Metacritic has you covered for actual reviews it’s an 89 from critics and an 84 from users. It has an active subreddit, and a sublime picture/photo mode. Noscript has a video about the making of it, which is also worth watching.
The Game however is beautiful, and the main character is surprisingly well realised, all backed up by an amazing musical score. There are no load doors, just you, the open world, and any number of mechanical dinosaurs, plus a decent plot/story and worthy boss fights.
There are lots of achievements, and people in the subreddit work hard for their platinum at the highest difficulty level. It’s an action RPG, you have skills, you get skill points to distribute to make a build. You have a fairly open world to explore. It’s also a game that rewards player skill. Yes, you read that right, player skill, not character skill. You have every character skill in the game and still suck. It’s not an easy game there is a progression curve, you will die a lot at the start, and there is some leeway for button mashing. But you will have a hard time with the bigger machines unless you gitgud.
If you have a PS4, (I’m running it on a Pro) Then it’s a “must have” if you wait a while, it’s coming to PC too.
tldr? Buy it, it’s fabulous!
Coming with the Frozen Wild expansion, as well as new difficulty ‘Story’ if you just want to enjoy the game if they are usually challenging for you, you can immerse yourself in this beautiful world! Gameplay, graphics, music and story are top notch!
This is surely one of the best games to have come out in the last ten years. We are all familiar with post-apocalyptic survivor video games, and the environments always look suitably dystopian, but HORIZON ZERO DAWN is post-post apocalypse, when Nature has had time to grow again. Navigating this open-world game is akin to playing the more beautiful maps of the Tomb Raider Reboots, or the exotic locations of the Uncharted franchise. But this is no paradise, no complacent brave new world – there is an ever-present mortal threat to your character, Aloy, from mechanoid beasts (some of whom resemble dinosaurs) to human bandits. The gameplay mechanics are exciting (lots of parkour), weapon modding system and skill tree encourage the player to explore, scavenge, and complete quests to gain parts for ammo and potions and, of course, XP. The narrative also keeps things interesting as Aloy ventures into the machine world’s history, all the better to understand both herself and the world she now lives in.
Two elements of gameplay that are particularly exhilarating are the stealth kill, which allows you to sneak around in long grass and take down a robot enemy, and the reckless-looking rappel from bone-breaking heights.
This game boasts a huge map, with every wild environment you can think of – forests, mountains, deserts – and, if you buy this edition, you’ll get the FROZEN WILDS expansion pack added on, which provides even more thrilling gameplay in a frigid landscape of snow and ice.
And ALL of this came as a surprise to this reviewer who, cards on the table, went into the game expecting something more closely resembling a dystopian teen movie. I am a veteran of Dying Light, Resident Evil, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, and the Tomb Raider Reboot Trilogy, and did not have high expectations of a game whose graphics looked so “pretty”, a heroine that looked as though she belonged in The Hunger Games, and enemies that were essentially Robosaurs, but this has proven to be a hidden gem. I absolutely love this game and will certainly be playing it again. I took a chance and was richly rewarded; you owe it to yourself to do the same.
Bought this game having some reservations after reading reviews as I am not good with action games but luckily this game allows you to play as you prefer, stealth or direct attacks. Highly recommended!
So I’ve been a massive final fantasy/kingdom hearts fan and needed something to fill the void KH3 left in my world, so picked this game up. I was a little skeptical how it would be given it looked a bit like a first person shooter, but the combat actually felt really fluid. The aiming is forgiving to a degree, aiming from a distance isn’t as bad as I thought it would be (although still has a decent skill curve), and nothing really felt too overpowered (although near the end being able to fire 3 arrows at once toed the line a bit).
The story was really good – you didn’t feel obliged to participate and I ended up doing so many side quests I was about 20 levels higher than the story recommended levels by the time I carried on down that path which was amusing. There’s enough side content in the game to keep you occupied for hours.
Only criticism I did have was the armour didn’t really feel like it made much of a difference (same with the mods on the weapons). I just ended up getting the chieftain armour set that let you regen health (OK, that one was a bit overpowered) and slapped a few physical protection mods on it, nothing more. It should encourage you for switching armour sets out more in my opinion, but that was a fairly minor point in the grand scheme of the game.
So yeah, definitely recommend this game.
Interesting concept, stunning graphics, good combat but only having one melee weapon makes it a bit stale after a while. The face animations are also very bad at times, and disconnect me from the story and characters heavily. The game is not very innovative but certainty held my interest to the end.
Plenty of invisible walls which i am never a fan of in open world games, but the things it does well it does very well.
The music is very fitting and never fails to set the right tone. The ranged combat is very good, constantly using projectiles in creative ways, like being able to notch more than one arrow on your bow to kill enemies quicker, and tear of enemy parts with less than one shot. The story increasingly gets better as you try to discover what happened to the past and discover yourself. Although the middle is pretty boring, the ending is well worth the wait, over my 40+ hour play-through
This is an amazingly crafted game with extensive attention to detail throughout.
Dynamic fighting styles allow you to approach every encounter differently, whether you want to go head-on or be highly strategic in dealing with the different machines.
Highly recommended as I was able to get 80hrs out of this game!
I’ll start off with what I didn’t like:
* I was sold a copy of the game, -1 star.
* Some of the facial expression animations are terrible and barely even look like what they’re supposed to.
* The ‘bonus weapons’ you can get quickly become useless.
* The frame rate in some areas is terrible.
* No customizable items other than face paint, but you only get those AFTER completing the game.
Here’s the good stuff:
* The graphics are fantastic. I was genuinely surprised at how good they actually are.
* The hard difficulties are actually hard. Ultra-hard is a real challenge!
* The storyline is great! Lots of collectibles around the world for additional information about the story.
* The audio design is brilliantly done. Each of the enemies and animals in the world have their own specific sounds so you can identify them.
* The DLC adds in a really nice area with some much tougher enemies and stronger gear for your character.
* Lots of collectibles around the world for extra gear and money.
I liked the game that much I’ve 100 percented the game + DLC and have all trophies
Without going too much into details, this game presets post-post-apocalyptic planet as it develops. The apocalypse that befell this planet is presented via various voice-logs and story missions. This is one of my favorite open world games to date.
Once of the best games i’ve ever played in my entire life, and i’ve played a lot of games. Its visually stunning, has a fantastic story line, a vast and detailed world and interesting and unique enemies. If you have a PS4 then you absolutely have to buy this game!
As probably anyone of similar age (I’m 34) — finding time to play is a challenge, so it’s quite important to pick only the best games out there not to waste that precious time on average products. There are plenty of good games on this generation of consoles — especially PS4 (I own Xbox One too), but no matter what list of recommended games you are googling for — Horizon will surely be in top 10, if not top 5. At first, after playing it for 10 hours I got a feeling of lack of variety in missions and wanted to write a 4 star review. Today, after getting a platinum trophy (yesterday) and finishing everything possible in the main game and Frozen Wilds DLC — I’m happy that I waited so long and didn’t share my thoughts before. How long? Well, it took me 56 hours to finish it all and I must say that I want more. Usually I find 20-hour long games too long, so that says something.
This game blows you away by everything it has to offer. Amazing graphics? Yes, among the best ones out there. Great story? Sure is — I was always curious to see how it evolves and ends. Fun gameplay? Oh yes, really good combination of stealth, action, climbing and puzzles — it feels very balanced. As someone who loves stealth so much — this was my main approach with enemy encounters and there are many of these. Enemies in general are amazing — whoever was the lead character designer is a genius.
Content wise it’s also a good game. There are many main missions, side quests, errands, 5 hunting grounds (6 if we count Frozen Wilds), bandit camps etc. I was really happy to see that even though there is so much content — there aren’t many collectibles. Something which Ubisoft does wrong, but these guys somehow nailed it. It’s not like I hate collectibles, but I never go for Platinum if I don’t find a game being really good and if a game has too many of grinding/collecting activities. I don’t care about trophies to be honest, but in this game, I got vast majority by just playing and trying to do as much as possible that I realized that I don’t have to do much else to get the rest.
I’m sure Horizon 2 is coming. I rarely pre-order games, but this would be one of rare cases when I will. Guess this means I loved Horizon. It’s a must play title.
I’ve been playing this game for around 10 hours and so far I really love it. The combat is fun and addictive, the characters are interesting (I haven’t wanted to skip any of the cutscenes, which is rare for me), the world is BEAUTIFUL to look at. This is a must-buy if you have a PlayStation 4.
One of my favourite games of all time. It was refreshing to see a female protagonist like Aloy, who is natural and realistic. I adored the combat, hunting machines and traversing through the wilderness. The graphics and scenery is absolutely gorgeous, the world building and the rpg elements are creatively done. Highly recommend playing this game if you are looking for an awesome action RPG experience and an epic post-apocalyptic scifi adventure!
Greatly enjoyed every minute of this game. As a fan of the Tomb Raider games, it’s a shame this got a bit shadowed by the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, but it was an excellent game. Would highly recommend.
One of the best PS4 games I have Ever played. It made cry when I found out the end of the story, totally recommend for anyone who wants to relax couple of hours after a hard day of work and stress.
Most games I’ll buy second hand but this was cheaper on here. Horizon is one of the best games I’ve played. Totally worth it. Many hours of entertainment has been had.
This has been one of the most enjoyable games I have played over the last 20 + years . As some people have said that the combat is the only part that I feel let’s it down from getting five stars from me . But apart from that everything else is top rate from Aloy herself to the snow and ice of the far north ,with lots of terrain on the way. This game has put a big smile on my face and I can recommend it.
Am now playing it on game plus and it is just as much fun if not more second time round
A must have game for the PS4, gorgeous HDR graphics, one of the best looking games I’ve played. Gripping storyline with countless side quests, and the perfect dlc to finish the story. Can’t wait for the next game.
I played about 3 hours of this game lastnight and honestly had to force myself to put the controller down. I played on easy, on a normal ps4 and had an absolute blast. I am just a little bit after the prooving and would have played for another 7 hours if I didnt have to get up the next day for work. Aloy is played so well, she is a total bad ass.
I can see myself tearing through this game. Its super fun and the story is brilliant. The machines in this are challanging if they get you in numbers and they can sometimes come out of nowhere.
This game is exclusive to Ps4 and I urge anyone with one to get this game and put it in your collection.
I have only put a few hours into the game and when originally release, was compared to Breath of the wild so I was expecting to be amazed from the get go. my initial thoughts, graphically amazing but game play wise, not incredible like the breath of the wild……but then not many games can compare to that so to be fair, that’s not any criticism. I will update my review once I have put more hours into the game to give a fair reflection of my thoughts.
That game was the reason I bought a PS4 Pro.
The game play is one of the best, the graphics are beautiful, the universe is stunning and immersive, plus you get to fight robot dinosaurs with a bow and a spear.
It has action, RPG and infiltration components and gives you a lot of freedom to play the game however you see fit.
I haven’t finished the game but I can’t find a single flaw.
It is one of the few video game masterpieces that justify buying a console on its own.
Waited for this title well after the release date so my expectations were high. Since playing and completing it I can safely say Horizon deserves the praise it received, balance of combat and story is perfect, aesthetically stunning, game mechanics are easy to grasp but its the story that truly shines in my opinion. If you are looking for an original story and are willing to invest 100hrs plus then buy this, you won’t be disappointed!
Game as a game is brilliant. It is easy for me to say that this is the best game I played on PS4.
The only think I don’t like about this version (from Amazon) is fact that I can’t set my language.
One of the best games I’ve ever played, so much to explore, ruins, villages, towns and a superb landscape with so much to collect and gather. A fantastic selection of weapons and ammo to buy and craft which then have to be chosen carefully in order to bring down the many hostile machines that you’ll confront. I’ve been captivated by this game for weeks now and still have so much to explore with quests and errands to fulfill and mysteries to solve, highly recommended.
A fantastic game that has some of the best graphics i have seen on the PS4 to date. The complete edition gives a good level of additional content and new challenging enemies. I would mention that stealth and planning your attacks are key to getting the best out of the game. A run and bow approach will probably end badly until you have leveled up your character. A great game for the price.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a new chapter for Guerrilla Games. Gone are the Helghast and linear levels of the Killzone franchise. Guerrilla has replaced them with a sprawling open world, lavished with collectibles, side quests, an intriguing story, and unreal mechanical creatures. It’s a drastic change for the developer, it appears to have paid off.
Horizon Zero Dawn takes place in the distant future where Earth has been cast back to the primitive ages based on tribes. The wild area is full with a variety of mechanical creatures. Players take control of Aloy, a young outsider who seeks the answers to this world, as well as some more pressing questions close to home. Aloy has never known who her mother was, and as such has been looked down upon by the nearby Nora tribe her entire life.
From its opening scene right through to the end (you may end up putting a lot of hours into this game) the graphics are amazing (PS4 Pro with HDR enabled). The motion capture is second to none. The sound quality of the world is crisp and accurate and the sounds from the creatures is equally as terrifying.
Well worth the purchase especially with the extra DLC.
Fantastic game. Great visuals. Good story. Controls like a dream. Plays like butter. Can be a little difficult at times, but has a decent checkpoint system. If you’re a PS4 owner, this is a must have exclusive and worth every penny.
This came free with my PS4 and I wasn’t even particularly interested in it.
Well let me tell you, I enjoyed every second of it. This is one of the rare games where I actually cared about the story and the world (and even wanted to know more, usually it’s the opposite!). The gameplay itself is flawless, there are no useless features and very little grinding (except maybe picking up health herbs, ugh), everything you do has a reason and purpose. Fun, tense and beautiful. 10/10
Another exclusive from Sony and another great hit from Guerilla Games. What a game, brilliant story, unique and fun gameplay and amazing characters and acting and what a protagonist- one of the best games of the decade if not century. A must have for PS4 gamers and you will regret not playing it.
I absolutely love this game, the graphics are fantastic with a wonderful story arc and plenty of side missions, errands etc in this open world experience. This includes the DLC “The Frozen Wilds” Which has some great outfits and weapons that can be used in the rest of the normal story arc as well. It has a good length of playing time and once you do complete the game, you can then replay the game on New Game+ and your weapons and outfits to buy, get another mod slot to use.
I heard the raving reviews and while I thought the trailers looked amazing, I wondered whether it could really be “the best game ever” and “the game of the year” as people have said. It is. I’m absolutely in love with this game. I’ve been playing it for for a week straight every waking hour and spare minute I have, unintentionally even skipping sleep because I simply don’t notice the passage of time.
The world is breathtakingly beautiful, and full of details that add wonderful variety and sense f realism. The setting is fantastic and the story line is well thought out and interesting. As well as the main quest/story line there are tons of side quests and errands, not to mention fun challenges.I found the weapons system and controls in general very intuitive and easy to learn.
Honestly, one of the best games I have ever come across, and one I’ll surely play through many more times in the years to come.
If you’re looking for a game to enjoy on your PS4 and keep you entertained for months, this is it! Likewise, if you want a game to test out the PS4 PRO’s 4K ability, this is also it!
I bought this game as part of a PS4 Pro Bundle and whilst it’s not a game I knew much about, I am so glad I got it! The graphics, storytelling and cinematic segments of this game are extremely immersive and truly breathtaking.
The game follows the story of Aloy, a hunter living in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future on a planet overrun with robotic animals/creatures and where humanity has regressed to a tribal communities.
Aloy was raised by Rost, a man outcasted by his tribe and so she seeks to find out why she was outcasted too. As a small child, she find an item known as a ‘focus’ which give the wearer special perception abilities – like an augmented reality device overlaying information on what she can perceive. You take on the role of Aloy and play through various stages of her life.
The controls are very familiar to other Role Playing Games (RPGs) and so it is very quick and intuitive to pick up.
The biggest surprise I had with this game is how quickly I became engrossed. I don’t know if its the great opening cinematic scene, the graphics or both.
I do not want to say much more and spoil the plot, but I highly recommend this game and this is a great deal with the additional content.
I think I am going to play it a bit more now!
A superb package. I’ve played the base game before but purchased the complete edition as wanted more and it in no way dissapointed.
The frozen wilds is a superb expansion and took many many hours of my life away.
It’s so addictive and very hard to stop playing once you’ve started.
The base game is amazing and the frozen wilds just adds the icing on the cake. I’d 100% recommend to anyone who has a PS4.
Amazing game, the complete edition is worth every penny of its asking price. I played it, the moment it arrived, and was obsessed with the game, I just enjoyed it, that much. I can see why this game, was on so many Game of the Year lists. The story and world is interesting, and rather colourful, unlike other post-apocalyptic games, list Fallout or Metro.
This game is something else—“Addictive” is an under-statement,–what a refreshing combative experience when one has to collect materials even to survive—and, ironically, unlike other games where one fast-travels at the touch of a button, one has to craft a ticket each time travel is necessary. I am 81 years old,and have played many RPG games, and believe me,this ranks up there at the top, simply for innovation, and a great storyline,–would recommend to serious players who want more than button-bashing.
Was not sure about this game however this must be the best game I have played. I have found that whilst challenging in places it is not impossible which is great as you don’t lose heart (I am 66 and sometimes the speed of the games get to me). I have spent most of the Christmas holiday on this and both me and the wife (she watches and advises) are hooked. I have not tackled the frozen wilds yet as I am building up levels and equipment at the moment. I would recommend this game without hesitation. At the present I usually playing Skyrim however this has taken the backseat now hope the kids I have adopted survive.
Great to see that this is a true complete edition with the game updates and Frozen Wilds DLC on the disc. With complete editions or GOTY editions i will only buy the game if the DLC is included on the disc. Thanks Sony.
The game is simply stunning and is a must for PS4 owners.
