Have been using a battery operated opener (one of those oval shaped things) since I cannot use a manually operated opener due to lack of strength in fingers/wrists (arthritis plus age).
When it finally broke, I looked arouond for a replacement, read some good reviews on this one and decided to give it a try.
It arrived quickly BUT the instructions which accompanied it were all foreign – not one english one to be had!
Fiddled around with it until I figured it out.
AND I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!
Despite the arthritis and weakness in my fingers it went around the can like a dream. Can’t praise it enough! The only reason I’ve given four stars instead of five is lack of information/instructions in english. But I recommend it wholeheartedly.
I was looking for the type that cut through the folded tin, but this actually cuts below, leaving a sharp edge, and you cannot reseat the lid.
Having said that it works well, and is easy to use
Bought to replace my 1980’s Mike & Remmel ltd tin opener, the cog and wheel of which had finally worn down after 30+yrs of use. The Culinare is pretty much the exact same model and works a treat! It is light-weight, easy to attach, grips well and opens cleanly and completely, with little effort. Having wasted money on more substantial looking openers which promised much but delivered little, the Culinare is great value for money too
I own four tin openers, because each one seems to only work on some tins, not others. What ever happened to the one tin opener that was in your mother’s kitchen, opened everything, and could be passed down for generations of owners of tins needing opened.
A friend recommended this tin opener to me, and she was spot on. It does actually do exactly what it says on the tin, and lets you open the bloomin’ thing too.
Ordered this on the evening 20th delivered 8/40 am on 21st. I had a tin opener like this for about 30 years. When it gave up last September i bought a different type used two or three times now useless. When this arrived i opened the tin that the other one didn’t wonderful just like the one i had all those years in constant use. buy with confidence.
Our can opener started to seize up during lockdown so it was off to Amazon to find a replacement.
I was intrigued to see this design, which I think I had used decades ago.
It arrived very very quickly and is a joy to use. I’m left handed and it works just as well for me as for my right-handed partner. It is also very safe, lifting the lid off with no sharp edges. Brilliant !
I hope it gives a few years service because this is now my preferred design and if it proves to be robust I’ll just keep on buying the same again.
UPDATE Oct 2022 – still going strong. PLUS I find it is much easier to clean/keep hygenic than the old butterfly wheel designs which tend to drag the can’s contents into the wheel mechanism.
Nothing else matches this one. i bought this type some 6 years ago and then when i misplaced it resorted to other types from Morrison and Ikea and they all broke and were useless. But this one is excellent. Bought a couple recently, one for my daughter too.
I gave a 5 start because I was expecting a light blue colour to arrive, instead I got a white one. Why? Who knows. However, I need the opener so Ill keep i
I have one of these at home, so I bought these for work when the butterfly ones we previously had were not up to the job and did not open the cans cleanly. Simple to use, nice size> Well worth paying a little bit extra for these as they are a quality product and will last.
Works well enough as a can opener, but the motion required is a bit fiddly.
Note that it cuts the side of the can, not the top, which doesn’t work for all cans, and means you can’t use the lid to drain the can once opened.
Have been trying to find this tin opener for months to replace my old one which was in use for many years but I did not know makers name to reorder.Had not seen it in any shop.Ideal for use by left handed people as I am because the opener opens on the top not on the side the turning knob much easier also for people with arthritic fingers.
If you’re here reading this review maybe you were like me, doing the rounds on amazon looking for a cheap can opener that actually works.
Well I can tell ya that your search is over. Buy this one. This is the third I’ve bought on amazon and it’s the one I will stay with for a long time now. It just works. And doesn’t rust. What more ya wa
I’m 55 and have tried just about every type of can opener going. This is the best ever. Easy to use. Simple design. No fiddling finding batteries and having an impatient cat shouting for her tuna as you lose the will to live trying to open a can. Excellent.
Recommended.
Update I’m about to reorder another, over 3 years later. It gets a lot of use & hope the next one is as good.
We actually use these in the lab to open test cans we’ve made and they get to open several cans a day week in week out. These aren’t made to last a lifetime but with our level of usage I’ll be able to give people an idea of the life span they can expect.
We use this style of opener, that takes the top off the can rather than just cutting out the lid, as we want to look at the whole inside of the lid for interaction with the test contents. In the lab we wear anti-cut gloves for protection but I’ve always found that the clean cut this type of opener produces is less likely to cut you than other openers.
The four stars reflect the level of construction rather than saying anything bad about the produc
I have been through more than a few can openers in the last couple of years and think I’ve finally found one that really, really works. Have had it a few months now and there hasn’t been a can it couldn’t open and quite easily at that. Added bonus that it cuts so that you don’t have sharp edges on the lid!
I love these. Bought 2 to replace one I lose in a “divorce” so easy to use, easy on the thumbs, great for older people, or those with weak hands. Only caution is it leaves the lip of the tin a bit sharp, as it cuts off the whole lid assembly. Be aware of that and you’re golde
I was pleasantly surprised with this little opener. When it arrived it looked small and very light and I didn’t think it would be any good but I am happy to report I was proved wrong.
The little opener has powered through about 50 cans so far with no nonsense and very easy to use with a comfortable handle puts the old traditional metal style one to shame. It cuts from the side instead of the top and leaves a nice clean edge which helps to not shread hands when cleaning out the can for recycling.
Very pleased would definitely buy again.
Had one of this style opener for around 20years, the plastic finally broke. Purchased 3 other brands of supposedly the Best can opener. We were fed up with each after about 2 weeks of use. Searched Amazon and found this slightly updated version ( the handle is slightly longer)
Purchased two ( second one for my sons family) and love them. Absolutely the best can opener we have used.
Excellent tin opener. Not perfect – some of the other reviews mention a couple of valid ‘cons’ among the ‘pros’ but these are comparatively trivial and nothing to prevent me recommending this gadget.
Like others, I owned this opener’s predecessor model for nearly 25 years, and am only now replacing it as it’s beginning to lose its grip when in use. The quality of this item appears undiminished.
Probably the best tin opener … ever!
My old one broke (after owning it for about forever) – a part of the plastic snapped off and I couldn’t find one like it anywhere. Doing seemingly random searches I eventually stumbled upon this one and it is exactly the same. This is about the only tin opener which hasn’t be ‘improved’ or looks ‘modern’ or ‘complicated’. Simple and straightforward. Does the job and opens tins cleanly with no fuss.
It works well and keeps a grip on the lid exactly as it promises. The mechanism seems ok and cuts the lids off easily but the body is short on substance so time will tell.
A decent can opener but a bit fiddly to use, particularly to get the lid off the unit once the opening is complete. I manage OK but it annoys my wife somehow. I have still given it 4 stars as a lot of things annoy my wife so that it not a good barometer for performance.
I bought my first one when it was called WL housewares in 1983 and it finally broke 1st may 2015. 32 years must be a record! It is simple to use and easy to clean. It will open any shape of tin and yes, the cut is sharp but at least it’s not jagged. Just use common sense when disposing of the tin. Keep away from small hands and pets. There is nothing to match it in durability and reliability. I am thrilled that I was able to find a replacement.
I’ve already got one of these from years ago and decided to treat my daughter to one as she’s off to uni – why struggle with one of those “key” type ones which often lose their grip when you can have one of these. Not only that, but it’s cheaper than it was many years ago so well worth the paying the extra from an “ordinary” tin opener.
I would never buy any other type now.
Being left handed, I struggled with traditional openers and actually preferrred the old bladed type that used to leave the lethal jagged edges.
That all changed back in the mid eighties when WL (later bought by Culinare i believe) released this lift-off can opener. I still have the two bought back then, and they can still open cans though the metal bits finally rusted to make them unusable for food.
I had been using varying cheapo imitations for a few years, lamenting the unavailability of the lift-off original.
One night i decided to have a look around and see if any new-fangled can openers were on the market to relieve my opening stresses. Imagine my complete and utter delight, when fairly high up on my search list, was a link to these babies here on Amazon. I pulled the trigger without hesitation and waited impatiently for delivery.
The day came, I unpacked the opener and decided to have beans-on-toast for lunch. I was bricking it! What if the openers were a pale imitation of the original? I positioned the opener on the lip of the can and closed the handle. It bit into the side of the can like a good ‘un. I turned the knob and the can opening progressed smoothly.
This baby appears to be almost identical to the original – cosmetic differences only. Regular use has proved it durable too. I wish they dod them in different colours like the originals, but as long as they stay availalble I will be happy – may buy a second just in case.
Get one whichever hand you use. They make opening cans a pleasure.
The Lift-Off method of opening cans is inherently superior because the cutting wheel rolls along straight instead of around a bend. Also a very large levering action is used to engage the wheel into the can. So the device requires less effort to use from start to finish. It is highly reliable and long-lasting, partly because of its simplicity. (My parents-in-law bought one many years ago, and we have now got one too.) Now for the downsides: (1) With traditional openers the opened can is safe and the sharp lid can be put inside it; with lift-off openers the top of the can is sharp, while the lid is safe; so the empty can is more dangerous. (2) There are corners on the inside of the device when opened that are dificult to clean properly, so there is a slight hygiene issue. Nevertheless I would strongly recommend this device.
my partner bought an expensive (15) stainless steel tin opener and for months i had thought i must be doing something wrong as i found it incredibly difficult, often impossible, to open tins with it. it was heavy and the part you turn had hard metal edges that hurt my fingers. plus it left the lid of the can with a razorsharp edge, making lifting it off a risky task. i finally decided to buy this Culinare lift-off as it is the style of tin opener i have had in the past. it lifts off the whole lid safely, making tin-opening no longer a frustrating activity for me. my partner reluctantly admits that it works far better than his and we now only use this one. all tin openers are not the same – and this one is so simple, lightweight and unfussy yet does a far better job than more expensive ones. i really recommend it.
Having tried a number of battery tin openers, they ALL fail within 12-15 months. Bought this Culinare as a cheap backup. It’s a bit fiddly to attach to the tin but works perfectly each time- although I’ve only used it for a dozen times. Think I’ll buy another as a backup to my backup!
Like Cal (02/05/12), I’ve been using a “WL” can opener for around 20 years. It’s been brilliant! It does a great job and is easy to use, and has certainly had a very very long life. Of late though, it has started to slip a little on every alternative half turn. I’ve been searching for a replacement for some time, but feared that WL openers were so good, they’d gone out of business.
I was delighted when I came across this Culinare model, as it is the same model. Perhaps not actually from the same mould though, as the handle is just slightly longer by a few millimetres. Having done a little digging on Google, I do believe that the Culinare Lift Off is the direct descendent of the WL model.
My old opener was marked WL Housewares. WL seems to stand for William Levene. Inside the handle is the company name Mike & Kremmel Ltd.
The Culinare opener also bears the name Mike & Kremmel Ltd inside the handle.
William Levene Ltd (whose brands included several other well known names such as Cole & Mason) was acquired by Diethelm Keller Brands Ltd in 2006 (DKB Household UK). Long Live the “Lift Off”!
I have had a tin opener with WL written on it for many years and it was brilliant. I didn’t know where to get a replacement. This one is probably made from the same mould. It is identical and works equally well i.e. simple and effective on every can.I have tried other can openers and they are either complicated or don’t always work or both. I have bought a second one of these as a spare in case they become unavailable
Well, ring pulls are becoming more prevalent BUT, if you have an old style can that needs opening this Lift-Off is by far the most reliable.
Yes it is plastic but it incorporates the best stainless steel where it counts. Leaves a perfect edge and will last for years. Only thing I would recommend is that you do not put it in the dishwasher. Excellent price here too and delivered almost before it’s ordered!
