Otto is a man who doesn’t like life and tries his best not to be here but sometimes people want us to stay and dispute his grumpy attitude he is loved
Since losing his wife, Otto Anderson has spent his days keeping his neighbourhood in order and has lost any sense of hope or happiness in his life. When he makes the decision to end his life to join his wife he is interrupted by his new neighbours, a lively young family lead by the very pregnant Marisol. As he slowly lets this new family into his life, Otto finds something new to live for.
A Man Called Otto is both a funny and incredibly sad film about love, grief, friendship and family. Tom Hanks was perfectly cast as the grumpy Otto who spends his days criticizing and judging everything his neighbours do, to much comedic effect. You can see where the story is heading as soon as this new family comes into his life but it’s brought together with such warmth while still maintaining the laughs that the predictable nature of the story can be forgiven. The backstory between him and his wife also plays out nicely to bring us up to date so that we might understand why Otto became the man he did. A funny and sad film perfectly cast.
aking in the part created in book “Ove”, adapted to an American scenario, as Otto. I recommend the book, and it is easy to see how this story translates to the big screen.
And, of course, Tom Hanks taking on the part of a precisely routined grumpy third age man, impatient with anybody who appears lackadaisical, ignores rules and the respect of locality and residents.
Snaps at peopleuntil a new family move in opposite, in the terraced condominium cul-de-sac.
His behaviour remains the same..but is gradually slowed up by the spontaneity of his heavily pregnant new neighbour. She responds vivaciously with honesty, kindness and common sense, seemingly oblivious to his searing bluntness.
This is not a typical American comedy, the film depicts a story of someone we might already know, at least come across, seemingly rude and intolerant.
Which Otto really is in his behaviour towards others.
Eventually it comes to light he is in mourning for his beloved wifeand slowly the deep character of Otto emerges.
Watch the film, thought provoking, and reaopisatiin dawns, that not all grumpiness depicts the true character of a person..there is much more to it.
Watched this film on the aeroplane going to America, it was lovely, the two main actors really play well off each other, great cast. Tom Hanks is always a joy.
This is a lovely film in many ways but will make you weep as it is so wholesome and much like life. I had watched it on Prime but thought my daughter would like it . The story itself rang lots of memories for me which were upsetting but we always think these things happen to just us but in fact made me realise it happens to lots of people. His neighbours are amazing. I loved them all. Would recommend.
We really enjoyed watching this film I had heard it was a bit slow, but that was fine by us! It was better than we were expecting! Worth a watch! What’s not to like about a Tom Hanks film, he always is good
