I bought these for drinking red wine like they do in France ! They were great value are fairly robust ( I have a terrible track record with glasses!) and are fine in the dishwasher. They remind me of glasses we had at school many , many years ago and I thought they would be good glasses for kids to get them used to handling them.
Forty years later, in a little bar in a remote French village, the same name, in the bottom of the same glass.
Twenty years later, when the last of the cheap tumblers finally broke, there was never any question, which glasses to buy.
I was just waiting for that glass to break, so I could buy the correct ones.
They will probably outlast me.
Somehow, we were sent glass glasses, not plastic glasses. We liked the heft, weighted feel which makes them stable, less likely to be knocked over. The wide mouths make them easy to clean, all the way to the bottoms when something yuck dries up down there. Instead of a curvacious body shape, the faceted, conical body is easy to hold, even with soapy, slippery washing up liquid. They nest well in stacking or side by side (up/down) on the shelves.
A good shape for espresso as it flairs slightly at the top which helps catch the coffee below a porta-filter. The glass (at the sidewalls) is around 2-3mm thick which is perfectly fine. I actually discovered these glasses in use at a big coffee shop in London Bridge so if they survive commercial use then they must be sufficiently sturdy for light use at home. At this price point I would consider them good if they lasted 6 months.
As an added benefit of being slightly thinner, the specific heat capacity is reduced and so less heat is removed from your coffee which is important for maintaining your intended flavor profile.
All in all, these are clearly well made, stylish and more than sufficient for espresso use. Highly recommended.
We also used these in Grammar school,I can see them now all lined up on the trestle tables in the dining room.
Thinking back to those times,my Mum treasured those glasses as unless you had the ration coupons you couldn’t buy any more, assuming that our local Grocer had these in stock. This grocer sold everything you could think of,so different from today! He used to stack the glasses in the shop window,in a sort of pyramid shape,it was a wonder to behold as how they didn’t all fall down I will never know.Kids then, loved to window shop as we had so little compared to kids today.
Anyway, nostalgia apart, these glasses are truly excellent and very strongly made. Also as one other reviewer stated, they are so comfortable in the hand.
So go on,spoil yourself,a truly bargain buy and the nostalgia comes free :)!!
