Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersCaptain calamari was interesting to look at for baby when they were 2 months old. Fast forward to 5 months and every day there is a full blown Captain versus baby battle in the baby gym. It’s got so much going on, stuff to chew, rings to pull, a mirror for surprise, a crinkly hat and textured legs. My baby cannot get enough of it. This is the favourite toy among all the baby stuff we have. We loved it so much that we bought this as a gift for our friends who are having a baby.

We love captain calamari. My first daughter picked him out of a lamaze toy line up when she was 6 months old. My second has inherited him at 5 months and she too adores him. He’s even been gifted to many friends babies and he’s always a hit. Fun, colourful, lots of lovely crinkly legs to teethe on. What’s not to love . I love that they do fine in the wash too.

Our little one is mesmerised by Captain Calamari!!

Keeps him engaged and entertained when in the car with lots of different textures and colours!

It’s feels like a really quality product made from nice materials.

The clip keeps the captain attached regardless of little ones wiggles!

Would recommended to all to get one!

Our baby has spent many happy hours playing with this. I don’t understand what babies see in toys, but whatever it is this has it in spades. He loves the crinkly hat and arms, rattly shaker, easy plastic grabbers, mirror on the bottom. It is just perfect, the designers must have spent lots of time tinkering and perfecting each and every little detail. It’ll last forever, too.

As soon as I gave this to my 5 month old he was all over it. Lots of grabby parts on it and different parts to chew on and loads of colours and patterns to help with his eye development. I knew he’d love this because he has another lamaze toy but this one he loves more

Really love the mirror on the bottom. Does wonders in keeping my little one entertained. I also like that the rattle and rings hang lower to focus her attention. I find it works best suspended and placing baby under.

The toy is lovely. My grandson loves it. The only problem is that the tentacles are long and he pushed them all the way in his mouth so nearly choked.

Bought this for my 4 month old grandson as an alternative to the other Lamaze Butterfly. He loves Captain Calamar, the colours are eye catching and he loves to grab hold of the tentacles ! I like the size, it is a generous sized toy for a baby, soft and not too heavy for very young hands. The different sounds keep his attention too! The eye Mask is so cute! Would make a lovely gift for any new baby.

Lamaze toys are such great value and quality I can’t rate them highly enough. The textures are fantastic and visually my son
Loves looking at them. He’s 2.5 months but these toys are made to last. A mix of black and white (for early weeks/months) and bright colours as they get older.

The product itself is wonderful, with a variety of textures and interactive sections, one small issue though, my 4 month old is a bidding naturalist and mentioned to me that the name was somewhat incorrect. Two issues, one to name a toy after a food product only insights hunger and distracts my young in from his breast milk, angrily decreeing that he will only ingest calamari now, but also, it’s got 8 legs, not 6 like calamari would suggest, as Bertie said it would be way more apt to cal the toy captain cephalopod. Thanks, he loves i

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersCaptain calamari we mainly bought for the name but it is a wonderful Lamaze toy and now a firm favourite with our five month old. The mirror under the legs is excellent as well as the eye patch which has a starfish under which my five month old enjoys looking under as we play peekaboo. The eight legs have different materials and textures. We have a few Lamaze and this one ranks after Freddie firefly but before Tilly twinkle wings and flapping Fiona.

Love Captain Calamari! My little boy is 4 months now and spends ages playing with this toy he loves it. The legs are easy for him to grab and the different colours and textures and crinkles really interest him 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars Great toy for young babies

My 3 month old absolutely loves this toy! It has been perfect for encouraging the development of her gross motor skills as it is easy for her to grab onto the arms and rings, especially when hung from her play gym. Arms are made from a range of materials so she can experience a variety of textures. My favourite of all the Lamaze toys.

This is my granddaughter’s favourite toy (she was around 2 months old when I bought it – she is now 5 months) It has loads of different textures for her to touch and put in her mouth!! It’s bright and cheery, well made and keeps her engaged for as long as a 5 month old can be !! I would definitely recommend it.

We got this for our baby when he was 3 months old. Its exactly like it looks in the pictures. He chews on everything and we’re yet to have any issues with him doing that to this. Its easy to hold, fun to play with, colorful to look at. Would highly recommend this!

I got it for my five months old daughter for her pram. She really likes it. It is very bright and beautiful and with so many legs with different textures and sounds it is just perfect.

I would highly recommend this product. Would be ideal for car rides as well or even in the home on baby mobile.

This is a great toy. Our 3 month old has just started reaching out for toys and this was a great stimulating toy – the colours, the textures and sounds. She immediately went for the rings and the rattle toy and the mirror gave her great excitement too. Works best when attached not right above her but on the side.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLet’s be honest – I totally bought this due to the name. Who doesn’t find Captain Calamari a great name? While not my daughter’s favourite toy, she does enjoy playing (and talking!) to it. The tentacles in particular are ideal for small hands, and the noises that other parts of the toy make manage to keep her attention for a little while.

Another fantastic product by Lamaze. I have also got the Firefly which is lovely as well.

Would highly recommend this toy. It is colourful with lots of different textures. I have it attached to a play mat my son loves to play under and he certainly loves the addition of this toy. I love the fact that it has a clip so can be clipped on to the pram/pushchair as well.

Really lovely quality at a great price! Cannot fault it!

First time mum here and I was running out of ideas for “awake time” and worrying if i wasnt doing enough to stimulate my 2month old (can they get bored at this age?!) I bought this with the hopes of my son having some interaction or at the very least something different to look at than the walls of his basket, the ceiling and my face.
As far as i can tell he loves it and is even starting to grab/ hold onto the blue rings. Would definitely recommend.

Definitely our baby’s first favourite toy. There are so many toys to choose from but from about 3 months until about 10 months our baby loved this. Each of the legs has a different texture (good if your baby likes to try everything with its mouth!) and the rattle and ring are great to play with. The hat has a crinkly foil sound inside, and the top ring means you can attach it to a pram or car seat as a useful distraction.

We bought a few of the Lamaze toys but this one stood out far and above the rest as far as keeping baby’s interest and lasting a decent length of time. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHe is an octopus who is also a pirate…this is all you really need to know and if you’re not buying him just for this reason alone then you need to sit down and have a long hard look at yourself.

Bought as a gift for sister’s new born girl. I didn’t want to get her anything too girly and when I saw ‘The Captain’ I knew I was onto a winner. Not sure what the baby thinks of it as she was asleep, but The Captain is a winner with her parents so really that’s all that matters.

We saw one of these at a friend’s house and had to have one. Our daughter has loved it from 5 months up to her current age of 8 months. It offers her a choice of colours and textures, a hard ring to play with/chew on, a rattle ball, and a mirror, so she can play with it in different ways for quite a while. The yellow leg with a boot on seems to be her overall favourite, but it tends to vary. It’s also very jolly to look at. So far the Captain has gone through the wash and survived the experience. We like him so much we’ve now bought him for a couple of friends with babies. Highly recommended.

I hated this initially as its not super-cute (to me!) like other toys I’ve seen (the monkey or the pony) but my baby completely fell in love with it!! I was trying to get him a toy that would have a teething ring and a rattle that he can reach when the handle of his Maxi-Cosi car-seat is up. So I just tested this at Mothercare and my little one went WILD. I tried showing him another toy but he almost fell out of his push-chair trying to look at where I’d placed Captain Calamari back on the shelf!

Ordered it from Amazon because of the amazing price. Almost 1/3rd less than high-street stores @ 7.95.

I hand washed it and the colors haven’t run. The cap and every alternate leg makes a lovely crinkly noise and my 5-month-old loves to squeeze them. The rattle and the teething rings are heaven to the very slobbery baby and keep him occupied for hours in the car/pram. Its a pretty big toy but its good in that he can manoeuvre it with his little hands and not-so-good-yet grip.

He hasn’t noticed the mirror at the bottom yet but I don’t doubt he’ll love it when he does.

I highly recommend this. Just rattle it in front of the baby at a local store so you know which toy they like… mine hated the pony etc. Also, get an idea of the size or it might come as a shock – its as big as a small pillow! 🙂

I bought Captain Calamari for my son when he was about 2.5mths – he’s now almost 4mths and has loved the Captain ever since we bought him! We bought it alongside Lamaze Freddie The Firefly and they quickly became two of our son’s favourite toys. They’re quite sizeable, especially compared to most of his other hanging toys, which made the price seem a bit better. Both Captain Calamari and Freddie are colourful and full of different patterns and textures, as well as rings to chew on – perfect for my teething son! One of the two always comes with us when we go out, and he’s never seemed bored when playing with them. I can only imagine he’ll grow to love them both even more as he gets older and is able to do more with them. Highly recommended 🙂

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI already had freddie the firefly when my daughter was a baby so when my son arrived I decided to get some more as these lamaze toys are such good quality and full of developmental opportunities. I ordered captain calamari along with sir prancealot and the knot. Of the three this appears to be the one my boy favours- his face lights up when he sees it- though at 4 months his main interest is sucking the knotty legs! I find this toy unusual from the other lamaze toys in that it has a plain plastic rattle attached to one leg- the other toys of this range that I own have rattles but covered in fabric. I like this one- so does my son, he likes to watch the little balls jiggling around inside the ball. the mirror is perfect for peekaboo games and can always elicit as giggle! It is a nice size- though my sons hands are only able to grasp the legs at the moment as he cannot co-ordinate his arms to grab the head yet!

A brilliant toy- highly recommended to anyone!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersAlthough he’s not exactly spoilt, 7 month old Freddy has a doting Great Grandmother who loves to buy toys for him. Whenever she asks what toys he would like I point her towards the excellent Play and Grow range from Lamaze. The toys in this range are remarkably well made and feature lots of textures and activities for baby to explore and encourage his development. Captain Calamari is no exception and quickly became one of Freddy’s favourite toys.

    Aye Aye Captain

Captain Calamari is a wonderfully made soft toy masquerading as a pirate octopus. At approximately 13cm x 10cm x 25 cm and 110g he’s the perfect size for Freddy to pick up and cuddle, but perhaps a little too large for younger babies. His blue plush head is hugglebly soft and his smiling face (with eye patch) is friendly, almost as if he’s asking to be cuddled. His silky purple pirate hat is filled with a material that just begs to be scrunched so that it crinkles and has a felt feather so give another texture to explore.

Turning Captain Calamari over, he has a baby safe mirror on his underside so that baby can talk to himself. And then each of his eight legs feature different activities and textures. Some of the legs are made of plush material, while others are silky, some contain crinkles while others are simply soft and squidgy. Five of the legs end with knots to be chewed on, while another has a silky foot. Of the other two legs one contains two rings that are the perfect size for Freddy to hold and chew on, while the other contains a rattle filled with tiny balls. Captain Calamari’s final feature is a clip allowing him to be attached to a buggy or cot, which is attached via a `springy’ strip of material which allows the octopus so bounce slightly when pulled.

As a whole Captain Calamari is extremely well made, facial features are sewn into place and having pulled and tugged at all the seams I’m confident that he will be able to survive anything Freddy can throw at him. My only real concern is that Captain Calamari is not machine washable, from experience with Freddy I know that he will get sucked on, and eventually get quite grubby. Mind you, after two months of being played with and `eaten’ he does still look as good as new.

    When Freddy Met the Captain

I was really shocked at Freddy’s first reaction to the Captain, personally I didn’t think he looked nearly as exciting as many of the other Lamaze toys. But obviously Freddy saw something in him that I didn’t and he barely let him go for the rest of the day. Even now a couple of months later, Freddy will still play with his octopus several times a day, and even though he’s not crawling he is quite capable of moving around the room and will make a beeline for Captain Calamari.

How Freddy plays with the Captain has changed considerably over the last couple of months which bares out Lamaze’s claim that the toy will grow with your child. To begin with Freddy was simply interested in the rings, that were just the right size for him to hold and he enjoyed exploring the different textures with his mouth. As time as has gone on, Freddy discovered the mirror and will spend time looking at his reflection and chatting away to the `other baby’. He also spends a lot of time exploring all the different textures and sounds with both his hands and mouth. He can spend a good ten minutes just checking out one arm after the other.

The rattle was one of the first toys he passed from hand to hand, and he can often be found holding that part in front of his face trying to work out how to get at the balls inside it. As well as being used to attach the Octopus to his buggy, Freddy regularly uses the clip as a teether, or simply to hold the Octopus so that he can bash it against surfaces to make a noise. He has hit himself in the face a couple of times when he’s become a little overenthusiastic, but as the toy is so soft he’s not caused any injury.
The final way Freddy interacts with his Octopus is something that’s only happened in the last few days and is something really sweet to watch. You see, Freddy has just learnt to ask for a cuddle by making a very particular “Ahhhhh” sound and he will pick up his octopus and cuddle it while making this noise. All in all, it’s safe to say that Captain Calamari is one of Freddy’s favourite toys, surpassed only by another of the range, namely Freddie the Firefly.

    Learning Through Play

Although a baby will learn something no matter what toys they play with, I do like to buy Freddy toys that go that little bit further towards aiding his development and encourage anyone else buying him toys to do the same. The Lamaze Play and Grow range of toys fit this bill exactly and while the toys themselves don’t change, the way baby plays with them does (as Freddy has shown). This means that the toy that visually stimulates a newborn also helps an older baby develop new skills. Although I must say that I’m not sure that Captain Calamari is the best of the range for a younger baby, as it features far more subdued colours in the range, 4-5 months is probably a better age. From this age upwards, Captain Calamari will help develop baby’s hand-eye coordination as they explore the different textures and are rewarded with the different sounds and feelings. He also aids communication skills, as baby talks to himself in the mirror and eventually works outs that the `other baby’ is actually him. He can also be used to encourage baby to move, if like Freddy he absolutely adores the Octopus. Baby might even use the rings and clip as a teether to soothe his sore gums, And finally as he has such a cuddly body he can provide comfort at bedtime.

    Final Words

While I personally wouldn’t have rated Captain Calamari, the person whose opinion really matters adores him. From the very first moment Freddy laid eyes on this octopus he was entranced and couldn’t wait to get his hands on him. Even now two months later the novelty hasn’t worn off and Freddy will still play with the Octopus at every opportunity. He even had to go on holiday with us and comes on regular trips in the buggy as one of the few toys that doesn’t get thrown on the floor. Therefore I can’t help but give Captain Calamari five stars out of five, simply because he does seem to be perfect for my special little man and has helped him learn through play. Oh and just as a little extra, Captain Calamari does not require batteries.
