I think this item is faulty. This is my 3rd one and is the only one where the screen goes white then clear. One minute you get a great picture, and the next the screen goes blank to white.

    Versin 5″

Value for money I assume to be ok, as I haven’t powered it up or installed it due to its tiny size , I fixed my current screens bracket that broke.

I bought it to use as a monitor inside my car attached to a camera in my horsebox. I comment on night vision as have not used it at night, but perfect during the day

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little screen at a good price

I received this display today and hooked it up to an old infrared CCTV cam to make a little hand held DIY night vision display for camping and other pitch black activities, and it worked way better than i expected, strait plug and play, Camera+Monitor+12v Battery. Super happy with it and would definitely recommend and buy it agai

Ended up with a Variant 9 which has a 480×272 resolution. It can be easily modded to run off of 5V power.

Even with the correct resolution, the display is blurry making text hard to read.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI cant speak for its intended purpose as a back-up camera screen, because I used it in conjunction with a raspberry pi single board computer to make a handheld video game system in an aftermarket gameboy housing. Not perfect for this use, because the control board is too wide to fit in the gameboy, so I had to cut about a centimeter off the edge (including the buttons for adjusting the picture), so if you’re looking for one of these screens for this purpose, there are better options with smaller control boards. Also, this is very easy to convert from 12V operation to 5V, so thats a plus.

On the more relevant side of things, the picture quality is good for a composite screen, but there is some bleed of some colours on a black background (red particularly), but for what its intended for, and at this price, that should by no means be a dealbreaker.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWorks with my Raspberry PI perfectly (You will have to buy a 12v plug if you want to use this for a raspberry pi or anything that is not in a car)

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI needed a small LCD to connect up in a Raspberry Pi project and it’s exactly what I need. Although the resolution of this screen is less than PAL or NTSC, most text is still readable.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI bought this for my Raspberry Pi in the hopes of making a small, mobile platform. So far, it is working well.

    First the good news:
-Its a good deal for the money (at least I think so)

-It will power up on as little as 5v DC! I wired it to the power leads of a USB cable, and to my surprise it came on! My idea of running both the Pi and the screen on an RC car battery may not be so far fetched after all! 🙂

-With a little work, it looks really good in text mode. Still working on getting LXDE to look good.

    sudo nano /boot/config.txt

change the lines “framebuffer_width=640” and “framebuffer_height=480″
This will get you off to a good start, you can modify the overscan settings as well.

    The bad news:
-It really is small, 3.5” isn’t much space to work with. GUI mode requires more work than I have already put in to make it readable in all programs, but I’m sure it can be done…

-Requires diving into some settings files using root privileges

-It is not as clear as HDMI or even VGA for that matter. Remember old analog TV broadcasts and how the text on the evening news looked? Yeah, a bit like that.

-It has a noticeable flicker. I don’t know if this is due to the screen itself or the fact that I have compact fluorescent lighting (Remember the old days of CRT computer monitors? Had to crank the refresh rate up from 60Hz to 75Hz to get rid of the flicker under fluorescent lighting) I’m not yet sure if the refresh rate is adjustable. It may require a hardware hack that is beyond my current skill level.

The bad news really isn’t all that bad when you consider that it is using an analog connection. However, if you are expecting the sharpness and resolution that is available on current smartphones, you will be sorely disappointed.

I have cracked the housing open to see how hackable it is and found that the ribbon cable that goes from the controller board to the LCD screen is about the same size as the ribbon connector on the Raspberry Pi (Model B) that has been identified as a display connector. I have no idea if it would work and I didn’t want to risk causing irreparable damage to the screen in the process of finding out. So I left it as it was and reassembled it. It would be interesting if this screen could be hacked to accept a digital input…

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersConnected via RCA connector to a raspberry Pi RCA
    (connector is B005TK7XLA

Works a treat. Probably not the best quality image via RCA, but does as much as I need it to. Looking at images on it, the monitor would be perfectly usable as reversing camera, but at 3.5″ may be a bit small. (4 stars because may be a bit small for some using it as reversing cam, 4 stars also for raspi use due to image quality (particularly for text))

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to use with a Raspberry pi, and it fulfils all of my expectations. I was hoping that I could tweak it to run from a 5v. supply, and although I understand that some variants of this product will do this, unfortunately mine won’t, however I am more than happy to run it from a higher voltage (It will work perfectly well at 7.5v if required). It is a neat and cheap alternative to a monitor or TV connection. I only need to use it occasionaly to make adjustments, so the miniscule (but perfectly readable) text is not a problem.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBought this to be a reversing camera screen and for the measley price it is too good to be true really. I had to stick the screen proper onto the face when it arrived as it was starting to bow out in the middle but once I wired it up it suprised me! The fixed, non removable, stand that is supplied is quality. It has a sticky pad on the base for dash mounting. Not sure if there is any other option to mount it so don’t expect it to be removable once fitted. At this price though, you could buy more for other applications.

his is a superb little screen. needs 12 v and works from AA batteries to make it really portable. bought it to work with raspberry pi and it works just fine.

Golden Review Award: 95 From Our UsersThis monitor, like I’ve put in the title, was bought for a Raspberry Pi. I didn’t want to spend on anything larger than what was needed, and didn’t want to connect to a TV at all, since the Pi is just meant to be a fun, homebrew-style computer, and I wanted to build it as cheaply as possible. With that said, the monitor is not only cheap, but it WORKS and works well.

First of all, in describing it, the screen size that you will get out of the box is about the size of a PalmPilot’s (close to 3.5″), and it will come with a flexible arm and mini-stand attached to it that you can adjust however you like, with a sticker underneath in case you want to mount it to anything. In short, it is really a baby LCD flat panel.

On the back are three buttons: Menu, +, and -. There is no menu–simply press the buttons to alternate between Brightness, Contrast, and “Colorast” (or how much color you want–0 is grayscale), and finally OK or Reset. With that said, settings are very simple to configure on it.

Now, we get to the last (and fun) part. You can splice two cords together to get power if you wish, but I simply connected a 1.0 A (1000 mA), 12 V (and under 4 W) power adapter, which works efficiently well. I’m mentioning this to be helpful in case anyone else wants to connect this to their favorite little computer using an easier method. 🙂 You can easily connect any spare yellow RCA video cable, and the picture is surprisingly clear! To get specific, with good enough eyes, you can read 12 pt text in Sans or Monospace (though anything lower becomes harder to read–although I can still read size 10) and this monitor drives a 656×416 resolution according to xrandr (a little bit under 640×480). This is with overscan on (which means the screen puts an artifical box around the screen so it fits better) and I recommend you turn this on. Without it, maximized windows will exceed the screen space, making things a bit monotonous. Now, without overscan, it does about 712 instead of 656 if I remember right. This is totally up to you. Also, I find tilting it up a bit on a desk, and sitting closer to it helps make the experience a bit better.

And so far… all my shells show up clearly, and everything seems to be working fine. There’s barely any flicker I can see with my configuration, and it displays nicely. With all this said, that is the story thus far with this screen connected to a Raspberry Pi as a monitor, and I hope others find this helpful when setting it up. 🙂

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIt works well! Two video inputs no sound sadly and a 12 v dc power adapter to use it ( you have to buy) but that’s only if you don’t want in the car and in my case the raspberry pi! (You may have to put the fonts bigger as on default it’s hardly readable on the pi. Overall it’s great!

I bought this as part of a set I cobbled together here on amazon. Its really amazing to me that this sort of set can be purchased and all work together for such cheap money. I ran the wires loose next to the components so if any one goes bad, I can easily swap it out with a replacement.

Night Vision Parking Car Rear View Wide Angle LED Reversing CMOS Camera
Sold by: loftek technological CO.LLC ( seller profile )
Works good. No issues. Grid distance lines all in blue and angle on my car (mounted up under the license plate sill) shows ground up to about 18″ from the rear bumper. Can’t angle it manually other than choosing a different mounting point. Wired to reverse lights.

3.5 Inch TFT LCD Monitor for Car / Automobile
Sold by: SOUNDSOUL LLC ( seller profile )
Flips back and forth from reverse mode quickly and the screen is pretty sharp and quick. Wired to my aux cigar lighter fuse. The two RCA video inputs were a great surprise as well as the automatic switching to the reverse cam. Thought I was going to have to wire a manual switch.

Waterproof Car Rear Vehicle Backup View Camera High-definition Cmos 170 Degree Viewing Angle E363
Sold by: yyaudio llc ( seller profile )
Small profile, hooks up easy but needed extra length so I took an rca cable I had and attached with an additional barrel connector. Picture was still fine. Distance grid is in red yellow green. viewing angle is nice and wide. hooked in with the monitor power.

RCA Barrel connector and extra RCA cable (radio shack and home)

Only downfall is that the forward image is mirrored and I can’t find a way to flip it but it still works great for seeing how far your nose is from the curb. Took me about a day and a half to complete but I spent most of my time debating where I was going to connect to power. I was in no hurry either.

Golden Review Award: 69 From Our UsersI just got mine today. It came in a plain white box with pretty useless instructions. I am still not sure what the voltage is, I am guessing 12vdc since it is a common voltage for small LCD screens and it is meant to be installed in a car. To be on the safe side, I powered mine up on a 5v pack. It requires a little soldering, nothing a radioshack iron can’t take care of. Without a TV signal, the backlight flashes blindingly bright on for a split second and shuts off. When you connect a TV signal, it picks it up pretty quick. The plastic frame feels a little higher quality than most cheap Chinese products. It almost looks like an iphone in an odd way. The display isn’t retina resolution but for 20 bucks, I am very happy with it. The menu is just the generic, contrast, brightness type deal with the occasional misspelling. There is one menu option that allowed me to flip the screen upside down and invert/mirror in both orientations. This obviously is good for using it as a monitor while reversing. The only minor thing I really don’t like is that the buttons on the back actually make pressure point ripples on the LCD. I am afraid it will crack the screen eventually.

I do not actually intend to use this in my car though. I actually intend to use it with an arduino and RC FPV projects. (A back up monitor, I would not recommend this as a primary at all) For $20 with free shipping, I am thinking about buying a second one to use in my car though.

    EDIT!

I have done a little experimenting with this LCD and it actually seems to have a large voltage spike on start up. So much so that it actually burnt out a 12v camera that was connected to the same power source. If you are going to use this, I recommend a diode and a suppressing cap on the battery line.
