Ok, so this arrived about 2 hours ago, in that time, I’ve been up in the attic, figured out the wiring and got it fitted, paired it up and created my automations.
We’ve a bathroom upstairs and the boy gets up in the night and leaves the lights on (6 spotlights) which is a bit annoying. So I figured I’d go down this route rather than swap all the bulbs for smart bulbs and have an auto off after x number of minutes if left in overnight.
Fitting was pretty easy, only to figure out the internal wiring and where this should go, I positioned above the ceiling.
Paired first time with the smart life app. This is a bit limited for what I need so I also linked that to Alexa and looped into the rest of my routines, but to get the automation I wanted I linked it to SmartThings which is much better for the more complex stuff, is a good alternative to IFTTT and is also a free app.
All sorted in 2 hours.
I’ve now installed 4 of these. Touch wood, I haven’t had any problems with them. It will be interesting to see if they update the firmware to be Matter compliant.
Mine are all hooked up to Google Assistant and Home Assistant.
It would be nice if the Tuya app represented the actual pairing sequence. i.e. as these are designed to be installed in the switch’s backbox, there isn’t much point in having an LED for notifications. Instead, they beep, but the Tuya app suggests they have a flashing LED.
It’s worth installing into the deepest patress/backbox you can get away with, as it doesn’t leave a lot of room, especially if you’re using +1.5mm^2 wire. Maybe the next version will be smaller.
I find the 1 and 2 gang switch modules work well through Smart Life and thus to Alexa. There is one large problem for most UK users. Most houses have a ring main of live and neutral that go to the light fitting in the ceiling or wall but no neutral to the switch plate. I am not an electrician but solved the problem before I bought the modules, but it only works with double or triple switches. The live from the ceiling rose goes to the switch and the load goes back to the ceiling in the same place the live came from, and then down to the light and then the neutral from the light to the neutral in the ceiling rose. I have disconnected one of the two live feeds to a double switch and connected that wire to the neutral ring in the ceiling. In the switch box I jumpered the remaining live to both switches. So both switches in a double switch box have a live feed and the other wire that was a live feed is now the neutral. It works fine. I don’t recommend others to do this but have a qualified electrician do the job. I would also place notes in to switch box that tells others if you ever decide to move.
The alternative is to dig a channel in your walls from the neutral ring in your house.
PS You will need the deeper of the two standard back boxes available in the UK to fit the module behind the switch faceplate. The advantage of this is to allow the polished silver switch faceplates I allready installed throughout the house to remain in place and you can keep your existing switch faceplates too.
Installed and had this up and running in less than an hour. A couple days later and the switch would turn itself on in the middle of the night! Support tried their best but after resetting it several times , still the same issue.
They sent a replacement and it worked perfectly so the original was definitely faulty!
Excellent service and suppo
I have used two of MoesGo smart switches for over a year now and they work pretty much faultlessly. This current offering seems to have been upgraded as the set up process was much easier and once wired up I was up and running within seconds.
Installation in my home was not without issues as the unit does not fit behind the light switch as seen in the promotional pictures and I have to wire it in above the ceiling rose, apart from that the instructions and set up were straight forward.
This is a unique product that converts a normal light switch to a smart switch. It is quite small, though I still needed to extend my back box from the wall. Because this was hidden anyway (part of the reason that I wanted this device), it doesn’t really matter. It does let you use the existing switches, with a very short delay when you activate them (but nothing major). Connection is simple enough through Smart Life app, and it then just works.
2 gangs in one is a nifty trick but even with the small form factor it didn’t fit in the switch box so had to dig the wall and make space for this little box. You would be surprised at the number of wires behind a 2 way switch so wont’t get enough space to be honest to fit anything else 🙂 … i had to cut some extra long neutral and earth wires to make some space but still had to dig that hole to fit it in. Lucky for me i was fixing a splash back so it all hides neatly behind the splash guard. I wouldn’t try to fit this anywhere else though !
Coming to controlling this via the apps… INITIALLY the smart life app recognizes the 2 switches separately but when you link to Google home or Alexa you can just control switch 1 … that’s a big disappointment as now i am thinking to get 2 sonoffs single gang wifi switches there as the Moesgo single one costs 50% more !
BUT 2 WEEKS LATER … the switch 2 automatically appeared in both google and Alexa.. not sure why that happenned.. so now I can control both the lights !
Before you order this it’s extremely important to check that you have a neutral wire running to your light switch. Newer houses have this but if you have an older house it’s worth checking as without a neutral wire this product is quite a pain to setup. Also double-check you have enough space in the backbox to fit this module. If you don’t I ordered a spacer from a DIY shop for a couple of ‘s to give me more then enough room.
Once you have overcome those hurdles the actual is really good. It uses standard Tuya software so it allows to you flash updates and different firmware for different uses. I updated the firmware to allow integration with Home assistant which it works beautifully with. It allows me to turn on and off both lights from my phone or any smart device. It does use the Wi-Fi protocol for this so ensure you have good Wi-Fi coverage where you are putting this module.
Overall I would recommend this only to someone who is confident in messing with their electrics and wants to bring their smart home features to the next level.
No, not the pulp song…oh wait it was blur wasn’t it. Anyway, all the people certainly aren’t using smart life. But plenty are – it’s a sort of standard protocol for non branded imported smart stuff, more common than you might imagine. But, alas totally incomprehensible to hue hubs. So if you already have hue or something else, this is another system to deal with. It does work with the google and alexa (apparently) – and home assistant which is what I use along with node red.
As I mentioned before in another review for these switches, make sure your switches have live and neutral in them, believe it or not it’s possible to just switch live, and then you’re not able to use these at all.
Overall though, I think these are ok, they remind me of the old “home easy” ones I used years ago. But yeah, not zigbee, be aware of that.
This MoesGo mini is not that easy to install. I thought i could do it myself but give up and called for electrician. Big issue is the Thickness of that device, simply it did not fit in my back box in any of rooms i wanted to install it so we came up with idea to hide it in stud wall. That was the only way. So before purchase you must take that to consideration because it is the most important aspect. After installation setting up the app is relatively easy and connecting it to google home in my case was as well. I have to say it is very confusing for google since i have couple light controllers in home and eventually easier for me is to stand up and put light by myself however device seems working fine and doing job like it should.
Neat unit that fits well behind light switch if of course your existing fittings allow. Mine do but if not, a new bigger wall housing is easy to fit. Very good quality device, easy to connect to power supply and hooks up pretty easily to the wifi network. Clear instructions included.
This review is for the MoesGo Mini 1 Gang DIY WiFi Smart Light Switch Module Smart Life/Tuya App and Wireless Remote Control, Compatible with Alexa Echo and Google Home, 1/2 Way
Great quality WiFi module, allows your lights to be turned on and off via an app. Love it. Also connects via alexa. Item was easy to install if you know what you are doing. If not use and electrician.
Would recommend
Great product to make your light switch WiFi enables. I used it on a standard rocker switch and connected it to an echo. Really easy to install and set up. It comes in a smart little box and was surprisingly compact. Definitely recommend these.
Once fitted, this is an excellent gadget to have. It makes being lazy that much easier.
The app is easy to use and works well.
Installation does require some electrical DIY know how and skill. I got a friend to do it for me.
But once installed, these things are a delight.
I found this switch too large for my back box. You also need a neutral wire.
Once installed, things get easier. The app was easy to use and makes it very simple to control your lights from your phone or using Alexa.
This is kind of a ‘starter’ product but does work perfectly well – just make sure it’s compatible with your existing light switches before buying or you may need to get an electrician in.
Works well, no longer tied to certain bulbs. The back box was a little small so I got an extender (just a square of plastic cost a couple of pounds) it made all the difference and looks great. Works via Alexa or if the internet is down the light switch works as normal. Clever and unobtrusive.
This is a compact and useful device for anyone venturing into ‘smart home’ territory, but more of a modern gadget as opposed to a real necessity. Although small, it won’t fit into all light switch boxes (you may have to invest in a deeper box), which was the problem I encountered, and ended up fitting it in the garage. It was easy enough to install, but a little time consuming to set up, and after that, it works as advertised. You can still use your light switch manually, so you can turn your lights on and off the old fashioned way should you encounter Wi-Fi connection issues, which is possibly this little gadget’s best feature.
Now I’ve already got a zigbee hub and the requisite bulbs to go with it
The problem is that some bulbs just don’t come in zigbee flavours
So I needed to add this to the actual socket
Since I already use the “smart life” app (that’s the western skin of the tuya app), I thought I would try these out
I would suggest if you aren’t confident in handling electrical sockets, you may want to leave it to a qualified electrician
Plus you also need to make sure that your backplate can take the extra moesgo being nestled in there too (you can get spacers which allow you to connect to the wall without leaving a gap
I’d make sure you turned any nearby smart life plugs etc off whilst pairing just to give the socket an easier time connecting without getting the app confused
Overall I’m pretty pleased that I can now turn on those lights with my phone as well as automate them to tie into my smart home set up
Hope this review prove helpful to you
Unit fit into socked easily and wiring was not difficult. Easy to follow instructions. App loads everytime without problems and is easy to use. Linked up to our Google home without problems and has been a great update to our home.
Nice priced gadget to upgrade our home with some smart technology.
I originally ordered this to use for my hall and landing lights however I totally forgot that the wiring at my switches has no neutral wire, so instead I will be using it inline for voice control of my bedroom table lamps.
I tested it with some temporary wiring and it works very well with no problems connecting to my devices.
If you have a new build house or have had re-wiring done lately then you should have deeper boxes and a neutral wire at the switches, so this unit would tuck into the box behind the switch nicely.
It looks well made and clearly marked for the connectors with a wiring diagram if you need it.
Recommended but check that you have the neutral wire before ordering.
This MoesGo Mini 1 Gang DIY Wifi Smart light switch module is great! its small and compact! It comes with a mount which you can mount if you prefer it. Nice and clear instructions on how to install it. For me its easy to install you just need a neutral wiring. But easy to follow and easy to connect now its more easier to switch on the light using my phone
I really like these WiFi switches. They are very small and can be fitted into the larger back boxes if needed. The only problem is a neutral wire needs to be run if you decide to house it there. The best thing is these devices allow the existing switches to operate in conjunction with the WiFi control. I have decided to buy the dimming version to try as well.
The MoesGo mini WIFI Smart Light Switch model I received was the MS-104B capable of controlling two lights on the same circuit through WIFI.
The unit comes with clear instructions, the module itself, and a mount in case you want to mount it to a DIN rail rather than the more normal within the wall socket.
This module is designed for use with normal rocker switches as you would find in UK light circuits and provide on/off functionality via both the normal light switch and WIFI Control.
There are three things to consider before you attempt to use this device.
1. The available depth of the box behind the wall socket, is it large enough to accommodate the module, wires and any parts of the old switch that take up some of that case. In my case there was 45mm between the back of the box and the front of the wall, and the unit fitted OK.
2. The module needs a neutral wire, so if it is not present you will need an electrician to rewire the light socket with a neutral wire.
3. You must have a 2.4Ghz network in order to setup to the module.
In my case the neutral wire was already in place. So turn of the power to the lights, a quick rewire of the light switch, turn on power again, and I was ready to go.
The first test is to use the switch to control the light, on/off – all OK.
In order to connect to the module to WIFI I used the Smart Life app. First thing was to set phone to use the 2.4GHz WIFI, then ask Smart Life to add a new device.
Ensure the WIFI SSID is correct and enter the WIFI password, if you don’t enter a password Smart Life will assume it is blank and you will fail to setup the module. Before continuing you need to set the module into its configuration (reset) mode. I found this the hardest part of the setup. You have to switch the light on/off via the physical switch five times in succession, stopping with light on., and the module will acknowledge configuration mode by beeping continuously. I found I had to repeat this may times before the module started beeping.
Once the module is beeping, press continue on the Smart Life app and the eventually the module will be recognised. You now have WIFI control over the switch.
In the Smart Life App you can rename both switches, the module, and even set a different icon, or picture, for the module.
Once setup the module works well and can easily be controlled via the Smart Life app, you can also set it up for Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. If your WIFI goes down, you can still use the manual switch to control the lights.
As the module is always powered you can turn your lights on or off via WiFi, even if you have set them to the other state via the manual switch.
So in summary, a good WIFI module to control lights, allowing you to use ordinary lights rather than the more expensive WIFI lights. Of course if you don’t have a neutral wire present at your switch there is the expense of wiring one in.
The minor irritation is in getting the module to enter configuration mode, I wish they had put a small reset switch on the module rather than depending on switching the light on/off 5 times, as I found I had to repeat the sequence many times in order to get it to work and I was half expecting one of the neighbours to call round and see if I was in distress flashing the lights on and off so many times.
The product looks very beautiful and very small. To be honest, I bought these for my idea and put them in the chandelier, but then I modified all the concepts and then put them in the main wiring of the house electrical system In the box.
