I was after some screwdrivers for the garage so I always have a place to go to, that I know I have what I need when I need them. I have some screwdrivers but some are in the kitchen drawer and some are in my toolkit and others are in the car. This set is great for keeping them organized and all in one place, a great addition to my tool collection on my garage wall, for under 20 I don’t think you can go wrong these are a good value, quality set.
I keep losing screwdrivers because I forget to count them out, count them in. Not any more. I can see exactly what’s missing. Really useful set, and good, hardened steel tips, so no more wrecking the ends on tight screws.
Mounting toolsets in racks on the wall of your workshop is perhaps the best way of ensuring that frequently used tools are easily to hand without delay. Thsi set comes with most commeonly used screwdriver types philips and slot drivers in various sizes and also some hex heads and a collection of bits that fit onto the exchangable head driver in this set, or any of those others you probably already have. It all comes in a plastic rack which you can easily fix onto a wall using the supplied screws and plugs.
A very neat package – though I am not keen on the use of the stiff plastic blister pack with it’s horrible sharp edges when cut – but Chinese manufacturers do not yet seem to know how much those things are hated in Europe.
Not used the drivers themselves much yet, but they seem okay. Will update if any problems develop – so far all good!
These look very impressive from the moment you open the box. You get a lot of drivers and bits.
Getting at them is my main gripe. They are packaged in sealed plastic and you need to cut your way in – I hate this type of packaging!
They come with their own mounting block. This has four holes to secure it to the wall, or in my case peg board. Though only two screws are supplied….
The top two holes line up with the holes in my peg board (more by luck than design I guess as the bottom two do not. But a couple of wood screws provided enough purchase to mount it. The supplied rawl plugs enabled me to screw the top two in place.
The drivers are very ergonomic and fit nicely and comfortably in my hand – I have large hands.
The magnetic feature is as strong as claimed holding large screws nicely.
The standard slot head drivers all seem pretty strong and not prone to wear but I have concerns some of the smaller cross head drivers may be a bit weak as they look to wear easily even on light work.
The small slot in driver bits take some prising from their holder, but there is a hole underneath where you can get a small driver in to force them out.
They are all standard size and fit many other drills and drivers.
The main holder I found to be a bit on the small size. The drivers are all packed very tightly together and not easy to get out – especially when wall mounted. It could do with being larger and better spaced.
A few minor niggles but overall a good set of drivers for the money.
Oh, the cross headed screw, particularly when in brass or some gold-coloured metal, presents real danger for someone like Duncurin. The problem is especially acute when using long screws, thick screws or any sort of hard wood — just about all scenarios really.
I don’t really have the strength to turn them in or out properly and yet I somehow do manage to find the strength to mash up the end so that it then becomes impossible for anyone to turn them. Then, my favourite party piece is to somehow cause the screw to sheer off with half still in its hole. Of course, using an electric drill or an electric screwdriver with a suitable bit seems to make the problems even worse.
This recently really hit home as I was putting a clear coat on an oak window in the bathroom. In order to shrug off my ‘half-a-job’ title that my wife has placed upon me I thought I’d remove all the brass fittings, clean them, sand and coat the wood and then put it all back together.
Half the screws I couldn’t get out, two sheared off and I managed to get two or three out cleanly.
Of course, it’s also vital to have the correct screwdriver and enter this nice set of such. Just about any size of driver is available to you and also some nice hexagonal bits for the hex driver. All are nicely made with a nice weight to them. Their tips are of a nice black material which is clean and doesn’t rust and doesn’t mark. Handles are of a nice grippy material and most crucially for a weakling like me their wide diameter means I do have a fighting chance of removing some of the screws as above.
I found the arm thingy that secures the window when open was particularly troublesome. Mercifully the large cross slot screwdriver fitted this nicely and I was able slowly, slowly to remove one screw. Sadly, the other refuses to budge and as the head of the screw is now looking worse for wear, I may have to drill it out.
Of course, I never put such screws back and prefer to use decent Pozi or Philips screws as these, for someone of my strength, give me a fighting chance of getting them out again. The set of screwdrivers of course has suitable screwdrivers for these. I also drill nice pilot holes in hardwood especially to at least help a bit.
The set can be nicely wall mounted and the hole separation is 17.5 cms so simply drill two holes apart at this centre and then use the plugs that come with the set. Make sure it’s level! There you have it, a nice rack of screwdrivers and hex drivers. Please note the hex drivers are in little trays at the front. These hinge forward but they are still tricky to remove and you may need to use one of the smaller screwdrivers to push it up and out from below.
The screwdrivers are magnetised when delivered but of course you can use a de-magnetiser if you so wish to change this. The other point is that all the handles have holes passing right through and I guess you could use these for hanging up an individual screwdriver or even use a mini-tommy bar through them to increase the turning force, though I’ve never been adept at this.
It may well be that I’ll never feel easy with cross slotted screws and will certainly never buy any unless they are miniature ones for my models etc but I do know that if I come across any then this nice set of screwdrivers and hex drivers will at least give me a fighting chance.
Please see some pics of work in progress and the entire rack wall mounted. Many thanks
