An item ordered for an elderly gentleman, and he has assured me it has made life easier for him in his garden,he’s able to reach his shrubs to trim with ease.
Decided to buy this as I cannot reach the back of a raised wall bed, this has helped enormously in deadheading roses and other plants that were almost an impossibility before, need something now to help with weeding at back! Highly recommended
This is just perfect for dead heading the plants at the back of my deep flower border. I no longer have to put a foot into the border, whilst trying not to squash a plant, and stretching accross with my secateurs in one hand and the other hand, retrieving the faded bloom. This tool does it all. Nearby neighbour so impressed, I ordered one for her.
Very useful and versatile tool. The multi-angle cutting blade is particularly effective.
Just learn which way up to have it so as to keep hold of the cuttings and light pruning couldn’t be easier.
After 3 years regular use the spring broke so the handle wouldn’t spring back. Spear & Jackson customer services sent a replacement spring within a couple of days. The repair is easily effected with a 10 mm spanner. Tool back in service. Couldn’t fault their customer service.
I love wandering around my garden with this device. It is super sharp, easy to use and can be operated with one hand. This is my second one, the first lasted 6 years, it still works but the handle doesn`t spring back each time, it is still super sharp. I highly recommend it.
Being able to prune plants with less stretching AND hold the cut material in a grip until your dispose of it is a really neat trick. Also being able to rotate to blades to the correct angle to grip the waste really makes for a special tool that every gardener can use.
An excellent tool .I have arthritis of back and neck and find this great for pruning, deadheading and holding climbing rose and clematis dead flower stems plus pyracantha and cotoneaster overgrowths thus saving me straining to reach up & then having to bend to collect cuttings. It is very sharp but when is pole rotated to hold only position ,it acts as a litter picker to collect garden etc debris without stooping . Well worth the money.
Excellent quality build. Recently did my back in so mobility restricted…and was watching my roses not flourish cos I couldn’t prune the dead flowers..high up or low down, with normal secateurs. This is the perfect solution. And when my back is better I shall prevent back injury by using this tool.
Can feel but heavy after a while ..but that’s the robustness of it. So have a cuppa break.
Like that it keeps hold of what you’ve just pruned to put in bucket for compost.
It’s not designed for thicker hard pruning.. so don’t force it. But it’s perfect for soft pruning.
Anyone with a bad back will find this tool invaluable as ling as you make a quick snip it will keep whatever you have cut in tool. You will soon get the hang of it. I do think Spear & Jackson could go further with this type of tool and expand the range, we shall see?
I have high raised beds and it’s sometimes difficult to get up there to dead head the peonies/roses. This is absolutely perfect for the job as it also holds the cut bit so you done have to pick it up afterwards. It’s also lightweight and the perfect length for what I needed. Love how it rotates and angles too. It’s also perfect to prune roses so you don’t need to get too close to the thorns!
Needed to trim a grape vine on an overhead trellis and this saved me climbing on ladders. They cut small sappy stems ok but can’t handle anything too thick. More like a secateurs than loppers
my neighbour planted a Honey suckled ft away from our wire mesh fence? Needless to say we get branches growing through our fence and caursing issues with growing our wisteria along trellis, inside of our wire fence. However the neighbour did say if it comes over yourside just prune it back. SO its ideal to cut it as far back as possible, as where you cut it, it will burst out with many new shoots? And make the situation worse ( self inflicted) otherwise. Just remember it something overhangs you fence you have the right to Prune it back! But idealy you should have a general agreement with your neighbour.
Needless to say I doo it when they have all gone out for the day to avoid antagonism.
This long reach pruner reaches over 1 ft into my neighbours garden to prune the occasional honey suckle branch well back, it also means I can collect the trimming and dispose of the evidence in my dust bin, otherwise if I left the prunings on the floor for my neighbour to pick up? it might Antagonise things abit.
As for the Red Angle Adjuster? Forgett it, I dont use it, I just tightend my one up straight.
There are some other makes who do not fit a Bendy shift at all. yours MARK
THESE LONG REACH PRUNERS WITH CUT AND HOLD FEATURE FROM SPEAR AND JACKSON ARE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO ANYONES TOOL SHED. “THEN WHY ONLY FOUR STARS”??? THAT IS THEY WOULD BE BUT FOR A FEW NAGGING POINTS. THE 19 1/inch ( 49cm ) ALUMINIUM SHAFT ( excluding blade & handle ) KEEP THIS LIGHT-WEIGHT. THE VERY FACT THAT THE BLADE & BLADE MECHANISM ARE STEEL MEANS THAT IT VERY SOON STARTS TO FEEL TOP HEAVY. IF YOUR ONLY GIVING YOUR CLEMATIS/HONEYSUCKLE A QUICK ONCE OVER, YOU WILL BARELY NOTICE IT BUT AS WE ALL KNOW, THE FURTHER YOU GET FROM THE END OF WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A POLE THE GREATER THE DOWNWARD FORCE ON THE END, WHICH CAN MAKE IT A LITTLE AWKWARD IF – LIKE ME – YOU SUFFER OSTEOARTHRITIS IN SHOULDER,ELBOW, WRIST OR HAND. IN WHICH CASE SHORT CUTTING BURSTS IS THE ANSWER. THE CUTTING BLADE ITSELF IS 2 1/4 inches ( 5.8cm ). THIS MAY NOT SOUND A LOT, BUT AGAIN, IF YOU ARE KEEPING YOUR CLEMATIS/HONEYSUCKLE TIDY THIS IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE. THE CUT AND GRIP FUNCTION IS A NICE TOUCH PROVIDED YOU REMEMBER BLADE FIRST AT THE POINT YOU ARE PRUNING, THEN PLASTIC GRIP. THE OTHER WAY ROUND AND YOUR PEARS/APPLES/CUTTINGS WILL HIT THE DECK. THE LAST 4inches ( 10cm ) OF THE MAIN SHAFT CAN BE TILTED EITHER WAY BY AROUND 40degrees AND ROTATED BY 180degrees, ALLOWING YOU ACCESS TO THOSE AWKWARD PLACES. THE HANDLE IS ONE OF THOSE NAGGING – YOU AINT GETTING THAT 5TH STAR – PLACES. NO NICE SOFT GRIP ERGONOMICS HERE. THE THIN STRIPS OF RUBBER THAT LINE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY TWO VERY SLIGHTLY CURVED (and I mean very slightly) 4inch (10cm) HANDLES, ARE NEARLY AS HARD AS THE HANDLES THEMSELVES. THE HANDLE DOES INCORPORATE A SWIVEL LOCK TO KEEP THE BYPASS BLADE IN THE CLOSED POSITION AND A SCREW UNDERNEATH TO SLOW THE SHAFT FROM KEEP TWISTING AROUND UNNECESSARILY. THERE YOU HAVE IT. I DO SUFFER OSTEOARTHRITIS FROM SHOULDER TO FINGERS ( NOW NOW ) BUT DESPITE THOSE LITTLE NIGGLES I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE WITHOUT MY SET. I JUST DEPLOY THE DO A SECTION, HAVE A CUPPA, DO A SECTION, HAVE A CUPPA TECHNIQUE AS SO ELOQUENTLY DEMONSTRATED IN THE WOMENS WORLD CUP BY ERM, NO ITS GONE LOL
