Place One Meeple

On a turn, players can choose 1 of 3 actions. Option 1, players may take one of their meeples from their repository and place it on an unoccupied harbor space.

Unload One Boat

Option 2, players may unload one boat that is moored at the end of a row or column. This is how you acquire tiles that are then placed on your site boards.

Play One Action Token

Option 3, play one action token. Action tokens give a player an extra benefit on their turn. Players can use these tokens to take additional actions, modify the layout of the game, or pick one token directly off a boat.

End of Game Scoring

Each player adds up the points they have earned on each of their site boards. The player with the most points wins.

My husband and I play a game together most days. We have a decent collection of 2 player games and this has added something fun and different. This also has the ability to change the game around a bit which can add some variety to each time we play Imhotep Duel. It also requires some strategy to play.

Love that there is an app to learn the game. Easy to learn, and great fun. Gets your brain going, and The pieces are all good quality. Would recommend.

A quick and fun two player game. I prefer 7 wonders duel, but this is a solid game to have in the rotation. Only ok replay value which keeps it from a 5*

Pros: very quick set-up, quick play time, easy to learn, decent amount of strategy, not much luck involved in the outcome.

Cons: definitely competitive (could be a pro if you like angering your partner), not much variation in gameplay

Imhotep the duel is great little strategy game with some light take that elements. As a big fan of the Imhotep Building game I was excited to see how it would play. The only issue is that some of the rules are not 100% clear and leave a bit to interpretation. In the game you are placing meeples on the board and sailing barges with building pieces to build your monuments. With special action tiles and tile placement giving you extra turns and extra points. All in all a solid little game, but not as good as its predecessor.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI purchased this after a Dice Tower review. Visually, it’s a very interesting game, with different ways to score, ways to place stones, timing to refill your sled or dock a boat.

Personally, I love the uniqueness of the mechanics.

BUT! It’s fairly mean spirited without much way to avoid it. Call it a big conflict. The main culprit is that anyone can move any boat. In this game you can literally force another player to spend up to 4 turns setting something up and denying them any additional points by directing a boat to a non-optimal location. And that’s pretty mean. I’ve played games where there’s natural interference, or that one time you have to do something so you get another turn, but in this game, the confrontation is in every turn.

Overall, the components are nice, visually it looks good, and mechanically it’s very interesting. But I don’t like the spirit. It’s going in the “for sale” bin soon.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIf you are familiar with the original 4 player version of this game, and enjoy that, then purchasing this is a no-brainer. In comparison, the rules for this version: The duel, are deceptively simple. It can be taught fairly quickly and is very easy to understand. But, once the game has begun, the strategies and complexities of the game become evident. This tiny worker placement game is HUGE on strategy. It is not merely a rehash of the original. Rather, the creator was able to take a few key elements and develop a brand new game.

The length of the game is on the shorter side, but not so short that it goes by in a flash. And, just like it’s predecessor, there are a number of variations that can be introduced should you tire of the same old game. The boards flip over to reveal “B” sides that play very differently than the “A” sides.

I’m happy to have this game as an addition to my collection and it does not take up much room!

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersA fun little ‘logic’ game for two players. You select placement of your workers and then, based on how your figures are placed, claim cargo off of ships. It is definitely a “duel,” the game is not just about collecting more points, the two players are constantly at odds and every action will likely undermine your opponent in some way. I also like that you can teach and play the game in about 30 minutes.

Note, this NOT much like the original Imhotep game. If you love the 4 player game, give this game a try before you buy (unlike the Duel version of 7 Wonders which shares a lot in common with the full game). The ‘feel,’ the rules, and strategy of this game is very, very different. You cannot translate strategies from this game and apply them back to the full game (the way you can with 7 Wonders). The theme of the game may be the same, but it is an entirely different game.

I have some minor complaints about the board design and the way the rules are written, but this is still a solid game. Glad I bought it, though not likely to be a real favorite.
