A recent home move resulted in needing to do various bits of DIY and drill into brick walls. I bought this to detect hidden pipes and electrical wires and it’s proved its worth over and over.
A previous detector had a sensitivity switch. This one doesn’t but I’d say it probably isn’t needed. It seems to very accurately detect pipes and wiring and once you get your head around how it works, (read the instructions properly, which I admit I didn’t do immediately) you are able to locate the start and end of anything you don’t want to drill into via the markings on the unit.
It comes packed in a little tin, which protects it after use. It’s a solid but light weight little piece of kit, which I would expect from Bosch. It’s easy to hold and operate, with just a slider switch on the front to turn on and off. I’m still on the original battery after a couple of months use. A simple but effective tool and I’m very pleased with this detector.
Hand on wall. Hand on wall. Took me ages to work out where every bit of wall triggered this device. Basically, unless you hold it properly and have a hand on the wall, it won’t read properly.
Practice with it first one on places where you KNOW you have cables and/or metal.
Using mine it started to wine to show there was a live cable and it took me a moment to realise it had picked up the light switch on the other side of the wall (as it should).
Personal tip – hold it a fraction away from the wall – worked better like that for me (just not to far away!).
Easy to use and gives you peace of mind for when you need to drill into the wall. Brought this when I read a review about another cheaper make which was not very good. Buyer of that then bought this one and rated it highly so I went for this option. Glad I did.
Brought this just before the worldwide lock down from COVID19 – so not really game to start drilling through walls why the health services are otherwise busy.
That said, having lived in this house for a long time, I have a good idea of where the pipes and wires are in the wall – so ran it over those areas and it was spot on. I’d trust it enough to drill my holes but still make sure that the ECB was plugged in.
As for the fish tank – seriously don’t turn in on stood next to it – whatever is emitted – scares the fish.
It has only one on/off switch to operate and hence very easy to use. However, sometimes it senses live wire even when the power supply has been turned off (it could be due to near by live wires or residual electrostatic). It is powered by AAA batteries which are convenient to replace.
