After being highly disappointed with Osprey’s current price hike’s,
leave it to Amazon Basic’s to come to the rescue with a great
carry-on backpack.
Don’t let the low price of $34.00 (which I got the bag for) fool you.
The Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack has most of the functions
of the more expensive Farpoint 40, except for the lack of a water bottle holder.
That to me is not a deal breaker which can be fixed with an cheap
after market water bottle holder from the dollar store.
The one area that shocked me, is how well this bag is made at this price point.
It has that rugged feel that is daring you to throw it down the stairs,
and come back for more punishment. A few reviews have complained about some
of the zipper pulls breaking. Again, this isn’t really a con, when you can buy a few spare
zipper pulls at the dollar store.
This even has a place to store a laptop for the Icing on the cake.
Even if the bag only last 3 years of use,
at only $34.00 your still ahead of the game in savings.
You won’t find a bag with all these features and functions at this price point.
I am very happy withy this backpack/case and use it all the time. initially I purchased a very similar looking bag of different make from Amazon but returned it as it was clearly very poor quality. This one is so much better!…In a different league!
Lots of good features but I needed a backpack style for a particular trip and it was great ( If a little heavy when fully packed and having to standi in the airport queues )
I am using it all the time for UK breaks where you don’t need a wheeled case and think it is great to have the extra outer pockets / compartments that you don t get on a standard case.
It is great that the shoulder straps fold away neatly when not in use.
I love it!
Large enough to pack a lot of clothes. The zippers and compartments are large and open in such a way you can pack a lot of gear. If you pack your clothes in vacuum bags or even ziploc bags you will have enough clothes for at least 2 weeks or more.
Fits as a carry on for every airplane I have tried so far without question, even stricter airlines in Europe.
Highly recommend.
If I was to crtic the product more harshly I would say I wish it had a side pouch for a water bottle , and a better waist belt when walking long distance like a hiking bag.
If you are looking for small traveling carry on that is accepted on airlines , can take a lot of gear and is small and easy to transport, I highly recommend this product.
Good case. Durable and can fit a lot inside. Can get tiresome stood in an airport queue with it strapped on your back like a backpack but is to be expected if it’s full to the seams.
Used this to go away for 2 nights. Had 2 dresses, 2 tops, 3 pairs of trousers, a pair of shoes, underwear and socks, makeup bag, hair straighteners and possibly a few little more things. I’m not the best at packing, so it was crammed, but if you’re someone who packs light or only going away for a couple of nights, this is perfect. The straps were very comfortable, despite the weight. My only concern is the longevity of the hooks that secure the straps, they seemed secure but time will tell.
I was initially a bit concerned that the “Amazon Basics” moniker might imply inferior quality.
However my fears were quite unfounded and this really is a very well made, and practical bag.
You can have it on a single shoulder strap, or wear packpack style. There’s also some straps look like they would do for fastening to a baggage trolley.
Perfect for short trips, as there’s easily enough room for 3/4 days worth of clothes.
For this trip, the bag wasn’t bought for carrying a laptop, however I found that the internal the laptop compartment will securely take a 17″ laptop (i.e. the computer is fully covered and the retaining strap will fasten). This is bigger than the 15″ in the description, and I would suggest Amazon update their advertisement. Particularly when I’ve just returned a supposedly 17″ laptop rucksack, which turned out would only fit a smaller machine.
Overall, very impressed.
I bought this bag as a replacement for my Ebags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible carry-on backpack, which was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It was the best carry on bag I’ve owned but they’re no longer available unless you was a very expensive US import from ebay. The Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack is basically a copy of that bag and I have to say it’s 95% there. The hard-wearing quality of the material, handles and stitching seems just as good as the Ebags version. Zips are not quite as good but good enough. Overall for the price I’m very happy although I suppose I won’t know how good it really is until I’ve used it for a few years.
Great choice for using as a carry on bag for travelling. Perfect size to fit all you need and to meet cabin bag sizes. The multifunctional pockets are great and the zippers /zip locks are located in all the right places for keeping your belongings safe.
Functional and practical, the bag expands in the main compartment for more space and the separate front pocket has extra storage pockets plus a separate laptop sleeve compartment at the back.
The straps can be pulled out when using as a back pack or neatly zipped away in their own compartment.
An all round perfect choice for maximum space when using as a travel bag.
The only down side, the straps have a clip attachment at the bottom – slightly uncomfortable – and the laptop sleeve compartment has an oversize extra padding that wastes a lot of space. Good if you don’t already have a laptop sleeve.
Overall, fantastic value for money and a really great backpack. Highly recommend.
Always very impressed with the Amazon basic bags, that’s why I have a few of them. Build quality is fantastic. I haven’t had a chance to use it on a trip yet but that will happen soon. Looks to have tons of space and to be very sturdy. What else do you need from a bag?
Used this in anger this week. Walked from Euston to Southbank about 3 miles with 3 night work clothes laptop and all the trimmings. So comfortable. Sits nicely in the small of the back. With better shoes I could have walked all day. Superb at any price.
his is a really good backpack you can get a lot of thing’s in side and it is easy to carry over your sholders and I would recommend and buy from this seller agai
I used this on my recently holiday and was quite pleased overall. This is the first cabin bag I’ve purchased and would recommend it to others.
Positives: Nice size, lots of pocket and features, lots of straps and handles to hold, great padding on the shoulder straps, seems to be good quality with strong reliable zips, and a good price. They seem to have taken notes from all other brands and made the perfect bag. Overall I’m happy with my purchase
Negatives: Lots of pockets, which is both a positive and a negative. This is because you can fill the main big inside compartment and then think ‘great! now I can put things in the inside pocket on the lid, the front pocket, and the back pocket/laptop storage part’. BUT when you check you realise the bag is already at the depth limit for airlines with these pockets empty and just the inside compartment completely full. Luckily it’s only an inch or 2 and being a material bag you could absolutely force it into the bag size checker at the airport if you had to (plus if you’re carrying it on your shoulder of back you’re unlikely to be asked to check you bag first). I just used the front pocket for paper and documents in the end as if I put anything else in it would be too thick.
Overall I’d still highly recommend this bag. Great for taking on planes as a carry-on. But it just means that you have to pack carefully and not stuff it full to the very top.
I bought this bag as an alternative to a wheeled case or shoulder strap case for taking on the plane as we have two little boys and I need free hands and comfort. It looks good, is of reasonable quality and feels comfortable on your back
I actually bought this as a “shopping bag” because my main mode of transport is a bicycle and in that it is great so using it for its real purpose as a carry on flight bag should be fine. My only negative about it concerns the plastic fittings used on the chest strap when carrying it as a backpack, they are a bit ‘pants’ which is odd given that all the others on the case are pretty robust. It is not that they have broken or anything it is just that they are rather fussy to clip together.
Buy it! Period!
First of all, I must say – the storage space is HUGE! And it is one single, undivided space like a suitcase, so you can fit large, bulky things in it. So I’m calling this a “Suitcase-Backpack”.
This is basically as suitcase you can carry on your back! It is very comfortable to wear and travel even after you have packed it to the max. (Mind you, this is a fabric-y material, so you can’t pack a 100 kilos in it and expect it to hold.)
A good idea would be to buy those small storage bags (Amazon has those) to compartmentalize this bag, if you are carrying multiple items in this suitcase-backpack.
The size (depth) can be adjusted by zippers to make the bag slim or deep, to suit your requirement.
This is one of the largest backpacks available (46L) – and if you still need more space, then what you need isn’t a backpack – but a Hiking/Mountaineering/Travelling Rucksack or a trunk!
Very convenient; You can carry it in your hand horizontally like a briefcase or vertically like a trolley bag, or wear it on your back as a backpack or schoolbag or across your shoulder like an office bag. You can change the size (like mentioned above). You get a large front pocket with multiple pockets inside to keep things separated and organized.
Quality is top notch: The fabrics and finish are superb. Zips are very smooth. Though bulky, it is still looks amazing – and is very desirable. I bought this for a friend – and I wanted one for myself the moment I opened the package and laid eyes on it. My friend’s friends now want one too.
Still to early to tell how long the bag and stitching will hold against everyday use; only time will tell.
The padded shoulder straps makes wearing this bag very comfortable. There are chest and waist straps as well to firmly hold the bag to your back and that helps to spread the weight evenly, prevent swing/motion and makes it easy to carry bulk loads. This not just made it easy to commute with this, but also eliminated backache/stress.
The shoulder straps hide into a special zipped compartment when you want to use this in “Suitcase mode”
Can’t praise this enough; it’s not often you come across a product that wows you this much.
Features I wish this had: Water bottle holders on sides (for when you’re using this in “Backpack mode” & a laptop compartment on the inside (though there is a zip locked space under the main cover (lid) just like in a suitcase, where you could put your laptop in.
The pricing is very reasonable at 2k – though I was lucky enough to find this on sale at 1500 INR.
Amazon’s packaging/delivery was top notch in line with their high standards. Thank you Amazon, for creating this and pricing it at a common man’s budget.
Good thing about this is that it’s massive. My use case is for staying in hotels whilst I’m at remote clients. This bag easily accommodates a week’s gear. When I’ve got all my traveling gear in there and am at work, I can access the laptop only section without displaying all my personal stuff.
Once I’ve got to the hotel and dropped my stuff off, I then use the compression straps to cinch the rucksack down and make the bag look more like a regular laptop bag.
Quality wise this seems fine. It’s not the most high end product, but for occasional use it’ll be ok.

CONS:
– DOES NOT include hide-away water bottle compartment or key ring clip, as described on the listing
– Some loose threading here and there, and minor quality issues
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
My wife and I travel frequently (we have Southwest Companion Fly Free) on weekend trips across the state (often 3-4 night trips). I have been somewhat addicted to finding the best carry-on size travel bag/backpack. A few months ago, I purchased the eBags eTech 2.0 Weekender Travel backpack for my wife and myself, and I recently purchased the AmazonBasics backpack as well for my most recent two trips to see how they compared. Here are some of my notable comparisons:
**DESIGN & ORGANIZATION**
If I am not mistaken, eBags 2.0 started selling on Amazon towards the end of 2012 and has only had minor revisions since then. The design focuses on maximizing the amount you can carry within a bag that still fits most standard “carry-on” size specifications (which is usually 9x22x14). It utilizes hide-away backpack straps (they tuck away into a zippered compartment), a handle on the horizontal and vertical side of the bag, and a suit-case style main compartment and zipper opening for easy access. This has been a winning combination, and I have found this to be one of the most efficient designs for easy travel and maximum storage (better than clam-style zippered opening backpacks, in my opinion). With the use of packing cubes, my wife and I easily pack for 4 to even 5 night trips with both backpacks. In the attached picture showing the backpack filled, I easily packed two medium-sized packing cubes carrying 2 pants, 3 shorts, 1 belt, 6 t shirts, 2 button shirts, and 2 long sleeve shirts; one small packing cube carrying 6 socks, 6 underwear; one pair of shoes; toiletry bag; lightweight jacket in the mesh compartment on the lid; laptop w/ charger and documents; chargers; sunglasses; Kindle; battery pack; and earbuds. With that said, AmazonBasics released this backpack in September 2016, and clearly copied/mimicked almost the exact design of the eBags 2.0 in nearly every respect (AmazonBasics has all the features described directly above as well).
The notable differences is that the AmazonBasics backpack has a dedicated zippered laptop storage compartment placed right on the back (best design for weight distribution because it keeps the weight closest to your body), zippered expandable storage option (unzip to expand the dimension of the main compartment by 10%, or leaved zipped to keep the backpack more compact; refer to attached picture), and has clips that allow for shoulder strap carry. If you want to carry a laptop in the eBags, you either have to place it in the front zippered organization compartment or in the main storage compartment (both are not the most ideal since weight is either distributed on the furthest point away from your body, making it feel heavier; or if in the main compartment, it’s a pain to open it up and remove it for Airport Security). However, the eBags has a slightly better designed front storage area that utilizes: elastic cinches on its pockets (when travelling, it keeps the contents placed in these pockets in place; while with the AmazonBasics bag, I noticed that my items would easily slide out of the pockets during travel), a larger variety of pockets, and a key clip (the listing claims AmazonBasics backpack has a key clip, but it definitely does not). Both backpacks utilized a zippered mesh compartment located on the lid-side of the main compartment, but if you look at the included pictures, eBags has it extend the full length to maximize the size, whereas AmazonBasics for some odd reason has it cut off nearly 5 inches short of the full length. I see no point in why AmazonBasics decided to do that because it’s just lost space.
VERDICT:
Draw. AmazonBasics has the well-designed padded laptop compartment, zippered expandable storage option, and shoulder strap capabilities, but eBags has the better designed front zippered organization compartment. Subjectively, I prefer the AmazonBasics backpack because it is important for me to carry my laptop with me and have the option to use a shoulder strap, while my wife prefers the eBags because she prefers the better-designed front zippered organization compartment and is fine always using the backpack straps.
**WEIGHT AND COMFORT**
AmazonBasics backpack weighs slightly over 3 lbs, while the eBags weighs slightly over 2 lbs. Honestly, the difference in weight is quite minimal when the backpack is actually worn, and I did not notice that the AmazonBasics bag was slightly heavier.
With respect to comfort, the AmazonBasics backpack has slightly more cushioning in the backpack straps, and it adds cushioning along the entire length of the bag that rests on your back. The eBags backpack does not provide any real cushioning for your back, and while the shoulder straps are still comfortable, it has slightly less cushioning. However, the eBags has much more cushioned and well-designed side handles (the handles on the vertical and horizontal sides of the bag). eBags uses elastic under each handles to always pull the side handles closer to the bag (refer to attached pictures), and pads it with a soft neoprene. AmazonBasics uses the same nylon covering the entire bag over its handles, and you can feel the plastic material of the handles beneath. Both backpacks have adjustable sternum straps, and simple nylon straps that can be attached to the bottom to be used as waist straps.
VERDICT:
AmazonBasics slightly edges out eBags here. With the slightly more cushioned/padded backpack straps, and cushioning along the length of the portion of the bag the rests on your back, the AmazonBasics backpack is slightly more comfortable to wear. The eBags has better designed and more cushioned side handles, but ultimately these travel backpacks are made to be worn as backpacks, not primarily carried by the side handles.
**QUALITY**
AmazonBasics describes the material used as “durable polyester”, while eBags states that the material used as “420D & 1680D Nylon”. Nylon is generally a stronger & more durable material than polyester, and the 420D & 1680D Nylon rated materials used by eBags is highly rated/reviewed for its quality and durability. Based on feel and appearance, the Nylon material on the eBags backpack is of higher quality than AmazonBasics.
Additionally, eBags uses higher quality components and materials on many of the finer details of the backpack, such as: Clips that attach the bottom shoulder straps to the backpack (has a cleverly designed release mechanism outside of the clipped area to allow for quick release); seams on the shoulder straps are sealed & hidden (AmazonBasics uses the simpler method of placing a separate piece of material that is stitched over; refer to picture of the shoulder straps); YKK zippers with a lifetime warranty (YKK are like the gold-standard for zippers; AmazonBasics uses strong & quality zippers, but not quite as nice as YKK); and quality side handles with neoprene padding and elastic pull-back mechanism (AmazonBasics wraps its side handles in the same polyester used for the rest of the bag, and the hard plastic of the handle can be felt). Lastly, I noticed that the AmazonBasics backpack had a few loose threads here and there, and somewhat sloppier stitching/finishing (refer to attached picture).
VERDICT:
eBags wins here when it comes to quality materials and craftsmanship.
**VALUE**
eBags is very reasonably priced at $99.99 (occasionally goes on sale too) for the quality & craftsmanship that you get with the bag. eBags also has an excellent reputation for customer service and warranty. The AmazonBasics backpack currently retails for $49.99, which is a steal.
VERDICT:
AmazonBasics takes the cake when it comes to value. eBags backpack is well-priced and uses some higher quality materials & craftsmanship, but the AmazonBasics backpack is literally 1/2 of the retail price. eBags is a great price at $99.99, but AmazonBasics is a steal at $49.99.
**CONCLUSION**
Both backpacks are incredibly impressive with respect to design, organization, comfort, quality, and value. You honestly cannot go wrong with either backpack, and both are excellent choices for your carry-on travel bag needs. Each backpack has slight pros/cons as compared to the other, and I wish I could combine some aspects of both to create the perfect combination. If you want slightly higher quality materials, durability, craftsmanship, and a better designed front storage compartment–and you do not mind not having a shoulder strap-carry option or a dedicated laptop storage compartment near your back–then eBags is a great overall choice for you. But if you want slightly more comfortable shoulder straps & back-cushioning, shoulder strap-carry option, dedicated laptop storage compartment near your back, zippered expandable storage option, and an unbeatable price; then AmazonBasics will be the travel backpack for you. To prove my point: my wife opted to keep the eBags because she liked the overall quality more, thought it was plenty comfortable, and did not mind that it lacked a dedicated laptop storage compartment near the back. I opted to go with the AmazonBasics backpack because I like having the option to carry the backpack on a shoulder strap, and I love having a dedicated laptop storage option near the back.
**For the attached pictures, the olive backpack is the eBags and the black backpack is the AmazonBasics. I will update this review after my wife and I travel some more!
This is the perfect dimensions to make most airlines happy when it comes to carry on luggage. It’s soft, so can be filled easily and still fit into tight spaces. It’s got a lot of pockets and as a rucksack is practical.
It is though rather heavy. Considering airline are starting to not only restrict carry on size but also weight, to have a bag that weighs over 2kg before you even out anything in it does limit its appeal somewhat.
As with all the Amazon basics kit I’ve tried, it’s very well made for the price and has a quality finish.
All in all very good – but wish it was just a little bit lighter, hence 4 stars.
Being an occasional flier and not one that wishes, or needs, to pay for hold luggage, I like to maximise the space allotted to cabin luggage. Airlines have a standard size of carry on case that they will accept, dimensions to which this one has been designed. If you you are travelling with just the one bag, then this will satisfy check-in staff.
A visual inspection of the case reveals no obvious flaws, no loose stitching and it looks reasonably tough. It is a soft bodied bag, so won’t provide lots of protection to what’s inside. I’d say it could take a fair amount of rough handling before sustaining damage.
Besides the main compartment, there is another compartment that could take a laptop and is further subdivided with a few pockets and pen holders. The flap to this secondary compartment also has a zip that opens into a pouch. The main compartment has a zipped subdivision, separated by webbing material – the sort of place I stick worn socks and underwear on the return journey. The depth of the main compartment can be increased with the use of another zip.
The case has standard backpack fittings, these, with the padded back are comfortable and secure around the chest. These are adjustable, so would fit most people. There are two handles and a detachable shoulder strap, so the case needn’t be carried solely on the back. There are no wheels or extending handle, this is pretty much a backpack in carry on case form. Adjustable side straps hold the case and contents securely together.
The only disappointment is the lack of padlock holes on the secondary compartment’s zip pulls. They are present for the main compartment and as the more expensive things are more likely to be carried in the other one, I wonder at the omission.
Aesthetically, the case looks serious and functional, with nothing in the way of adornment.
This is a versatile and spacious backpack, that neatly fits into the size guidelines for carry-on luggage. As supplied is is compressed somewhat by a central zip and compression straps – loosen these up and unzip the zip, and it concertinas out to full carry-on size. It has a largish front pocket (complete with internal pockets) for storing paperwork, pens and smaller items, a padded rear compartment which would easily fit a 17″ laptop, and a HUGE central compartment (with internal mesh pocket) for clothes and everything else.
All sorts of carrying options are catered for – there are handles on two sides, making it easier to get out of an overhead compartment; there is a detachable shoulder-strap; and of course there are backpack straps (which can be stored away inside their own zip-up compartment when not in use). The backpack straps include a chest belt – essential for a backpack of this size.
My normal carry-on bag is a Tom Bihn Aeronaut – which is absolutely unbeatable – but this Basics bag provides a really good budget alternative.
This is a good value travel bag, which has enough different pockets and sections to cover just about any occasion. Whether you’re using it to travel to work or school, or for a weekend break it’s got everything you need. It’s very spacious, enough to carry a laptop or lunch box, or a change of clothes, with enough small sections for phones, medicines, toiletries etc.
The material it is made of looks solid enough to last too. It’s as good as a brand name bag and probably a lot cheaper.
This is a really spacious backpack and there is an zipper which , when unzipped increases the holding space by what must be at lease 1/3.
It has plenty of space for a large laptop and good padding. It would do as carry on for any journey, even a long one. At first its many straps and clips are a bit confusing but I worked my way through them and they make sense are and better by far than having too few..
I am an elderly woman but it fits on quite well and is comfortable to carry ….maybe a little too heavy which is why I gave it 4 not 5 stars. I really should be a lighter weight materiel . that said it is very , very strong and will last forever I think. All together it is a great piece of kit and I can use it as a laptop briefcase and suitcase in one. Plenty of pocket are a must for me and this has them. I am really growing to love it.
