I have just bought my second squirrel feeder of this design.
The old one was 5 years old and showing its age.
I put a brick on the lid to stop a particularly naughty fella from hogging all the peanuts. He took revenge by eating the wood to get at the nuts!
We have 3 – 4 regular visitors every day so the feeder gets a LOT of use.
This is a sturdy design and I strongly recommend it.
Next day delivery worked great so no creature is going to starve.
This item is so nice. Don’t think squirrels site and eat on it. They will come and take away one by one. I really like it to be hones
I love this feeder, it’s the second one I’ve bought. The first one got chewed by a thick new squizzer who couldn’t figure out to lift the lid. I’ve painted it to match the garden but my new one has been chewed too! I think next time, I might put tin foil over it as apparently they hate chewing on foil (so I read elsewhere). We love watching them, about a dozen visit every day now costing a fortune in peanuts!!
Really happy with the quality and value of this feeder, which is on our decking all year round. Very robust and well put together, it’s also stable and strong enough to support the visitors we ge
The box is well constructed and even when full of peanuts, light enough to be securely screwed to a fence post.
I didn’t treat mine as other reviews said they’re ok as they are. However, the lid has weathered quite considerably since I purchased it, causing it to split and warp. It’s also been chewed by the squirrels so a metal covering would be a good idea.
All in all though, a good feeder and other than the lid, it’s standing up to the squirrels and the weather.
It’s better than watching the TV! It didn’t take the squirrels long to figure out how to lift the lid and get stuck in to the nuts inside. They are also less of a nuisance on the bird feeders now that they have their own canteen!
Very easy to attach to the tree. An excellent purchase.
Feeder is sturdy and easy to put up. The squirrels were trying to get the food through the Perspex at the front of feeder so I had to take the lid off. No fault of the product.. just daft squirrels!
I bought this feeder as it looked sturdy – it is exactly as the picture suggests; but squirrels being squirrels… I bought it in October, by the beginning of December my other half had to put a new roof/lid on it (as the squirrels that couldn’t figure out how to open it chewed through it instead!). It’s now got a new piece of wood to the left of the perspex panel, as the squirrels that remained that couldn’t figure out how to open it went through that way instead… My suggestion by the cheapest and brush up on your woodwork skills! 😀
Edited 18/02/23. Needs another new lid after frost froze the hinges, keep the hinges well greased (with something not harmful to squirrels!)
I’ve not hung it up yet as my garden is quite small, but it’s sat on a table, and the squirrel has worked it out. Love watching my new little friend in the garden. It’s great because it means the birds can’t get to his food. And I really didn’t want to encourage the pigeons in… The window helps me see when it’s empty, so then I’ll go put a handful back in. (I don’t fill it up as he’d only empty it and bury them in the garden.)
Glad to see that the Squirrels love the new feeder! Since installing, they’ve left the bird feeders alone and stopped gnawing at them. The clever things worked out how to use it very quickly, and I have now attracted several visitors! Could do with a removable front panel to allow easier cleaning, but my Squirrels clean up every crumb well before the nuts can go mouldy Will order more!
Brilliant. The first order did not arrive to me the purchaser. Amazon were brilliant and refunded.
So the second one DID ARRIVE EXACTLY YESTERDAY. 10th. Pleased with it. Wonder how the squirrels are to self feed once its filled with seed.
Really nice well made box. However after one day out, the squirrels have chewed through the roof. Most of the squirrels understand how the feeder works but others have chewed through the wood to try and get to the nuts! Will need to by one with a metal roof.
Our reds love this wooden feeder, the wood seems just thick enough top bottom and all sides, which gives it its sturdy durability..
Everyday we replenish with Hazelnuts, Almonds and Sunflower seeds.., it’s noteworthy to mention the inside box cavity is always bone dry even on very wet windy days!
The only real downside to these ‘wooden box squirrel feeders’ is that the table stand platform could do with being another inch longer, as they are made rather stuby and short for the squirrels to stand upon whilst feeding… another gripe would be wishing that the cavity of the inside box of feeder was much bigger for more nuts to be stored!!
Aside from that, it’s a great little ‘wooden box squirrel feeder’. I’ve purchased three since June 2021, and they’re all doing the job perfectly.. Personally, prefer the ‘wooden box feeders’ to the metal type variety ones.. The wooden feeders are more natural and look good compared to the cold, hard metal variety type feeders.. All in all, a brilliant little wooden box feeder for our dearly cherished, very precious woodland reds!!
I became a local squirrel off license a year ago and about 8-10 squirrels raiding my garden daily. I have 3 of this on the garden fence. It took them to find the way in a day, but if you overfill it a bit they know how to get in without damaging the item itself. It does the job..the only thing I did to them is added a sticky rubber bump to avoid the lid hitting their hand when they close it.
In short, it is sturdy enough and the visible nuts inside help the squirrels find them.
Quite a nice product. It comes as untreated wood. I did put wood stain on it to protect it. Having read the previous reviews, I also put silicone sealant around the front window. It’s now reasonably weather proof and keeps the contents dry.
The problem is once the squirrels find it, they literally empty it out in no time. So, we tend to just put a few nuts in everyday.
Nice sturdy feeder. Comes ready to fit to chosen place.
First time feeding squirrels to keep them away from bird food. Day 3 and the side of feeder has been destroyed! They clearly don’t know how to lift the lid
The squirrel feeder looks excellent, excellent built quality, very good design…Unfortunately the thing is still full of nuts…So either my squirrels are stupid, or have placed it wrong (half way up a tree in plain sight!?)…I know they are hungry as they still try their best get access to the nuts in the squirrel proof nut holder. 4 stars as i got exactly what i wanted, if i could get the squirrels to explain what the issue was with this feeder, we could maybe work together to get them fed adequately.
Put on fence, easy to hang. Had to leave a few nuts out on ledge to encourage them. My squirrels must be not as smart as the average squirrel as they still haven’t figured out to lift the lid to get more food. They stare at it as if it’s going to vomit the nuts out into their waiting paws and then scamper off when nothing happens.
I’ve started to prop the lid open with walnuts. I honestly think the squirrels are lazy or just cha .
I wait and watch for the furry critters in the hope they master the art of nut retrieval
I was fed up of the squirrels eating the bird food and stopping the birds from eating so I looked in to squirrel feeders. This one arrived within a couple of days. I did the same as another reviewer on here and gave it a coat of chopping board oil before putting it up outside.
The squirrels didn’t notice it the first day so I put a few monkey nuts on the ledge and on the lattice fence so they might get an idea. Once the first squirrel figured it out, the next five arrived and one by one they cleaned us out of monkey nuts within about an hour. They were taking them off and burying them, so I know they have stashes all over. I won’t be refilling it every day but maybe twice a week. Meanwhile, they can nibble the birds’ peanuts, or go and find where they buried all their monkey nuts!
I’ve not cleaned it yet and it hasn’t been out long enough to comment on the weather proof-ness or sturdiness of it.
Nice rustic box to replace last one which was well and truly savaged! It had been well gnawed and repaired over the years bless the little darlings, they seem to think that chewing will eventually get them in. I replaced it in the same place and it was hilarious watching them approach it with deep suspicion before they eventually decided it was OK and stripped it of nuts in minutes. I urge anyone to get a squirrel feeder and put it up where you can watch their antics. Box looks sturdy and has a nice thick plastic window. It should last a fair few generations of squirrels hopefully!
Nice compact little feeder, but plenty of room inside. Solidly built. Just installed on my fence. The 3 resident Squirrels loved it so much they literally started eating the box, until they worked out how to open the lid. I have a mix of nuts and sunflower hearts in mine as those are their go to snacks from the bird feeders. Will need to see how easy it is to clean after a few top-ups. Curious also to see how the stainless steel lid hinge survives in the wet uk winter. So far they’re now leaving the bird feeders alone, unless there’s a queue at the box!
When we moved house we noticed we had squirrels raiding the birdfeeders so we bought this squirrel feeder and bought squirrel proof bird feeders. However the squirrels have turned out to be a little bit dim and have not worked out how to get in. I read in another review that someone had used a monkey nut to prop it open until the squirrels got used to it, which I’ll try. Sadly the pigeons keep pecking at the perspex which is damaging the surface, it might be better as others have suggested to replace this with a piece of wood?
After seeing the reviews of squirrels chewing the wood I varnished it to see if it would help.
Sadly not, the squirrels were chewing the lid rather than open it.
I put some black tape across the top of the lid where they were chewing and it worked a treat.
I also noticed the platform for them to stand on was too small so I added a piece of wood to extend the platform.
I also used a shelf bracket to keep the whole thing more secure.
We have a family of four squirrels, the little ones figured it out days before mum and dad but now they have all figured it out. Makes a satisfying “clacking” sounds when the lid closes and acts as an alarm that they are using it.
Although this should work well, the squirrel who appears in the garden regularly doesn’t seem to know how to use this. I have pulled the nuts onto the outside to try showing him/her but still isn’t using it properly. I am still hopeful that eventually he will get the idea. I do NOT believe it is a fault with the product and once the weather warms up a bit I shall try moving it a bit further down the garden.
I temporarily glued a bit of cork on one side to keep the lid a little bit open. The squirrels learned quickly how to open the top to find the peanuts and I can now take the cork off. I painted the outside to make it more weatherproof and we added a butterfly nut so it can be taken off the tree for cleaning. It was made in the UK from FSC managed timber. Happy with this feeder for the price paid.
This product is well made, has a lid easy to open for the Squirrels! My resident family of 5 Squirrels ALL figured out how it opened from day one! Including the youngsters! It was very entertaining watching them all learn to open the lid to get the peanuts! The biggest and smartest one who I call Mr Morriate, once he had opened it a few times, obviously thought sod this and proceed with all his might, to try and pull the lid completely off and spent some time trying to wrestle the lid off, but wasn’t successful ( Definitely a candidate for worlds strongest Squirrel! )
Great product and the Squirrels LOVE IT!
My only small criticism would be, the adhesive tape used to hold the lid shut in transit, LEFT AN excessive and unnecessary amount of very sticky residue on the feeder, so much so it would have been a glue trap if I had left it on, but adhesive remover soon got it off! However the product itself is perfect and gets 10/10.
This came in a cardboard box, with cardboard securing it within, good – no plastic – always a positive. Nicely constructed, and the Perspex window is stapled to prevent the squirrels removing it – Easy to place on a tree, near the usual feeding spot, and filled it up (It could do with a bracket beneath to stabilise it) and put a few sunflower seeds and peanuts on the little platform. Our resident orphaned squirrel came down, up onto the platform and sniffed around it, took a sunflower seed, peeled and ate it, and took the rest of the nuts. After inquisitively sniffing at the nuts contained within the feeder, he pushed his nose under the hinged lid, and took himself out a nut, and did the same a few times. I timed him. Three minutes from sitting on the platform with the first seed, to opening the lid and removing it.
I like this little squirell feeder box for it’s simplicity, it works. It did not take the squirrels long as to how to get at the nuts by lifting the lid.
I clipped a peg to the box to hold the lid up for a few days with a few nuts on the ledge , so that made it easier for the squirells to find the nuts, along with sussing out how to get their feed quickly.
It serves the purpose , but I found I had to tighten the lid screws especially as the lid was a little wobbly on opening.
The 3 screws that hold part of the lid only 1 was straight, the remaining 2 were mounted slightly off line.
I just un-screwed them and re-screwed them straight because that’s me…. plus I want the feeder box to last a good while.
The perspex front looks good although the top is roughly cut on my box , maybe others may be more fortunate than me.
That is easily rectified with a little sanding down or a little tape across the top.
Now my box looks great and the squirells have no complaints when they dive in the box.
It does the job that I purchased it for but I’d have liked to have seen a tidier finish.
We are fortunate enough to live in a red squirrel area, in in supporting our population I’ve bought just about every feeder on the market.
In my opinion, this one is best!
First, it’s wood. Yes, the metal ones last longer, but who wants to be sitting on a piece of metal during sub-zero temperatures!
Second: one of the things not shown in the photos is actually a HUGE selling point… It has a little metal hook that tightens or loosens the grip on the Perspex front. What this means is that when waste gets left at the bottom of the feeder you simply loosen this, remove the Perspex, clean the feeder, and reverse the procedure. SO much easier than having to poke stuff out with a spoon or whatever!
Finally, to my knowledge this isn’t treated. The vast majority of preservatives on the market are highly toxic – NOT what you want to put food into. Add to that that the feeder is likely to get gnawed a bit by newbies to the feeder trying to figure it out!
A couple of other notes for you:
Squirrels have lots of food in the early winter, and really only need to top up in very cold weather (they almost bankrupted me in the winter of 2010!). However, a very high proportion of the spring kittens die of starvation during the summer. So please do feed hem during the summer!
Make sure your peanuts are certified aflatoxin free, as this fungus in badly stores nuts can cause organ failure and death. This is another good reason for he removable front on this feeder – any nuts going mouldy MUST be removed, as the aflatoxin will be rife!
Finally, while they will be eating other stuff when it’s available, a lot of peanuts will potentially cause a calcium deficiency. If you get a cuttlefish bone you can nail it beside the feeder, and you can have the fun of watching them eating that too! As an aside, I’d wondered about standard commercial cuttlefish as its bleached, so I went on a journey through uk suppliers of ‘native’ cuttlefish washed up on the shore and ‘allegedly’ cleaned. Cuttlefish should really smell of nothing, and I can honestly say ALL of the cuttlefish I got STANK and went straight in the bin, rather than giving the squirrels salmonella poisoning! It’s bog standard pet store bought cuttlefish for me now, bleach and all 🙂
I’m just off now to buy another one for elsewhere on the tree, as we’ve two siblings fighting over the one feeder…
Enjoy your squirrels – they’ll love this feeder!
I agree with the positive reviews, our red squirrels love this feeder although we’d like to find some sort of non-toxic wood treatment to preserve its life. A normal varnish may be too toxic. I’m so glad it finally has a strong perspex front, our squirrels have removed all the perspex fronts in the past and happily tossed them down the hill. Nightmare to retrieve and refit and this is too tough to remove plus its a good thickness. Our middle spotted woodpecker has pecked and stripped our formerly strongest squirrel feeder, but I think he’ll find this one too sturdy to shred. We’ll see. It does seem to be the best of the squirrel feeders and I hope it’ll withstand our extremes of heat, cold and hurricane force winds and rain. Our wildlife do tend to vandalise our feeders, wild pigs tossed our large ceramic bird bath into the valley below. I think this squirrel feeder will last well, let’s hope. The reds, and one black squirrel, are helping themselves happily.
I have squirrels that come into to my back garden to be fed – having spotted one squirrel passing by one day, and being an experienced squirrel feeder in local parks, lured him in with ease. Eventually, his neighbours spotted him carrying nuts away and followed him back, as they do. I now have at least 6 of them coming in at various times of day, and when I am out of nuts in their shells, I put down monkey nuts. Unfortunately, the local wood pigeons have spotted this, and will hoover them up if I am not watching.
I therefore ordered one of these feeders, having read the various reviews and watched Bob’s video, to keep the pigeons away.
The feeder arrived in a cardboard box without any padding or other packaging, but was undamaged. It was fully assembled, with the lid feeling a bit wobbly, but it lies flat when closed. The wood is of a good finish, but looks like it needs varnishing to make it water-resistant.
The squirrels were a bit nervous when I put the feeder out – it sits on a small retaining wall opposite my kitchen window, where the squirrels are used to go to collect their food. I laid a trail of nuts to the feeder, and propped the lid open with a nut to give them a clue where to follow the trail. One squirrel wouldn’t even take a nut off the jutting shelf, but within a day, some squirrels were lifting the lid and helping themselves. I use a small wooden skewer to keep the lid open a bit to give the less adventurous squirrels a hint, but expect the squirrels to be fully trained in a couple of days.
Bought this a few weeks ago upon noticing a few squirrels in our back after our dog unfortunately passed away (Squirrels no longer have to share with a male rottweiler!).
Now without fail every morning the 2 squirrels come and sit on the ledge having a good feed for breakfast with the occasional tussle as to who gets to eat first.
Initially I propped up the lid with a few of the nuts so the squirrels knew how to get to the food. I saw a few people commenting that their squirrels didn’t know how to access the food properly. No issues with that here.
For food I order a big bag of mixed seeds and nuts here off Amazon as the price is a lot cheaper than supermarkets. Also just purchased a big bag of monkey nuts for them.
The pigeons sit above in the trees watching on with envy as the squirrels help themselves to the secured food. The lid also keeps food dry and away from slugs.
Good feeder for the price.
The squirrels in my garden were eating up bird food in a free-standing feeder. This squirrel feeder is now attached to a wooden panel fence pole. I used an existing screwhole but changed the screw for a longer one to allow for the thickness of the top panel. It seems to sit securely even with a squirrel sitting on the platform. The lid is slightly wobbly on my product, too, but in the long run this does not really matter. Squirrels figured this out by themselves quickly. Ordinary bird-feeder nuts are always cleared out in a day or so. I have noticed that the lid seems to have been chewed or scratched on the edge. I don’t think this product will last forever, being wood, but now that I know the design works, I shall look out for a metal version of this design, also available on Amazon, which is a bit costlie
I bought this to replace the Gardman feeder which had rotted and which was warped in construction before I ever put it up, allowing the rain to seep into the base and the sides to become detached. So far I am pleased with the solid construction and the shallow depth, which means my squirrels (red) can eat almost to the bottom before I refill it, so avoiding the bottom layer of nuts going mouldy. I took the precaution of painting it with a clear polyurethane woodpreserver to guard against rotting, as advised by another reviewer, tho’ I can’t yet judge the efficacy of that since we have had very little rain (only snow and wind) since I put it up. I have it screwed to a fencepost; yes, it will move laterally a few degrees, depending which side the squirrels jump on or off it. Ideally it would have 2 screw holes, the second halfway down the nut compartment, to keep it stable – but to do that you would have to remove the 2 staples which anchor the perspex in place and that could lead to the perspex waggling about and breaking. I may decide to remove them so the perspex can be lifted out for emptying and cleaning the box, since the only way of doing so at the moment is to upend the box entirely. If I do, than I will put in the second screw for stability. This design weakness is the reason I have given only 4 stars rather than the 5 which the apparent quality would merit.
