Great little kit for jewellery repair, far better than my super glue repairs.
Sure I’ll get more use out of it as I do wiring jobs and loads of diy.
Daughter’s also like doing craft stuff and pyro drawings on wooden boxes etc.
I bought a gas iron from screwfix for the same price and it was total junk and melted and bent after one use! I returned it. This one is faultless, good value and good quality and works perfectly! It even has built in ignition and the screwfix one needed to be lit from a lighter!
i like this produce well made but has a lock on it for continous flame which means it get hot the problem it has no safety cut off so if is accidently drop it keep going which happend to me firstly it cooked my slipper with my foot still in it then a hole in my settee
I haven’t used this item yet but everything seems to work as I have filled it and tested the flame. Really seems like a step up from a wired soldering iron and from what I’ve read before it’s worth getting instead of a cheaper one.
It feels and looks well made. Only time will tell it if lasts.
Overall first impressions are good. I have used it once, and it worked as desired.
One major design flaw though. You have to fully disassemble it to put it back into the supplied case.
They have forgotten to allow room in the foam for the you to put it away with the catalyst and a tip installed. I simply took a knife to the foam, and made room.
Been meaning to get a gas soldering iron for ages and this was on offer at the time so snapped it up
So much quicker at heating up and with no wire it’s easier to use.
Comes with plenty of accessories
Doesn’t take much he to fill it so a can will last for ages.
Overall very pleased with it and with the extended warranty it’s great.
The iron itself is built very well bit of a challenge filling it no fuel gauge so its guesswork full half full. Now is suitable for larger boards Heats really fast. The tips have a vent for the flame to breathe can be a pain if you don’t keep a eye on where it is facing as while soldering one thing the heat from the vent will make short work cooking anything in it’s way. Semi-Precision. Overall a good buy you can turn the flame fully down when resting so gas lasts longer. It is worth buying over cheaper one has a quality feel and build i am happy with it.
The exhaust for the butane comes out near the tip, sideways. Make sure you know this before attempting to solder anything as you stand a real chance of burning the thing you want to solder or, as in my case, the very protection of a cable that I was soldering. It made a total mess of things and necessitated a restart.
Other than that – it’s fantastic and I would not be without it when attempting projects where electricity isn’t easily or safely available.
Excellent blowtorch, nicely put together, quality packaging.
I bought this to replace my ageing Portasol Pro, to use as a high power portable soldering iron to carry out repairs to vehicle wiring, which was a big mistake.
Don’t get me wrong, as a blowtorch it’s brilliant, with enough power to carry out light plumbing work.
But as a soldering iron, although effective, is a pain in the a**e to use.
Firstly, due to the design of the carrying case, the torch must be pretty much dismantled and the tips stowed correctly before you can pack it away, and of course you have to wait til it cools down before you can do so.
This of course means that it has to be assembled before use, which is fine if you’re going to be using it for a while on a long job, but for a run and gun repair, when you factor in assembly (involving the use of tiny spanners to attach your soldering tip to the catalyst) cooling period, and disassembly (again using the fiddly spanners) it turns into an involved operation.
Also, when soldering vehicle wiring in barely accessible places, for effective heat transfer, you need to be able to rotate the body of the iron to present the flat side of the tip to the work, this is difficult to do when the main body is at 90 degrees to the tip.
Again, I must stress that as a blowtorch, it’s as good or better than everything else out there. A lot of my disaffection stems from my own choice, but as a soldering iron, with the caveat that if used as a bench soldering iron permanently assembled for the task is pretty good. For the most part, feels like an afterthought.
I will be keeping this, because, well, who doesn’t want a decent micro blowtorch. But I will be investing in the bigger brother Portasol 125watt, and not, unfortunately the soldering iron brother to this product, which also won’t allow you to stow the iron hot, which Portasol does. Click Off, pop the (heatproof) thermoplastic cap on, pop it into the case, close the lid, done, seconds flat.
