HOW TO PLAY WHAT CAME FIRST
What Came First? is quick to learn and easy to play but like any good game it’s a challenge to master. Dust off your poker face and try to bluff your opponents.
Power Rangers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
PLACE YOUR BETS
Partner up, flip over a card and take a guess at the answer. Put on your best poker face and try to trick your opponents. Place your token on the board and then bet on the side of the card you think is the oldest. You can go for big the rewards by trying to guess the right year of the oldest one.
5 extra moves for each right year.
FEELING LUCKY?
Once you’ve placed your poker chips it’s time to check the answer. If you get it wrong and you’ll go backwards around the board, but if you got it right you move around the board (faster if you bet higher) and if you guessed the right year you get 5 extra moves.
BE THE FIRST TO REACH THE FINISH
OLDEST WINS

Since buying this game I’ve played it so many times with different people. It is so easy to learn the rules and so fast to get playing but it will get you thinking and may even surprise you a few times when you find out the answers.
This is such a simple and fun game. We played as a family in teams and it was such a giggle! I’d say any child over 10+ would understand it though might need to have some help explaining some of the options from older team mates – it’s a great opportunity for them to learn too. Recommended.
The questions are so simple yet they do make you second guess yourself and some of the answers will really surprise you we had a lot of fun playing i
Honestly I but a new family game for our (grown up the youngest is 25) family and this across all generations and abilities has hit the spot for everyone wanting to join in better than any game since 5 Second Rule! Its sooo easy to play but easy to add extra bits if you want like betting on the year and if you find extra stuff to use as a play piece and split the question piles loads of you can play! Absolutely loved it. Can’t wait til after COVID when we can do it again!
Great game! Learn a lot and we were shocked at some of the answers! Kept us entertained for hours, comes with loads of cards, could easily get way over 20 games out of it without using the same cards!
This was great for the price, the components are good quality and the game’s very pretty. Only issue is I’ve found 2 of the cards have a mismatched answer on the back. Very good fun despite that though!
Good little game, gets your mind working and surprised by some answers too! We all loved play it. . Only down side is, need to be able to purchase more cards because once you’ve played them you kind of remember the answers!!
Brilliant game ! So much fun and knowledge gained from it ! Sometimes useless knowledge but that’s why it’s fun ! I was affraid that the answers will be too easy but it’s the opposite, I was also worried that once we play we will remember all the answers and it will be one time game but it’s not, plenty of cards there and I doubt you can remember them all ! Great game !
Have bought Big potatoe games in past and this one lives up to the others.Game easy to learn and play.Although not sure how long the cards will last. But disappointing that we already found 2 inaccurate cards, pictures attached, where info on the front doesn’t match the back, here’s hoping we don’t find anymore!
All the family have absolutely loved playing what came first. It’s so easy and fun to play.
The only thing is once you’ve gone through all the cards it’s not as fun to play as you already know the answers. That is why I’ve only given 3 stars for value for money. Would be good if you could maybe purchase other card packs to go with the game.
I ordered this game as there are currently 5 adults at home during lockdown, we have been playing a few board games but wanted something different.
This game was it! Simple instructions, easy to set up and understand and great for all abilities. We played in teams the first time, but then we also played individually ( just found some poker chips to use) , my youngest daughter ( 20) thought she would be rubbish at it, but she won and my husband who usually wins all the games came last ! So it’s a real leveller for all abilities and ages.
We love it, our new favourite.
This is a great game because it is easy to learn and fun for everyone – a mixture of complete guesswork and educated guesswork and occasional brilliance. Basically anyone is in with a chance. The main downside is that you go through the cards very quickly and they will probably only las a handful of sessions. There doesn’t seem to be the option of refill cards. So low marks for value for money.
I brought this game for the family for Christmas.
Easy to set up.the instructions are clear and easy to understand. Good quality board and pieces.
We are a family of 4 aged 11 years to 40 something. We all enjoy this game. Great fun especially playing in teams. Educational too. We have all learned a few bits of trivia playing this. The game does not take too long either.
Love this game so easy to get into and a lot of fun. I hope expansion packs will be available in the future otherwise it will get repetitive. Would of been a 5 star review but found the counter pieces a bit flimsy and one of the questions was misprinted. – supplier aware and is happy to change.
Good product, great variety of questions and answers. Although the game itself is a bit hard to get used to, and the accessories are flimsy. Could easily be used as a card game on its own though…
We had seen this game recommended on the telly and decided to buy it as a christmas present. I like the concept of the game. It is a good game for all the family to play because it does not really matter if you know the answer or not, you can guess. When we played this at christmas, there are quite a few errors on their questions and answer cards which really did start to become annoying after a while. If there wasn’t so many wrong cards then I would have given this game a 5 star. The company that makes the game need to do a better quality control on their product. Otherwise it is a good game.
Easy to play, good concept. I don’t think it’s great value for money as I don’t feel that it’s a game you could play again and again. Once you have played a few time’s, you remember the answers.
I was looking for a boardgame that we could play as a family and this didn’t disappoint.
My 5 and 7 year old daughters had a brilliant time as part of the teams and enjoyed building the little figures that you play as when you move around the board.
My only (very very) slight peice of criticism is the similar colours on the cards when choosing the sides to bet on. Yellow and orange are very close and difficult to see in dim lighting, but again that is me being hyper critical.
All in all, would def buy another board game from big potato! Fingers crossed for expansion cards at some point.
Absolutely brilliant game which we played Christmas night… It definitely opened up debate and even I was shocked by some of the answers lol… Would definitely play again and the brilliant thing about it is that 2 people can play it so me and my husband don’t have to wait for dinner parties or family get togethers to play it….
This was an interesting game for the whole family. It was surprising how many times there was consensus on the wrong answer. Unlike a number of the board games we possess this can be completed in a relatively short period and can be played several times in an evening. There are unexpected tactical elements to the game which only become apparent when playing.
Bought this game to play on Christmas Eve, I enjoyed the concept of the game although I thought that the board pieces were flimsy considering the price of the game. The service provided however was outstanding, product arrived within 24 hours
Really good game, simple and easy to play and great fun for all the family. Only negative is we have now gone through all the cards so we can’t play it anymore as we know the answers. I would like to know if additional cards can be purchased.
Reading the description of ‘What Came First’ – I thought I’d give it a go, it’s not the sort of game that I’d normally buy – but I’m glad I did, It’s awesome!!
This kept a large group of us entertained and laughing for a long time! The questions are well researched, strike a perfect balance between fun / challenging and the gameplay is perfect to pick up and play.
Big Potato are quickly becoming the gold standard for games!
(Also, this would make a great gift for a know-it-all!!)
Good fun game, we actually took it away as a holiday board game as it’s good for a group and it was really good for mixed ages. Gets you thinking and talking and not too difficult! Another good board game by Big Potato!
Loved this! Surprisingly harder than expected as the betting element makes even the most confident player doubt themselves (or their teammates!). The rules were simple and straighforward and the time tokens were a great addition which completely turned our game on its head. I will take this to all our our games nights from now on… I just won’t be on my partners team!
This is another in a long line of fantastic games from Big Potato. What Came First is easy to play and great fun for a group of up to four or even more if you want to split into teams. Hundreds of questions will have you wondering how well you remember the order of world events and there is a nice twist mechanic in the game to keep it fresh too. Would recommend for all, but especially good for a board game night with friends…
Cracking party game for the whole family (over 10 yr olds anyhow!). Also good if you have friends round on an evening for a few drinks!
Reasonably priced and would recommend.
Another great Big Potato game. It’s simple, very quick and easy to learn (there’s nothing worse than spending half an hour figuring out and bickering over the rules of a new game) and despite its simplicity it has a lot of mileage due to the large number of cards and the extra mechanics of the game – the time tokens and being able to guess the exact year for bonus moves.
The number of players is also flexible and the games can be really quick or quite long depending on how much time you have so it makes for a perfect party game.
Highly recommended!
Another brilliant game from big potato. It’s a simple but fun concept which lets you feel superior to your mates with your general knowledge and collection of useless trivia. Doesn’t take too long to play so you won’t get bored. Great to play with a few mates along with some drinks.
