How to fill cracks in wood

Before you start

  • Test the filler on a small, hidden area of wood to make sure you’re happy with the colour.
  • If you are, lightly sand the area that you’re going to fill.
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe away any loose bits.
  • Leave it to completely dry before you fill it.

Application

  • Push the filler firmly into the hole or crack. Leave it slightly raised above the wood to make sure the repair is properly filled.
  • Before the filler dries, smooth it with a wet knife.
  • If the hole is quite deep, fill it in 5mm layers waiting two hours between each layer.
  • After two hours, you will be able to drill, sand, plane, file, nail and screw into it.

i added a little water to the product as it was a little dry and i wanted to get it into a very small gap, but once i had done this it was great, i used a putty knife so no need to sand, then varnished over it, it is lighter than pine but it looks ok

Almost the perfect shade for use with birch ply (it’s slightly lighter than totally perfect), easy to spread without being like cheese spread.

Dries at a reasonable speed when applied, leaving long enough for you to remove any excess, but the tub dries out/hardens slightly beyond what’s ideal for use when exposed to open air for 5-10 minutes. This is a tiny gripe, just worth noting. I’ll definitely be buying more.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersWhen choosing fillers I look for a balance of ease of use against the quality of the end result. When working with wood and looking for large areas to fill or exceptionally strong repairs I tend to go for a two part filler. For simple small filling jobs around the house I go for Ronseal Multi-Purpose Wood Filler. The container has a screw top and when opened the filler has a plastic sheet covering the surface which stops it drying out. The filler is premixed and is very easy to apply using a small spatula. Excess filler can be wiped away using a wet cloth and the surface can be smoothed using a wet knife.

I do not think multi-purpose filler works well in deep holes (where I use two part) but for all other uses it produces a good finish that is incredibly easy to work with. You will find that the filler in some projects benefit from early post filling sanding etc and others benefit from leaving for a while.

    General comments:
Colour: Natural seems to be the lightest colour
Cleaning: Do not leave cleaning tools until the following day. The filler washes off with water immediately after use but requires chipping away if left until the following day.
Consistency: The filler can become a bit hard after a while. It can be rejuvenated by adding some water to return it to the consistency it was when purchased.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought this to repair a ukulele. Durable but isn’t easy to work with. It is putty like but not easily spread, and does like to crumble in fingers as drying.

Best application method I came up with was apply with your fingers, pushing into the gaps, slightly wet a finger and smooth, the finish with a putty knife or some old card you had.

Docked a star as the colour of these is always too white for ‘natural’ and doesn’t always take stain very good. I’ve still got more work to do to finish the repair so it will be much more seemless but do bear this in mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest to use but gets the job done

This seems a bit dry. I found it difficult to work into the wood. It just peeled off as I tried to blend it into the old wood. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. I managed to get to work in the end and repair my window ledge but it took a lot of layers and was very soft to sand down.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUnless I want the pure strength of two-part resin filler, this is always my first choice for all the minor faults and dings in softwood. The natural colour is a good match for redwood but I’m usually painting it. If you are using stain do a test first to make sure it takes stain the same as the surrounding wood. If not you might need to find a colour that matches or go for wax filler sticks.

luckily I only needed a small amount, The picture gives the impression the tub is bigger than what it is. probably get a better deal and more volume shopping around.

I used this to fix a door that had rotted we were unable to get it fixed straight away but needed to do something this done its job, we did need to re do it but that’s because it’s on the outside, we have a new door now but it was definitely good for a cheaper fix.

Works well for filling holes and gaps in wood. Used on chiseled door frame to fill in hinge spaces. Drys hard and can be sanded and painted.
On the downside the pot is so small it’s difficult to get the product out and once opened it needs using immediately as it sets in the pot.
