This is basically the fighting game I’ve been waiting for for 30 years. I’ve always wanted an actual fighting game where you can create your character and build them by learning skills from iconic characters and the World Tour mode here is IT and more. It’s not the best looking open world you’ll find but it’s a very fun one to play explore and play around in.
The arcade mode is also present so all the official characters have their little opening and ending vignettes as per usual. I don’t play online but there are a wealth of options for that too.
As you might expect, the fighting is as great as it’s always been, with a few new systems and gimmicks to master. I think I might prefer the way SFV felt to play, but there’s not a lot in it and SF6 gives you an experience that is suitably different enough that owning both games are worth it. All in all I love this game.
Nothing is perfect, however, and there a few things to mention. Firstly, I haven’t finished the World Tour mode yet but with the story there seems to a distinct lack of stakes. It feels like every character is in transitional state between big stories. But this may be addressed with future DLC or a sequel. It’s a minor thing as story is not that important in a fighting game.
Another issue is, as far as I’m aware, can’t use your created fighter in arcade mode. I’m not expecting ending vignettes, but it would be nice to be able to take them through a classic arcade run.
As a punk rocker/metalhead I’m also not too taken with the hip hop aesthetic. It’s not a real flaw with the game, just a personal taste thing. It also feels a bit “Hey there fellow kids!” at times. But again that’s just me. It might be exactly what YOU are looking for.
None of these are serious issues but there is one that may kill this version for some. The PS4 version obviously has some graphical downgrades, like no reflective surfaces, and an occasional choppy framerate, which is no surprise really. If you’re an old git like me, who doesn’t care about everything being 60FPS or whatever, it’s a perfectly playable version, and I’m happy they released it on PS4 given that I’m not bothering with the current gen. Obviously if you’re serious about fighting games, you don’t need me to tell you that this isn’t the version to get. But even if you’re not, it’s something to be aware of before slapping down the cash.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m having loads of fun with this game. And I barely notice the framerate issues, with my old man vision and I’m running it on a vanilla PS4. Not a “Pro” in sight. And if this version is the only option for you, then I’d recommend giving it a go (there’s a demo you can try on PSN). It may be the worst version of SF6, but it’s still a very much SF6, and thus it’s still awesome.
