I bought this for a Raspberry Pi 4 I use as my main FTTP router. It works at the maximum speed I have signed up to (slightly over 500Mbps; I should have probably tested it with iperf3 on the LAN side but too late now, router already configured). Note that if you use OpenWRT, you’d need to install the kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179 package for this adapter to be detected as a network interface.

It probably works in Windows too.

It really is Gigabit. There are a lot of fakes out there.
lsusb shows … Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet, so the ones I have use the AX88179 chip set.
I use three of these in my router.

For extra value for money, look in Amazon Warehouse. They may not be provided with the driver CD.

I have a laptop with no inbuilt ethernet and this allows me to get high speed internet connection on ethernet. Works well and is close to being as fast to native ethernet.

These will work on Windows, Mac and Linux I am sure. They are USB3 based but have a RealTek chipset inside.

I purchased them to use in my homelab with ESXi7/8. They work fine with the VMware supported Fling driver.

    Cheap as chips.

Ethernet adaptor that just works. The product is well made and works well. Easy plug and play. Connected to my laptop and windows 11 picked it up quickly and without any configurations. The metal construction makes it perfect to carry around without worrying that it will fall apart. Now I can take full advantage of my Gig Wi-Fi speeds. Recommend.

With newer Laptops not coming with RJ45 connectivity, this is a must! Not everyone has good WiFi if at all!! Especially if you’re on site and need Ethernet for diagnostics on a switch…

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis adapter does work on latest version of macOS (both Apple Silicon and Intel) you just need to install AX88179 kernel extension driver

The one i used was on plugable.com there USB3-E1000 ethernet adaptor uses the same AX88179 chipset as Amazon, run the installer package that will install a app called “ASIX_USB_Device_App” open this app and click “Activate” you’ll need to authorize kernel extension installed via “Security & Privacy” in System Preferences click “Allow”. now just do system restart it should be working

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with macOS 12 Monterey once you installed kernel extension drive

It’s a USB-A ethernet port which works… not much more to it. If you need one I would recommend. No configuring needed and we’re using to hard wire in an Nintendo Switch as we have really bad WiFi. As its plugged into a Switch dock, it’s not regularly unplugged and transported so cannot comment on durability, but seems good enough.

The driver software on the supplied disk was incomplete (for Windows 10 anyway). Had to get the driver from the internet then all was well. There are instruction on setup notes which guide you to the online driver software.

Great device. I have a Realtek 2.5GB on my motherboard and there’s been known problems with the chipset killing your network if you use the utp connection (Torrent) protocol. In the end I purchased this and it’s been great. No drivers required, swapped the ethernet from my onboard and it’s been great. No more downed networks.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI bought this to get round an issue with my laptop’s WiFi card and despite the official description implying it wasn’t suitable for Linux, i saw others had suggested it did work and took a chance. Fortunately it does work perfectly fine on Arch Linux straight out the box, no fiddling or installation of anything required.

I like that it’s compact, well made, has sufficient useful functionality (ie it works to connect to ethernet, there are those typical leds that flash to indicate activity/connectivity but nothing else) and most of all it works on Linux!

I don’t like that the instructions and the official description on Amazon both give the impression it isn’t suited to Linux. Obviously there are numerous flavours of Linux so some may have problems, but why Amazon can’t use some catch all language that at least suggests it’s often possible to use it with Linux would be trivial and much better than having to have customers delve into reviews like this one and others online for a non-official answe

Although a driver disk was included it was not required. Plugged into to USB port, ethernet cable connected. Total installation time less than 5 seconds. Picked up (on Windows 11 no less!) instantly and checked out a sniff faster than my old Intel connector. Amazing!

Have setup and used this on Windows 7 and Windows 11. Works perfectly on both and delivers my normal internet speed of 800+ Mbps. I was sceptical as this was cheaper than all the alternative brands but I need not have worried. Ignore the bit of the description about the max speed, that’s a nonsense if you’re plugged into USB3 and it will be the Gigabit ethernet that caps out before the USB.

Windows 7 – had to install via device manager (after connecting to USB) and pointed the browse for driver function towards the correct folder on the CD

Windows 11 – the device automagically installed as soon as plugging it in.

    10ish well spent.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI originally thought that I’d made a mistake after plugging this in to get an ethernet connection on my macbook pro!

I plugged it in and the mac just wouldn’t recognise it. I had a look at the description of the item again and noticed that it said that it didn’t support mac. Anyway I had a quick search on google and I found an article about the chipset used in this dongle, on a mac forum. Someone had linked to the most recent driver set for the dongle! After installing I was able to use the device.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWorks well on Windows 10 – but make sure you plug the other end of the network cable into the LAN port on your router! I plugged it into the WAN port by mistake and wasted an hour trying to solve why the network adapter was not being assigned an IP address by my router – the error that Windows displayed was “ethernet 2 does not have a valid IP configuration”.

    Likes:
    – Plug and play with Windows 10. It automatically detected and installed the correct driver.
    – Has built in LED status lights to indicate connection and data transfer
    – Well built

    Dislikes:
    – Driver is only included on a CD – no good if you do not have a CD drive and your OS does not recognise it. The install instructions do say the driver is available for download on the product page but I have not been able to find it
    – The info included is minimal – only covers driver install, no info on the product (e.g. what the status lights mean; troubleshooting).

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo at the start of the pandemic, a lot of my colleagues had been sent a pc home, so we can WFH if needed.
I wanted to use my own laptop, as my flat is relatively small and I did not have a place for a new PC. The problem was that even with 200MB connection (as if it ever reaches that) the wifi kept disconnecting or the bandwidth was unsteady and i was suffering from poor connectivity.

The second problem was that my laptop, being relatively new, has no Ethernet socket.
This little cable adapter was recommended by my IT guy, and works like a charm. The laptop (Lenovo Yoga) automatically recognizes the port, and prefers it over the Wifi with no installation requirements or driver downloads.
The bandwidth is steady, and as long as Virgin remains steady I am seeing 150 MB with no disconnections.
Highly recommended if u need a cheap enough solution for connecting to your router directly.

I had bought a similar product from Ebay which was much cheaper but it functioned poorly. The price of the Amazon accessory is high I feel but it works well on a Windows laptop but does not work on an Mac. I had to return one to Amazon (Bought 2 of these)

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’d previously 1-starred this, and I’m updating based on how the situation has changed.

This product has served me well throughout lockdown and it works well – I’m on a 2015 MacBook Pro in a part of my house that doesn’t have great Wi-Fi, so this has been invaluable.

For a while, this wasn’t compatible with Big Sur. They’ve since fixed it, even if it took them quite a while.

If you’re worried about it not working with the latest MacOS and its tighter restrictions on drivers, don’t worry – it does. Now.

I purchased this to get a wired connection to my PS4 from my PC through a VPN. Long story short it works without a single fault.

The product comes packaged securely in a small cardboard box, in anything I think it’s a slight waste of cardboard but there was no damage to the product so does its job. With it you get a disc for the device drivers, this wasn’t needed as with Windows 10 it was truly ‘Plug & Play’.

Don’t be put off by the fact that it says ‘Amazon Basics’, it feels really sturdy and looks quite tidy, the small polished plastic section even comes protected.

If you’re looking for an additional Ethernet port i wouldn’t hesitate to get this!

I mainly bought this for my switch to be wired in docked mode and it worked! I was a bit worried if it was going to work but to my surprise it did. The only negative about it is that the wire is too short for the switch and it just sticks out but ot isnt too much of a problem imo. Another thing is the price, for 10 pounds it’s great value mainly because of its sturdy build and actually working properly with the switch. I tend to get 100mbps because well, that’s what my package is so it should mainly run really fast if you’re internet is faster than mine but overall just as good as the hori one the only difference hori is just overpriced imo. In short buy this one if your using it for a switch because it works.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI recently purchased a new Razer Blade 15 Advanced laptop which unfortunately doesn’t actually come with a built-in Ethernet port. For day-to-day use I don’t actually need an Ethernet port because the wireless performance on the laptop is excellent but the recovery disk for my backup software, Acronis True Image, doesn’t seem to support Wireless and in the event of needing to recover from backup I would need an Ethernet adapter.

The adapter arrived well packaged in a cardboard box and also came with a driver CD. For Windows 10 I didn’t actually need the CD and Windows detected and installed the USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter as an ‘ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter’. The adapter has a short moulded USB 3 Type A plug and lead that connects into a small metal cased box that houses the Ethernet port. The Ethernet port also has the usual orange and green LEDs for link state and connection speed.

So far I’ve been delighted with this Amazon Basics USB 3 to Ethernet adapter. I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of ‘ASIX’ as a chipset manufacturer but I’ve been really impressed with the performance of this one so far. In Windows, file transfers alone consistently exceeded 100MB/s for large files and the latency is also very low. The adapter does not seem to get warm, even after heavy usage. The best thing for me is that the Acronis True Image USB recovery disk also recognises this USB Ethernet adapter and allows me to backup to/restore from to my NAS perfectly.

A lot of the negative reviews for this product seem to be around compatibility (or lack of) with MacOS so I cannot comment on that, but I’ve had absolutely 0 issues with this and Windows 10. Some users also said their adapters died unexpectedly after a short amount of time. If this turns out to be the case for me then I’ll certainly update my review.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with this USB to Ethernet adapter.

    Pros:
    – Excellent value
    – Works perfectly with Windows 10 (no drivers required)
    – LInk state/connection indicator LEDs
    – Feels well made with the Ethernet port enclosed in a metal chasis
    – Excellent performance (consistently more than 100MB/s on large file transfers across a gigabit LAN)
    – Works perfectly with Acronis True Image recovery USB/CD (outside of Windows environment)

    Cons:
    – Honestly, none

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent USB 3 to Ethernet adapte

As the title states, this is a very simple product that has a simple purpose, allowing a computer to connect to a wired network. For a faster connection, it may be worth spending a little more money and purchasing the adapter that is USB 3.0 compatible. I currently use this for my job in the IT industry. As my laptop did not come with an ethernet port, I needed to purchase this adapter to allow me to connect my laptop to customers networks. The adapter can easily be stored in any bag with reasonably sized pockets, although do be careful not to loose it as it can be misplaced or lost very easily. Furthermore, connecting the adapter to my computer for the first time, within 30 seconds I was connected to the wired network I was working on, no driver installation should be required. Plug in and play. Adapter is only essential if you are looking to connect a digital device to a wired network.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersPurchased this for use with Nintendo Switch as the official ethernet adapters are expensive and in short supply. It works perfectly for that purpose, just be certain to purchase the USB 3.0 version and plug it into the USB 3.0 port on the Switch dock – that’s the one at the back behind the little hatch, where the HDMI and USB-C ports are. Once you’ve connected it and your ethernet cable, you’ll need to navigate through your Switch’s network settings to select wired connection, but that’s all the setup it requires.

Be aware that while perfectly usable, the cable is too short to comfortably extend beyond the gap in the hatch. It’s cumbersome to get the hatch to close, and the device will be left jutting out awkwardly. It’s inelegant but functional and acceptable for the price and ease of use.

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersI had read that the Ethernet port on the Raspberry Pi Model 3B was slower that the Model 2 and that a USB adaptor would be quicker. There were a few choices but I plumped for this one based on other reviews and I’m glad I did. I plugged it into the Pi and it worked straight away with no need for configuration. I then checked the network speed at got 215 Mbps through the USB compared to 95 Mbps through the Ethernet port.

If you’re interested in how I checked the speed here are some details. I tested the speed between the Pi and my windows laptop using iperf3. I connected them directly using a Cat 5e Ethernet cable. In fact, if I tried to do the test by having both connected to my broadband router I got a connection denied because of the firewall on the router.
To install iperf3 on the Pi type: sudo apt-get install iperf3
For windows search for iperf3 (I can’t include the url). This is a zip file that you open and then just run exe file
iperf3 uses a client server mode and I used the PI as the server. On the Windows client side you need to know the server’s IP address. On the Pi type ifconfig. You will see two Ethernet addresses: eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the Ethernet port, eth1 is the USB port – these have different IP addresses
    On the Pi type:
    iperf3 -s
On Windows, open a console window and cd to the directory where you unzipped iperf3 and type:
    iperf3.exe -c
    i.e. iperf3.exec -c 169.254.215.101
Make sure you use the right IP address for the interface you are using (eth0 for Ethernet, eth1 for USB)
Reconnect the cable to the other part, restart the server on the PI and try again.

I purchased this as my aging laptop only had a 10/100 LAN card and I have Fibre Optic to the home Broadband with 300Mbps download available. However after installing the drivers from the CD that came with it I found I wasn’t getting the results I expected. I am running Windows 10. However after some research on the internet I found some updated drivers, downloaded those and connected it to my router with a CAT 7 cable (recommended) and the adapter now does the job very well. Now I have to replace my laptop as it is struggling to keep up!
