AcuRite 00795A2 Galileo Thermometer with Glass Globe
AcuRite 00795A2 Galileo Thermometer with Glass Globe Barometer, Barometer Set, Glass/Wood
Reading a Galileo Thermometer and Storm Glass Barometer is Part of the Fun
It’s not just a decorative thermometer, it actually works. Each bulb inside the Galileo Thermometer represents a temperature, as indicated by the metal hang tags beneath each bulb.
The temperature is determined by the lowest floating bulb in the thermometer.
When a bulb is seen floating in the middle of the tube, the temperature reading is between that bulb and the lowest floating bulb at the top of the tube.
If all the bulbs float to the top, the temperature is less than the lowest floating bulb.
If all the bulbs sink, the temperature is above the highest bulb.

Got this to give as Christmas present it was received. Most people don’t have one of these so it makes a wonderful conversation starter and you have worry getting the wrong size.
Exactly what I wanted. Simple. Colorful. Cute. Accurate. Fairly easy to set up. When setting up you can not just fill it up in a super fast manner. It has a Doppler squeeze type fill up applicator so when filling up the blue liquid (which you can make your own color btw, or colorless if wanted I guess), but you need to have your own food coloring as it does not come with any. But anyways, you need to fill the water kinda slowly so it doesn’t shoot up though the small tube on the right. But other than that it was way easier than I thought it was going to be.
The only downfall is that the globe (blue part) on the right can get dirty/dusty inside depending on where you have it / how clean the area and air is in that location. For example, I put mines around my plants near the window and all the dirt and what not from the plants made it look kinda dusty looking when viewing from far away or on an angle. But in normal rooms, normal homes, this shouldn’t happen.
The temperature tube on the right is extremely accurate. Obviously it doesn’t change much given that our indoor temp is always the same. So I put it outside to test it out and within 5mins it changed to the current outside temperature.
The other part (sorry I can’t remember the technical correct terms) but the blue globe part seems accurate for the most part but I’ll have to look back in the instructions bc we are suppose to have a storm, and I thought that meant the blue dye was suppose to be higher up. But maybe it’s just about the pressure in the air(??) And not storms(?) I’m not sure. I’m probably wrong per usual. But this is the perfect gift. Very cute. And it works! And u can customize the color. Just remember to already have the food coloring dye or purchase it as well
I love this set so when I broke the thermometer I had ordered a new set. When the new one came in it had a broken thermometer, when I requested a replacement I had gotten another new set that was good. The awesome part was I had received the 2nd set before I had a chance to send the 1st set back.
Weather and the temperature, I like to watch the Storm Glass Barometer and how the air pressure changes. Currently is deep low pressure over UK starting to move way with heavy rain and thunderstorms. I followed in instructions to add food colouring red to see. Galileo Thermometer is interesting, the floating bulb.
Purchased as a gift, recipient not able to set up until this past week. Came in handy as there was severe weather forecast for our area and it functioned as it was supposed to. Only drawback is the fact that the 2 glass weather and temperature predictors merely sit on the wood base, easily jarred if there is a heavy walker in the house.
An aesthetically pleasing addition to our homeschool room. Kids enjoy reading it and noticing barometric changes to compare with the forecast. The repetition of this has helped dispel the confusion of high and low pressure as related to the height of the barometer. Very tippy, needs to be out of bumping range. Nice wooden base and quality glass. Well-packed for shipping. Maybe slightly overpriced.
Filling barometer is not easy or fun. But it is really nice set when done.. Sorry to say the thermometer doesn’t work on the one I bought. Maybe they will replace it. Hope so.
The box came in slight damaged which was unfortunate since it was supposed to be a gift. They liked it tho. I wouldn’t trust it to tell me the weathe
My parents loved this gift I got them. I tried to teach them that science matters and these work on the principles of temperature and pressure. After many weeks of fascination all they’ve learned is that “there must be some kinda magic to it, they seem to go up and down on their own”.
I bought this item for my husband last Christmas and he really likes it. It is very accurate and fun to watch. Our daughter gets headaches that I think could be related to barometric pressure changes, so thought it might be fun to see if that is true.
Works great and looks exactly as pictured in the photos. I saw at least one lie in the reviews about the functionality of the thermometer, in which it was stated that the beads cannot move past each other to tell the correct temperature. It is true that the beads cannot move past another, but they are arranged in ascending order from bottom to top. They will never need to move past each other in this arrangement. If the temperature rises from 71 to 73 degrees and your 72 degree bead needs to drop to the bottom to tell the correct temperature, the 64 and 68 degree beads would already have been resting at the bottom and would not prevent the 72 degree bead from moving in any way.
The provided wooden stand is real ugly. I tossed that in the trash, but I’m happy with the quality and functionality of the thermometer and barometer.
I gave it 5 stars because it arrived very securely packaged and the instructions were easy to follow. No food coloring was included so I bought some along with the suggested distilled water.
I really appreciated reading other reviewers remarks because I got some good tips:
1. Warm tube in hot water to make it flexible enough to insert all the way to bottom if globe
2. Use a bit of double stick adhesive on base to keep from knocking over glass. I used 3M mounting squares. Size was perfect.
3. In stead of holding globe in-one hand while trying to fill, I lined a mug with a paper towel and filled globe that way. I’m a klutz so this ensured that I wouldn’t drop the globe.
4. Do all of this at a sink and protect your surface with paper towel as there will be drip page.
I just got the set and it’s really pretty and fits nicely in the space I chose for it.
I didn’t add any stars for accuracy because I haven’t had it long enough. The glass balls in thermometer haven’t moved but it’s been above 80degrees F here on Oahu and a bit rainy where I live.
This just arrived yesterday and I was excited to play with it. The first thing I noticed was that the wood base was not a dark brown, but an ugly yellow wood. Then when I took out the thermometer, the nodules were crooked. After I shook it around, they straightened out a bit… enough to look good on the shelf. The nodules have been going up and down with temperature changes for the past 24 hours, so it seems to be working, and it is pretty cool actually. Two of them keep going crooked which is annoying, but after I shake it around (gently) they go back to being straight again. Im hoping this is a temporary glitch and I don’t have to shake this thing for the rest of my life. 🙂 It’s a cute product and I’m liking it so far.
One thing to note is that the barometer takes little work to set up. It came with a syringe and a tube. The instructions say to insert the tube through the glass funnel, and use the syringe to fill it with colored water.. meaning I have to go out and get food coloring to make this work. It’s not a big deal and I’m sure it will be fun, but I just didn’t realize I needed to take this extra step.
So, my girlfriend is a CNA at a local nursing home. She saw this thing in one of the resident’s rooms and was amazed! She thought it was the coolest thing and just HAD to have one! She snapped a pic and sent it to me to find out what it was and where to find one. A few minutes searching on Amazon and we found it.
Basically, it’s a 16th century weather station. The tall cylinder houses a handful of floating balls, each filled with a different liquid, each with a different density so as the temperature rises, the balls rise or fall. You read the temperature on a small metal tag attached to each ball – the lowest one is the temp. Cool huh?
There’s also the globe – which works as a barometer. Just fill it about halfway full using water (distilled water is preferred, to avoid leaving hard water deposits on the inside of the globe) and check the level of water in the tube. The higher the water in the tube, the lower the atmospheric pressure, indication a low pressure system and incoming storms! There’s a small syringe and a thin plastic tube provided to fill the globe.Just wet the tube, thread it into the globe, fill the syringe and squeeze. It takes 4-5 to get the globe full.
The glass sections fit onto a handsome wooden base, with cutouts for each part.
Very cool, vintage conversatoin piece!
I think I may have got ripped off with this. It says it’s a Galileo thermometer & barometer, but I don’t think it belonged to Galileo at all. Galileo died in 1642 so if this did belong to Galileo it would mean that it was at least 374 years old, and the one I got looked brand new. On the other hand Galileo did spend the last 8 years of his life under house arrest, for offending Keith Urban – or was it Pope Urban? I always get those two confused. – so I suppose, with there being limited internet back in those days, he may have spent quite a bit of time dusting and polishing, which would account for the fine condition of this glass thingy. But I’m pretty sure that Amazon didn’t exist in the 17th century, so how could Galileo have purchased this to begin with?
Anyway, whether Galileo actually owned this or not, it’s a pretty stunning looking item that could proudly be the centerpiece of any thermometer or barometer collection. People will be flabbergasted when they see it. In fact never will their flabber have been so gasted. Their eyes will open wide and they’ll say such words such as “ooh”, “ah” and wow. It really does look that good.
One word of warning: although this is a thermometer, don’t – DO NOT – try to take anyone’s temperature with it. It’s way too big to go under the tongue and for God’s sake don’t stick it anywhere else. I lost a good girlfriend that way.
Despite all that, if you use this product in a responsible and non-life threatening manner it works extremely well.
Definitely works, and predicts storms, folks in the office like to peek in and see with it’s doing as they walk by my door. My barometer, though, has condensation inside (I pretend it is clear clouds). I posted a picture: it is your typical condensation (so minus one star) and I’ve even tried swishing the water around to remove it – which it does for awhile and then the condensation comes back. Condensation is on the side facing the sun, whether it is 2′ or 8′ from my window I have that problem. I used distilled water so I wouldn’t get mineral rings inside the globe, as there would be no way to clean it off so maybe that is the problem? Do as another person recommended for filling it – detach the syringe from the tube to fill the syringe – don’t pull the tube out each time you need to fill the syringe. I put the tube in, then placed the globe in a coffee mug (it rested upside down with the rim of mug holding it in position) so I didn’t have to hold it while filling. I didn’t have any trouble with the parts fitting into the base, so though some reviewers did, so not all units are defective. I do recommend that once you’ve filled the barometer, set it in a bowl or other water catching device for about two weeks to observe it and ensure it won’t overflow. It took me about that long to figure out how much water should be in the tube based on the fluctuations of air pressure in my area, and though it never overflowed, there was a time I was convinced it would have done so had I not been there to remove some of the water out of the tube (I rotated the globe and got it to flow back into the base unit).
Looks great on the shelf and that’s all I wanted it for. I don’t care or expect it to be accurate (as it’s not) and the day I’m using this to predict the weather is the day civilization has officially ended.
Thermometer portion was pre filed as it is a solid sealed piece of glass. In a 69deg room the 80 deg bulb is up. But again I don’t care about accuracy as this is just a decoration.
The Barometer is the only thing you will need to fill yourself with your choice of colored water. Process is very simple and they include the necessary syringe. You will need about 1/2 a cup of colored water to fill it and it may be helpful to have a second pair of hands since you will need to re-fill the syringe a few times while holding it upside down. I was able to do mine solo but if you have unsteady hands, bad arthritis, or are getting this as gift for a child assistance may be required.
The Barometer does not have a scale or anything that will give you the actual air pressure. Its really more of a “extreme pressure difference indicator” that will let you know when major differences in pressure occur like what you keep with major storm fronts. A good visual indicator of air pressure for kids.
Two concerns I have is:
– the sentence in the include manual.
“On cases of severe weather or major storms the water may even run out of the spout”
So I hope that doesn’t mean the next time a storm rolls in that I’ll have red colored water all over the place.
– The thermometer sits in a a very shallow milled portion of the wooden base. Nothing but the weight of the glass keeps it planted there. The problem is that it would be very easy to knock it over and break it since the thermometer is pretty top heavy. So if you plan on putting it someplace where a kid can reach it or you could brush up against it you may end up tipping it over and breaking it.
But I give it 5 stars as it looks good and should last a lifetime if I don’t end up breaking it myself.
And if civilization as we know it does come to an end and all technology fails us, then I’ll be the one smart looking guy telling everyone the wrong temperature and that a storm is coming.
