Great product for varnishing gaming miniatures.
Four stars for durability because we’ve only just started using it but previous cans of this have lasted well on the models.
Maybe you can get cheaper varnish elsewhere but this is made specifically for gaming products and is very good quality.
Works like a charm, with proper technique you get an even coat which covers well and takes paint perfectly. Could it be cheaper? Yes. But is it better than cheaper alternatives? Yes.
Decided to give this a try to replace Vallejo Matt which i can’t seem to find anywhere right now… unfortunately, while application was flawless and dries really quick, it dries satin. I’m not entirely unset about this, however i really need a super matt varnish. Will keep this in my arsenal until i can find something better.
This is really effective paint. I have been using this to paint a 1/12th scale time machine (don’t ask). It covers really well, and I didn’t need any other paint. This did the whole job. Recommended.
But then, to get the lid off the can, you have to twist a flat screwdriver between the lid and the can. It takes a lot of force. The screwdriver slipped and punctured the can, spraying me and my workshop in gunmetal paint. Wasted most of a can. Please change the design.
Use it to finish off my miniatures as thats what everyone says to do to enhance the durability of the paint. Not sure if it works however I can say non of my miniatures have lost any paint or have been scratched soo maybe it does work. Once you spray they do become sticky for a few minutes so you need to let it dry.
It also does not change the colour of the miniatures in anyway which was my one worry but over a 4 jut because I feel like its a little over priced for what it does.
I had prepared expensive stock for a Craft Fayre and used another product that claimed to be Matt finish, result….. disaster, horrendous high gloss finish on my very expensive Art items. I complained to the company and got no response…….typical, so, on advice, trawled through Amazon and discovered this product which was a lifesaver. It worked! thank god, which saved me a lot of lost revenue. From now on I will never go for the cheaper version and am in the process of reordering this even though it is slightly more expensive. Thank you The Army Painter.
No issue in the end. No bulging can, no blocked nozzle, no porous texture, no gloss. Looks exactly as I expected, I painted a few metal parts from a bass – screws, rings from the machinehead (marked, I did not touch the machineheads themselves, those were black), that string adjusting thingy in the middle. It looks a lot less grey in real life, sorry for the picture quality.
I am not a fan of the durability on metal, I can very easily scrape it off with my nails after days of drying, even though I have cleaned all the little parts exactly as suggested by the people of the internet. But the stuff I painted black aren’t being scratched so hope it will last. It definitely looks good until it comes off.
Edit: Replacement can arrived so quickly and it works perfectly. Thank you Army Painter (and thank you Amazon – for the incredibly quick delivery).
Actual Product Review:
The finish from this paint is beautifully smooth and clean and I have found it to be durable. Application is easy and you get excellent coverage.
I have used Army Painter spray paint on a whole swarm of models now and none of them have had any problems with chipping or peeling from handling, tabletop use or transport.
Aside from the defective can, which appears to have been just ‘one of those things’ as opposed to any indication of brand quality, I been very pleased with Army Painter spray paint and recommend it.
Note:
Do watch or read the tutorials as it is slightly different to your typical spray paint – particularly if you regularly use other brands of spray paint (you have to be closer to the model than you would usually be) and do perform the cleaning at the end of spraying to maintain longevity of your can.
Original review:
The can I received just a few hours ago was defective. No pressure. Paint just dribbling out. Totally unusable.
The first tin of Army Painter Spray I bought was great. Still going strong and I was really happy with it. This is the second I have bought, and it doesn’t work at all.
I will be happy to improve this review if the returns policy works effectively and the next can works as intended. ‘Army Painter’ was recommended to me as a reliable brand so I am hoping this was just a bad tin and I got unlucky.
Third times the charm!
