I use two or three of these in a Rapidfire chimney depending upon how much charcoal I’m going to use, and I’m impressed with how well they work.
A long match lights these no problem and they burn plenty long enough to get the charcoal lit.
So even though they aren’t exactly cheap a bag of 48 will (in my case) very easily light more than 15 barbecues, which makes these very good value – and they don’t introduce any odour or taste either.
As far as I’m concerned, these are great.
Bought these to use on camp/caravan sites … “no odour’ being the main attraction. However, they work brilliantly, are excellent value, and there is no smell and minimal smoke. Instructions advise using a charcoal lighter/chimney, but I simply laid a couple in the BBQ base, and piled some charcoal around.
Highly recommend.
one stacked up on top of the other under my Starter Chimney and not had a problem at all yet. I did used to be able to get away with using one of the standard Weber lighter cubes previously, and admittedly I haven’t tried with these yet, but I will update when I have. Even using two, for the price I paid and the quantity I received it worked out the same value as standard cubes for me, so happy either way.
These lighter blocks work beautifully. It just takes 3 or 4 of them to light a can/kettle of charcoal briquettes. The time to get the charcoal burning red right through is still as was with wood and paper (approx 40 mins). But the main advantage is that there is virtually no smoke and certainly no unpleasant smell. So no messing about closing windows, bringing in washing, etc. I will be buying these again!
I use two cubes to light a full chimney of coals, one at the bottom and one in the middle of the coals – these are easy to light – not as easy as the ones full of fuel and chemicals but certainly not difficult.
The cubes themselves are really light weight, and surprisingly soft – not that you’re going to spend much time rubbing them i wouldnt have thought.
Overall, I am pleased with these, and I will continue to buy these in the future.
They do say not to bury the cube in amongst the charcoal but just rest it on top but I have had better results embedding the cube into the charcoal. I then light it with a blow torch as access to light it by say a match when covered in a couple of coals is tricky.
I tried these to light the BBQ, they do a great job at lighting the BBQ and getting it going however they do create a bit of smoke for the first 10 minutes, but it does die off and they do the job. The smoke is like burning wood not a BBQ type of smoke, but its doesn’t last for too long.
I would highly recommend these for chimney starter users. I believe it’s average to light not to quickly but not too long for it to catch a light. From my use each single cube burns solidly for 8 minutes before the heat starts to die down. Bear in mind these come in a sealeable bag so no hassle when storing. Only downside after cube burns out it releases quite abit of smoke for some reason.
