Arrived in good shape, but the bottles were all over the place in the box, no big deal – considering it pre-shaken in transit by Amazon 😉 love the colour selection. Army painter makes great quality stuff.
Organization in photo courtesy of acrylic stand meant for nail polish
These paints work well and bond nicely with the primer. Colours match the non airbrush versions perfectly. A little thick but that’s ok if you add a drop or two of thinner. Better too thick than thin 😉
Also absolute Kaufempfehlung!
Grazie…
I’m very new to airbrushing. Just got my first AK Fine-art airbrush and this set of paint supposed to be my learning tool. Was looking for Vallejo AIR ones, but decided to try this one because of primer bottle in the set. So. I haven’t tried everything yet, just took Alien Purple one to try my Airbrush on peace of bristol paper. Shaked well dropped into cup (as it is stated READY to GO) and got some —.-.- – . – – lines. So first thoughts were it’s my fault (as that’s my first try) or something with 0.3mm nozzle airbrush. But after checking the paint cup, it looked quite strange. like a quite too thick for my knowledge. So I dropped few drops of Vallejo Thinner. No much change in spray lines. So I decided to clean airbrush from paint with Vallejo airbrush cleaner I have. And after this procedure I did see what’s happening. Airbrush didn’t clean at all. Some thick purple particles stay on needle and walls. even after 3 times I tried to clean them up. So long story short. After I eventually cleaned airbrush from all of those clogs I dropped some amount of this purple paint into small jar and find its consistency not very smooth and a way too thick for Airbrush. So I thinned it with a thinner in about 1:1 ratio to get something like sprayable and mixed very well. After that it went quite smooth and nice. Don’t know yet about other colours and a primer. But as very first was acting that way I just can guess that from few to all of them will be needed to prepare same way before putting them into the airbrush. So it is very hard to agree these are ready to go paints. Not sure is it quality control issue or maybe incorrect storage issue.
UPDATE
After some painting I’m giving a 4 stars instead of 3. When You get use to them paints (at least the ones I have used at a moment) they are definitely not bad. Yes I’m still have to thin them a bit and use a Flow Improver to use them with 0.3mm nozzle with 25psi air pressure. Had no problem with Primer and RED, BLACK and LEATHER colours.
Spent years using Vallejo Air and genuinely thought the issue was me. I’d use all sorts of medium and still get clogging regularly, and spend a day and an age cleaning after use – regardless of airbrush. Now I’ve got these Army Painter ones I’m never looking back, no medium mixing faff, just minutes between colour changes, minutes for a full clean out. so impressed. Once I’ve used up my standard Warpaints (brushing on), I’m just going to use these as they are a spot on match, brush on smoothly too and the pigmentation is just perfect. I currently use a Cult of Paint Evo and honestly this combination is just the best.
This box set is a great way to get into airbrushing, the basecoat grey has enough paint for a 100 minitures and the colours can be mixed to make all your basic colours. A great place to start.
Love these! Me and my partner have just started getting into 3D printing and these are a great way to add more definition and character. They come already thinned so you don’t have the hassle of trying to get the right consistency. It’s also great you come with a booklet that teaches you techniques and advice on primers etc which can be transfered to other forms not just Warhammer which it is targeted towards. When I run out I will most likely order this kit agai
This acrylic paint set is a very good starter kit for painting army figures such as Warhammer and the like. It comes with 11 fairly common/basic colours plus a plate mail metallic colour and also a decent sized bottle of Matt Grey primer.
Each small bottle holds 18 ml of paint, also inside each bottle are two ball bearings which are used for mixing the paint when it is shaken. This does a fair job of keeping the paint thin, however if you do find this paint a little on the thick side you can always add a couple of drops of a thinning agent which should thin it down as long as you shake bottle well after adding.
You can use these paints either hand with a small brush or with an airbrush. My nephew has a collection of Warhammer figures which he paints every few years. He usually uses an airbrush to do the undercoat or larger areas and then hand brush for the detail work.
He’s been using these warpaints for the last few weeks and he’s actually quite impressed with them. He hasn’t needed to use any thinner and he likes the selection of colours that are provided. he reports the these paints are bright in colour, go on smoothly and dry fairly quickly everything he would expect from these types of paint.
I do think these paints are a little bit on the expensive side priced at 33.99 (price correct at the time of this review) but that is my only negative. I think a drop of about 10% in price would make all the difference.
Thank you for reading and I hope you have found my review helpful.
Great set of paints, with high quality specification and a generous bottle of primer. They may be a little thick, as my airbrush seemed to spatter with the primer loaded, so might need a drop or two of thinning agent in the cup, although this is a brand new airbrush so it might just need some adjusting.
Highly recommended.
This is a good way to start on your painting journey. Its a large, valuable paiting set that including all the color start with. The way of its design with drops would saves waste and make it more enviourment friendly. A good price and good option for a beginner.
This is an excellent starter set for spray painting. You get 12 different paint bottles which are 18ml each. All of the bottles have mixing balls, have a dripper-like tip so you can control the dosage easily and the caps ensure the paint doesn’t dry out on the dripper (meaning it doesn’t get blocked up and can be re-used with ease).
This bundle also comes with a large bottle of matt grey primer. This is an excellent starting point for primers and is a colour that will work well with the majority of models you paint. It is a 100ml bottle so you will have enough for a huge amount of models to paint.
Overall, the quality of the paint is excellent and the pigmentation is beautiful. You look at the colour pictured on the bottle and that’s exactly what you get which is great. I would say this bundle is excellent value for money.
OK, so it’s very old now, my Devilbiss Super 63* is the first airbrush I purchased decades ago. I don’t use it very much now – I have some others, but it’s still operational and a good one to try things out.
These paints arrived advertised as “ready to airbrush” and I can confirm this appears to be true. They went on easily, without clogging and were simple to clean out after finishing. The style of bottle made it easy to use the required amount. Have the paint ready to go saves time making up the required amount and testing.
I can’t really comment on the colours as I am not into this kind of modelling, but I do wish the colour on the front matched the colour on the bottle. It was very close but not spot on. To be fair I was trying it out on primed plywood, not plastic so that may be all it takes.
The paints also brushed easily, but small amounts dried quickly making this a bit tricky.
All in all a good starter set for beginners – but if I were buying I’d go for the bigger sets.
*Fortunately, I brought some spare parts soon after that have stood me as time went on.
I have some little Warhammer 40000 figurines that need painting. They’ve all been coated with a black under base paint, and I don’t paint them frequent enough really, so I try to limit the number of paints I get to slowly paint them without them drying out like my first lot of paints.
I’ve moved away from Citadel paints and started using the cheaper Vallejo paints, which have done really well, but wanted to try these ones too for a different feel. Now, I wouldn’t mix the paint sets, so I would use these on a separate batch, which is what I’ve done. I’ve dedicated a separate lot for these paints, and so far, these have done well.
I am not using an airbrush though, I’m just painting the figures by hand, yep, all of it, so I am going through the paints faster than through an airbrush I think, since my application isn’t the best, and might be over-applying the paint.
The paint is pre-thinned, which is good, as they can be used straight out the bottle. There’s a large bottle of matte grey primer and 12 colours of 18 ml in this set, which is great for beginners. That said, the price isn’t that appealing at 34.99. At this price, I can get individual bottles with my choice on colour for around the same price from a brand I have used and will match my current paints. So in price, this isn’t attractive and appealing, and the value isn’t that great, even though it’s a nice starter set.
For starters not knowing what colours to get, these will be a good start to find out, but for people who have used paints already, I do not recommend this.
The Army painter colour set is really good, the colours are vivid. Perfect for model painting. I was a bit disappointed through no fault of the product, Completely my fault; I didn’t realise this paint set was for airbrushing not hand painting. Army painter Is a very good brand on worth the money I recommend it
Pros
– Vivid colours
– Nice starter set
– Ball bearing in the bottle
Cons
– Airbrushing not hand painting (not product fault)
The one thing I like about these is you don’t need a thinner. They come premixed with an agitator in them, just pour and use in your air brush. The colours are great for a starter set and have a good selection of colours including bone white. I would say the price is spot on for a start up set like this.
I tend to buy this type of paint individually which of course isn’t very economical so I was pleased to be able to review this starter set.
I don’t paint models, but this paint is great for mixed media work, it creates some great effects especially if you work loosely . I use it with a water spray , with charcoals and pastels and several other acrylics.
This range of colours is ideal for earthy landscapes.
The bottles are prefilled with mixing balls, are comfortable to use, and the paint flows easily.
The only issue I found is that the cardboard packing didn’t work well, and most of the paints had come loose. Nothing major and easily rectified with slightly higher edges.
All in all I’m really pleased with it.
Currently priced at 34.99
Thanks for reading, I hope you find this review helpful.
I have to say I had high expectations when I saw the price of this set, but I am pleased to say that they were definitely met. When it comes to model painting, I honestly believe that the little improvements can make a huge difference in the result, and the quality of this paint has made a difference.
I have previously painted by hand years ago and actually recently purchased an airbrush for a multitude of uses, but mainly to get back into model painting. I was blown away by the paint quality! Each bottle of paint has 2 mixing balls inside so that when you shake the bottle, the paint is evenly and equally distributed to give a consistent colour and coating. This made a lovely uniformed finish to my models which I was extremely happy with.
The paint is easy to load, and the colours are rich and spread far so you don’t need a huge amount or a lot of re-coating which is great. The metallics are great and really catch the light beautifully. Once you are finished with the bottles, they have a great lid that is specifically designed to keep air out and prolong the use of the paints without risk of drying them out.
I did also try painting with a brush rather than the airbrush to see how they performed with this application and they worked fantastically, this really opens the doors for accessibility when you need to use different applications to achieve the finish you want.
The packaging comes beautifully presented, you instantly want to open it and get started! It would make a lovely present to someone as well. Whilst people might be put off by the price, I think you pay a fair price for such high-quality paints that give you a fantastic finish that will last a long time.
These are great, and the fact that I was offered these to review means my husband has finally been able to justify doing something he has wanted to since he was a teen: buy an airbrush for his wargame figures. The paints come in two little cardboard trays inside a shrink-wrapped box. Although the trays have cut out holes that should hold the paints in place, these had pretty much not worked — as all but one of the paints was rattling round loose when I first opened the set. Nothing was damaged, but the supports clearly hadn’t been as successful as they should.
The paints are excellent — a selection of 11 core colours, accompanied by a silver metallic effect paint, and a larger bottle of light grey primer. The paints come in squeezy bottles, with a pair of ball bearings in each to help with mixing. The primer in particular needed quite a bit of shaking to get the colour and consistency to properly disperse, as this had separated out to a very noticeable degree. Because this is a starter set the colours are a bit restricted, you get just one shade of each colour (taken from triads in the wider range), but this is enough to start out with giving the basics for decent colour mixes. Also a good way to try the paints out without going straight to the pricey 60 paint set.
I am an artist and product design student so I am always using paint, whether that be for a painting or for
model making. My one concern with paints typically would be application and quality of pigmentation. This wasn’t an issue for these warpaints by The Army Painter. This set includes literally every colour you could need with several different hues/saturations to chose from. I loved the metallic selection which comprised of several different metals from bronze, to silver to gold.
One huge pro that these paints provide is the ease of application. I had tried paints in the past (which admittedly were cheaper) which required extensive mixing with a thinner, etc. This was a messy task and often lead to inconsistent shades which isn’t ideal for painting models, etc. The paint pours well from the bottle at a controlled rate. You can really see the quality carried throughout this product, whether that be the paint quality or quality of application. The free brushes included are of a good quality too and I could estimate them to be worth about 10. The bristles allow for intricate detailing and smooth finishes.
Overall a great quality paint set which will last a very long time. 5 stars!
Thank you for reading my honest review, I hope you found it helpful! 🙂
Complete novice in airbrushing, but something I always wanted to try out since one of my ex-partner was into it.
Like others have mentioned before me, while I appreciate the company trying to reduce their plastic use, maybe they need to find a better solution for keeping the bottles in place in the box as it’s arrived all thrown in there.
The painting guide comes very handy for someone like me, who’s just experimenting really.
The colours are vibrant, the 18ml bottles should be enough for plenty of experimenting. Especially like the 2 metal balls in each bottles as it helps for thinning and mixing the paints perfectly before use.
The 100ml bottle of grey primer is basically for spraying down the surface to give a blank canvas and start building up the required colours over. It’s acrylic paint, so shouldn’t wash down from the characters at all. The paint is non toxic, but still always should be used in a larger room or a well ventilated small room.
Please note that the airbrush itself is not included just the 12 small bottle and one large bottle. The price seems good value for the amount of paint I’ve got.
The card box they arrived in does not hold the paints very securely as they were all rattling around loose.
It comes with a helpful painting guide for painting models and miniatures if you are new to the hobby.
The paints give a good coverage and I found them easy to use. The 18ml ones have a metal ball to help agitate them and you really do have to shake them to make sure the pigment is correctly mixed.
The grey primer is a bit of an odd addition as the primer colour you use will depend on what your final colour scheme is, so instead of the primer some more 18ml bottles of different colours would have been more useful to me.
The bottles are dropper type similar to Vallejo, which I usually use.
A fantasy paint set from Vallejo has a RRP of 37 for 16 bottles but no large primer so this set is priced a little high for the amount of colour variation you get but Vallejo don’t have the ball agitator which must add to costs.
Conclusion
Overall I have no issue with the paints. I like the colours. I like the ball already being in the bottle so I don’t have to add one. The box design could be improved, to hold the paints better, and a couple more colours would make it better value against its competition.
This truly us a dynamic set for model makers such as my son. He is a keen constructor of Airfix and Revell sets and a very good war themed paint set was something on his wish list.
Important note:
This set does not included an airbrush set. This would need to be purchased separately.
The set contains 60 18ml ready to use nozzle-tops bottles for easy pouring.
Each bottles contains two pre-inserted ball bearings to assist in shaking up the richly pigmented colours to an even consistency. The pains are thin enough to leave a smooth finish, whilst still maintaining that concentrated pigment that model builders desire.
What he likes about this set is that almost all the colours are formed into triads. Which means he can gradually build up the colour, adding definition and shading where he needs to. This gives a dynamic and realistic looking finish to his Airfix sets.
The set also includes a painting guide and a tool guide which a novice would find useful when airbrushing as a beginner.
A set that’s very well put together. However, the addition of a airbrush set in further editions would be a welcome complete set for beginners.
5 stars
The acrylic paints are good quality and this is a good starter set of paints but I feel ait’s a little pricy.
The colours in this set are good, actually they are bright but depending on the models one is working on this is only a very small number of colours available. I’m sure a blood red colour would be a useful one whenevr the word Army is used in modelling.
One colour I do find will be a really handy one is the leather brown as that will be ideal for spray painting the boots, satchels, bags etc. etc. basically anything leather.
The set contains 12 small bottles of acrylic paint and a large bottle of primer and it is good quality but sadly it lacks value slightly, which is why I have given this 4*s rather than 5*s. Should the price come down to compete with similar products then this will be a 5* product however, if this set contains many of the colours one requires then It will be worth buying as we all know what happens with slected sets of things, we get some of what we will use and some of what we won’t and it’s pointless buying a large set and wasting a lot. This set, as it slearly states, is a “Starter Set” and is a great starter that can be built on.
I am recommending this product as although I do find it a little pricy it is a good quality product and the chosen colours are likely to be all used or at most will so they should be little or no waste for one’s money so it is just about good value, not the best value but still good.
A set of airbrush paints designed as a starter set for fantast wargaming enthusiasts, the colours having been chosen to be useful across a wide array of sets – ‘Skeleton Bone’ and ‘Daemonic Yellow’ being two especially memorable shades. The paint are of obviously high quality and come with agitators already in the bottle. so a quick shake and they can be poured straight in. As well as the 12 18ml bottles, you also get a large (100ml?) bottle of matt grey primer. If one then assumes these small bottles sell for around 3 pounds each, then overall this represents very good value: Worth buying even if you aren’t a beginner to have these colors in stock.
Good paint but packaging could have been better.
This is how they arrived (I’m just glad that I have a gently postman who places on the mat and doesn’t throw them or I think they may have split.
The bottles themselves are not that sturdy but it’s not about the bottles what about the paint?
Well the paint is good quality and overall the coverage is good. To dry to my liking it take about 3-4 hours before I put another coat on. This could be different depending upon what you paint.
Overall I was happy with the paint and it’s good for a hobby.
First a big confession. When I got the chance to review these paints I jumped at the chance. I’ve wanted to try Army Painter for a long time. It was only after they arrived I realized they were created for airbrushes, which I don’t have. So, I’ve done this review having used them with brushes.
When they arrived, it was a bit of a mess. They don’t travel well, and bottles were scattered everywhere.
I spent some time putting them back in order which comes to a second, minor, gripe. I wish there was some way to have the paints displayed in an easy to get at, easy to see way. What would have been awesome was some sort of rack supplied (I think the price of this set would warrant it), even if it was created from the supplied packaging. As you can see from the photos you need an awful lot of space to have all 6 trays out on display and quick to get at. I’m also not a fan of storing paints in a horizontal manner.
So, after the (very minor) gripes, the good points.
First, how good is it that they include an agitator! Vallejo should take note of this! I’ve had to buy these separately for other paints. It does make a difference.
The bottles are well made and very similar to Vallejo. My historical favourite paint was MP Miniature Paints (long time disappeared), they were superb for colour and coverage. Army Painter is the same!
Even though these are for airbrush, the quality of paint, pigment and coverage is superb. I tested these paints on a clay sculpture I had made (primed with Liquitex). Just like Vallejo, you have to squirt a bit on a palette and get working. The paint, even though naturally created more liquidy for airbrushes isn’t weaker by any measure in pigment quality and make a great coverage with one coat. I wondered if I was going to have to prime separate bits (like the rocks that had green on them) but the opaque quality of them meant I didn’t have to (so the grey is straight on top of the green!). Also, because they are more liquidy you have more time to work with them before they dry out on the palette.
They make washes very well and can also be used for dry brushing without any issue.
Last thing to mention is the supplied booklet. Its obviously a selling point for other Army Painter products but at the same time filled with excellent tips.
Summary:
I think these paints are expensive. Currently this set of 60 paints is 138 which works out at 2.30 each. In contrast Vallejo work out at about 1.60 each (based on a set of 16 for 26). 70 pence a paint difference.
However, there coverage and quality is excellent, but that price is quite a difference.
Amazing quality! I personally got these to use for nail art. I previously used a mixture of uv gel & acetone in my air brush and wanted to try these instead and they’re great, they dried quicker than I thought they would and didn’t smudge or smeer when top coating or encapsulating the nails. I love that they’re pre mixed and don’t need thinner etc.. it’s also so much easier to clean afterwards than my uv gels were which saves so much time, I can literally just fill and go!
Amazing choice of colours including nudes, metalics, every colour you’d ever need and more in this set whether it’s for nail art like me or other projects you’re definitely covered with this set for colours!
I’m extremely happy with them and would definitely recommend them.
