Great easy deck builder for beginnings, new bits are added into the game as you work your way between game1-7, if your not a beginner at these sort of games start with game 3 the difficulty level is harder. Also recommend the expansion packs adds more to the game and adds a extra player to ply with with the base game.
Love this game. Instructions not always clear, especially when playing for the first time. But totally addictive. Fav. HP characters all in there! Bought the extensions as well a month after.
This game was purchased late 2020 and we only got round to playing it September this year. Unfortunately, some of the pieces from game 1 where missing so we couldn’t play after all. Having thoroughly checked the entire game contents we are only missing the 10x Dark Arts cards for Game1 (instead there where 2 sets of Dark Arts cards for game 7). I’ve submitted a form to the company that makes it and will see how I get on. I’ll update this review (and rating) with the outcome of my request.
UPDATE – Many thanks to the makers of this game for sending me out the missing items. We’ve complete the first couple of games and are really enjoying it. Very pleased with customer service.
We played as a two, and although the game is immersive and addictive, we found it too easy. We won all 7 games, so now we’re trying to find a way to make it harder to play but just as interesting.
The game is fun and, since it’s cooperative, kids younger than 11 are able to play it with some guidance. It’s even worth the work of separating the different types of cards when putting the game away after you’re done.
Negative: It was sent to us with just a thin plastic sheet around its box, which not surprisingly ended up not in mint condition on arrival – with bumped in corners and perhaps the odd scratch. A simple cardboard box or any other appropriate packaging for shipping would have prevented this slight damage.
I’m not a big Harry Potter fan but I bought this for my partner who is, unlike a lot of brand specific games the gameplay does not require a prior knowledge of the subject (but merely adds to it via nostalgia).
For any deck building game fans, I would best describe this as a mix of Dominion and Marvel Legend. You essentially start off with a basic hand for your character (Harry, Ron, Hermione or Neville) and then buy cards to get more spells, items or allies to go into your Discard Pile. Everytime your Draw Pile runs out you shuffle your Discard Pile to create a new Draw Pile, so you are constantly refreshing with the new cards you have bought. Using your cards you have to defeat the Villains from that film (and all previous) before they capture locations, with each Villain having a special power it requires you to be tactical with which order you defeat them.
What makes this game particularly stand out is how much the gameplay and added features adapts throughout the seven years (levels), it keeps it interesting and eager to try the next level.
For me though the best part is that it is PvE, meaning that all players are working together to beat the Villains and teamwork is essential to succeeding. I have played this with experienced board gamers and complete newbies (including my Mum) and everyone has picked it up extremely quickly as it is so easy to follow the turn order.
I would highly recommend to any board game fan but especially any Harry Potter fans, a great family game!
My wife likes Harry Potter, co-op games and so I got this for her birthday. I was a little dubious but it had good reviews which turned out to be true. A large part of the game is buying / using cards to perform actions, very much like Dominion (a game we like too). You also have to manage your health using the cards and try not to die. It’s a little odd that the game is split up into 7 parts (all of which take 30-45 minutes), but they can be played individually and it’s nice that the card deck / mechanics change slightly as you advance through each of the games.
Played this with my girlfriend and we aren’t hardcore board game players but had a great time with this product. The deck building mechanics coupled with new ideas being added at regular intervals as you play through the years is really good. If you are a Harry Potter fan this is great we really enjoyed seeing which characters, spells and villains were coming next. It has two expansions available and fairly good replay ability with different hero characters and abilities.
Only negative is if you are looking for a really complicated deck builder this probably isn’t it.
The game was a present for my grandson who is 11. He found it very challenging despite being an avid Harry Potter fan. It definitely needs an adult, if children are playing, at least to start with. Otherwise it is very good and we are looking forward to getting the add-on games to go with it.
A really fun game, this is one of my first collaborative card building games but I absolutely loved it. I know understand it’s a fairly standard system adapted to the HP world.
It’s great for fans of the magical world, we got really absorbed by it, and it’s nice to play a game collaboratively and talk through strategy each turn.
The longevity is great, with 7 full rounds, and give a bit of a break could be played again.
The only slight negatives are the instructions are ambiguous in many areas, I recommend watching a gameplay video, there are many available.
Ultimately it was quite easy, with some intense moments of peril but we didn’t lose once.
The suggested increase in difficulty level isnt that great, we came up with several options but the sharing would include spoilers so won’t. Once you understand the game you can make your own.
We absolutely love geeking out on this game! It’s a perfect game for a couple instead of watching tv every night! I’ve played it with 4 of my family members too who loved it and it was fun to go back to level 3 to teach them to play. Had to google a few rules but it is great once you’ve worked out a systematic way of playing. Definitely want the expansion packs as we usually win when we play with our favourite characters. It’s harder with more players but we often just play with two of us. Highly recommend!!!
Bought this for my other half for Christmas as we’ve been getting into some other card games and, and I wanted to try a co-operative game.
We’ve loved it, win or lose no game is ever the same.
It’s a fantastic game that is very easy to learn as it teaches you how to play in stages, with new mechanics, cards and villians added every “year”. Adding new challenges when you are ready to progress up between the years.
My only fault would be I’d like to have had a few more characters to play throughout the game. But they’ve released expansions with new characters now.
Those unfamiliar with card deck building games may take a short while to get used to the playing style as you’re not moving a piece around the board as instead you are strengthening your set of cards in order to defeat the various villains that appear throughout the game. The game play is straightforward as there’s only a couple of different things to do each turn.
It’s also beautifully tiered and gets progressively difficult as you move through the games. There are seven games in total (one for each book) and contain no spoilers within each year, just additional characters or items that are added in the books at that point. When I introduced this to my non board game playing ‘Harry Potter fan’ friends the first game is simple enough that they could pick it up easily and were left wanting to continue the game – this is an incredibly moorish game and once you’ve completed one game/book you immediately want to move onto the next. Game 7 is very difficult and a real challenge every time and has great replay-ability as so many variables can change from the order villains arrive to which cards you can add to your hand.
We have made up one additional rule when you play it as when attacking a villain you have to verbally cast a spell – slaying the Basilisk with ‘wingardium leviosa’ has never been such fun!
We usually start with Game 5 after lunch on a Sunday afternoon and hopefully, if we’ve played well enough, we’re defeating He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in Game 7 by dinner! I cannot recommend this game highly enough.
The main box gets a solid 5 stars from me, this expansion is amazing for the game itself, definitely 5 star. but they changed manafacturers between main box and this one and you can tell.
The cut of the cards isn’t exactly the same, which makes shuffling suprisingly difficult.
And the print colours aren’t the same either, when you mix in new monsters with the core box villains, you know when you’re about to turn over a villain or a monster.
Shame really, did put a downer on an other great gateway boardgame!
We have not been able to put this game down, we play every night and have already progressed to game 4. I could not recommend this enough for anyone interested in harry potter or someone new to deck building games as this would be a great introduction and help you learn the rules over time.
I’ve played this several times with my family (9 year old and 12 year old children) as well as with my Monday night gaming group everyone loves it.
Make sure you like deck building games before you buy this, as some people can’t get on with them and this would be quite an expensive way to find out!
The first game (year) does look like it it almost impossible to lose, but it works well as an into to the game. Game 2 (year 2) has a little peril, but is easily winnable, from then on in it is a decent game for casuals and gamers alike, and if game 7 isn’t hard enough for you you can make the game even harder by following the suggestion in the rules. A must for any Harry Potter loving gamer.
Please note, it is fairly easy to re-play the earlier games, and is not like the Legacy games where the game is irreversibly changed.
