Initially bought to stop being bored when ill. Found this game to be addictive, plenty to do as it is single player only. Fully open world with a lot of playing time. If you’re 50/50 to buy I say buy it.
I spent 70 hours playing this game and would rate it as one of the best games on PS4. It’s an exceptionally detailed open-world game with so much to see and do. I found the setting of ancient Greece was perfect and enjoyed the blend between history & myth. The RPG elements are a welcome addition to the AC series, the fighting mechanics felt easy to pick-up-and-play whilst being difficult to master, and the world created is captivating. As a caveat, if you’re short on time then this game might not be for you, it requires minimum 40-50 hours to complete.
AMAZING! Got this game for 25 and I have recently completed the game. I have put in 50+ hours.
The Greek world is varied with massive number of unique places to visit, story is exciting and having a boat to travel the world is great. One issue with the story being that it ends suddenly and is anti-climatic
The gameplay is smooth and fun with little issues and for the price is a great game and great value for money
Love this game. This isn’t assassins creed as we know it. It’s been given a huge overhaul. The graphics are sensational, I often find myself just looking around from the highest point possible and enjoying stunning views of golden beaches, towering forts and bustling towns and villages. There is so much to see and do in this game aside from the main missions/story (which is really good) so it can become a bit overwhelming but it’s a beer enjoyable experience none the less and definitely one of the best and most enjoyable games I’ve ever played.
It’s a four star game. What you would expect from a well known studio and an already established IP. The graphics are excellent and what you would expect of a modern day RPG. Serious Witcher 3 vibes. Assassins creed is not a great game like it once was, back when it was first released many years ago. It’s not a god of war, horizon zero dawn or a bloodborne. I 100% the game in close to 150 hours. It’s a looooonng game, with 3 story lines to follow. A family story, a cultist story and an mythical (true ending) story.
The pre-order bonuses are obsolete once you level up, and you can only access them when you are level 5.
The main story is weak in some places and great graphics don’t make up for it. There needs to be a lot more fast travel places as the map is huge. If you like exploration you’ll enjoy this game….. but I can guarantee you will not like travelling between long destinations by boat. It really is so lacklustre and mundane. Ubisoft could have really worked on this aspect of gameplay.
There are lots of historical places to discover using the in game historical feature accessed via the map. Here you can learn some facts about Greece. However, I got this game at launch. New game plus has only just released and the feature I have written about has too (I think).
Once I finished this game I was ready to go back into Greece and change characters. However, the length of time I and everyone else had to wait for new game plus spoilt what could have been an even better game.
There are weekly events to earn an in game currency used to spend on in store items or extra gear. Mercenary events and ship events will keep you occupied throughout the story.
Once you finish the game it’s not very interesting and the only thing you can really do is start a new game plus file…. which means another 150h or a speed run for the three story lines.
This is most definitely the most polished assassins creed game in the series and arguably the BEST!! Have had mixed feelings about the AC games over the years but this has pulled me back in for sure. AC:Origins introduced and fresh approach to the series and this game you could basically say is the improved version of that. Quality gameplay, graphics and story and some real blockbuster missions (no spoilers). If your a fan of the series or just a fan of Origins then this is a must buy
I skipped a few of the previous assassins creeds, but I really enjoy this game! About 50 hours in you game pay and still got lots to go from the looks of it! Loads of gameplay with various side missions. Love the interactivity of the gameplay and how your decisions affect what happens next. Definately got me back into AC (Altho I still miss ezio!)
Bad points : it is a ridiculously long game and some of the boss levels are just too unnecessarily difficult , even when changed to easy settings
I had an overall good time with Odyssey, especially coming off the back of increasingly strained and samey titles Ubisoft were releasing. They took a break from their yearly deluge of Ac entries to fine tune the series, and AC Origins was the result, an incredibly fun and engaging open world assassin game. AC Odyssey gives me the feeling that they slipped back into their game-a-year mentality, but if they’re copy pasting from one of their best entries in recent times, is that such a bad thing?
Yes and no. The world is beautiful to look at and move around in. Each area of the map feels unique yet realistic. Simply moving around the world was made more fluid and fun, by the much quicker and smoother free running and horseback riding, and not to mention ship sailing. You can get an ability which negates all fall damage out of combat, and you can summon your horse from anywhere with a whistle. Combat feels pretty fluid and flexible to participate in, where each weapon type has different movesets and new abilities allow for some really broken builds.
However, due to the new level system, any enemy more than 2-5 levels above yours becomes virtually indestructible, killing you in 1-2 hits, and anything weaker than you becomes almost trivially pathetic. The game tailors enemies to guard areas you aren’t supposed to be in yet by making them way stronger than the enemies over in the next field. I frequently found myself crossing a river or reaching the crest of a mountain, only to see droves of wild animals and armoured soldiers with demi-god status. If the enemy is more than 5 levels above you, their level becomes a skull, and the game tells you you basically cannot win. That’s kind of a lie, you technically can dodge and counterattack enough to kill them, but the amount of time and risk involved makes it never worth it.
The story is your standard AC affair, that being not very good. I was following it for the first 3 hours, but with each cutscene introducing what felt like 11 new Greek named, bronze skinned warrior/scholar whatevers, I quickly mixed up my Socrates with my Achilles. I could generally follow along, and was never lost, but a number of times the objective became “Hunt down X and assassinate them” and I went “I thought that guy was my friend?”
There isn’t that much in the way of climbing rooftops and hiding in crowds in this game, much like Origins. For those who really liked the AC2 style assassination and stealth gameplay will not enjoy this game’s. You can often just walk into the enemies and provided your level is high enough, they can’t really stop you even with reinforcements. Sometimes the target will escape automatically when you get detected, but the crouching, hiding in bushes, and distraction mechanics work well enough that stealth is always a viable option. Odyssey just lets you be a gladiator as well as a sneak thief.
Overall, if you like Origins you’ll like Odyssey, but don’t expect incredible improvements. If you prefer the older, more linear AC games, this one isn’t for you.
…
What do you mean Gladiators were Roman and not Greek?
Bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas. He loves it. I am close to throwing the god damn PlayStation out of the window.
Grown male children. Not my thing.
So, if you want to give your other half yet another excuse to sit in front of the TV for literally hours on end and not do much else – this is perfect!
I’ve been a massive fan of Assassins Creed since playing the original game back when it first released. The Ezio trilogy and Black Flag were my favourites by far, especially Assassins Creed 2.
Rogue, Unity and Syndicate were all enjoyable but it was obvious that Ubisoft needed to shake the formula up a bit before it became too stale.
Then they released Origins which was a breath of fresh air to the franchise. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and now rate it up there as one of my favourite AC games.
Now after 25+ hours of Odyssey, I’m happy to say that I’m enjoying it immensely, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favourites. They’ve improved upon Origins systems and combat, while also adding an RPG element that is fantastic and immersive.
Cons: no shield combat (though this may be due to having the spear in the left hand).
Random slight FPS drops and freezes while riding the horse or ship (I’m playing on the PlayStation Pro).
Overall though this is an amazing edition to the franchise and I’d highly recommend it anyone, especially AC and RPG fans alike.
Bought it as a Christmas present for my boyfriend and he seems happy when he is playing. In his opinion is better than two previous parts of Assassin, a lot of additional missions and he owns ship what I think is a lot fun for him and also he is riging a unicorn . I don’t play but I like watch when he is playing especially when he is discovering new view points because of beautiful views. Very good quality of graphic.
I can recommend for all gamers. Many hours of gaming!
60 hrs plus if content, very immersive environment and story, fantastic combat system, exceptional graphics. 8/10, a must play. I would give origins a 8.5 it’s ever so slightly more original than this game. But honestly this game is top 3 assassin’s creed product material, easy!
Good game, big map but it’s just really long to go from one mission to the next. Too many side quests and there’s no point in upgrading armour and weapons because you’ll end up finding better stuff when you complete the next mission.
This is by far the best Assassins Cred yet. It takes the old formula and shakes it up in to a far more strategic game which learns from the best. It has elements of Shadow of Mordor, The Witcher and Dragon Age, with Assassins Creed mixed in, giving an overall epic feeling game. It can be overwhelming due to its size and complexity, but it soon begins to flow and is an engrossing gaming experience. Kassandra is the best character and the dialogue style and choices need to be considered as most have far reaching consequences which you can’t undo unless you want to start over. Highly recommended for anyone who has loved the previous games, yet relishes the idea of being immersed in an open world epic. 5 stars from me.
This is far different to many of the previous assassins creed. It has seemingly moved away from the stealth related concept to a heavier emphasis on the RPG elements.
Gameplay:
I have enjoyed the game so far and do get hooked! I have a short attention span and found the Witcher 3 to be a little dull in comparison.
The graphics are really good and the world is engaging and well presented. However, the world does few less dynamic than that of red dead redemption 2. As an example, you cannot engage the majority of the NPCs in comparisom as in RD2 and there aren’t really mini games.
The combat system is relatively simple and is different from the initial assassins creed games. Gone are the times where you could kill almost anyone with a silent kill with relative ease. Now the damage inflicted from
a stealthy approach depends on the assassins’ damage you can inflict which is determined by your character, armour, weapons etc.
Story
The story has been pretty interesting so far. I haven’t finished but the story flows well. I’m not sure how much impact the choices in conversations has on any outcome. The 300 tutorial for controls at the start was a bit underwhelming.
Many people have eluded to the voice acting and I would agree that this is hit and miss and can be distracting.
Customisations
Sculpting a character’s attributes and equipment forms a huge part of any RPG. I have enjoyed the different choice of attributes available across three skill trees: hunter, warrior and assassin. There is a wide variety of skill choices and many are pretty cool. I particularly like the ability to control a single arrow to the target.
In comparison to RD2 the weapon/ armour customisation is more akin to the Witcher 3. I liked the small details in RD2 such as the maintenance of weapons but this is not present here.
The World:
Ancient Greece does look pretty good!
It’s not dissimilar to my previous RD2 comparison.
The maps are absolutely massive and these will keep me going for a long time.
Glitches:
I have encountered a few times that I have had to reload the game due to freezes. However, it’s tons better than fallout 3.
Impression:
Overall, it’s a very good RPG. There is tons to do and it will ensure I have no social life for some time. However, it is difficult to feel truly involved in the world due to the lack of extra details, such as mini-games and the ability to engage any character in a conversation akin to RD2. I would buy this again but I don’t think I would pay 50. Having said all of this, I find that I am going back to Assassins creed more than RD2 so it is rather addictive.
I bought this games due to Ubisoft clearly taking on inspiration from The Witcher 3 and I am happily surprised to say that this games was worth everything I paid and delivered an amazing experience. Never before had I seen such a beautiful yet gritty side to ancient Greece in a video game.
I highly recommend this game
I got this for my great grandsons Christmas present but have had to give it early so he could get the code as it expired in November. He is loving it so hes happy..
I gave four stars. Due to the fact that my delivery was messed up. I preordered this game and paid extra for release day delivery. And I didn’t get it on time. But the game is a must have. But play the female. As the male voice is not good at all. Edit Take back saying the male voice is bad. After awhile of getting used to him hes not bad. Female is still better in my opinio
Never played an Assassins Creed game before but due to the subject matter of this one (Ancient Greece, I personal fav of mine) I decided to give it a go, and boy I’m glad I did .
The game while obviously not historically accurate gives a nice feel for the period, the game play is easy to get into but hard to master as a good game should be, so far played over 50+ hrs and nowhere near completed the main story as there’s so much else to explore and discover on route and its the only game to date that’s made me feel somewhat seasick when on board my ship :).
I play the game as Kassandra who has been beautifully depicted and voiced and the rest of greece is stunningly rendered that I’v spent moments just taking in the scenery.
all in all a great game to spend many hours in love it.
This is a return to form for the series. They took Origins and improved everything that was wrong with it. The story is far better, the characters are more interesting and the gameplay is amazing with a ton of cool new features (the cultist system is genius). The map is huge, the ship combat is fun, the villains are compelling and Kassandra is an awesome protagonist.
Definitely buy this if you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer but don’t bother purchasing the limited edition as the lame outfit included isn’t worth it, just get the standard edition and you could always add it on later if you really wanted.
I made a negative review a few months ago about it being “too grindy” and I’d like to retract my statement.
I thought the game was insanely grindy, most likely because of my stubbornness towards differences to my all time favourite game franchise. I stopped playing it not long after I made my initial review, but came back to play a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved and enjoyed every moment, even got the platinum trophy.
At the time I complained I feel that Ubisoft made some changes to XP payouts as I found it much more easier to level up after a few months break.
I’d highly recommend the game to new and old Assassin’s Creed fans, I rated it a 4/5 mainly because there’s some annoying bugs, texture bugs, render distance being a bit rubbish. But all is good and amazingly fun.
Really Good well throught our story. Side quests are plenty and the RPG style of combat is really fluid and a welcome change from the old system.
A long game, can feel a little Grindy if you don’t want to do the side quests. A lot of levelling but this can be done in lots of ways.
The world is really stunning….and massive. The Islands all feel unique and the areas are fleshed our. A minor critique is that sea battles aren’t as fun as Black flag (which could be a benefit for some.
I really enjoyed Origins and was excited when I saw Odyssey was an ancient Greece follow up; I’m honestly disappointed by the enemy leveling system. Every enemy in the game levels up alongside you and there is no option to turn this off. This means that I reached max. level far too quickly and most of the enemies are simply frustrating with how many hits it takes to beat them. A big part of the fun with RPGs is leveling up past some enemies that caused you grief and going back stronger than them and feeling the extra levels you’ve grinded for. The system used in Odyssey simply annoys me to the extent that I don’t think I’m ever going to have the patience to finish it, which is such a shame because there is so much to like about it. If an option ever appears where enemy autoleveling can be turned off, then I might go back to it. It is simply not fun anymore
First off, those who moan about having to buy experience or it taking too long and giving the game 1 star aren’t proper gamers. Why do people these days want to rush through a game in a couple of days and stick it on the shelf? Seems pointless to me! Yes, it takes a long time and yes, you need to explore to level up, but this is part of the fun! You do not need to buy anything, just play and explore and you’ll be fine!
The actual game is very good! Graphics are very colourful and detailed, there is a lot going on and there is always something to do. The missions are all good fun, but some of the mini areas (question marks) can be a bit samey, but this isn’t a massive issue! The sea battles and exploring are also good fun and you really notice the benefits of upgrading as you explore more tougher waters!
The negatives – well, as said before, the question mark areas of the maps can become repetitive…very repetitive, but if you mix a bit of exploring and questing it’s not too bad!
The voice acting is ok, but not the greatest! The horse physics however are terrible! The stupid thing will just change direction completely if you hit the smallest of stones!
All in all, a good game with plenty to do! Very similar to the Witcher, but not as refined and in depth! Well worth a play!
An improvement on the RPG system started with AC:Origins. Only played as the female charecter so far but I already look forward to replaying with the male. The fighting system takes a bit of getting used to (similar to Origins, but massively different to the rest of the franchise), once you do it is far more enjoyable and challenging. The storyline is intresting, I did find it odd that it was set before the Assassin order was created in “Origins” but it seems (i’m only about 30% in) from what i’ve seen so far makes sense for the setting. A solid addition to the franchise, a welcome return to ship combat seen in AC:IV, although I do miss the ability to use a telescope to look at ships from a distance to see there size and allegiance (the telescope first appeared in 1608,1700 years after the game setting), i’ll just have to stick with my eagle, great on land near useless at sea.
Ubisoft still have some tweaks to make the gameplay less frustratiing and in my opinion they should remove some additions such as the ability to jump of huge cliffs and land with a roll (once you upgrade a bit, I just found it made certain parts far easier than forcing me to rethink my approach), but they are getting there.
Latest in the Assassins Creed games. The biggest, most expansive game of the lot. Can’t really comment on it too much as only a few hours in but plays like a dream and literally can’t get enough…but things like family and work get in the way.
If your a player who enjoyed the original Assassins Creed, killing Templar’s and owning anything you want then this edition of AC might not be for you. Assassins Creed Odyssey changes the game into a full RPG, like Origins, the return of levelling and quests returns with the addition of game choices that have a later impact on the game and relationships well, pretty much just sexual encounters but it’s better than nothing.
The game world is by far the best yet, it’s visibly beautiful and the textures, lighting and modelling are all masterful. The voiceing in the game is a little hit and miss, some characters have great dialogue and voice acting and others…are pretty terrible. Luckily this is made up for as the story (at the time of writing this at level 29) has been really great.
From my 30 hours in game I’ve personally had a fantastic experience, and if your looking for an open world RPG title with a solid story, this is a game for you.
I enjoyed Origins, but never finished it. All of the trailers and E3 coverage made it look like just more of the same. I was completely wrong, this took the best parts of Origins and polished them, while adding a ton of great game mechanics.
I can’t think of an RPG I enjoyed more this year and yes it felt more like an RPG than an Assassins Creed game. Now if we could just get Ubisoft to drop the annoying modern-day storylines it would be even better. I hate being sucked out of the interesting stuff to be bored with a quest that boils down to ‘what must I do to get back to the game I was enjoying’.
I wonder though if they can just rename Assasins Creed to Psycho Creed. Apparently, the answer to every problem is to kill them.
Grrreat if your an AC Fan, the changes made in control system helps make it more challenging, at 72yrs Young keeps my brain trying to remember the best extra button controls to use when fighting tough opponents. I’m a Stealth Assassin so it’s great having the option as how You may want to play. Like so many I’d like to see a Chinese Origins version AC Ninja.
I have never liked the Assassin’s Creed franchise but this one has changed my mind completely. The RPG, open world element is excellent and the ancient Greek setting is impressive. The whole feel of the game feels so authentic. Being someone who has always been fascinated by that period of history, this game is a joy to play. The recreation of Athens is stunning and very accurate, as are the other cities such as Argos, Corinth, Sparta etc. I fully expect to be playing this game for months.
AC Odyssey builds upon everything that made Origins great, as the series continues to reinvent itself as an RPG. The game is packed full of content, with easily 100+ hours of side content on top of a compelling main story. Although depending on your approach you may find yourself fatigued or lost within the core narrative – arguably an unavoidable side effect of a game this large.
As both a compliment and criticism it’s worth noting that this game is trying very hard to emulate The Witcher 3, one of the best games of a generation. The similarities cannot be ignored, but if you loved that game and are interested in Ancient Greece then you’ll love this.
The ending is somewhat disappointing and Ubisoft seem to be all but totally ignoring the meta-story now in terms of the modern day Templar vs Assassin conflict.
I strongly recommend you try this.
Despite owning about four of the original AC games, I never had the time to play them – but when I saw a game based in Ancient Greece, I couldn’t resist!
You don’t need any knowledge of the past AC games to play this. I’m 20+ hours in and so far there’s only been one 30 second cutscene near the start that suggests there’s any other lore going on – but it doesn’t impact what’s going on in game, or your ability to enjoy the gameplay.
Graphics are fantastic. Controls and interface are easy to grasp and use. No real bugs or glitches encountered as of yet.
Anyone complaining about having to ‘grind’ and the micro transactions being necessary – they’re not if you’re here to just enjoy the game to the max, instead of rushing through it in a hurry to get completionist status. This is a huge game: it’s meant to take time, to be enjoyed.
Bought this PS4 version for my nephew. My only beef is that the console versions are locked to 30FPS.
This game is like Assassin’s Creed Origins but huge, with every game mechanic honed into a better feature.
You’ll see people compare it to the Witcher III: Wild Hunt because of it’s colour pallete and music style, along with some blatantly ‘borrowed’ visuals such as a “?” on the map for new places yet to be visited, a levelling system based on region, choices to be made during dialogue etc.
I’ve been playing this game on PC, myself and I’ve clocked up about 112 hours. I still have a few things to do and even some places I haven’t visited at all on the map. I also purchased the season pass, so they’ll be a full year of post launch content for me. It’s not a small game.
I couldn’t get into this franchise. I tried on many occasions to but no “bond” happened. I have spent no more than an hour on each of the ones I have tried but this one… This one has its claws in me. I’m DREAMING about this one! I’ve put in 46 hours from Friday morning to Sunday evening. I’m not eating (Which is a plus cos I’m a fat b’stard ) I’m completely consumed. If you’re on the fence… Believe me, jump of and join in!! I may even get Origins after this.
Fantastic game so far,
Lots to explore and keep you busy, reminds me a bit of the Witcher crossed with Origins as they have brought in a more rpg style. Not only is the world is big, it involves in sailing to other islands and there are plenty of tasks and quests in the game to keep you occupied.
Brilliant, what’s not to love! You get to climb a statue a Zeus and hang from the 10ft penis that’s carved into it – that’s in the first 10 minutes.
I’ve been playing a few hours now and it’s got all of the things you’ve come to expect from the AC games, but all just a little bit smoother. I like that you can visit the store and get some rewards based on the previous games you’ve played in the series.
I’ve got a lot more to play and am sure I can write a more detailed review then, but for now I’m hooked!
What a game! Been playing since last night and cannot put it down. The graphics and sound are awesome and the world design is similar to The Witcher 3, with seamless loading of areas.
Character design is fantastic with all the NPC’s fully realised and individual, my favourite so far is Markos who is an Arthur Dailey character, a dodgy wheeler dealer with the ‘gift of the gab’.
You can play as a man or woman, Kassandra who I went for is brilliantly done, the voice acting is perfect and gives her real character. Facial animation is of a very high standard like Horizon Zero Dawn. Every different character you meet and talk to feels ‘individual’ and not the ‘sameness’ you find in Fallout 4.
Combat is satisfying with 3 skill trees you can invest your ability points in. I go for the Assassin tree and the ‘detect nearby treasure/enemies’ skill is mega useful in caves or busy areas. You have several different weapons but the fastest is swords, blunt weapons take too long to ‘wind up’. The trademark assassination strikes are there and makes this game so fun, when you creep up on an enemy or whistle them into an ambush.
You can summon an eagle ‘Ikaros’ who flies overhead and detects and marks enemies and treasure chests, etc. This is very good for planning your attack on an enemy stronghold, so the lumberyard I swam out to sea and came in to take out the first guard. Ikaros is needed to locate targets like Markos, when you zoom in and scan the area below. Adds another interesting layer to the game.
The Limited Edition comes with the Dusk Gear Set for the Assassin, at level 5, so it’s well worth doing side quests until you get to level 5 and equip this great gear, makes the first mercenary fight much easier. The mercenary idea works great as these guys hunt you when you steal and are detected and are tough enemies. You can ‘engrave’ your gear at a blacksmiths so this gives you better stats. So if you have a weapon with +4 warrior you can add a +4 assassin to it as well.
Overall an A-mazing game, just can’t fault it, if you loved Witcher 3 or Horizon Zero Dawn then this latest Assassins game will hit the spot perfectly. I love it 🙂
UPDATE – I got 1 glitch where an Alpha Wolf got stuck in the rocks for 1 mission? I just went out, did another mission/exploring, went back and they were back, killed it and got the mission XP. Nothing to get excited about, the game is EXCELLENT, ignore the haters and try it yourself.
UPDATE 2 – I am up to lv10 and wow the game opens up once you get the ship, the wave effects are awesome! Sync points are like Horizon Zero Dawn’s ‘vantage points’ and give you the most breathtaking views, used for Fast Travel. Gameplay is smooth, no lag on my ps4 pro and HDTV. You can go to any docking area and call your ship to you, like calling the horse.
Combat is interesting as you can either assassinate an enemy or knock them out and recruit for your ship, for the mercenaries (the guys who hunt you) I tend to kill them as they have excellent gear. I think ‘Hykaros The Cunning’ gave me a set of rare daggers, the drunk merc the legendary bracers of Theseus, etc. After scratching my head for some time I worked out how to burn the ‘war supplies’, equip torch (right arrow) and press L1 + R1, aiming at the chest, Kassandra throws the torch. Brilliant and beautiful game, love it.
Your ship has the chest to store your stuff, at the back of the ship, I put in all the Legendary gear.
## As of 10 Oct there is a 2.35GB update, game works perfectly no lag, no bugs ##
The witcher 3 for the assassins creed series . Wow , this game is overwhelming with how much content you have . Love the exploration , combat , missions and rpg elements . Can see myself lose around 60-80 hours in this beautiful world . If you love open world games and the last assassins creed game ( AC Origins ) , you will love this . Amazing
