I’ve been looking for a suitable can opener that will work especially when trying to open a fray bentos pie I would struggle to open it up till I got the brabantia essential line opener it works perfect every time I’m now not struggling with the tins anymore.
I have tried several different tin openers, and no matter how much I pay, I find that they are never completely satisfactory, and even the ones that start off good end up being a problem. These Brabantia tin openers were recommended by Frap Bentos for opening their pie tins. As they were recommended and were not expensive I thought, hey, give it a go. Boy, am I glad I did. Easy to hold, easy to use, firm and precise, easily cuts, clean cut line. Wow! At last, I have found the perfect tin opener. We’ve used it for a couple of weeks now, and everyone in house loves them. They feel sturdy, and so I expect (hope!) they will last a long time.
Meant to do this review AGES ago! And yes for me, The best Can/Tin opener I’ve ever had and it gobbles up Frey Bentos pie tins lol.
Those pesky, sturdy Fray Bentos tinned pies TREMBLE in fear at the sight of this very strong Brabantia 4000629 Fray Bentos killer! ROAR !!!!
I’m right handed but can’t use right wrist very well. This works well for me. I hold the handles with my right hand and do the twisting with my left.
It doesn’t need a lot of power and sturdy to use.
Truely dishwasher safe and no sign of rust.
I spent much frustrating and wasted time trying to open Frey bentos tins with various different tin openers & after a little read around, one of these openers was suggested… I’ve just tried it for the first time and I am delighted – only took a few easy seconds to open the most infuriating tin in the world
I will see how long it lasts but I am amazed by this tin opener at the moment. It’s the small things in life haha!
I bought my first Brabantia and it lasted for many years. When it eventually wore out, I bought a couple of other can openers but they were all poor in comparison so it was back to Brabantia. Good, sturdy and comfortable to use.
Bought as a gift for daughter’s mother’s in law as identical to the one I use At home and I am very pleased with quality and ease of use. I Use paper towel between The rotating cutting grooves after washing to dry the wheels. Easy peasy!
I really like this product because it is heavy, well made and works very well in comparison to other can openers I have used in the past. A nice, classic design for a product which should easy last for years.
In answer to the question it is a tin opener and that’s what I have been using it for. I find it difficult to use it for anything else. Would not be suitable for mixing cement or using as a paintbrush.
It does the job and I have not had any problems with it since purchase some months ago.
I first saw this being tested on WDR Servicezeit (a German consumer TV show) a few years ago. It got top marks. On the strength of that I bought one for myself. My mom suffers from arthritis in both wrists so I let her borrow mine for a few weeks. Despite her arthritis my mom also finds it easy to use so I recently bought one for her too. Top Mark’s.
Unlike the other brands I have tried this can opener is robust and has coped easily with all the cans I have used including those with larger diameters. It can be relied upon to work properly.
Thank you Brabantia for coming up with a solid, decent, good looking tin opener..that actually WORKS and doesn’t fall apart. I’ve tried so many and they failed, even a more expensive Swiss Kuhn Rikon was no match. Happy Bunny..nice one. 🙂
Having tried numerous others and wasted money on cheaper versions I tried these, got them in January 2015, been used almost every day and still going strong and as sharp as the day I got them, very easy to use and very little strength needed to operate
Product update march 2020 and still going strong without a doubt best buy ever highly recommended
I had a Brabantia Can Opener for more than 20 years. Always delivered till a month ago it broke. I bought another brand in a shop, it looked the part. On the label it said it would be guaranteed for 10 years….. Didn’t work at all. So brought it back to the store and whilst waiting in the queue to be served I ordered The Brabantia. What a joy, just opened my first can again without any fuzz.
Bought this can opener for son at uni. The reason I bought it is because we have had the same one at home for years and is still going strong. This is the Brabantia Essential version, they do make another which looks the same but doesn’t have Essential in the name, but I stuck with this one because it’s the best tin opener I have ever had. Even better than electric and all of the fancy gismo versions available in can openers these days. Quick delivery.
I’ve had this a few years now. I bought it based on good reviews on Amazon and it’s completely lived up to its reputation. It still looks like new and it’s still sharp and efficient. There’s no effort when opening tins. Would highly recommend. Tin openers aren’t all the same, this is the real deal. You won’t look back.
After many months dealing with poorly functioning cheap can openers, I decided to finally face up and spend a little more than I had initially wished to. It was worth it! This opener is fast, very simple to use, generally doing everything you would expect and wish for. The bottle opener in the end comes in handy as well. It is a little on the expensive side as mentioned, but as a kitchen staple it is highly worth spending a little more if you are like me and use it on a very regular basis.
A fantastic can opener. I have tried all the fancy ones, electric ones, lift the whole lid off ones all which never lasted very long. This can opener does not look fancy its simple and practical and just does the job well. I’ve had ours for 8 years now and when my mum said she wanted a new opener I new exactly what to buy her.
Really excellent product for the money.A slightly different style to the last Brabantia can opener I bought, and that was on Amazon. However I am very pleased as it opens the cans a treat,it really does.
You have to keep the cutter close to the edge, otherwise it gets stuck at an angle and doesn’t cut completely around,it misses bits.
.It wasn’t an expensive product, but I think Brabantia deserve a slap on the back for this opener,as it really is excellent. The handles are nice to hold, and it washes so easily. If anyone reading this is thinking of buying one then I would advise they do,as this is a great tin opener.I suffer with arthritis, but it just glides around without any fuss or any effort.
Well done!
This is an excellent product, it is the only one that we have found which will open a tinned Fray Bentos pie. However one problem is when opening a normal tin the lid does not detatch completely. Beware it leaves a sharp piece inside.
For the past few weeks I’ve been struggling to wonder why my Culinaire Magican didn’t open tins at all. I thought that the tins were faulty! Stupid me lol – after a bit of research on the internet I found that this is a common problem with so called ‘Magican’ openers. Not so magic after all AND they take the whole top of the tin off which can be lethal as the tin top raw is razor sharp.
So, I went exploring reviews and after reading all the wonderful reviews left here by satisfied buyers I ordered this one. I already know Brabantia quality as I own quite a few Brabantia items and they have brought me nothing but delight. I ordered in complete faith and now I’ve had this a few days I wanted to share how pleased I am about this. Is it possible to be so excited about a can opener? I think it is possible as I am. You should have seen me a few days ago trying to open a can of sweetcorn with that nightmare of a Magican. Please don’t buy one of those, they are beyond useless and a total waste of money.
This one however, is such an amazingly small price for a beautifully designed, superb quality can opener that opens can as they should be open. Cleanly, swiftly, with no effort whatsoever and it takes the lid from the inside of the can, so not razor sharp edges that are not safe.
This is brilliant and I totally love it. I opened 3 cans yesterday, I wanted to open more.
Buy it! 100% recommended !!!!!!
Only had it a short time, but already really like this product.
As opposed to other openers I’ve tried in the past, this one requires very little initial pressure to pierce the average tin and once you start to turn the handle you realize quite how amazing smooth the mechanism is leading to a literally effortless all around cut.
I know it’s “just an opener”, but if you are looking for one you may be pleasantly surprised.
Positive grip on the can, nice smooth cutting action , comfortably shaped lever which is easy on the thumb. The only thing this opener lacks in comparison to my previous and venerable version is the old one had a magnet to hold the lid if you cut it completely off the can body . I miss that , it was handy .
I don’t know how it is possible to get turned on by a can opener, but trust me, it is.
When I opened this I saw it was a quality item straight away, the handles are thick and smooth, but what really impressed me was the twin wheel cutting discs, I was so excited to try it I grabbed a can of custard and set to work.
With only minimal pressure the cutting wheels grabbed and pierced the top of the can, again it tool only minimal force on the handle to rotate the cutting wheels and the lid was off – perfect !
Not only that but it has a bottle opener on it too, this will come in handy for the 20+ bottles of Budweiser left in the fridge.
So as you can see, I am very impressed with this and it was worth every penny, I need to check out the other Brabantia line of products because if they are all this good I can see me shopping with them a helluva lot more.
10/10
This is a very impressive item that will work with tins and cans of any design. At first I must admit I found it a little futtery to operate, but I quickly got it sorted out. I’ve noticed a few reviewers have found it difficult to operate, but I would recommend that you stand with your head looking down directly over the tin you wish to open, and then place the opener into the rim of the tin, this will make it easier to find the right angle for the opener to work effectively.
I bought this at full price a couple of months ago. I have bought several cheap can openers, all of them proving to be awful and a complete waste of money. This one works as it should, removing the lid (NOT the rim and lid by cutting around the side of the can). It is very smooth to use and easy to turn the handle. If you want to save yourself the frustration of the cheap versions, which do not open cans easily, then do not hesitate – BUY IT.
At last, a can opener which easily does exactly what it is supposed to do! In recent years, I have tried many different can openers, none of which has done a very good job and most of which have needed far more strength to operate than my weakened hands can now manage. However, this Brabantia Essential Line can opener is a real pleasure to use. It cuts cleanly, gliding smoothly around the tin with very little effort indeed on my part – in fact, I can actually operate this one using just my thumb and forefinger! I can whole-heartedly recommend this can opener.
Sturdy, reliable, easy to use, been using this opener for about a year now and it still opens cans as easily as the day I bought it, initially worried about buying the one with a plastic handle, but no need to, it’s really sturdy and very unlikely to round off or break. Would recommend this to anyone, worth paying a bit extra for this over some of the cheaper models.
Update – 5 years later and can opener still working like new – well impressed.
December 2022 update – Still working like new !!!
When I first acquired the opener I had great difficulty using it. I was using it in the same way as that I used for previously used devices by piercing the side of the can at the top. This was a total disaster which placed excessive stress on the device and was difficult to impossible to use finishing up with the cutter walking down the side of the can and the gear wheels remodelling the can with a pretty, unintended corrugated effect.
I discovered by accident and experiment that piercing the can through the top edge worked perfectly and I am now very pleased with the performance of the opener.
After a series of rubbish, flimsy tin openers which eventually wouldn’t bite on the tin thanks to cheap gears made from soft steel (including a relatively expensive one from John Lewis) I got this one on the strength of the reviews. We don’t open that many tins but it has been perfect every time so far and show no signs of developing any problems. It also feels very sturdy and doesn’t flex when attaching it to tins, which I have had on other openers. It’s a damn good price too so I don’t see that there’s anything to complain about. I’m guessing the few bad reviews came from a bad batch or manufacturing defect, which does happen, but don’t let them put you off.
With a plastic turnkey and handle or a metal turnkey and handle this is the Rolls Royce of can openers. You will have all experienced the cheap and nasty versions of this kind of hand operated can opener. With this you can rest assured that you, your wife and your family will all be safe from all the injuries and frustration that the cheaper and lesser implements bring.
Have no hesitation in buying this one because it will give you silky smooth operation and donkeys years of service.
You might be asked by some if you could leave it to them them in your will. igw
The can opener came with no instructions. Well, does a can opener need instructions, you ask? For this reviewer it did.
I thought it opened cans from the SIDE and found it chews up the side of the can; rather than slicing the top off cleanly, it eats into and rips the side metal, making an awful jagged mess and it is hard to disengage the resulting top.
It is for opening the TOP of a can, obviously, as I discovered.
I am probably daft – yes, okay, AM daft – but I thought I would point it out to other would-be-daft buyers of this product.
If by chance it is meant to open both SIDE or TOP then the design is flawed.
As a TOP opener it is good. No prob.
Surely I am not the only person to have made this mistake, but is it such a fag for Brabantia to just put `TOP opening can’ or something on the label? – if only for no other reason than to stop reviewers like this one burdening you all with their guff.
This is a sturdy & effective tool that performs well without any strain time after time. It also comes at a very reasonable cost.
There are a lot of naff tin openers out there (some very cheap & some very expensive).
Most ultimately fail or become too inefficient after a short period of time. This is the second Brabantia Essential tin opener we have purchased in the last 7 years, and not because of failure of the first…
We purchased this one for use in the caravan, and the original will be staying in the house (hopefully for another 7 years)…
I believe that says a lot…
Ouch!!! There are a lot of reviews for this item & mine is apparently the most “unhelpful” with one finding it so & no-one finding it “helpful”. I am at a loss to understand why (please can someone tell me)… 🙂 ???
EDIT Jan 2019! It’s still amazing and works perfectly. I want to marry this product.
EDIT Sept 2016: It is still as good as the day I bought it. BRILLIANT PRODUCT!
Seriously, this can opener is just ace, so so solid and works a treat everytime. I know what you’re thinking, how can a can opener be this good? Well trust me, I’ve used (admittedly bargain shop openers) plenty of absolute bobbins products until I decided to treat myself to this beauty. She’ll last a good while too I have no doubt!
I think it looks pretty good too, I mean come on, its a flippin can opener at the end of the day, not a Wedgewood.
Edir 11/08/2022…still have this same can opener I bought in 2013 and it still works perfectly
After buying several different cheaper can openers that either wouldn’t open a tin in one go or gave up working after a couple of weeks this can opener was like a breath of fresh air. It is easy to use, opens cans smoothly in one go, doesn’t leave sharp edges, feels like it will last forever and it looks quite stylish hanging on the hook in the kitchen. You cannot go wrong with this can opener it is worth every penny.
I’ve bought a number of can openers after the last few years, and without fail they’ve all either been disastrous from the off or stopped working after a couple of uses. So far I’m impressed with these. The mechanism is smooth and they’re comfortable to hold. Can lids come off easily and quickly, and don’t leave razor-like finger-slicing edges exposed (this is always a problem with the openers that take the whole top off – these are the traditional kind that cut inside the rim of the lid). We will see how long they last, but so far I’m impressed.
Very well built and easy to use. My only issue is that it leaves a little tiny ‘spike’ of metal at the point where you first start opening the can once you’ve finished which I’ve never seen before in all my years of tin opening, which of course can be dangerous.
After cutting my fingers in a lot of situations I decided it was time to buy a can opener. It’s probably been a while since I’ve used one, because I was so amazed with this that I considered it to be the best buy of the year for me.
I had a can opener at home from previous tenants and I couldn’t use it, so this one is good for sure.
After buying numerous cheap and not so cheap supermarket offerings I chose this purely on the strength of customer reviews, I was not dissapointed it does exactly what it is supposed to do, I have yet to find a can it won’t open including those tinned pies , it is smooth and easy to operate not requiring the “samson” grip needed by other can openers, it’s certainly not the cheapest but I would thoroughly recomend this product to anyone !!
What more can I say? I went from struggling with an old, blunt can opener to using this one, and it was like driving a Lexus after an Austin Allegro (for those of us old enough to remember that monstrosity, you will know exactly what I mean).
The handles are comfortable, the action is smooth and very little pressure is needed to turn the handle. I love it, and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
This is a little cracker – works like a dream even on those dreaded Fray Bentos lids. With my previous can opener I’ve resorted to all kinds of tricks to get that lid off. Couldn’t believe how easily this opener dealt with the pie lid – it took it off cleanly and left no sharp edges to worry about. I wish I’d bought this opener ages ago – my original opener cost about the same but didn’t work nearly as well. It’s a great kitchen aid. I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. It also opens tins where the ring-pull has broken off. Lovely, simple design that gets the job done.
Brabantia is long standing name in household goods with good and reliable products, this can opener is a replacement for my last one of some 10 years plus use,the can opener is sturdy and has a good and lasting parts.
The Can opener has good easy grip handles helping you to operate the opener without to much effort, the opener makes light of any can that requires opening.Well worth the cost, arrived the next day all in all very pleased.
