The Kingston DataTraveler 70 – DT70/64GB USB-C Flash Drive in Black offers a portable and convenient solution for storing and transferring data. Here’s a review of its features and performance:
The standout feature of this USB-C flash drive is its compact and sleek design. Its small form factor makes it easy to carry in your pocket, bag, or keychain, ensuring that you can have your important files with you wherever you go.
The USB-C compatibility allows for fast data transfer speeds, especially when used with devices that support USB-C connectivity. This makes it suitable for quickly transferring large files, such as videos, photos, and documents.
The 64GB storage capacity provides ample space for storing a variety of files, from documents to multimedia content. It’s a practical option for those who need to carry important files while on the move.
The black color option gives the flash drive a professional and understated appearance, making it suitable for both personal and professional use.
The plug-and-play functionality makes it user-friendly, as you can simply insert it into a compatible device and start transferring files without the need for additional software installations.
However, it’s important to note that the small size of the flash drive could make it easier to misplace or lose. Additionally, the black color might not be as easily noticeable in certain environments.

=== BACKGROUND ===
64gb Flash Drive cost 3.16 (purchased from Rep. Ireland) on July 2023.
USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 all mean the “same thing”, unless you see “Gen2″ or Gen2x2” at the end.
“Same thing” meaning they all have the speed of 5Gb/s (GigaBITS per second.. note the small “b” in Gb/s), which equates to 0.625 GB/s (GigaBYTES per second.. note the capital “B”).
While the numbers associated with “USB” refers to speed, the letters associated with “USB” refers to the physical shape, eg. USB-C.
I purchased 9 of these. Tested all.
Tested with a Windows 11 laptop with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (handles up to 10Gb/s).
Flash Drive formatted as ex-FAT for testing.
=== SUMMARY ===
– Good: Real life capacity (ex-FAT, Windows 11) is 57.6GB. This matches the average discrepancy of around 10% which is expected due to mathematics and such.
– Good: Hole for lanyard.
– Good: Cap goes on tight.
– Neutral: Flash Drive comes formatted as FAT32. Can format it to ex-FAT for better speed, generally. NTFS is even better, generally. The file system should depend on your use case and your operating system.
– Neutral: Kingston is a reputable brand, but it has been diminishing lately. I would presume due to disappointing durability rather than fake capacity, etc. Even from my own experience, 3 out of 3 Flash Drives from them had suddenly died within a year (1 was even in storage) and 1 set of top quality RAM (Hyper X) died within 2 years. Still better than unknown brands with unknown backgrounds and intentions.
– Neutral: Maximum read 113 MB/s. Maximum write 37 MB/s. Minimum read 9MB/s. Minimum write <0.1MB/s. Rates may fluctuate ~10%. In comparison to other USB 3.2 Gen1 Flash Drives, there can be up to +/-50% differences in maximum read and/or maximum write.
- Bad: Real life write speed 500 MB file: Burst speeds of 30-40MB/s, and average 11MB/s, or just under 60 seconds to transfer the file. Filling disk up to capacity also averages 11MB/s. Real life read speed of the 500 MB file averages 95 MB/s. USB 3.2 Gen1 Flash Drives in general average 60-150MB/s read and average 10-45MB/s write, so these Kingston Flash Drives lie very much on the lower range, especially the write speed. In comparison to USB 2.0, average read is 10-25MB/s and average write is 3-10MB/s.
- Bad: Light plastic construction with flimsy weak point around the connector. Somewhat expected for the price though.
=== RECOMMENDATION ===
- For non-critical use cases, yes I recommend. Great value for money and includes Amazon's customer protection benefits. In real life, it's about 2 times slower than the average Flash Drive, and 3 times slower than the fast ones.
- For critical use cases, if some loss of speed is not an issue and if you acquire the equivalent value for money as I have, then yes I recommend but with caution. There is a durability risk but you should be able to spot the digital and physical signs much before it fails beyond recovery.
- Deducted 1 star for deliberately not disclosing the read and write speed, yet gloating about speeds of USB 3.2 Gen1 (5Gbps) yet it does not reach anywhere near the average expected of 5Gbps, thus creating an intentionally misleading advertisement as such. As Flash Drives are generally used for transferring files, its speed is practically the same as a high-end USB 2.0.
I purchased this memory stick to initially transfer photos between my phone and computer without my cables…
I have now got a phone that hasn’t got support for SD Card storage and this USB has been a godsend for storing all my photos that I don’t have space for.
Would highly recommend this product for anyone looking for a USB-C Drive…
The USB-C stick itself works very well.
It’s fast, only slightly warm during constant 1 hour writing to it.
If you’re using it on a phone with case;
The problem or not, is the base of the connector is bigger than the opening on the phones case.
You could cut the case opening, or trim the stick base.
Would’ve been 5* otherwise.
Having got a new laptop this easily goes at 100MB/s whereas my review underneath was on an old and slow one; so as it’s about the same price and a good make this is a BARGAIN and still goes strong after using it a bit
xxx OLD REVIEW xxx so much for the speed of USB-C and usb 3.2 it’s no faster; thought it might be between usb2 and SSD external drive but nowhere near. Disappointed
Formatted as exFat gets these speeds in RMPrepUSB
Reading drive 1 – please wait …
Read 63.4765625 MiB in 0.515 seconds = 123.2MiB/s READ SPEED
Writing to drive 1 – please wait …
Wrote 63.4765625 MiB in 1.813 seconds = 35.0MiB/s WRITE SPEED
Yes, this is super slow for writing, it’s basically USB 2 with a USB C connection. However, if you don’t mind just walking away and leaving media files to write to the drive, it’s super cheap for storing and playing videos and music from.
I use these for playing up to 100Mb/s 4K video files from and they are perfect. I also use them for playing music from as well, perfectly.
They are super convenient for using on portable devices that use USB C, I’m using them on my iPad Pro and my MacBook Pro M1 Max.
Like I said, super slow for writing but excellent for playing media from, or even storing files on to.
Best bit, they are super cheap for a flash drive with USB C.
Used to store PII to copy / paste to save typing.
IE MIStyping and locking accounts as a result.
Little bit fiddly, USB C can be, but VERY easy to grip to insert / extract; larger than most, that’s WHY it’s easier to use.
LOVE the end cap!
Reads and writes fast enough for me, but I am not using it as a workhorse.
Kingston is a reliable if unglamorous brand – EXCELLENT value for money if only because they are not the higher interface specs.
ALSO THIS one does not get really hot unlike the next gen ones.
I needed a USB C thumb drive to be able to upgrade my Audi NAV. This worked a charm and although it might not be the fastest drive out there it did everything i needed it to do. Remember that this needs to be formatted to ex-FAT if you want to store files bigger than 4gb on it. Once formatted you get 57.6gb useable space.
I did not even realise that usb c pen drives were even a thing, I brought this thinking it was a standard pendrive and didn’t realise until it wouldn’t fit in the computer.
However, for using with my phone, and being able to back up my photos it’s great.
Bought the 1TB and hasn’t let me down. I paid a decent price for it but it is worth it.
Kingston is known for decent quality and long life combined with decent prices and specs.
I do strongly recommend it.
ot the speed they are advertised at but a good price so i can live with it. If you can’t then buy something else. Probably good for throwing at Alison Hammond should you stray near the TV while she is on. Best to avoid the untalented in the first place.
It does exactly what I want.
It’s spare extra storage and I can quickly transfer between my mobile phones and have an extra backup for important stuff.
When you get it, use some PVC tape to attach the cap to the stick, so you don’t misplace it and lose it.
You can use a little piece to cover any exposed adhesive, or find your own way to attach them. It’s annoying to lose the cap.
I did not expect such a cheap, and reasonably well made, USB drive to be particularly fast. In that respect I was half right. See photos for details of the actual speed.
copying one large file, smaller files will be much slower, from an NVME drive to a native UUSB C port on my motherboard and the drive writes around 6 to 8MB/s. Nothing special at all.
However on copying that file to another drive, this time a SSD, the speeds are particularly fast. Again check the photo to confirm.
For our intended use these drives seem great. The only thing missing is a small activity light.
There are two holes on the top corner of the drive, if you wish to place a lanyard or something through it.
I could see the stick’s cap going missing, as it can’t be attached to the rear of the stick when in use.
As previously noted the build quality seems reasonable and for the price the yare good enough. Hopefully they will last, if there are any issues noted with these drives I will amend my review accordingly.
I do recommend these drives, but if you do need very fast write capability then you are best looking elsewhere.
I do hope that this review has helped you.
Happy shopping.
This is fast. When I started transferring music from my Sony phone onto this I didn’t think it was working at first…. it had copied it so fast that I didn’t realise it had done it. Transferring the music to my Samsung galaxy tablet was just as quick. The only thing I noticed was that the available storage is 30gb of the 32gb, you always get a little less with these types of storage devices, SD Cards etc but I think 2gb is more than I expected.
Write speeds slow I got 15-10MB/s read good 100MB/s.
No status LEDs and does feel super cheap and doesn’t fit phones with the case on. Some phones I had to turn on OTG storage toggle in settings for it to work. Worked on Android phone and tablet, formatted the USB as FAT32 to work.
Dunno why people giving poor reviews saying it’s not exactly 64GB, this is not new with how windows reads storage in powers of 1024 instead of a 1000. it’s always about 10% less space.
Right up to Kingston’s usual high quality, data transfer rates on and off are great.
I didn’t realise when I ordered that it has the USB-C connection (my bad for rushing).
I have adaptor so no problem for my PC and will actually be better with my MacBook
This memory stick only has the USB Type C connection so make sure this is the connection you want. 64 GB but about 10% of that is used for the filing system so 56 GB of useable space. It comes formatted as FAT32 so if you want to move any files larger than 4 GB you will need to format it to exFAT. Write speed came up as a respectable 90mb/s with read speed a little faster. Only grumble would be that the guarantee is printed in a font so small you would need the Hubble space telescope to read it. Would recommend.
