My family loves this game and there are a generous amount of cards so lots of play time. The only thing I think would improve the game is if extension card packs were available as you can end up repeating them if you play often (of course this is normal and fine with any game) but it would be a good idea to keep the game fresh.
Played this game with a large group of people which is probably most ideal because you need to split into 2 teams. We were 8 players, but getting through the instructions and having to explain to everyone was a bit too much, required a lot of patience and attention. I think the game producers made it too complex, and should have kept it simple. But you can also make up your own rules and play a simpler version, all you really need are the cards, everything else is nice to have.
Purchased this for a friend. Didn’t come with the buzzer so you have to download an app on your phone. I did purchase used but supposed to be in complete condition.
This is a great product and have no complaints about it. The package sadly was torn when it arrived and this was meant to be a Christmas present for my partner so unfortunately he has seen it already. Will look forward to playing the game though looks great.
I love this.
I love love love this.
I always crack it out at parties and it’s a game everyone can get involved in (unless you’re a weirdo that doesn’t like movies).
It also helps I’m very good at this game and I’m a very sore loser!
This is a great game for playing with friends and family of any age – it’s super easy to learn and really competitive. It’s already a favourite in our house and we have bought the expansion pack – which you don’t need for ages really as there are so many films in the pack.
Annoyingly this game comes with a sticker you need to apply for the Blockbuster sign, and it’s possible to stick it upside down. This doesn’t affect the gameplay, but it is a little frustrating. The game itself is fun to play, but does require a reasonable knowledge of films for everyone to feel included. You’re trying to get your partner/team to guess the films on the cards by miming, quoting, or saying a single word clue. It’s a nice touch that the game box is a replica of the video tape cassettes that Blockbuster used, giving a strong nostalgia vibe.
Easy to learn and pick up quickly. Great funny for movie lovers. My 11 year old finds some of the older movies tricky or ones he’s not seen as their not age appropriate. This is our new favourite family game by far. First up is head to head buzzer round for example name “films set on a plane”…you keep naming movies until the buzzer timer runs out and whoever says the last film wins and gets to pick six cards from the movie pile. This contains movies of all types, eight categories in total at random. Keep the three you think you partner can guess and give the hard ones to the opposite team! Three categories, one word hint, quote from movie and Act it out. You place each card where you think your partner will guess the movie on the card from. Sounds a lot but it’s really not. You’ll love the game like my family of four do.
Broke it out with the family at Christmas and we had great fun. Two teams battle it out with a quick fire round so even if you’re against a film buff (my brother in law) your team still stands a chance. My favourite card game company so I’m pleased to have another for the collection.
Absolutely loved playing this game with my family over Christmas. So our ages ranged from 33-64. Even my dad managed to do pretty well in this game that mixes charades, quotes and single word clues (just to add several games we have tried to play in the past have had hilarious consequences when the parental units really didn’t grasp the concept) but this game was a huge success. Can’t wait to try it out with friends
Great family fun but had to resort to phones for timer as the one included stopped working after an hour. Two new sets of batteries and still broken after no fall or mishandling.
The game is very enjoyable and great for movie lovers. It was a bit expensive for what it was but still loved playing it. It comes in a small sized box so easy to store or for travelling. I wouldn’t recommend for young children as they probably won’t know what a lot of the films are.
Guess irs like most, once youve gone through the game a few times, it kind of loses its fun as questions are quite memorable. Great for an evening with friends or one to pass to others to use
Got this as a gift for family at Christmas. We all played it after a few drinks and it was a better game than I was expecting. Was a great laugh! Everyone loved it. Can’t promise there won’t be arguments though
My wife and I are cinema buffs and when we have friends over that like a laugh we always pull this out as we know its a winner. Gets you thinking and really gets you laughing when people are thinking on their toes. Would definitely recommend.
Fun game for any film fans! It’s a great team game with head to head rounds. The categories are varied and there’s something suitable for everyone.
It’s also the size of a video so easy to transport and take to a party.
It doesn’t come with a buzzer but you can download one on your phone (or use one from another Big Potato game).
This is basically charades and movie trivia in one, you’ve gotta know films by name to be able to do well. It’s really fun! But if you’re finding obscure ones or ones you and your friends consistently don’t know, maybe take those cards out and either don’t use them or take them as recommendations for movie nights so you can learn!
Enjoy a movie? Like a good time pressured game? Love enjoying yourself? Love seeing everyone’s competitive nature? This game is for you, I play it with my wife and 2 kids (7 and 12) it’s a little difficult for the 7 year old but that just add to the fun. Honestly this is great fun and you should definitely buy it. This also a expansion with 4 new categories with will extend your game more. GREAT FAMILY FUN BOARD GAME
Gave this 5 stars for being easy to learn, packaging (it’s literally a VHS case so obviously) and “thickness” whatever that is. Great game. Because there are multiple ways of using the cards, reusing them isn’t an issue and still feels fresh. As opposed to knowing all the answers from the first time like with other games like this. Absolutely would buy whether you’re massively into films or not.
I purchased this last Christmas for the family. Ages ranged between 11 years and 40s ish ! .
It caught my eye due too its packaging and the Blockbuster era of the 90s and Noughties.
The game itself is easy to learn, doesn’t take too long to play ( average 30 to 40 mins) and is good fun for Movie buffs.
My teenagers got bored of it quickly but adults definitely enjoy it more.
Ideal game to bring out a couple times a year when the family is over.
Great game which can adapt to fit the movie knowledge of the players, the buzzer really adds to the excitement. However, we are a family of 3 playing under lockdown.
We are developing points based 3 people rules and they are…
All three players do the head to head round going around clockwise until only one player left. The last remaining player gets 5 points
Players pick 3 cards each and they can decide which style they would like to present each card to the other players (one word, quote, act it).
The presenter and the person who guesses correctly both get a point (we need to practice to work on the exact number of points)
Any tips?
Like any family based film quiz this split the generations as the older people were completely unfamiliar with the animations and fantasy type films and the younger generations with old movie classics. However we did enjoy it. Possibly a bit too long but you can tweak the rules
Great game for movie lovers. Even if you’re not a huge movie buff but have seen or know of a fair few it’s worth a go. There is acting, descriptions and quotes and a fun head to head round.
Best for groups
Definitely recommended!
I bought this after seeing Tom and the others play it on Youtube and I thought it would be a great game to play with my movie obsessed friends and family, boy was I right, the rules are simple and the mix of trivia and strategy and dumb luck means no 1 person truly has an edge, The Blockbuster game is an instant classic and can sit alongside the other party games we play when we’ve run out of things to talk about but the pizzas not here yet, 10/10 best card game named after a failed business ever.
Never leave a review for products and this is my first but had to for this as it’s such an incredibly fun game. If you love a good board then you have to pick this up, it’s such a fun and novel idea and just a really enjoyable game so defo worth a purchase and you won’t be disappointed and I will certainly be checking out the other titles big potato games had to offer.
With the Blockbuster mock-box, I was so excited to open and play the game! It brought back memories from when my mum used to take us down to Blockbuster with the ‘parking lot’ and yellow sign! Also reminding people of movies we now want to rewatch!!
The actual game play was extremely fun and varied as the plethora of movies, genres, characters, etc on the cards kept entertaining. Despite the variety of movie knowledge in our group, everyone picked up the game and got involved! You definitely do not need to be a movie whizz-kid to play.
An extremely entraining and nostalgic game!!!
Big Potato have done it again – a fantastic party game centred around movie titles. Easy to learn and hours of fun to be had. Played last night with husband and 2 sons age 23 and 17. Game lasted about an hour though I think mainly down to laughing at people’s attempts to act out movie titles such as I, Daniel Blake and The Evil Dead to name only 2. The premise of the game is so simple but so effective. Hopefully an expansion pack will be rolled out but in the meantime there are enough cards to avoid any repetition for a good while. If you like movies and are old enough to remember the Blockbusters franchise then this is the game for you. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
When this item arrived I was so happy when I opened the parcel. the immediate wave of nostalga was amazing. The packaging for this game is next to none. From the vhs box (With large blockbuster logo) to the fold up blockbuster car park and sign (which act as the games board), I was immediately excited to play the game.
I played this game with 10 people with a varying degree of film knowledge, however, this did not seem to matter. Firstly you start by splitting into two teams and setting up the blockbuster car park board – There is also a buzzer/timer (always fun), 2 stacks of ‘film cards’ and a stack of ‘head to head cards’ – Both teams then choose a tribute to go ‘Head to Head’. This is where the buzzer really gets involved. A ‘head to head card’ is turned over and it will say the category for the ‘head to head’, eg. ‘a film with tom cruise in’. then pure panic and hover hand (over the buzer) sets in as everyone forgets all knowledge they were previously bragging about. they take in turns of naming a film – within 15 seconds – until there is a victor.
next up is the team part. The winner of the head to head gives their team the advantage, they pick 6 ‘film cards’ – which are all just names of films seperated by the genre that film is – and picks the 3 cards they think are the easiest and give the other 3 to the loser. They will then have 30 seconds to convey these films to there team using the following 3 methods (3 cards, 3 methods you can’t use the same method for all 3 cards) 1. using one word to describe the film. 2. quoting the film (what is good here is that you don’t have to use a real quote, you can make up something that vaguely resembles something from the film) and 3. act out the film. This can get incredibly fun and ‘yelly’.
The general consensus was everyone wanted to play all night and it has the option of being a fun party game out at the pub or can be played with a small group (min of 4).
Such a fun game – it’s very easy to understand the rules and play, really perfect for people who love cinema! I love that it has 2 stages to it, one being the “head to head” to get us remembering movies, and the second being the different options to get your team guessing.
The design of the game is very cute, with the nice iconic parking lot working as the board and a nice buzzer – I played a few times already and it was a lot of fun already.
I really hope they release an extension with more cards or even more categories and ways to play, it would really help to extend the playability for longer.
If you are into Movies then this is the game for you.
Brilliant, simple to follow game for four or more players aged 12+.
Two teams will battle it out to be the first to win a movie card from each of the eight Movie genres.
Comedy, Horror, Action, Sci-Fi, Drama, All-time classics, Animation & Family.
One player from each team will try and get their team mates to guess the movie by one of three ways.
‘One word’ – Describe the movie using one word.
‘Quote it’ – Say a quote from the movie or make one up that best describe it.
‘Act it’ – Silently act out the Movie.
The first team to collect a Movie from each of the eight genres is the winner.
I’ll tell you now – I am not somebody who regularly reviews products, HOWEVER – Big Potato Games, you’ve only gone and done it again!
I am a huge fan of a game that is a great ice breaker yet also allows people to come out of their shell and be a bit silly and this game is definitely one of those!
Best part is you don’t need to be the biggest movie buff ever to play which means there’s no arguments at family or friend game nights.
Plus, the blockbuster car park design? Incredible and so nostalgic, not gonna lie – that sold me on buying it in the first place but the game itself has already become a family favourite!
Solid 12/10 game! Absolutely smashed it BPG!!
Had a fantastic time playing this for the first time, and it’s great for reminiscing with everyone about movies you love!
The head to head round is so great. We had a round where you had to name movies beginning with ‘W’ – with you panicking trying to think of a single movie beginning with ‘W’, and your teammates frantically trying to mime clues for ‘Wuthering Heights’, it turns into hilarious fun. The movie round works really well because the winner of the head to head gets to choose the movies first, and so can leave the other team with some really tough ones. Its brilliant trying to figure out specific quotes or scenes you can act out for your teammates to guess.
Overall loved playing this game and can’t wait to play more.
