Why Feed Birds?
Due to significant agricultural changes and urbanisation over recent decades, natural food resources are even more scare. This is why it is essential to feed garden birds all year round to aid their survival. Once you have started to feed the birds it is important to continue and keep a routine, as they will become reliant upon your help.
Top Tips
- Place feeders at least two metres away from hedges or trees to allow birds to escape from predators.
- Put food out at the beginning of the day to ensure that birds can replace the energy they have lost overnight.
- Always ensure garden birds have plenty of fresh clean water for drinking and bathing.
- It is best to have multiple feeding sites in the garden to prevent overcrowding.
- Clean feeders and drinking areas regularly with a mild disinfectant.

very well designed and constructed EXCEPT for the plastic plugs that hold on the lid (and hanging wire). These plastic plugs “wear” badly – very quickly – we had to replace them them with strong wire . Since we replaced the plugs, the birds (Paraquets) have not yet managed to knock it off it’s hook.
Can’t fault this feeder, it deters the bigger birds, they’re not interested in it at all, which is what I was looking for.
Easy to fill, it comes with a clear plastic tube with a chain on top, you insert it into feeder, fill with Nyger seeds and carefully remove the tube. Voila!
This feeder takes suet pellets as well as sun flower hearts, I have 2 now, it’s great for small birds, don’t fill to the top about halfway or less, the bigger starlings find it more difficult when food gets lower.
Sturdy and well made. I was worried that the holes were too small but the birds took to it straight away. No trouble since with squirrels who broke into my plastic sunflower feeder and ruined it.
I had a different nyger seed feeder for over a year and not one goldfinch. Now they have appeared on this new feeder within a week! The old one is in the bin!
Feeder attracts most small birds. I was a little concerned the highly ‘metallic’ appearance compared to more usual mesh feeders might have made this style a little less attractive. I need not have worried.. they like it just as much!
I already have two feeders which are similar to this as I have a flock of mixed finches that come for the sunflower hearts. Finches like to use these types of feeder as it gives them a better lookout for any potential predators The feeder is sturdy and the holes are just the right size for the sunflower hearts. Yes there is mess as the finches tend to ‘dehusk’ the seeds even though there aren’t any husks on them, but any mess is quickly hoovered up by ground feeders. The very nature of the feeder does mean that seeds can get wet but I don’t find this a problem as the seeds don’t hang around long as the feeder is well used. They are super easy to clean with the base coming off. Definitely recommend this product if you are looking to feed finches.
Wire bird feeders have been ruined by squirrels within a couple of days, so I was delighted this has been squirrel proof for 2 months. Yes, weatherproof and sturdy for 2 months. But now the base has fallen off, and tricky to refix. So I phoned Westland, and they were very helpful. The squirrels have obviously worked out how to remove the spring at the base, so for now I have secured and covered it with duck tape till I can get some wire to hold it in position.
This feeder looks very smart and so far has held up to the close attentions of squirrels, but having holes like a nut feeder does mean that as you fill it up, small sunflower seed pieces in the bag fall through the holes. Also the capacity is not really that big meaning it does need frequent filling. The main problem though is the fact that the lid has no fastening and just rests on the top – I can lift it up with my little finger – in our garden it is essential for the lid to be secure , so my husband made an arrangement of cable ties which works well to keep the lid down .
A quick update from my original review (below). It is now the 21st Jan, bought the unit on the 12th and I have replacement parts to fix the issue. It’s nice to see a responsive customer service that doesn’t try and wriggle out of ownership. Emailed them with my problem, they asked for photos and 24hrs later I had 2 clips to stop the squirrels getting their feast.
Having had 4 wire nut feeders destroyed by squirrels in the past 2 years I decided to bite the bullet and buy an expensive, heavy gauge, stainless steel one. Filled it up with nuts, put it out for the birds, checked on it 5+ minutes later and the squirrels had pulled the spring clip off forced and the green plastic bottom off!
Tightened the curvature of the spring and put it back together with more nuts and the following morning the same result. Not sure if it is a failing of the design or just this one.
We have goldfinches around, but until this year I havent been putting out nyger seed specifically for them. I bought this feeder after a bit of research, plus my experience with a similar style peanut feeder from RSPB.
Its very well used by the goldfinches, plus the various tits and even sparrows have had a go. We have grey squirrels which visit the bird feeders and all of my feeders have to be squirrel ‘proof’, meaning they dont get damaged by the wee pests, and so far the nyger feeder has been unharmed. Its easy to fill, and the plastic liner does help limit spillage. Its also easy to disassemble for cleaning.
However, its not weatherproof. During the late summer, seed at the bottom of the feeder started to sprout. To avoid wastage, I needed to limit the quantity of seed in the feeder.
Having holes all the way up also means birds have a lot of access; but it also means there is a lot of space for rain to get in, and a lot of holes for seed to drop out of. There has been a LOT of seed dropped on the ground underneath; so much so, that I am planning a modification to hang a catching tray underneath.
I dont have another nyger feeder to compare with, but I would imagine a ‘port’ feeder would not lead to so much dropped seed. However, such a feeder would almost certainly be destroyed by the squirrels, so overall I am happy I went with this product and OK with giving it 5 stars despite the small issues.
i brought this type of feeder due to the goldfinches wasting a lot of seed as the feeder I had was plastic so the squirrel was biting through it and as it had 4 perches the goldfinches Would sit there and protect it from the robin and blue tits and great tits and for every one they eat they would drop 4 on the floor so the feral pigeons would sit on my roof waiting for the goldfinches to feed and they would be up to 6 pigeons eating the sunflower hearts being dropped on the floor .So this feeder arrived and I put it up on a tree where the other plastic feeder was and nothing eat from it for 1 day so I put a message up asking if the shape and size of the feeder is big enough for the birds to eat from and thanks
For your replies and yes the feeder is perfect no waste from the goldfinches and the diamond shaped holes means they can’t get more then one out at a time and there’s no perches for dominating species to sit on plus the squirrel tried to see if it could bit through the tough stainless steel and it was only trying for 30 seconds and off it went in defeat I will put some peanuts in a open feeder on a tree for the squirrel as I’ve nothing against no animals this feeder is a great and cheap too for the sturdiness of the material used
So far, so good, this nyger seed bird feeder certainly seems sturdy enough, the biggest drawback is the fact it has no perches for the birds who don’t like to cling to the sides so I have fashioned some from some ground pegs I have. The idea of the plastic insert looked good on paper but I didn’t use it at all because of the pegs I put in but in fact very few seeds fell out in proportion to the amount I poured into the feeder. The birds do seem to love it and from filling it on Sunday to this Tuesday morning nearly half the seeds are gone so the birds are making great use of it. Would have been 5* all round if they had just made a couple of perches!
I bought this several years ago to attract a ‘charm of goldfinches’ it has been entirely successful. Regularly I see twenty or more gorgeous little colourful birds queuing up and happily feeding. I knew they live nearby because I had glimpsed goldfinches around my ordinary bird feeders, but I realised that they are shy and would take some time to check this out and decide it’s ok.
It is easy and tidy to fill because the manufacturer has thoughtfully included a plastic tube/sleeve with chain handle to use just when filling. When the feeder is full, you slide the plastic tube out, and hang the feeder. Using the internal sleeve means less mess, falling out, of those precious, expensive seeds.
The feeder is well made, strong and looks to last. As it is all metal it does look tough and safe. The perforated stainless steel has hundreds of holes for the birds to pluck out the seeds, as they love to do. Always a fascinating, colourful and rewarding sight.
There is a two year guarantee to register for, which is reassuring. Although this might be just a clever marketing idea, as they ask for your address to send further info . I am pleased to say that this has been a joy to use for several years already. Everyone who visits is charmed by my charm!
