I’ve finished Shenmue 1 and can’t wait to get to the next. I was impresed with how much ahead of its time it was. If you can play this recognising that it is a 1999 game (i.e. don’t expect 2023 graphics, controls etc) I think you will be impressed too. I was keen on playing it with english audio as from what I’d seen this was funny, but chose japanese audio instead and I’d recommend you go for that, the atmosphere is fantastic. Great music too. I used a playthrough guide otherwise I can see it being a bit too oldschool (=frustrating) due to very specific conditions that have to be met to progress which are not always made clear (=the game doesn’t babysit), you may want to have one by your side also if, like myself, you don’t have too much time to dedicate to this.
The best games of all time ! Shenmue I & II is a must have for any gamer and nothing can come close to Shenmue ! I would recommend Shenmue to anyone what a game !
I didn’t have a Dreamcast so I missed out on this game. With the third installment coming out, I decided to purchase Shenmue 1 and 2 in order to make sure I was ready for its sequel. I have to say, this game did not disappointment. A truly enthralling story with engaging characters. Action packed with many philosophies to learn from.
I’m glad I played it recently and not back in 1999 and 2001 respectively because I couldn’t imagine the agonising wait the Dreamcast fans had to endure. I can’t wait for the sequel.
Lan Di, we coming for that ass!
I was a huge fan of the original versions on the Dreamcast, so I was hopeful that they would be as good as I remembered almost 20 years on. The great news is that they are! Graphics still look good considering the age, controls are fine, gameplay is exactly as I remember! Voice acting is, interesting at some points, but things have come a long way in 20 years, so I’ll forgive that, just makes me laugh at some of the lines! The fact that almost all of the other characters are unique, and not just clones says a lot about what they managed to make at that time! It’s an excellent story, and whilst I obviously knew the key parts, there were little bits I’d forgotten that add so much to the overall narrative. Fans of the original will not be left disappointed, and it was a great story refresher for going into Shenmue 3, as I’d forgotten a lot of the ending of Shenmue 2.
Shenmue 1 and 2 are classics from the dreamcast era brought back to life after years of fans campaigning for a 3rd in the series Sega and d3t re-released these classics on modern platforms for an all new audience to fall in love with if you buy these games go into them with an open mind set and don’t judge them on modern standards remember these games are from 99 and 2000 for there time they was the most expensive projects and looked amazing great strory great gameplay plus lots of npc and items to interact with.
Fun game with a bit of Dreamcast nostalgia but bare in mind that the controls will feel extremely clunky and awkward to use now we are used to such smooth controls on modern consoles/games. Other than that it is a great game.
Don’t let the old school graphics put you off Shenmue 1 and 2 is a classic for a reason and honestly its great that a new generation of gamers can now experience it! The characters are enduring and the story in both games are rich and fun to explore.
A Sega Dreamcast classic that is now more readily available for a new audiance, yes it may not have the same impact as it original release.
Underneath it’s dated looks is a masterpiece of a game experience well worth looking into, even more so if you played the original Dreamcast versions but you already knew that anyway.
Many people missed out on Shemue originally! With the 3 game due out next year or so it’s a good way to get caught up on a game that was so ahead of its time. Story is epic!
Two fantastic, classic and memorable games on one disc. Two of SEGA’s best of all time. Considering the age of these games, they hold up well. Decent job of porting them too, with hi-res rendering and a much better UI. Can’t fault it, loved every second of playing through them again. Bring on the third next year.
This is a great game. It doesn’t hold up against modern games but the storyline is great and has awesome nostalgia & sentimental value. If you’ve played this game over 18 years ago, then youll love it.
Just had to get this, massive fan of the originals on the dreamcast, i even bought them on the original xbox. However to see them on modern consoles is a nice touch and trophy support…
well that’s me sold incredible games, but maybe not for kids (got to remember that they are old games with polish) as they are not fast paced enough. shenmue 1 & 2 are slow burners, but stick with them and you will be surprised.
4.6/5.0
Never played it before but so glad I got it- very playable still today despite most games of this era having aged quite badly. I can see why this is held highly as a timeless classic. Worthy of its cult status.
If your reading this review and you have played Shenmue before, I dont need to convince you to buy this. If you have no idea what this game is then look up youtube, this classic inspired games such as yakuza and to have HD ports (not remakes) of both games outside the Dreamcast is amazing, especially with Shenmue 3 releasing next yea
I originally acquired these games by buying a Dreamcast with a huge bundle of games and peripherals from a cash strapped friend back in 2002, when I finally got around to playing these strange looking games I was completely blown away and immersed for a couple of weeks.
So on hearing I was going to get the chance to revisit the magical locations featured in the two games along with trophy support on the ps4 I put my pre order in straight away.
I put around four hours in last night, Initially I found the control system quite clumsy compared to modern games but have now got used to it.
The visuals have held up well whilst the sound quality is not great it does its job.
Overall I would score this re release 8/10
I cannot wait to get home later and find some sailors in Dobuita shopping street… Maybe I should get another.
