Asdy’s bulbs he older version they are half the price when I bought mine there was also about you that could be applied when buying from Amazon warehouse taking each bulb down to about 6
Very handy to have Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi although I would say that they are not as quick as the newer version nothing major once you get used to i
I already had some Hue light bulbs along with a Hue hub, which you need to make them work with an Alexa device. So this bulbs were an addition. I find that the bulbs work as…lightbulb. Alexa lets me issue voice commands to turn on/off or dim them.
Things have move on since I purchased my first bulbs and hub, I understand now there are other makes of bulb that do not require the hub.
I love these bulbs and they are energy efficient. I can control them through my Alexa Dot by saying lights on/off without having to move. Nice and Bright at 100% and it dims down to 20% when a Bright light isn’t required. I didn’t have a dimmer switch so this is ideal. No more waking up in a dark room and going over to the light switch. I just say ‘lights on’. Definitely would recommend
With the addition of Bluetooth to Hue, you don’t necessarily need a hub to drive the lights anymore if you’re using Alexa. However, the reliability when using Bluetooth mode is frankly awful. They want to lose connection and then will never reconnect even after a power cycle. Worse yet, the firmware some bulbs ship with require a hub to reset the bulb so if your Bluetooth is causing major issues and you don’t have a hub, you’re screwed. So first thing you have to do is download the Hue Bluetooth app on your phone and update the bulbs. After that, they’ll work perfectly and be very reliable with the benefit of being resettable without a hub.
Bought these for bedroom lamps so we could have a silent alarm and wake up to gradually increasing light instead. These are the first smart bulbs I’ve tried and initially they were found by Alexa almost instantly. When I added them to the Philips Hue app and performed a software update though they stopped working with Alexa. In the end I gave up on the app, did a factory reset and Alexa immediately found them again. Since then all has been perfect.
The bulbs are wonderfully bright considering they are just 9w. Love the ability to dim them to any level and setting up a routine on the Alexa app to turn them on in the morning was very easy. They can be named so you can control individually or as a group. We now have them coming on at a low level and then increasing the brightness by 20% every 10 mins until they are fully bright, a really comfortable way to wake up in the morning instead of the sudden shock of an alarm going off.
Suspect I’ll be buying more soon to make the rest of the house a little smarter!
My first purchase of any of the Hue products so, I have no bridge or additional Hue switches or sensors.
The bulbs worked exactly as described and were easy to control from my phone using the Hue Bluetooth app. I can turn the bulbs on and off and adjust the brightness easily on each bulb. Brightness wise, the bulbs are very good and were far better than the non-LED energy saving bulbs that were replaced.
Having had the bulbs a few days, I started to find the lack of any automation features without a Hue Bridge to be a frustration. Yes, I can control each bulb individually but, I can’t group the bulbs into a room or a zone to control them both together.
I’d recommend anyone starting out with these smart bulbs should go for a starter pack containing a hue bridge. Just Bluetooth on its own works but, in a very limited fashion.
Had these for around 6 months now, so think I’m in the position to write a review.
The annoying thing currently is when a flat mate uses the physical switch and renders them useless until they are turned back on. But aside that they are an excellent addition to any home. Especially with Alexa, Razer or even IFTTT integration!
The price point may still be a little high for some people, but the ability to turn my lights off if I have left them on while at work. To slowly turn them brighter in the morning to help aid waking up, and to turn down at nighttime, or when my partner gets nearby is just a step in the right futuristic direction!
If you’re tossing up the idea of colour or white/ambient, the colour is a lot more of an investment as it requires other purchases to make it less gimmicky, e.g to use with a TV. Although it does work with PC’s natively.
I think the white is currently where the money is at for bulbs, and for colour I would go for the ‘bar’
I saw some reviews that made out it was difficult to set these bulbs up, but in my experience…. 1. put light bulb in and switch it on. NOTE: These bulbs must have power maintained permanently! step 2. ask Alexa to “discover devices” 3. After Alexa has discovered “first light” test it by saying “turn on/off first light. THAT’S IT!! Job done.
caveat : Power must be maintained to the smart bulb permanently – you can no longer use the physical switch to turn this off now or else it will lose the wifi signal to alexa and won’t communicate.
extra setting up : go to alexa app on your mobile phone and go to devices, find “first light” and edit name to what ever you want, example, “dining room light”. Then you operate smart bulb by saying “turn on/off dining room light”.
I only ordered this product 24 hours ago and they are up and running as expected, not as bright as a “normal” 100w bulb but as good as a 60w and they are dimmable (via alexa – “turn dining room light to 50%”)
I would recommend this product and will probably be ordering more in the future – cos the futures bright?
Bought these for a landing and children’s room main light.
I was very impressed by the Alexa integration – just plugged in and switched on at the light switch, and it immediately found the network and registered as ‘First Light’, and I could change the name of this to ‘Landing Light’ just by asking Alexa to rename it. I didn’t even have to go into the app!
Voice commands for on/off are easy ( Alexa, turn landing light on ), though setting brightness levels is a bit of a try-it-and-see approach. ‘Set landing light brightness to half’ or ‘full’ works, and you can also set any percentage level by giving it a brightness and then a number from 1 to 100.
The brightness at full is quite fine for our use. As always with Alexa setting up extra voice commands, or timed routines is easy.
These aren’t the cheapest smart bulbs around, but I will be buying more of them.
With the old bulbs, they would have to get up and walk to each side to switch the lights on. Now they just say “Alexa, switch all the lights on” and both lights come on! They can also switch them on and off independently if they want to! The lights are way brighter than their old bulbs when on full blast but they can dim them now too!
Best of all, these bulbs just work with the Alex echo device that they were bundled with. The Philips Home hub device isn’t needed to use these.
My parents are over the moon with these bulbs and it makes them feel like they’re living in the future!
Got these with a echo in the Black friday event, thought i’d give smart bulbs a go. easy to install, just plug them in, turn them on, and download the Hue app, it then sets it up, once they are in the app, you can ask Alexa to find new devices, and away it goes. You can then rename then in the alexa app to whatever you want.
Brightnesss is decent at 100% so much so that we rarly have them on 100% but you can tell alexa to put then only any percentage you want. It is a warm white but its not a really orange warm, which I like. We’ve set up so routines so they come son in the morning at a certain brightness, which works great.
Overall I think they are great, and the missus loves them, so much so she wants to buy some more.
There is a quite a lot I like about these bulbs :
1. They came in a bundle with an echo device and were very good value
2. They don’t need any extra hardware (i.e bridge) to work
3. I didn’t even need to install yet another app – they worked out of the box with the Alexa app
4. I like the light itself and the fact they dim up and down when turning on and off and that they are dimmable
I knocked one star off because compared to my Amazon plug that controlled the non smart lamp that this replaced, the response via Alexa is not instant – probably about a second from saying ‘light on’ or ‘light off’ for the action to happen.
I received 2 bulbs each stamped 806 lumen, A60 9w, 80mA 2700k.
This is not the 10w claimed in the specification panel but these 9w bulbs are much brighter than the 11w bent tube eco bulbs they were replacing. The replaced bulbs were about 3/4 years old and I understand the older tube eco lights do deteriorate after time but I’ve always hated the miserable dull yellowish light they give off so replacing the bulbs was a priority when I bought the house a few weeks ago.
LUMENS
I have read articles saying we should be judging eco bulbs on the lumens and not the wattage. But even then it’s not that simple as you have to look at “useful lumens”. Lumens are a measure of all the light a bulb emits including to the sides and on to the ceiling. The shape of this bulb probably increases the useful lumens by directing the light down and less to the sides and above. They seem better than the older shape.
Regardless of technical complications these give an extremely good clear light to my rooms and I am more than happy with them.
If you are replacing older bent tube 11w bulbs you are going to be very pleased with them.

I have a Hue hub and have not tried controlling them direct from Alexa.
COLOUR TEMPERATURE
The 2700k is a measure on the kelvin scale of the warmth or coolness of the light emitted. You can find charts of various k ratings for light bulbs. Those older tube eco bulbs must have bern really low on the scale. I have always hated the miserable depressing yellow light they gave off. Perhaps they have improved over time but I still disliked the light of the ones in my new house which is only 3/4 years old.
I have previously tried bulbs with bright white cornrow LEDs but the harsh blue light they gave was just as awful in the opposite direction. These bulbs seem a good compromise.
I do prefer a clear white light in the kitchen and had LAP white spots in the kitchen of my last house. Replacing the kitchen lighting is my next task in my new house.
In the past I did try bright white spots in the guest bathroom and guests really hated them. Horses for courses!
