a fox, rapidly joined by a second, the sensor picked up the movement and clicked to spray, turned out someone stupid had forgotten to turn the tap on! However, they avoided a stern scolding as the noise itself startled the foxes and they left in a hurry. Now it maybe that the foxes have got bored with destroying our plants, but the evidence would suggest it does an effective job!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve had this product for 10 days. Purchased as my 2nd line of defence to deter a persistent fox. My 1st line of defence is an ultrasonic sound machine. Used together I seem to be winning the battle against the fox….no poo seen in over a week. I do feel this is down to the ultrasonic sound machine. However, the jet spray is now also serving as a means to water the lawn and is also good fun with the kids. Battery compartment seems secure and the detection range of this product is around 10 metres when on setting level 9. I tend to keep to setting level 3 or 4 to ensure efficient use, and I only use this during the night. I also suggest that you ensure the hose does not have a leaky connector as this will cause you to waste a lot of water. The jet spray is powerful once you figure out how to adjust its setting…and you can reduce or enlarge the spraying width to your desired preference which is very useful. So far so good….but I’ll review again in a month’s time.

Golden Review Award: 41 From Our UsersI read numerous review before buying this so had a good idea of what to expect. Many of the negative reviews commented on the connections breaking which I can see being a problem if you try to overtighten things. It does leak but rather than try to screw everything to breaking point you can just use some ptfe tape. Instead I’ve just being using mine sparingly. I switch it off during the day and back on at night when I have the cat problem.
It’s very sensitive and I’ve found that in my garden with the sensitivity at the lowest setting it still triggers randomly due to light moving through the trees.

It’s worked very well and the cats started avoiding my garden after less than a week of being soaked. They’ve started to reappear so I’ll set it up again as a reminder to them 🙂

    Notes:
The dial on the top adjusts the range by making the actual spray spread more, i.e. less focused. The water pressure can also be used to increase the range.
The horizontal angle can be adjusted using the green clips. I found that the best adjustment was to remove them and replace so the stopper sits within the gap between the two clips rather than between the opening of each clip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cats or kids

So our neighbour has started to feed 6 stray cats fair play to him for having a decent heart but his good deed now means they use our garden in particular our flower bed as a toilet. I’ve tried using chilli powder which worked but once it rained you’ve to start all over again. I’ve 2 young kids and one recently went to pick up there present to us so I’ve lost it.

I’ve spoken to my neighbour about this and his view is to deal with it cause he’s got a dog so there’s no chance he’ll have the problem we have.

So after much research I came across this device, I’ve only had it a couple of days but I can safely say that the cats are now nowhere to be seen. The motion sensor is really sensitive, a gust of wind will set it off so be prepared. We’ve a rose Bush at the bottom of the garden and when it sways it sets off the sprinkler, great that the flowers are getting there daily water intake but kinda annoying hearing it go off every 2 minutes. I’ve now set the distance to a shorter setting and that seems to work so far. Also worth nothing the spray is really high, if you have any neighbours either side of you I would suggest not using the extension cause it will go into their garden. I’ve also had to use industrial tape to keep the hose connected to the device so don’t be surprised if the pressure keeps knocking it out. I’m really happy with the purchase, didn’t cost a lot of money and it has done what I needed it to do so I’ve a happy family now and I can rest easy knowing my kids can go out and not have to do a recon mission first to make sure the area is safe and secure from cat sh#t, Jesus it smells so bad.

Find the perfect setting for your garden and make sure it can stay connected and I’m sure you’ll enjoy using this.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersI bought this to get rid of foxes from my garden at night. It was quite easy to set up, there’s a dial at the back for the ferocity level of spray and also a a sliding collar for how far left to right you want the spray to go. There does seem to be a few drops coming from the unit when it’s running but it’s not excessive and I don’t see it as a problem. Build quality seems good although you will need to be careful inserting the spike into the ground as it’s not metal. I have clay soil so I soaked the ground beforehand – don’t bend/twist the unit once it’s in. The sensor is good, and seems to have the quoted distance. My neighbour has one of these too and the water from mine going over the fence sets theirs off which is great for making sure the foxes get chased away completely! The sensor is on one side of the unit but gives 180 degrees coverage. The spray does come out quite high, I was expecting it to come out horizontally to zap the target, however it creates such a commotion it does the job anyway. Turning down the ferocity level dial will stop it going too high/far. So far, it’s done its job and I’ve had no little ‘presents’ from the foxes after a months use. I’ve noticed during the day when I switch the water off that the unit is clicking away. I gather something is setting the sensor off and I think it’s sunlight/reflections/cloud movement. I put a jute bag over mine during the day to save the battery. If you were to use the unit during the day, you might want to create some shade over it. I’ve used this in conjunction with ‘predator eyes’ which are little units that have flashing ‘eyes’ and are solar powered. Be sure to move the products around once in a while to keep the element of surprise as animals are crafty! All in all, I’m pleased with the product and would recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAfter months of having plants ruined, lawn dug up, and rubbish from raided dustbins and fox poo all over the place, I had had enough and started researching deterrents. I decided to go for this rather than the sonic type mainly because I thought even if it didn’t deter the foxes it would if nothing else give the garden a watering. The first few nights were a battle royal with water going off every few minutes, but even though the foxes were still coming in it stopped them doing any damage. Since then they seem to have given up. I still leave it on because I’m sure it wouldn’t take long for them to start coming back again, and it still gets set off from time to time as one of them chances its luck, but so far so good. This has been such a success I have even filled in the holes in the lawn and started replanting, which I’d given up on because as fast as I did it things would get dug up again. Also it’s great to be out in the garden and smelling the flowers rather than the heady aroma of fox poo.

EDIT – After a few months use I have to say this isn’t 100%. The foxes do get used to it to a certain extent. They don’t linger under the spray (and I don’t think they would ever get used to this) so it does effectively protect areas of the garden directly covered by the water jet. The problem is, they learn quite quickly that elsewhere in the garden IS safe, so if you want a completely fox free garden you need to have every bit of it covered, or at least every possible entry point. I had to get a second unit to cover more of the garden, and I may end up getting a third (and I don’t have an especially big garden, just a longish narrow one). *However* all that said I do still regard this product as very effective – these issues say more about the annoying persistence of foxes than they do about the product itself. It has been considerably more effective than my neighbour’s sonic deterrent and less than half the price. Retaining the 5* rating because despite the limitations it has turned the garden back into a garden as opposed to fox toilet and landfill dump.

EDIT 2 – Do NOT leave outside in freezing weather! I stupidly ignored the instructions and didn’t bother to bring it in all winter. There were no problems at first but after the snow in february/march this year the unit now leaks. I took it apart in the forlorn hope something had just come loose but the plastic pipework inside has cracked where water has obviously frozen inside. A bit of frost is probably ok, but it won’t withstand the temperature being below freezing for any period of time.

Golden Review Award: 40 From Our UsersAt last someone has addressed the poor design of the old Jetspray model. This one has been completely re-thought, eliminating the awkward battery compartment with a pop out one and just two AA cells. Much better for quick battery replacement at the far end of the garden. The upright shape sits much more stably on the support and altogether a neater design. I bought mine about a month ago, it worked immediately and has functioned well. The fish seem happy and none have yet disappeared from a large pond on the far side of the garden. Anyone troubled by Herons should consider this new model. Too early to tell if the batteries will run down sooner, or if it can survive a frost, but users may be interested in the setup I have evolved.
The sprinkler sits at the pond edge so it cannot squirt folk. It is linked by a length of hose to the top of the detector which sits well back from the pond so it can respond to any movement near the water edge. I was able to mount my detector 3 feet up, looking downwards to the pond, atop an aluminium tripod which used to be part of a lawn sprinkler. Any high vantage point would serve. So the dastardly Heron has nowhere to land or creep up behind the detector. Long ago I discovered the necessity to locate the detector facing North or the movement of the sun would set it squirting particularly late in the day. Because of high mains pressure I needed a tough, builders quality hose. ordinary ones soon burst. Enjoy your pond!

Batteries lasted more than a year: very good. I placed some old wind chime bars directly in front of the water jet. They produce a cacophony of sound which frightens even me. Fish are thriving.

After a second year I neglected to drain off the water before a frosty night. The lower attachment nut spit and sprayed water all around. I intend to replace it with the same model Pity that plastic fitting is so weak, but my own fault.
