This was a pain to install as the easiest bit by far was getting the velcro onto the window frame although it brought forward a sweat though I was in the sun as a result. The hardest and most annoying bit was getting the fabric to align up right so it doesn’t get misaligned….bit hard to describe but my windows have thick wooden rectangles for their frames so the distance around the frame bit and the window bit is vastly different as a result, even on the inner frame bit. As a result I needed to pinch the fabric for the window bit significantly before getting to the end of the length of the frame bit so that way it wasn’t too far ahead of the frame and thus over stretching the fabric.
I was very glad though to have chosen to overestimate the size of my window rather than go for one size down for this product as because I would have probably ended up being unable to fit it. However I will say that the product does not create a complete or too good of an seal especially around the pipe for the air conditioner as the zip ties do not do enough to help the zippers create a seal around it. Additionally the velcro has gaps in it despite myself doing my best when installing to push the strips into the corners good enough and with just how velcro works air does get through but less so than without it as now my air conditioner isn’t fighting so much against the hot air it’s putting out and the air from the outside.
This is great at holding the exhaust pipe in place while stopping warm air coming back in, increasing the efficiency of the air con without having to have a vent cut through the external wall.
It was also pretty easy to install.
only slight issue I had was how to fit the velcro tape around the window handle, I simply cut it in half and kept some spare as I suspect it might be the part that detaches from the window first when removing the air con for winter storage.
Well, installing the seal was a breeze with a video attached to the description on Amazon. Velcro could stick better in some places but mostly did an OK job so it could be not wholly dry after cleaning and not the fault of the provided self-adhesive velcro straps (I had a problem with it only on a couple of inches of the velcro strap).
As you can see in the photos the whole thing is nicely stuck around the window and it is possible to properly close or open the window so if the air-con unit is not used it can be closed. We use it to heat the office and works perfectly with this seal.
In terms of functionality, the product does what it says on the tin, the look of it and the amount of fabric will differ for each window and the instruction could support how to make it look cleaner in the window
The idea is the material creates a seal between the window and frame so that the hot outside air doesn’t get back in, yet the air can escapre out of your aircon exhaust pipe.
This can also be used for a tumbledryer, but to be honest, not sure how many people would run their tumbledryer like that.
At 21, I think it’s very expensive for what you’re getting, but must admit that it definitely works better than not having it, so despite the price, the efficiency gain would probably make it pay for itself in the long run. Also the aircon just works for effectively and can actually maintain a lower temperature (hot air getting back in more readily otherwise). Do you feel like you’re getting value, probably not. Do I regret buying it? – No, it doesn’t look pretty and seem good value, but it has served its purpose.
Purchased to use with a portable air con unit. My windows all 4 sides using window frame surround as my measurement was 286cm so I purchased the 300cm(3mtr) hoomee. This was more than enough. Instructions were clear but the basics are cut double sided Velcro to fit around window surround then as my windows open out attach double sided Velcro on inside of window frame. Then attach the hoomee sheet as per instructions making sure you start at your window handle by middling the sheet and simply attach to Velcro.
Positives
good adhesion to window frame, hoomee sheet is strong and well made and Velcro is good quality. Allows you to habe this fitted all year round as window will close when fitted.
Negatives
All I can say is having a sheet round your window isn’t the prettiest but you can detach the sheet from the velcro if preferred but as I haven’t I won’t comment on how good fixing and unfixing may affect the adhesion but will say I don’t think there would be any loss.
It is extremely easy to install. Trick is to watch the videos relevant to your window, then watch them again! Assuming you’ve ordered the correct size, once the Velcro is on the window and the frame, if you do put it on the wrong way (yes you can!) simply pull it of and correct your mistake.
As my new air con arrived a few days before I got this, I simply stuck the hose out of the bedroom window. It worked OKish, but what a difference it made after installing this! The room cools down significantly quicker and you can feel the air resistance when you open or close the bedroom door with the air con going.
We’ve had two follow up emails since we bought this asking us to contact the supplier if we had an installation problem (not enough Velcro etc) and they would sort t out for us. Not needed thankfully but a reassuring touch.
Shane I couldn’t give them more than 5!!
The seal is simple to attach and just requires you to add the Velcro to the window frame and attach the seal.
Once attached there’s four zips so you can have the pipe through one hole and still be able to open the other zips to get to the window handle when you need to. You can also cable tie the zips round the tube so it doesn’t come open.
The seal doesn’t keep out 100% of the heat but it keeps out enough to make a difference.
If you don’t want it attached during the winter months you can just pull the seal off and leave the Velcro up ready to use again next year.
At 20.99 (it’s current price) I think this is well worth the money and I’d definitely recommend it.
If you have or are thinking of getting a portable AC unit then definitely get one of these (or one per window you intend to use the AC unit with), it makes a huge difference when you seal off any outside hot air from getting in.
During the recent heatwave here in the UK it’s been about 35C outside, but I’ve been able to keep my room at around 20C, but prior to using the window kit it was probably at best 25C – so well worth it!
It is worth adding that you do want to make sure you get a complete seal around the window (as best you can), with my AC unit there was a small gap between the exhaust and the zip as you obviously can’t close it all the way, so I just used one of the provided ties and wedged a 5p plastic shopping bag to fill the hole. You’ll know if you have a good seal if you can’t feel any air being pulled in around the edges of the window (when the door to the room is closed), and also when you try to close the door to the room you should notice a fair bit of resistance when it’s nearly shut as the air will be being pulled from the rest of your home.
I gave 4/5 for Adhesion as after a few days there was a section of the straps that came off of the window, I did make sure to press down all the way around the window so not sure how it came off but it hasn’t happened again so maybe it was me leaving the room and closing the door too quickly and causing the air pressure to pull it away (I mean I have sealed the room pretty well!).
I have single side hinged windows with a frame perimeter of 320cm and ordered the 300cm after consulting with Hoomee. It was too small on the hinged (narrow) side. Contacted customer service again and they could not of been more helpful. Sorted out replacements, polite, prompt and pleasure to deal with. Re ordered the 400cm and they fit well and allow easy opening and closing of window without having to remove seal. Really helps the Aircon do its job of expelling the hot air and keeping the room cool.
The issue is, with the small one, it’s only slightly too small but that leads to a hole big enough to let air back in, mostly negating the effects of this product. The big one is far too big and there’s lots of leftover material with nowhere to go, also creating big holes where air passes through.
So, if your window is plus or minus about 20CM from the size you are buying, that should be fine, but any more than that and it’s not going to fit properly.
If you have a window size that matches this product, I see no reason why it wouldn’t work. The velcro straps stick very well and in general it’s a working product.
My living room is 24 feet long by 15 feet deep, so around 360 square feet in size – hence I got a 12,000 BTU rated unit as these are able to easily cool up to around 450 square feet of space. I had done a fair bit of research online and found that most people who rate these portable units poorly seem to install them incorrectly (usually by not properly sealing the window). And yes, they are a bit noisy – but let me tell you – it’s worth it! Today while the temperature gauge was showing 27C in my bedroom, my living room was a chilly 20 degrees! A huge difference in feel!
This window seal is a pivotal part of the equation. Know that it will fit virtually any window type (including mine, which was not listed, but which I deduced from photos and videos that I saw online), so long as you measure the perimeter correctly and order the right size! Make sure you order the closest size to the perimeter! The only tools you need to complete the installation is a pair of scissors. Follow the instructions carefully (they were pretty clear), and if you get confused, there’s a video on YouTube that can be helpful (but it’s not rocket science). It took me about 8 to 10 minutes to install the seal.
Some thoughts: While the sticky part and Velcro strips on the seal are quite strong / top notch (I stuck mine onto the glass part of my window as the frame had locks in the way, and it sealed flawlessly), I do wish the overall fabric material of the seal was a bit thicker. The reason for this is the material is so thin that I can clearly hear the hose venting the hot air outside the window, and that just adds to the noise factor. HOOMEE – perhaps this is something you can address in a future version of the product? A thicker, more insulating ‘Quiet’ material? I would gladly pay more for it. But perhaps I’m nitpicking – it works, and it’s worth it’s weight in gold for me!
Easy and quick to install on a double glazed window that opens outwards. Instructions are straightforward – essentially, clean frames, stick on self-sticking velcro, and attach the material. Oh, I should mention that as my window is smaller than the material, I put pleats in the seal in order to absorb some lengths and to prevent a flapping overlap at the end. You’ll know what I mean when/if you get one. Velcro has, so far, stayed in place though I may need to take it off the seal whilst I wait for an air-conditioner replacement – story for another review.
You get a roll of velcro tape which you adhere both to the window frame and the casement (the part of the window that opens and contains the glass), and the plastic window seal itself which attaches to this. It’s a bit fiddly and it took me two or three attempts to get right, but that’s no problem thanks to the velcro. Once it’s attached, you can open the window, unzip and poke the hose through (there are in fact two zips in case your air conditioner has two hoses) – there’s even a pair of cable ties to hold the hose in place for a semi-permanent installation, but I didn’t find them necessary.
The seal comes in various sizes – my window diameter was between 3 and 4 metres, so I had to order the 400cm and overlap the edges slightly, but this was easy enough to do.
Easy to fit, functional and keeps the hot air that’s being blown out from the extractor pipe outside (and insects too) and seems to keep the rain out as well. Although it’s early days, I can’t really see anything going wrong unless the adhesive stops working, or the zips break, which does not seem to be the case so far. Only thing is that it is not insulating, so when it’s hot weather, the AC has to work harder and longer. If they can find a better insulating material, then I’d be happy to give it five stars, everything else being equal.
1. fit the velcro around frame and window with the window closed so you can locate the best place to stick it where it won’t get in the way of opening and closing
2. attach the taller side of the fabric to the house side / window frame, and the shorter side to the window itself. It would probably work the other way round, that way just gives a neater finish and better ventilation when window is open.
I have it fitted to a Velux roof window, set to top-hinged opening (so open on 3 sides). The difference it makes is phenomenal – I would not have believed it before experiencing it.
Before – room had cool bits with wafty hot bits
After – room like a fridge, with same air conditioner settings.
So we are very happy with this!
This is a nice quality product that comes with everything you need, but how effective it is I am not convinced. It was easy to fix to the opened window and the casement inside, using the white velcro strip supplied, but it allowed the window to open only just enough for a 6″ diameter (147mm) hose to pass through. There is no way to adjust the length of it, so if your window is smaller than the 3m length (measuring across the top, down, and along the bottom) you are left with surplus material that doesn’t look tidy. However, it is easy to still close the window once the hose is removed.
We have a window that opens out like a book, and for some reason we found it a bit difficult to conceptualise how the whole thing went on. The quick instructions, in case anyone else finds themselves in this sitatuation:
1. Put velcro tape on the window frame
2. Put velcro tape on the window itself. We did both of these with the window closed so we knew it wouldn’t impede. There is a small gap where the window handle is.
3. Fold the seal in half to find the middle. Start this middle of the frame by your window handle, and then go around. Connect other side to the window itself. We have some floppy bits on the side of the window that barely opens. We just tucked them in and around until it was relatively sealed.
4. Feel smug, and dumb for not realising before that it’s so straightforward.
It works well enough that the seal gets sucked in and creates some pressure. We noticed the air con unit worked much more efficiently when it was properly sealed off as opposed to my temporary fix. We will definitely save the money in energy for the cost of the seal in no time, and it also doesn’t look as trashy as a cobbled together collection of window blocking things!
Looks a mess, doesn’t really fit properly but does seem to help with the heat generated. Don’t think it’s really designed for a side opening window. Didn’t understand why you only measured 3 sides when it sticks to all 4 either.
